That would be nice - not that long ago my local lotto store sold a ticket worth just under half a million dollars.

I would so love to do this, not sure we'll have the funds since we're in the process of redoing the kitchen. Hmmm maybe I can talk my dad in to giving me this trip as my 40th birthday present.

My 70th birthday is early in July...I am already throwing hints for $$$ for the plane ticket and accommodations. I certainly hope we are all going to stay in the same hotel so that when Adobe finally kicks us out we can continue partying all night.

ALSO some of us could pool for rent-a-cars...those hitting the airport around the same times.

I am planning on this...can you tell?

I am sooooo there, Lynnie (FormbyGirl) and I are planning it already. I am so glad the grannies convinced me to call the airline company when I had to cancel my trip to Vegas. They gave me a credit note for another flight so this is just perfect for me.

I'm checking prices: would like to come in really early and leave really late and not stay overnight. Austin to San Jose has loads of non-stop flights since there's so much travel between them in the semiconductor industry, and I think Troy has some miles from going over there for work so often. I think I may have some med issues getting on the plane so close to my due date, but hopefully I can get it all worked out! I'm really excited to go!

Do we have the times set up yet for the day's activities on the 26th? I know I'm asking a little early, but I'm flying back home that day from Vancouver, Canada from vacation and I want to make sure I book an early enough flight back home. Thanks

Meg
02-04-2008, 03:53 PM
I'm coming, too!!!!!!!!!!! I had so much fun in Vegas, there's no WAY I'm going to miss this! I'll be driving down, most likely, so I can help be a taxi, if needed!

Emma
02-04-2008, 03:54 PM
nothing exact yet, because I need to know also so I can fly in around them to get in early enough for any fun meetings, and leave late enough after the crop gets over. Right now I'm ballparking it, but I don't have a lot of flight options for really early or really late (red-eyes).

This is looking much more likely to happen for me. My sweet DH has been racking up Delta miles with trips for work most recently one to Korea. So I may only need to cover hotel for a couple nights. Well that and a baby sitter for Sat because Ken has a wedding to shoot that day, but I think we'll be covered.

My DH will be driving up with me, Lisa, but he already knows the rules. Las Vegas last fall was easy because he could gamble -- not sure what he's going to do in San Jose. We used to live up in the Bay Area, though, so he may call some friends.

P.S. Will we be able to a get a group discount at any particular hotel?

My non-hubby (i.e. my BF) comes and he has a great time. He doesn't usually scrap much, but he's entertained all the same. But he's unique...I don't think every guy would have such a good time. But, it certainly isn't a girls only event!

Oh, I so wish I could afford to go! But being all the way on the other side of the US, and not having anyone to share expenses with makes it tough! I not only use Adobe products for all my photography and scrapbook work, my income all comes from software that runs on Adobe ColdFusion server. With as much income as I generate for them, they should pay for me to come! :)

I have a friend who has a friend who has a friend who knows the area - I will find out what sort of places there are that would work for a photo walk - - It might not be quite as easy for this time as it was in Vegas where everything is so central and easy to find - but I will work on it- -

Lauren, I live about 30 minutes away from Adobe and would be more than happy to work with you to plan a photowalk. I've done a number of weddings and portrait sessions in that area. Also, the city of San Francisco and the beautiful coastline is within 45 min of where Adobe is located. PM me and I'm sure we can plan a great walk. Sue

Lauren
02-10-2008, 01:47 PM
Sue that would be great - Ive just this minute done some googling and it does look like there are quite a lot of great photo ops in the vicinity - from Peralta Adobe to Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph to Guadalupe River Park and Gardens and Mexican Heritage Plaza so this could work out quite well. I will be sure to contact you closer to the time to get your suggestions

Wow, thanks for the nice comments. Yeah, I've done photography for canine sports since the earliest days of autofocus SLRs, and in that niche I'm pretty good. I've really wanted to branch out and do more, but I make so much more money as a programmer, it's always hard to justify the time and expense involved! :)

Susan, these crops are a lot of fun. You'll need your laptop with whatever page-creation software you typically use, any scrapping kits you have, some scanned photos, and that's about it! Oh, and chocolate... although the DSP gals usually are pretty generous in their offerings! You might want to bring a camera. Mostly what goes on is a lot of laughter, sometimes some tutorials or demonstrations, and a little bit of scrapping, LOL... each person gets a power hookup and a table space and we all go to work. (Some get more pages done than others!)

Hope you can make it!

San Francisco is about an hour north - and truly worth a visit. Be sure to visit Golden Gate Park and the museums on the grounds - just amazing. There is the coolest children's playground too with a lovely old carasoul in Golden Gate Park as well. There is Monterrey and their incredible Aquarium and an adorable little town, Capitola - just over the hills.

