oh, that could be part of the problem...

when you create a .jpg vs. a raw file...

the camera tries to make some assumptions. some of them bad.. like over sharpening

that might have caused the grainy-ness you see...

I don't know why I decided to get a more complicated camera than the one I had. But I do have to say that even on auto, it takes much better photos than the other one in low light. Yay. My class will be either this month or Sept. Maybe I'll take both cameras to Sea World. Gary will love that! :D

OK guys! Here's the scoop! My "free" internet seems to have disappeared. There is a second one but the signal is not nearly as good and I can't trust it. And I've just about reached my limit on not being able to even catch a brief news cast! Heck, the world could blow up and I wouldn't know a thing. (just like the dark ages around here). So, we finally biting the bullet and getting our own cable and internet. Thing is, it won't be installed until Thursday. Until then, being here is completely unreliable and the only way it works in on my computer. The lappie just can not handle that low a signal. So, long story to say: I might not be around much!

So, no long winded talking for a while! OK? Please? (yeah, I know it's useless to ask, but still had to!)

Chris - you can't go to a crop without a laptop, can you? Yikes, what a dilemma. Glad it's you deciding and not me.

This is at ISO 400, f/5, 1/2 sec. at 100 mm .
I am using a 36 mm extension tube and the same lens you have.. the 50-135 f/2.8. No flash just very diffused light from a window about 8 feet from the subject.

If I had the camera set to AUTO ISO, it would have been well over 1600. I just went back into the room to check. But using MY selection for ISO, the shutter time was much longer (1/2 sec) which introduces less grain over the longer exposure time.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes, that is indeed Spike ! he has been hanging in his tank except for his portrait session. he doesn't bite nor is he too active. Spike, the loafing lizard...I was actually gently poking him with the eraser end of a pencil trying to make him "puff" out his beard but no luck. And he just sat there while I did it... Not a very active critter. Robin says he does move pretty fast when she feeds him his crickets.

Oh, I just saw this and it works in PSE too!

Open both your working document and your photo.
In your working document select the marquee tool and draw the space where the photo will go.
Now, open your info palette (go to Window > Info)
Make a note of the size of the area marked.
Now, go to your photo. Select the crop tool.
In the Options bar, type in your measurements and the resolution of your working document (don't forget the resolution or it still will not be the right size)
Now Crop. Drag and Drop! Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) > D to Deslect your area and move photo into place!

Voila! It's like magic!
THANK YOU!!! I will have to try this way also!

ahhhh no wonder you didn't ask me when you saw me IRL

Oh yeah guys the one good thing about my stupid laptop, I was over at Heather's BIL trying to get him to fix it and guess who showed up?!!! I even got to meet her dh whom I have only pestered on Yahoo, saying please get Heather I need her NOW.
I was SO happy to see you again!

oh my goodness I reached the end! That was like a journey in and of itself.

Well keep your fingers and toes crossed, HP said they would fix my lappie for free. I think cuz it is a recall issue. The only problem is they said it would take NINE days. Now let's all count here, who thinks I will get it back before next Friday! uggggggg So now I am debating whether to get a new one and give the old one to my kids since their computer is approximately as old as DIRT and the wireless adapter on it died. That way I would have one for during the crop. Uggggg what to do, what to do. I hate getting too worked up on stuff like this until I have it back fixed, in my hands etc. I don't want them saying, oh we won't fix it cuz of the atmospheric conditions over Mars or some other such nonsense.

OK now where did everyone go?
Just buy another one, why not????:lol:
LOVED algebra, physics and calculus..
HATED geometry and trig.

It has bee such a long month and I'm ready to just get my life back in order!! I do have another question though!! I printed my sister invites to see how they would turn out and they look terrible! They look SO good on the computer! I sent them to another place wondering if it was Wal-Mart, but my mom said they weren't great either. They look grainy, the font and all. That is why I was wondering if I should resize my pics smaller first, which didn't do anything. I don't think it's my pictures because the font looks bad also. What else could it be?? I am getting sick about it since she wants them to get printed. :help: Do any of you have any ideas?

In my PSE6, I can only see itty bitty samples of the font, so I don't know what they really look like unless I try all of them. In a font manager, apparently you can see them bigger and compare fonts side by side to decide which one you want to use. Also Robyn said that you can install/uninstall them from the font manager, and that's beneficial because too many installed fonts is supposed to slow down your PSE or PS or whatever. My main thing is to be able to see them bigger to know which one I want to use.

