I use this very frequently to edit my text. I have to go into Window>Character to get the pallette to be visible. I thought that if I just closed it by clicking the "x" in the upper right hand corner, that it would dock itself to my pallette well - but it doesn't. I always have to go to Window>Character to open it. What am I doing wrong?

I use that ALL the time and got tired of always opening it so I rearranged my palette bar like so....

Then, I saved my desktop so it always looks like this... Window>Workspace>Save workspace.
It's also an icon in the text options bar:

I would like to have my Character & Paragraph pallettes set up the way you do - but my workspace seems too small for it. How do I get them docked together like you have, so that their tabs are right next to eachother? And where would I put them on my right hand side of my screen? I've attached a screen shot - hopefully.
Nope - wait - my screenshot is way too small. I'm working on it ...

OK - here's my screen shot - I hope...
In 110 Lesson 1 section 1, it shows you how to drag palettes together to put the tabs onto one window. With limited workspace, turn your monitor resolution up; it'll make things smaller so you can fit more. Also, try making some of your palettes as small as possible. YOu have to be picky with limited space too. Like I said, with 2 monitors I have a lot more open than I do with 1 monitor.
If it's docked to the palette well, all you have to do is drag the tab off to leave it open while using it. Then close it to redock it. That's what I'd do in your situation. Unless you can live without one of those already taking up your space, or use less and can dock it instead.

You can drag the tabs of the palettes you don't use often up to the palette well up top. Then just drag the tabs into different formations until you find one that works for you.
