View Full Version : HELP! - Text Inside a Curve

This is something I thought I had figured out at one point and now I just can't get it! I've created a new vector layer, created the oval I want, got the top part of the saying on top so it is on the outside of the oval, but now I want the second part of the text to be on the inside of the oval, not upside down on the outside of the oval.

I know there is probably some small, but very major thing I'm missing here. HELP!

ok.. see if I remember.

You just type your text to go on the outside of the shape, then you select the vector text, right click, and choose node edit, now reverse path, then quit node edit.

I think this should work. I don't have PSP open right now and I can't seem to open it. my computer is not cooperating so I may have to reboot

hth, or maybe someone else will know for sure

oh.. I think it will be upside down or backwards and you have to turn it around

I'm closer...but still missing something. I've got the text on the outside of the oval. I can select it with the object selection tool, but when I right click I don't get the edit node command. I do get the edit node command when I right click using the pen tool, but that doesn't select the text I want even though I'm on that vector layer. Does that make sense?

Or rather, the pen tool, when I right click gives me edit -> Reverse path or Edit -> reverse contour. I think that's what I want, but neither of them are dark where you can actually select that action which tells me I still don't have what I want selected.

Well, I don't know what I did, but I got it selected with the object selection tool, and converted it to something and the whole thing was showing all the nodes. Then I right clicked, and went to reverse contour and it crashed psp. SIGH. I think I clicked on something else not realizing it was working.

I think I've got it...just need to recreate what I lost - at least I wasn't too far into this one. :)

Nope. But now I know how to get the nodes to be selected! Will wait until someone can figure out what I'm missing/doing wrong.

Janet, when I create my shape beginning at the top left and go to the bottom right, the text is left to right on the outside.

When I create my shape beginning at the top right and go to the bottom left, my text is in the inside (and not reversed). That or take your shape and grab a corner and "turn it inside out" -- was just working with this for a quote yesterday and it worked.

Finally got a breather to play around with your suggestion, Pam, of creating the shape by dragging one way or the other....WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!!!!! I KNEW it had to be something simple. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! :D :D :D

this is probably the longest way to do what you want.... but i just use one of the arrow shapes (the one that doesn't look like it has a twist in it) I stretch it way out so that the points of the arrow are not within the area I want my text to curve and i make the in 'U' curve of the arrow match the oval or circle I want. (I also like to make the arrow just be on outline with no fill)

I hope someone figures out the easier way to do this and shares it with us all - this one drives me crazy! it's a simple thing we want it to do why can't it just do it

Pam, what a great tip, tfs!

I just use the Leading function for the text. I put it on the path, it'll be on the outside, then adjust Leading to make it go up (negative Leading) and be insdie the shape

Any help or tips Please if possible

I am new using PSP 9 I have ben using PSP 7.

Here is a layout I did yesterday that i am quite happy with and I did it very quickly however i did get into strife aligning text to a curve/Ellipse.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=26427&password=&sort=2&cat=500&page=1

I actually ended up doing the Timothy's by deforming each letter along the circle

However its been bugging me today and would still like to know how to do this.

I can Put text above and below the line of the top part of the circle using offset and can move the text around the outside of the circle depending on my alignment point

Trouble when I try to get it inside bottom part of the circle where it is in the picture.
I tried drawing the ellipse from bottom right to top left but that didn't work either.

What the book says is
select object
Choose pen edit mode
right click to get edit further options and reverse contour path. Then use a Offset/Kerning etc to properly align above or below the circle line.

However when I select the Ellipse object I don't have any ellipse 'handles to reverse and this option isn't available when I go to the submenu actually all the edit options are greyed out. Why ?

OK so undetered I thought I'd try to just draw a line using bezier curve the shape of the bottom half of the circle. and then use Leading/offset options to move above and below the line

woo that curve tool is very scary

Does anyone have any tips on how to draw bezier lines easily. I just can't seem to get a handle on it.lol...... Although this one obviously has a 'handle' (lol again) on it and i can reverse path and do the sub edit options ... I couldn't seem to get past the start . I dragged the mouse and clicked to get my second node position but then it seemed to be pot luck if I could drag a curve around or not....... durrrr confusing stuff

I can do another workaround using a free form line and adding the text to that but this is like a little itch that I am scratching and want to learn how to align inside the circle in the spot of my choice so i don't resort to the taking each letter and manipulate Sue style method.