Heather, What resolution did you work in? I know that many people have complained about the quality when you print a 200 resolution file. Also, what size are you scrapping them in. They aren't stretching it any to make the print are they? (I'm sure that's not it, but I have to ask.) Beyond that I can't think of a thing. Hope someone else comes along and can help more.

Oh my gosh, I have not clue about the resloution, because I just use what my kits are and since I didn't use one maybe it's really low! Oh I hope this is the solution, that would be SO easy to fix!! The size and printing are the same so that's not a problem. I'll be back with the answer to the res.

They make it easy to leave lots of your less frequently used fonts uninstalled. Then you can load it when you need it, which is only temporary. Keeps your computer happier if you don't have 2000 fonts installed. :D

On the archery thing, I tried it for the first time EVER up at girl's camp last summer. The girls were laughing at me cuz I kept closing my eyes when I would shoot. I noticed when I went with Zach to scout camp a few weeks ago, I did the same thing! Sorry your arm hurts! hugs!

When you have a laptop - with a tiny screen like 15 inch..

You can add a nice big 22 inch monitor...

And, see your beautiful layouts better...

You can work on both monitors at once.

or just the big one at home..

and, the laptop screen when you go on the road

very versatile

and, great set up!!

I have been doing some research along the lines of that camera... you need to be careful with lens choice, as it has no in-camera focus motor... therefore you would need to watch out for what lenses would work with it.... The LENS would need a focus motor. That has been the problem with the D40 and D60...certain lenses won't work. Any lens that won't work with a specific model camera has that info noted in the lens tech specs.

If you think you'd want to use your old film lenses, then you would probably be better off with a D90 which also shoots video AND can work with any lens. It is basically my camera ( same sensor, metering system, same MP, same focusing system) with the addition of the video and the presets.

The D5000 ( currently $664 body only at Adorama http://www.adorama.com/INKD5000.html?searchinfo=nikon+d5000) has The kit lens, the 18-55mm wide angle. The 50 -200mm VR ( $250 http://www.adorama.com/NK55200VRU.html?searchinfo=55-200mm+nikon ) lens works on it .. From my reading, the 18-200 VR ($600 http://www.adorama.com/NK18200DXR.html?searchinfo=55-200mm+nikon) lens works as well. The 18-200 VR would be a lens that would NEVER need to come off the camera. But I think for that amount of cash for a variable aperture lens, you could spend the same amount for the Tokina 50-135 f/2.8 and have a considerably faster, pro level lens. http://www.adorama.com/TN50135NKAF.html?searchinfo=tokina+50-135

You are going to have my camera at your disposal when I come up and a selection of lenses to play with. So you can give them all a whirl. I personally think lens selection is like underwear...some feel better than others. And some just work better for the average daily situations.

I had the 50-200 mm , which I loved, and was inexpensive and great to learn on.. then i sprang for the external flash which makes a HECK of a difference for indoor shooting. Once I started to expand my knowledge and skill, and the money became more available, ONLY THEN did I spring for the more costly lenses.

Shipping runs about $47.00 to Alaska by the way.. even if it says FREE SHIPPING. Seems nothing is free to that distance.

Hmmm...beginning to think I should check into Font Managers for my Mac!

I ONLY have a nikon because that is what my film camera was and i was comfortable with it.
Nikon and Canon offer very similar bodies, lens choices etc. Each have their stronger or weaker points.
Regardless of brand IT'S STILL ONLY A CAMERA.. it's ONLY the HARDWARE that puts YOU in the drivers seat ! you can spend $5000 on a camera and lens, but what makes it work is what YOU do with it, how you choose to use it and the creative potential YOU SEE. You can still take images that are just as crappy as those you get with a $150 point and shoot if you don't take the time to learn the hardware. ( think of it as learning CS4 as opposed to drag and drop)

Well, yes, although I have noticed that Canon users tend to be, well, how to put this politely, snobs? (and I don't mean any of those here BTW, I'm talking the sales people and that sort of thing). Nikon users tend to be a little less particular. Since my film camera is a Nikon, I have been leaning that way too, but don't know if any of the lenses would work. Another thing that we need to explore. I know there are some models that they work on, just not sure which.

Excellent points, Carolyn. And Lisa, that made me laugh! I always owned Canon P&S cameras, several of them. But when I got my DSLR, I went with Nikon. Two reasons... price and fit. The price point on the Nikon D40 was right for me. More importantly after holding a lot of cameras, the D40 just felt right in my hand. There is a lot to be said for how a camera "fits" you.

I agree Michele, and when I do get to "buy" a new camera, I will be spending a lot of time in the camera shop. We have one here in Anchorage that has the best selection. The deal with all kinds of people including a ton of high-class professionals, so they carry even the dreamiest of top of the line lenses and stuff. Of course, if I remember, they were a bit partial to Canon, but I can overlook that!