I would be sure to add a day before the weekend or after so that you can do site seeing.

Northern California is an amazing place - worth the trip!!

Is anyone interested in touring Alcatraz with me that Sunday? I'm staying an extra day to tour there because my great-great uncle was sent there after robbing a bank in KY and tried to escape and ended up causing a mass breakout attempt and killed 2 guards before he was killed... not something to be proud of, but it would be neat to see where my idiot family member did that! lol....

My son & daughter in law live in San Francisco, so I will be bunking at his house for the weekend for the Adobe Event. If anyone would like to meet up on Sunday in San Francisco, I am happy to lead a bit of a tour around the city - perhaps we could have a lunch on the Wharf. There is a train from San Jose to San Francisco so its pretty easy to get to.

It is also nice to go across the bridge to Sausalito. They have some cute shops and the view back to San Fran is amazing.

Anyway, just send a PM as the time grows near and let me know. You can't get that close to the Golden Gate Bridge and not take a peek.

Regards,
Kate

I will also be spending time before or after ( havent booked any tickets yet) the crop in the SFO area . I intend to see all the exciting places that there are to see in the area including alcatraz, sausalito the Golden Gate bridge etc etc - I also intend to get to Napa Valley if I have time and have a long list of further afield places I probably wont get to but have hopes to!!
Perhaps we can organise the photo walk to be a little further afield than San Jose this time - and have it in SanFrancisco - I will look into options in the next month to work out practicalities - The photo walk will more than likely be on the Friday .
If you are interested in attending the photo walk then raise your hand and let me know if you are interested in going further afield than just the local San Jose area

Tara
02-24-2008, 02:10 PM
Going further afield would be my suggestion...I think SF is a much more interesting place for a photo walk! I'm in pretty much wherever you decide!

You will love it Suvgal- crops are just so much fun - There are several members here who are very familiar with the San Jose SanFrancisco area who I hope will help me out organising this photo walk - I really enjoy them - what could be more fun than taking photos of great places with lots of new and not so new friends

So do you setup a LAN or is everyone working stand alone? Also, are we in the room with the computers the entire day that bringing a desktop is a possibility? Just curious as I'm thinking about making the trek up but it would have to be with my desktop as I can't afford the laptop I really want

I would vote for San Fran, too -- wonderful city to walk or grab a cable car -- unlimited number of interesting shots! Even farther afield -- crossing the Golden Gate would get us to Sausalito, redwoods, shots back at the city, etc. Kind of hard to go wrong in that part of California, I think.

Ive done a bit of research and there is a train from san jose to San francisco which runs regularly - there is one that leaves at 9.40 from San jose and gets to San Francisco at 11am and that sounds like it would be a good one for us to take for those who dont have car transport. I will look into a photo walk route in San Francisco along with one in San Jose and we can vote on which would be the most fun

So do you setup a LAN or is everyone working stand alone? Also, are we in the room with the computers the entire day that bringing a desktop is a possibility?

it's all stand alone, but we'll post more about internet access if that's a possibility.

i've taken my desktop to crops before! not super convenient, but if it's an all day thing i didn't mind. didn't bring all the peripherals, just tower, keyboard, and mouse.

Muir Woods in Marin County is very nice, Santa Cruz Boardwalk is also fun. Shawn just suggested a side trip over to Berkeley. Traffic in the bay area is a pain no matter what time of day.

Being born and raised in San Francisco I would love to help out with great places to go on the photowalk. Unfortunately won't be back from vacation until the early am on crop day (7/26) Wouldn't mine at all to lead something up for Sunday. The different neighborhoods in the city offer so much...i.e Chinatown, Northbeach, Mission, Downtown, Fisherman's Wharf, great Victorian buildings, and amazing buildings all around the city. Great people shots too. Golden Gate park has a lot of great photos spots as well as the local beaches around the city. A couple of the beaches offer amazing shots of the Golden Gate Bridge. Night shots of the city can be great too. Let me know what you think.

Oh cool - good to know! LOL - not having to deal with hooking up to a network is just fine by me as I hate that side of computers - that's what the hubby is for! But I don't mind a little inconvenience so I can have my 24" LCD display - the eyes really thank me for it at the end of the day. Plus I use these cool harnesses by geargrip.com to move my CPU and LCD dislplay - makes it way easier.

Wow so much to look forward too.

My Hubby has said it could be a possibility for me to attend this. Is there room for a newbie from little old gorgeous NZ? And what about bringing hubby with me, although its not definate he will come?

