Original challenge for February (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29278).
A few people have said that they would like to keep going with their self portraits - and there may be some more who might like to join in the fun. So we will keep it going for March. Remember, the challenge is to take a self portrait a day (self portrait = a photo you take of yourself by holding out the camera in front of you, using a self timer or remote, reflections or any other technique that works for you). Post your photos in the Self Portrait a Day gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=5551) :)
This is a great challenge to help get more of YOU in your albums - and to experiment with your camera :) Hope some of you can join us
I'm going to try to keep going, for sure!!! Not only am I taking more pictures of myself, I'm taking more pictures in general! I find myself paying much closer attention to photo ops these days, love that!
AND I'm loving seeing everyone else's, this has turned out to be such a fun way to get to know each other!

Well, I don't know if I can keep up with it everyday (I'm taking a DSU class in March), but I may pop in now and then with a self-portrait.

Not committing myself at this stage - struggling with ideas as it is. Which reminds me I haven't done today and haven't uploaded the last couple.

Well I've been whining about not liking my camera and I NEVER ever take pics of me nor do I allow anyone else, so I'll try. I'm taking the home studio class next month, so I'll have to start taking more pics and at least I cooperate.

We are definitely keeping this going. It doesn't have to be every day if you can't fit that in. Just as long as you are having fun and getting in front of the camera every now and again :) Here is my first one for March (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=245757).

I have decided I can't commit to do another whole month, its been SO much fun, I've loved it, thank you so much Sharon and Meg! BUT I have a busy few weeks coming up with extra work etc so I can't be sure I could do everyday. I will pop in with the odd one if thats ok though?! I am so much more comfortable infront of the camera than I ever was before this, and thats a big thing.
My great grandchildren thank you in advance!! :)

I was going through the fabulous self portrait gallery and just started kind of summarizing the categories of self portraits. Here's what I came up with.
• Artistic filters or effects
• Baby photo and current photo together (hold a framed photo of baby, split faces, extract baby or yourself
• Body parts
• Cloning - many of you in the same. Tutorial: http://www.mrmalique.com/index.php/tutorial-how-to-create-your-own-clones/
• Different locations – at work, shopping, vacation, in a vehicle
• Doing some daily activities
• Environmental - yard, kitchen, etc.
• Formal portrait
• Holding your camera looking into a mirror
• In a scene like framed on the wall, in a computer screen, in an art gallery. For example, http://www.dumpr.net
• Laying in bed or on the floor
• Lighting effects, candles, bounced flash, firelight
• Looking through or into something (for example, rolled tube or camera inside the refrigerator)
• Modified to be humorous
• Of course, at your computer
• Photo with or doing hobbies
• Posed Action
• Reflection in mirror, window, appliances, etc.
• Selective coloring, black and white or sepia
• Shadows & shadow doing something different than you are
• Silhouette in door or window
• Softening brightening filters. Virtual Photographer is a favorite. http://www.optikvervelabs.com/
• Spin chair
• Sunrise or Sunset with you in it
• You in photo with family, friends, pets

Maureen...thanks for all those great ideas. It will be nice to look back and when I am unsure of what to do.
Here is my Day 1...I ended up putting it in PSE6 and saving for the web. not sure if that was what i was supposed to do. Or if there is a faster way. Actually it was good...I got to play around a bit and get a little creative with it.

I would be interested in tips on how others save photos too. I'm so used to using a formula for my 12X12 layouts that when I have odd numbers of pixels it throws me for a loop!
And here is mine for today (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=246100)...

03-02-2008, 05:04 PM
When saving for posting at DSP, I simply reduce the longest side to 600pixels in the Save to Web function in PSE. Usually that brings my photo to 600x400px or so which seems to work well.

Hey, all.
I have two questions ... I started doing the SPAD in March ... am I supposed to post here also?
Second question .... a few posts back scamptx makes reference to odd pixels, and sort of implies that it is bad. If I am posting a LO or a photo, if needed, I flatten the image, resize it to 72 DPI and then something like 550x550 for a LO, or if it is a photo maybe different dimensions. So, what's the deal with the odd pixels?

I think scamp was referring to non-square LO or pic. That is totally not a problem - your uploads can have any dimensions as long as they are less than 120 (?) Kb. BUT to make them entirely visible on viewers screen they should - at 72dpi - be no greater than 1000 pixels wide and 600 pixels high- that is:- whatever fits within those dimensions. So a double page spread of two 12 x 12 inch could be resized to 1000 x 500 pixels and be comfortably seen by people with monitors set at 1024 by whatever.
Some people will still have 14 or 15 inch monitors set at 800 x 600 so they would have to scroll to view all the picture... Donut's display of all her Feb photos is 600 x 600 pixels - to give you an example. [Thanks Donut]

Now I started scapping I realised how little pictures I have with myself on it.. And I am uncomfortable being photographed....so this is a nice way to try to change this..
Have to really read into the how to's and to figure out the timer of my camera...