BTW - my DS#1 just said the cutest thing. Nearly fell out of my chair laughing. DH is working to get the cable pulled because we need the TV to sit in the opposite corner of the room from the one cable outlet. We are installing a whole new box and running the cable thru the crawl space. Anyway, he's using a power saw to cut thru the drywall and a piece of plywood behind it and making lots of noise. DS, "Hey, pipe down over there, we can't here our show!" I really split my side on that one.

I know there are some models that they work on, just not sure which.

that would be something we can try.. putting your lenses on my camera ! I'll bring my manual because in the back there is a list of lenses that will work on the body... howerver, they probably WILL NOT auto focus.. some of the older lenses are manual focus only.

I'm thinking you and Chris should have an interesting time fiddling with my equipment. I have a plethora of lenses and filters, and my newest toys- extension tubes. Great fun. If nothing else, you will both get an idea of what type of lens you are looking for with your intital purchase... whether it be canon or nikon. I'm not judgmental..

and it is true what Michelle said.. it's how it fits in your hands that makes the sale. Mine will be a bit heavier .

idtwinmom
08-02-2009, 06:37 PM
A bit heavier than what? I'm used to a P&S so everything is heavier. I haven't used my film camera in so long it hurts and the last time I did, I took lousy pics. You just can't buy good film these days and I have forgotten all the rules. They are autofocus lenses, but some of the newer cameras can't access the system or is it that my autofocus engine is in the wrong place. Don't know because I haven't investigated that much. I get frustrated building the "dream" purchase when there is no way to actually buy. DH on the other hand, can build those dreams all day long and be happy just doing that.

A bit heavier than any other camera body you may have had the chance to fondle.
if the lenses are auto focus, then they should be usable..they may not engage with the metering system, but we'll see ! Better to invesitage BEFORE the purchase, then you have a better idea of where you are going with it.

I give you guys kudos for wanting to deal with wide format printers. I'm basically lazy and dont' want to deal with the ink, paper etc. I hate dealing with the little inkjets lurking around here !

WHEW!!! what a weekend. My daughter moved back home as Tim was moving out. To say this place looks like a bomb went off....would be an understatement. Tim, by the way, is now living about 1/4 mile from home.... the 3 family home is owned by a friend's Dad,, 3 bedrooms, livingroom, kitchen... and he's only charging them $700/month. He's on the third floor, 2 friends of his live on the second floor and the owners daughter and fiance live on the first. The fiance and Time have been friends since they were 8...so the father (owner) has a good group of reliable, employeed, respectful people populating his house.

And that was kinda with the understanding that I would sell the P&S, but it hasn't sold, and I'm not really pushing it that much, because I want to keep it to take with me in my purse. Since we're talking about kids moving back in, here's an update on my DS. He called me last week and asked if he could have some money for food or come to the house and get some of our groceries. I told him no since I had given him $160 a week and 1/2 earlier for food, but instead of buying groceries, he went out to eat numerous times with friends, and spent all that money AND managed to overdraw his checking account by $187! He emailed me yesterday saying his phone had been turned off, he was stressed, had no money for gas or food, couldn't find his keys. He says he was supposed to start a job today, but I think he's lying to me. I told him the only thing I could do was to bring him an extra key to his apartment. So I took DH with me, so Drew wouldn't try to start a fight when he didn't get his way. We took the key to him and he asked what he was supposed to do now. I said, "Well, the things we have been telling you were going to happen are now finally happening, and you need to figure it out yourself. I've given you advice for 2 years now that you haven't listened to, so you have to work it out yourself." So he asked to borrow Gary's phone to call his dad. He has NO relationship with his dad. His dad maybe sees him about once every 2 or 3 years, and has never helped out except for court ordered child support, which has been over for 2 years now. So I don't know what happened with that conversation, but if he does help, it will maybe be $50 or so, I'm guessing, not enough to pay his rent or bills or anything. So Drew is a bit stressed right now. But he's got to figure it out. I still can't believe he's not been evicted. He came to family dinner Wed night and ate a bunch! But he acted mad the whole time, I'm guessing because we wouldn't give him any money or groceries. I've given him names of churches and organizations here in town that feed the homeless and hungry. It's hard for me to know he has no money for food, but he's got friends that I think are feeding him right now, and he needs to figure it out and get a job. I've done everything I know to do. He constantly says, "I'm your own son. I wouldn't let this happen to you", but I know he's just trying to manipulate. He had talked about joining the Navy, and Gary went with him to go talk to them when I was in Austin, but then didn't go back the next day like he was supposed to to take a test. Fun times. ;)

What kind of lizard is he? When I was taking photos of the iguanas in Mexico, I was terrified one was going to start running at me!