Also what would be the main airport I would fly into first from Auckland?

sailingsue

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is where you need to fly into. There is a smaller airport in San Jose where Adobe is located but doubt if you could get a direct flight from Auckland to San Jose. The distance by car from SFO to San Jose with no traffic is between 30-40 min. At the airport you can easily rent a car.

I'm trying to work on this ... I work for Oracle (software company that is headquartered in Redwood Shores), and it would be so excellent if I could combine a work and play trip!

Lauren, if you are at all a wine person, Napa and Sonoma are so worth the trip. It is such a beautiful part of the world, to say nothing of the wine! My husband and I have been visiting wine country once or twice a year since 1999, so if you can squeeze it into your schedule, I would be happy to make some suggestions. We are planning a trip for April right now, and I get so excited just thinking about it!

Experience tells us that a photo walk before the crop is more successful - and we do have to be mindful of transport issues regarding getting from San Jose to San Francisco but I have a photo walk route that was done by another group last year which we can call on in SFO which looks to be quite fun . Alternatively there is a historical park in San Jose which has free entry and there is also the Winchester Mystery House which might make a good venue ( it has gardens as well ) - it however is quite pricey to get entry to

Perhaps since some folks are bringing spouses and/or significant others, we could plan an evening event where folks could get acquainted? Maybe the night before, or the evening of the crop if it doesn't go too late?

Tara
02-27-2008, 01:40 AM
Oooooooh, an evening out before the crop would be so awesome!!! We could all go out to dinner somewhere and invite the hubbies/BFs/travel companions. We could choose a moderately priced place - no breaking the bank but no Taco Bell either. IF people couldn't afford it, they wouldn't have to go...but it would be another fun option of things to do. Heck, let's make a whole week out of it!!! I'll be on summer vacation - - bring it on!!!

(And don't you just love how it is the New Zealander who is always our travel guide?!)

Oh - things have probably changed for you who are not on the West Coast...but right now my little Adobe ticker says we have EXACTLY 5 months to go. Wahooo!!!!

As far as I know, there isn't any details yet. They should be getting them together soon though. I know it's better to book flights/hotel as early as possible. And once we get the extra cash to do it, I'll be booking. I want to make sure I can get the hotel/flight I want.

Lauren
02-27-2008, 09:08 PM
No exact details yet but we've done 2 photo walks in the past - one before the crop and one after and the concensus was that it was much more fun before the crop because then you had great photos to scrap with and share during the crop, but we are always flexible !!
Dinner could be on the Friday after the photo walk or on the Sunday - not everyone will probably be available for either of the days but we will go with whatever suits the majority probably

There's been a lot of chatter on this thread since I last checked!

I am (tentatively) planning on flying in to SJC on Thursday, photo walking Friday, cropping Saturday, Sunday--open to suggestions, but would like to go on into San Fran..and be there the rest of the time, flying out of Oakland on Tuesday.

Just saying! :D :D

Open to inexpensive hotel recommendations for either place! And by the way, if you are looking and see a place in San Jose called the Plaza Hotel, don't try to book it! The Plaza Hotel, located on Almaden Avenue and East San Fernando Street, is where parole officers traditionally send ex-cons to live after prison. It is home to almost 20 registered --- offenders -- the highest concentration in the city. :yikes: :yikes:

But no worries, it was/is scheduled for demolition--that's an up and comming neighborhood from what I read. It just threw me for a loop when I was looking around!

Is anyone interested in touring Alcatraz with me that Sunday? I'm staying an extra day to tour there because my great-great uncle was sent there after robbing a bank in KY and tried to escape and ended up causing a mass breakout attempt and killed 2 guards before he was killed... not something to be proud of, but it would be neat to see where my idiot family member did that! lol....

Definitely a possibility for me! I'm also planning to see the redwoods--never have, and can't see not taking advantage whilst so close!

Im not sure on hotels yet myself - I will either fly in Wed or Thurs and stay for a few days afterward or fly in Monday and go home on Sunday or Monday - not sure yet- it depends on the cost of the flights at the time i book - the date i choose can vary up to $600 depending on dates

i'll definitely be there - I help run an Ethiopian Heritage Camp that weekend and it is nearby (near Santa Cruz) - I thought long and hard and I do the camp every year and honestly I think they will get along without me on Saturday. There is a LOT of weekday business travel (including me for my "real" job) so hotels will be pricey - Mountain View and some other suburbs may be less expensive - and it isn't like Vegas where you want to stay on the strip or something. Expect traffic to be a nightmare at weekday rush hours and do not plan on going anywhere then.

Just checking in...anxiously awaiting further details.

