View Full Version : GC JULY: Tint-afy Your Layouts
Nicole Young
07-02-2008, 05:58 PM
Ok...so maybe tintafy isn't really a word. But in the digiscrapping world we have our own language and once you do this challenge, you can tintafy to your hearts content!
Chris (Gundimom) was awesome enough to suggest this month's challenge:
Here is her layout where she tinted her photo to match the kit used:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/data/3061/sweet-happy-girl-gundi.jpg
or go see it for yourself....
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=263508
So your challenge is to "tint" a photo and create a layout using any DSP products!
Submit your layout to the Graphically Challenged Thread and through a link up in this thread by July 31st.
And be entered to win a $3.99 store coupon. A random drawing will occur at the end of the month!
And to get you PS users started right...here is a tutorial on photo tinting....

BTW: if you guys ever have "graphically challenged" challenge suggestion or you created a cool layout using "graphic" techniques. Send me a PM and I will try to get it up as a future month's challenge :)

Oooh, this DOES look like a challenge....and one that will go well with DET Bootcamp for the 'monochramatic' scheme challenge.
what to do, what to do, what to do???
Great idea, Gundi!!

Jill the way I did mine would work really easily in PSP as well. Convert your picture to black and white, then on a separate layer "color" in the areas you want tinted, using a low opacity paintbrush. Another option would be to color in full opacity and then just change the blending and opacity on the layer. The difference would be that with option 1, it would look more like real tinting because you are going to have little areas where you go over twice and therefore those parts would be darker. Option 2 would be homogeneous across that whole area. :D HTH LMK if there are questions.

Oh yeah one other pointer, on my picture, I didn't do a straight B/W picture, I added in a sepia tint as well, running it thru VP a couple of times, so it doesn't HAVE to be pure B/W.

Or you could take a photo, duplicate it, convert the original to black and white, paste the bw copy on top of the color, and then erase what you want to show through. That's what I did here:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/data/500/thumbs/Proud_upload1.jpg (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showphoto.php?photo=225027&ppuser=17887)
Proud (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showphoto.php?photo=225027&ppuser=17887)
Of course, that only works if the original photo has the "tint" that you want.

Ok, silly question, but how do I put a link in from this thread and where is the graphically challenged thread - do you have to put it there too?? Is there a tute for how to do this? Did a lo for NKOTB13 and people have said it will fit this challenge so I want to put it in here too. Thanks, if someone could help me that would be great.
Carolyn :)
Nicole Young
07-05-2008, 06:05 PM
Not a silly question at all Carolyn!!! Here is a great tut that will help, and if you have your layout out up in the NKOTB gallery, then you don't need to put it in the graphically challenged gallery, just needs a link here in the GC thread :)
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/dsp_Links_ep.shtml
Thanks Nicole, will give it a try.
Carolyn
Ok, now going to try putting link in for my lo - if something goes wrong it is called Fairies Final in round 2 NKOTB13 gallery. I have tinted the wings on my "fairies" - OK here goes :)

Yeah, it worked, that was reasonably simple! If people could comment or cc I would appreciate it
Thanks Everyone for the great inspiration

This was a fun challenge! I have been spending most of my time in NKOTB13, but I had some free time today so I decided. to jump in here. I may add another LO later, the one I am working on for round 3 is also "tint-afied". Thanks for looking and CC is most welcome.

Nicole, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed learning this. The tutorial was clear, and I was able to follow it step by step. I made my photo black and white, then colored one part, then worked with the second technique to add a new and different color from the black and white.
Now that I've made a start on this, I'll look forward to doing more of it. :)

Okay, I had to do 2 this month as I struggled with which style and figured what the heck...it's supposed to fun right :p They both use Rene Bross's Cool Summer Kit (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8510) and the photos were taken at the same moment..ornate vs. whimsical
And I have a question for once....are the layouts supposed to be new ones or do past layouts that have this effect applied applicable? Just curious

Oops! I guess I missed the boat. I tinted the entire photo on the layout I planned to use for this, as the note I wrote in my planner was to tint a photo.Next time I will revisit the thread before scrapping.
