I'm typing with a singing child in my lap that should be sleeping....i did a lo with 3 pics on a treasuremap from pirates of the carib wall paper jpg i think it was. i have pse2 with 128 ram and xp...i know i'm ram deprived...anyways, i put some scrolls with text and a gif of a treasure chest. saved in photoshop format fine....flattened, resized to 6" and 72 dpi and then save for web. once i adjust to less than 125 k, which is 2 in quality, btw. i get an error. I have c (40 gb hd) set as scratch drive...i close everything down, restart etc, set at 5 inches high etc....any suggestions? i really wanted to send this as a thank you card via email to my cousins in calif for the playmobil pirate set they sent my son.

I don't have probs saving other files, largewr etc.

thanks,

marcy shhhhh she's about out and gone

You don't HAVE to use the "save for web" feature. I just resize my layout down. Then file>save as choose JPG and filename_web. Then adjust the compression down to below 125K

Quality of 2?!
That low, really?

What does the quality look like at that point? Are you sure you have JPEG selected in the file type? Can you send some more info?

Yes, you can just do Save As, but if Save for Web is acting up, let's find out why.
What size did you resize to? I use 600px tall for web layouts, or 550px tall. The nice thing about Save for Web is that it makes it 72dpi automatically, and you see the quality preview. In PSE3 you can resize it right in that dialog, no separate step!

but I don't think my quality ever changes that much in that window. You asked what size I changed it to...first I did 6 inches and then I did 5. It is a strange size...8 by 11.3 or something like that. But that shouldn't matter that much should it? If I resize it to 6" inches tall, it should still work, right? I just click on save for web and the window comes up with a slider on the right along with some other info that I never mess with and then the preview on the left with the before and after (along with file size underneath). I don't see anywhere that I check anything about jpg, but it does save as a jpg, when it works, that is. Wait, I think I remember there being a place gif on there. I can't have it open and the web browser at the same time or I get memory problems.....Ummm, I'm not sure what other info you might need. Let me know and I'll send it.

Thanks for the help!

I had to go down to a 1 on quality in order to be under 125K. You can see it in my gallery - Andrew and the Pirates. It's weird, but it seems like the print on the scrolls on the left is what is really taking the hit on quality. Maybe the font is causing the problems? It's JSL Ancient. I don't remember where I downloaded it. I'll look around and see if I can find out about it.

Thanks!

I use JSL Ancient all the time, one of my faves. Did you flattent he alyout first? The more color variation in a layout, the more compression it needs to be under file size, but I have NEVER had to go under about 50 to get it under 100k.

How many pixels is 5 inches? I have no idea...like I said, I use pixels, so whatever 500-600 is, use the equivalent in inches. When you resize, do you change the 72dpi? The Save for Web does that automatically, but then I'm not sure the height is the same.

I'd flatten, change to 72 dpi, 500px tall (whatever wide), then Save for Web and put the quality slider down until it's under 100k or 125k, and see what the quality looks like. Sounds like you either have a bug or you're not resizing it correctly and making a gigantic file!

I flattened, 72 resolution...3600 pixels is 12", so 6" would be 1800 pixels. If you do 500-600 pixels, then you are resizing to about 2" tall! I guess it is all the color variation in the map that was causing the problems. I haven't had a problem resizing to 6" tall, so now I know that I can get a good look from 2"! (I think my small RAM size compunded the problem.)

Did you take a look at the page? I can't tell a drop in quality today. It's here:

I hope that link works!

Thanks for your help!
