You get a bit of a break this month! There are no current sketch calls up for publication, so this one is just for fun and to stretch our creative muscles! (Of course, magazines love two page layouts, so feel free to submit it anyway!!)

Here's what I came up with:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/data/5062/2-pg-sketch_-Mar08_-meg.jpg

Strong horizontal movement, lots of open space, and prominent title. This one could be great for either a graphic or paper style layout. As always, this sketch is your starting point, feel free to change it, add to it, or simply use just a bit of it to get you started!

Post your layouts in the Next Step gallery! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I finished my example for you! Learnin' 'bout Lady Bugs (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=245844)

You'll see I didn't keep right to the sketch. My photos cross over the middle of the two pages, I used a flower in the circle spot, moved pieces of the title around, jogged the focus photo up a bit, etc. But I still maintained that strong horizontal and the basic layout of all the pieces.

Have fun with yours, enjoy playing!!

HAHA, just kidding! You have to submit for publication after all!

Okay, no stressing. CK just released their next set of sketches and there is one due April 4th, so I wanted to let you all know about it and give you the option of using it instead of mine. Here are the details:

1. Using the sketch as a guide, create a well-executed, memorable layout to submit to CK. Please note: This sketch is for our September 2008 issue. You aren’t required to use seasonal pictures, but they are a plus.

Use solid-colored cardstock, patterned paper or textured paper—whatever works best for your layout. Choose the page size (8 1/2" x 11" or 12" x 12") you prefer. You can scrapbook black-and-white or color photos—it doesn't matter.

NEW!: We're now publishing single pages inspired by one side of the sketch as well. Let's see what you can do!

2. Special Instructions

September 2008 Instructions: One photo takes center stage as the focal point, while the other 10 or so pictures play a role as supporting visuals to whatever story it is that you choose to share on this layout. There is plenty of room for the title and journaling to be “connecting element” of everything on the layout. Due April 4, 2008.

3. When your layout is complete, e-mail an electronic version to editorial@creatingkeepsakes.com. Be sure to include "Becky's Sketch" in your subject line. Note: Attached files MUST be less than 300K. Include a supplies list for the layout as well.

Sorry, Meg, this does not take my fancy  as much as the one you proposed at the start of this thread. Yet more 3x2 pics and, horrors, two of them across the join...
Better get on with that, soon!

Meg, do you know how much I have to stick to the original sketch to possibly get published in CK? For example, could I make the 3x2 squares as 3x4 and then make the 5x7 larger so it still kind of looks the same? Or do they really want you to stick to it pretty exactly?

I want to do some wedding photos of the bride and groom cutting the cake...but mostly they're vertical photos.

Thanks much for all your help! :-)

From what I've seen, the measurements are basic suggestions for getting everything to fit. As long as the end result is still somewhat recognizable, I think it's okay. I've seen photos cropped into circles, large photos taking up whole pages and the smaller ones on top, etc.

Do what works for you and submit anyway, you never know!

Thanks for your incredible challenges. I think I'm growing into some new scrapbooking spaces :-)

Just letting y'all know, I won't be posting April's challenges until the 6th or 7th. I figured we have enough challenges going on during birthday week to keep us all busy!

I'll see you then!

Oh dear... I see the CK sketch isn't due till April 4th. Do you think mine is close enough to the sketch to submit? Think I can submit without journaling?