Hoping someone can put salve on my itch, its driving me potty.

Hello Timmysmum :)

Have you sorted out your Text inside a circle yet? its been a while since ur post but some people just find longer winded ways of doing something instead of the shorter easier way and never bother asking the question again.

its really quite simple....but like everything.....WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!

Most of this you already know but follow these steps anyway.

TEXT INSIDE A CIRCLE (VALID FOR PAINT SHOP PRO 9 +10 and possibly earlier versions)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Select your shape tool and choose a circle shape
2) Choose a foreground colour for the circle that will show up on your canvas
3) Deselect your background colour (we dont want a solid circle, just an outline)
4) Draw your circle where you want it (if your drawing this on a large image, you may need to expand the 'width' field in the toolbar at the top of the screen to 5 or 6 so its easy to see the circle)
5) Click the Pen tool (the circle should now have a box around it and drag lines in the middle)
6) Right click the image and choose 'Convert to path'
7) Right click EXACTLY on the left NODE (small square box on the left of the circle)
8) On the menu that pops up, select Edit ---> Reverse Contour
9) Now select your TEXT tool and make sure its set to 'Floating' NOT 'vector', then set the colour, size etc and LEFT click anywhere ON the circle line. (The text cursor icon "A" will change to show a curve under it when you are over the circle) Your text should now appear inside the circle
10) Make sure the Layers pallete is visible then right click on the 'Vector' layer that has been created (which is actually just containing the circle), right-click it and choose 'Delete' from the menu. All that will be left is your text and your main image.

If the text isnt in the right place, just Undo it and Click on the curve someplace else. The text will always appear centered either side of where you click if you have 'text justified' in the toolbar selected.

TEXT OUTSIDE A CIRCLE (VALID FOR PAINT SHOP PRO 9 +10 and possibly earlier versions)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Select your shape tool and choose a circle shape
2) Choose a foreground colour for the circle that will show up on your canvas
3) Deselect your background colour (we dont want a solid circle, just an outline)
4) Draw your circle where you want it (if your drawing this on a large image, you may need to expand the 'width' field in the toolbar at the top of the screen to 5 or 6 so its easy to see the circle)
5) Now select your TEXT tool and make sure its set to 'Floating' NOT 'vector', then set colour, size etc and LEFT click anywhere ON the circle line. (The text cursor icon "A" will change to show a curve under it when you are over the circle) Your text should now appear wrapped around the outside of the circle
6) Make sure the Layers pallete is visible then right click on the 'Vector' layer that has been created (which is actually just containing the circle), right-click it and choose 'Delete' from the menu. All that will be left is your text and your main image.

If the text isnt in the right place, just Undo it and Click on the curve someplace else. The text will always appear centered either side of where you click if you have 'text justified' in the toolbar selected.

It may seem a lot of steps but they are all very simple steps u do without thinking and ive made it as foolproof as possible by making all the steps. Hope this helps you or anyone else who has struggled so long with this, theres no-one on the web it seems ever bothered to post this info (or they dont know how to do it). It took me a while to figure it out too but now, no-one should struggle, its a 4 second job when uve done it a few times :)

Ciao

ok I managed to curve the text, but now the words have dotted lines around it and I can't remove them. usually when you click on another option, those go away, but they just won't. HELP!!!!

try making the Foreground color invisible by clicking the Null icon in the Materials palette under the foregrond color chip; or you can make the Line Width 0 in the Options Bar

If it's dotted lines from the Text Tool, then just grab another tool and they'll go away

They are the dotted lines from the text tool(I beleive), their all around the letters, not one square around the word(know what I mean?) Just as if I had use the freehand selection tool and traced around the letters, and it doesn't go away if i click on another tool.

So that if I paste something else on the image, it shows up in my letters because they seem to be selected for something, but I just can't figure out what for.

ah, you made text as a selection instead of vector

in the Options Bar at the top, with the Text Tool active, open the drop down menu and change Selection to Vector and try again

Those "marching ants" are the selection shaped like your letters. Just Ctrl-D to deselect it, or Selection>Select None