I have inherited my daughters old dell laptop:) It doesn't have any graphic programs on it yet. She says there is not enough room for Photoshop. I'm thinking I could load Paintshop Pro or FotoFusion and scrap with that at the crop.

I don't know anything about laptops. I have my digi stash on an external hard drive. Can that external drive also be connected to a lap top and I can scrap with my stuff. Or do I need to transfer a few kits to the lap top? I guess I also need to think about getting my photos onto the laptop too!

I tried the laptop out a bit and I am having trouble just navigating without using my mouse. I can not imagine trying to scrap with it. Any tips for a laptop newbie??

This is getting more perfect...I only live an hour from the City so I can hop on BART(rapid transit) and avoid driving into the city.

Lauren, think I've gotten myself confused. :annoyed:  Is the photo walk in San Fran or in San Jose? Could you post a brief overview of the weekend again? Just for the newbies, of course. ;)

To all of the new people, you definitely should plan on attending this crop. When we get together it's like a huge family reunion -- we may not know everybody but we all feel connected.

So, are there any more details...trying to decide if a hotel room in either san francisco or san jose is going to be worth it. Are people staying in s.f. on friday then going to san jose saturday morning? Shawn may be ready to come saturday but may want to be at a hotel nearby, any in walking(short) distance of adobe?

we should be under contract and able to post the hotel info soon! it is walking distance!

I was away for about nine days and thought for sure more information would be available on by now! What is registration free, where are reasonable hotels to stay at? Is there transportation available to hotel from San Jose airports to hotels? I am surprised no more information is available on this. I would love to attend but I am wait answers before I commit myself. Thanks. Carti

05-31-2008, 04:26 PM
unfortunately we can't share the details til we get them all, but we're working hard on it! we have to wait on other companies, and they're never as fast as we're used to at dsp! but soon!

Lauren
05-31-2008, 06:29 PM
The photo walk is in San Jose - on the Friday - in the afternoon - probably sometime around 4pm - The crop is Saturday- I cant confirm the hours but previous crops generally have been all day and into the evening - - Margie will be posting more details about hotels and costs very soon but I am arriving in San Jose on Friday - mid day ish I hope - Im driving down from the Yosemite area that morning and I have no idea how long that takes but we will leave early enough to be there hopefully around lunch time .

Will there be a photo walk in san francisco? Just to confirm photo walk is in san jose.
Drive through San Jose several times a month on way to and from santa cruz, didn't know there was enough stuff for a photo walk! Now all I need is what hotel to stay at

Yes confirming the photo walk is in San Jose - I will be in San francisco from July 18 - 21 if anyone wants to meet up and tag along with whatever Im doing they are welcome to pm me - but the main photo walk will be in San Jose - you dont need lots of fancy places to have a photo walk - there are photographic opportunities everywhere - yesterday I went for a photo walk in a cemetery!! not a lot of life there - sorry bad joke!!!
Hotel suggestions will be coming soon - as soon as Margie gets the details in order so dont panic

Just made my reservation at the downtown crowne plaza hotel! It's one block away from adobe! If you are driving to the hotel there is a parking fee of $18.00 per night!
Not sure where everyone is staying but this hotel is about as close to stuff as you can get!

crlin60

Good grief! The parking fee is outrageous!! That plus the price of gas = beginning to look bad!

bendipez
06-01-2008, 11:59 PM
FYI, I went with the stay connected package of $145.00 a night. Includes complimentary parking and free internet(normally $9.95 per 24 hours). The "cheapest" rate available is $125.00 per night!!!

Margie
06-02-2008, 12:01 AM
it'll be cheaper if you hang tight a few more days! :D

Does this mean we might get a group rate for the hotel? Usually, when a number of people sign up one gets a group rate! I hope so cause otherwise I don't think I can afford it.
I just wonder why it is taking so long to get a contract. The longer the wait is the cost of air fares has already gone up!
Thanks. Carti

Oh and yeah - Im looking forward to paying my contribution to the gas for my rental car - it will be WAY cheaper than what Im paying here in NZ - ( $US 7.59 a gallon) - ok never looking forward to shelling out money but hey its WAY cheaper in the US than here !!!

bendipez

Canay, you could drive down early saturday(around 8am) and be at he crop by 10am
then drive home after the crop. Remember, Lauren's photo walk is friday. All in all I would really think about spending the night in san jose. Not sure if friday or saturday night would be the best(we're doin both) maybe Lauren or Margie would have a better idea for you

Man I feel for you. But...maybe living on a itty bitty island ya don't have to drive so far huh...so you don't use as much gas...so they gotta charge you more??? Law of supply and demand!!

I'm fretting gas going over $5. I can't imaging paying $7.59.