He's a bearded lizard... much smaller than an iguana !

Yeah, sooner would work for me. :D I do OK as long as I keep busy, but in those moments (like now) when I'm the only one up, and alone with my thoughts, it gets tough. I think another thing that makes it difficult is that I've been working on his baby/childhood album, and it takes me back to the easy years. I miss those times when he wasn't angry at me all the time.

I know how you feel iwth having a child angry at you all the time. Buddy and I fought about school starting the second day of KINDERGARTEN ! And the battle lasted up to 2 days before high school graduation. Funny as it sounds, i DID NOT realize what a sweet natured kid he was until he graduated...we had the 800 lb gorilla of school off our backs- finally. And it was only then, ehen he wasn't growling at me , did he actaully let ME see what a sweetie lurked underneath.

Oh, please! Tell me it won't be that long for me and DS#2. there are no guarantees ! Bud is definitely a free spirit who just can't sit in one place for long.. so sitting in a classroom was torture for the poor kid. He is your classic kinetic learner.. hands on..give him something that interests him and he's like a dog with a bone. But if the interest is not there... well let's just say he slept through 4 years of english. ( yes, literally... several of his teachers commented on his snoring ! ) I was shocked at lunch today when he chimed in that he was ready for summer to be over. (I think it's time for you to get here and show them how much fun summer can really be!)Mine were ususally ready to go back at least for the social stuff if nothing else. when the kids are small, pretty much their entire social circle is in school and all are at the mercy of their parents work schedule/car availablity to transport them . Getting back to school was far more interesting than just hanging around the neighborhood/babysitter/daycare. Once they got cars tho, that changed BIG TIME. Plus, your guys know that they will be in a new school, so they are probably anxious to see how things work, see the kids, and it's FIRST GRADE.. so that is big stuff ! It's nice they are ready to go !

OK, so today I had to go to Sams, and for some crazy reason I was impulse buying. I don't usually do that, but something got into me today, so I ended up with bulk shaving cream, insect repellent, cookie dough, rice & noodle side dishes, and light bulbs. All I really intended to buy in bulk was razor blades for DH and coffee creamer for the office. Oh well. :D Anyway, I was looking at the books and I saw the book The Dare from the movie Fireproof (which DH and I loved even tho the acting wasn't that great), so I also bought it. I have about 10 unread books in my nightstand right now that I don't have time to read because I"m too busy scrapping, but I thought surely I could find the time each day to read one chapter. Gary and I have a fabulous marriage and I am really blessed, but I figured it couldn't hurt anything to read it and practice what it says and do the journaling. So that's what I'm going to do starting tonight. I am going to do a layout about the experience when it's done. Might be fun. Anyone want to do it at the same time as me? Mommy will give anything a try that makes her little ones smile, laugh out loud, and make joyful noise. We even have the very best place to play right behind the house.OK SOUNDS LIKE A DEAL !! I'll figure out teams... and since this is learning, there is no "scoring" at first. how are you at running ? Any knee problems? Cuz teams may be kids vs adults. (we'll get creamed! and kids will get a hoot outta beating the grownups. )

However, I may reserve some of the action time to get behind the lens of that camera of yours and take a few! Or maybe my own camera so that I know I actually get a few! :lol:and at that poiint, Miss Rai can be on my team that way I can keep an eye on her... if your boys are ANYTHING like mine, they will get rough and hog the ball. .

it's flag football without passing the ball.. just hiking and running. No tackling or pushing. Pulling the flag out of the pocket finishes the play. Except with me, they only need to tag me ( I'm taller and they'd need to stretch and possibly fall against my feet) Special rule in effect: if Miss Rai has the ball, she gets to run for the count of 5 before releasing the hounds. (that will give her more of a chance to get some yardage. ) Four tries to make it to the touchdown zone for the adults... six for the kids. ( note that I have eliminated pass blocking here.. to many face gouges! ) End zone dances are definitely allowed.

It's called The Love Dare and it's "a 40-day challenge for husbands and wives to understand and practice unconditional love". It's what Kirk Cameron was reading and doing in the movie. The first chapter is about patience. There's a few pages to read, a scripture that goes with the chapter - in this case, Ephesians4:2, and then an area to journal how the day went.