Boy!!! Was that uncomfortable those sitting down the first couple of times before my own camera..(knowing I HAD to post something....)!!!!
I mostly don't like myself in pictures!! But now....I got the chance to go ahead until I had it right. And I noticed I got more and more comfortable with doing this (and looking at myself on pictures).....my MAJOR lesson for the day....
So...here it is..I';m quite satisfied with it ..although it's a bit dark..

Tusele there is absolutely no penalty for not posting each day. This is just for fun so that you can get comfortable in front on your camera. It is just another way to be creative. We learn lot about each other and that is total fun!

LOL - that is right - we drag you off and beat you if you miss a day!! Only joking :)
This is a purely "for fun" challenge with a dual purpose - to learn more about your camera (if only where the self timer is!!) and to get more photos of YOU!!

Can't remember if I shared this before (if I have you are hearing it again!!). Last month when I was browsing the mags as Borders (as you do), I found an article on a guy (Dave McNally (http://www.davemcnally.org/web/Welcome.html))who had just completed his 365 days of self portraits (some cool shots too!!). He said that his father had been a photographer and that after he died they had hundreds of photos of Yosemite, but very few of him. He said that they really would have rather had photos of his dad. That kind of sums it up really - don't be missing from your albums!!

You will just have to try each time. :) I always take couple practice pictures. Obviously it is easier if you have a tripod. Sometimes it can really take some time to get the picture right.

Not sure where to put my collection of February self portraits (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=249153). It is a salute to the few of you who have continued and a show of support for those of you who have taken up the challenge for this month but most of all it is an accolade to Sharon Shazzt! May she have the tenacity to complete 365!

Just wanted to post a "THANKS" to all of you. I'm pretty uncomfortable with being in front of the camera, but your encouraging comments have made it easier. Thanks for all your kind words to both my daughter and myself. Before this month I would have preferred scrubbing the toliet over a self portrait, but now being in the photo is a bit easier!! Thanks.

So, in about 45 minutes it will be April. I was so good about this, and a family situation got me totally thrown off track. Once I fell off the wagon, I couldn't get back on. (Hmmmm guess that explains my diet situation!)
Anyways, are we going to continue into April? I have a suggestion to make ... what if we do a photo a day of someone else? A spouse? A child? A parent? A pet? Some of us have a lot of pictures of ourselves by now, and adding to the collection with someone else might work. thoughts anyone?

Well I made it another month for SPAD. I plan on doing SPAD in April. Yes I have lots of me but I am going to keep going. I did not link each photo. There is a PAD (photo a day) challenge that you could do if you dont want to do SPAD to practice taking photos.

I also made it through the month! I didn't post here, but you can look in My Gallery (http://kathleen08.digitalscrapbookplace.com). When I started March 1st, I really wasn't sure about the idea, but I am so glad I did! Looking at some of the other SPAD'ers, I really am inspired. I don't think I will be doing this every day, but maybe I won't be so camera shy!
In addition to having a little more opportunity to play with my camera and learn a few things about settings and light, here is what I learned:
I have way more freckles than I thought on my face, I have really pretty hair, but it needed to be cut (which I did last week), I really need to see an orthodontist or get new bonding done on a couple of my front teeth (two front teeth were chipped when I was young, and the caps have been in place for over 25 years), I really do have a long face, and I wish my eyes were a little bigger! Despite the teeth, I do have a pretty smile. Oh yea, and I big reminder I need to get healthy and lose some weight!
Thanks for sharing all your SPADs, and thank you to everyone who commented on mine!

I need to catch up on all your shots. Things have been so busy lately with the birthday bash! Feel free to continue on in April - I will be because I still have about 150 or so shots to go to finish my 365. Some of you may want to join me (Self Portrait Addicts Anonymous???) - after all you have already done two months worth :)

Sharon, you have mentioned your photo club. Is it something local? On the web? So many of your shots have had a kernel of inspiration to start, and I am curious what else is in store, or what other ideas might spur me on???

I have posted this in club digital gallery, it uses Tina's QC to be able to put the whole month's photos together.

Yes Sharon what is this photo club. I would love more info too. I am using these photos as sort of a visual diary to document (for as long as I can keep taking daily photos) what goes on in our family using SPAD's.
This has been such a great challenge!

Well is it just a group on Flickr (one of many doing 365 type challenges there). I stumbled across it last year. My full set of self portraits is here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shazzt/sets/72157601873126495/) all 212 of them (soon to be 213) should you wish to have a laugh.

I would have preferred scrubbing the toilet over a self portrait.
Funnily enough, I have done a self portrait of myself doing just that (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shazzt/1351961321/in/set-72157602009529094/)!!

great work everyone!!! thanks for encouraging me so I feel more comfortable in front of the camera and inspiring me to do more self portaits (and sharing some GREAT ideas)
I had to prioritise...and that meant not continuing this challenge..
I was busy with travelling for work, family related activities and last but not least rehearsing and performing 2 concerts with the wind-band I play in...So I had no time to spare to read the forum or to scrap!
I had a great time...more details see...nkotb 11 alumni thread..