I'm doing it by myself, you don't have to do it as a couple, although you can. I read the first chapter today while sitting at the dentist office. I told Gary I was doing it and he said "You don't need to be a better wife. You're already a great wife." Awww......I just love him to pieces! :love3:

I have 2 really small cavities and apparently my teeth are worn down due to grinding them at night, so I have to have a night guard made and wear it at night. I'm waiting to have all this done until after our Florida trip. I don't sleep as it is, I can't imagaine how hard it's going to be to get used to sleeping with a guard in my mouth. :( But I guess that's better than having no teeth left when I'm older.

Then I had to take one of my doggies to the vet. She's drinking excessively, and just keeps getting fatter even though she's on weight control food. So the vet did some blood tests and her biliruben in high, and lots of other things with her blood work were out of wack. So he's afraid it's a liver issue (either hepatititis or cancer). I have to take her back in a week and leave her all day and he will repeat the blood work and then if the biliruben is still high he will do a scan of her liver and take it from there. She was abused before I got her about 6 or 7 years ago, and she is just the sweetest, most loving baby. I am praying it was just a werid fluke that her blood work was messed up. He said it might be, that's why he's going to repeat it in a week before doing anything else.

So that's been my day. I'm waiting for Gary to get home. He's going to take me out to "Prairie Dog Town" to practice with my camera.

You may find you sleep better once you get and are used to the guard. The teeth grinding may actually be hurting your sleep more than the guard will. (a former husband of mine was bad at that! Kept both of us awake sometimes!)

Rene - I did mean to mention that I really know what you are going through with your 4 legged baby. Since the whole $800 mouth surgery on ours we have been trying to discover why his kidney values are wrong. We have spent almost $100 more in tests and they want to do more (at a cost of $275 plus). And we still have major mouth work to do on the other dog. I'm really quite concerned, but he seems to have no symptoms at all. He doesn't even ask to go outside all that much.

I gave you all the wrong blog address. It's scrapsofalaska.blogspot.com. I will get there! Geez, I used to be a web designer and it still took over an hour to get the search box at the top! Now I can finish updating my Flair and siggie so that there is a permanent link!

Chris, got a question for you.
One of the guys that works with DH sent home some arthritis cream. He meant it for DH thinking his "pain" was his back not his surgery. Any way, I'm wondering if I would be able to use this stuff, but have been told that with my allergies even some topicals are not good for me. I am allergic to Aspirin and was told many years ago that Ibuprofin could be very dangerous (my heart rate skyrockets with just a little aspirin). The active ingredient in this stuff is Capsicum Oleoresin containing Capsaicin 0.025%. Would this be risky? Thanks in advance!

I think Debi might be working on her Trendsetters layout. Maybe that's why we haven't heard from her. I usually get emails or PM's every day, but haven't heard from her today, so my thinking is that she's busy on that.

It cost $179 today for the doggie blood tests, and will be the same next week, if that's all they do. Not sure how much the liver scans will be if they have to do those. She's 9 years old almost, so wasn't really expecting to be having something so serious at this age. Since Drew left home, my dogs have really become my babies, so I will just be devastated if something happens to her. She would be OK without the other dog, but my other dog WON'T be OK without her. I'd probably have to get another puppy to keep the other one company - not that I would mind that, but I'm just hoping she will be OK and I don't have to deal with anything bad.

I had wondered a couple of times if I was grinding my teeth at night recently because I would wake up with one side of my tongue really sore like I had bitten it. I think it must be stress, because I didn't used to do that.

Michelle, Prairie Dog Town is an area at one of our older local parks that a guy set up and financed a long time ago until his death in 1969 when he became concerned about the possible extinction on the prairie dogs. It's fenced in with a low fence and some kind of barrier underground to try to keep them in. It used to be really nice and the prairie dogs were so tame they would eat out of your hand, but I guess the parks dept doesn't take care of it as well any more and there aren't as many prairie dogs as there used to be. They also are scared of people now. I got a few pics, but they wouldn't let me get very close to them. They were scared and ran into their holes, so I had to settle for zooming in as close as I could.

I told Gary I was doing it and he said "You don't need to be a better wife. You're already a great wife." Awww......I just love him to pieces! :love3: can you clone him?

I have 2 really small cavities and apparently my teeth are worn down due to grinding them at night, so I have to have a night guard made and wear it at night. I'm waiting to have all this done until after our Florida trip. I don't sleep as it is, I can't imagaine how hard it's going to be to get used to sleeping with a guard in my mouth. :( But I guess that's better than having no teeth left when I'm older. :rolleyes:Night grinding, bruxism, is a stress symptom. Grinding tends to be cyclical. Everyone has stress at a level to which the body is accustomed. Then life throws thngs at you.. some big things, some small.. The big ones we know about, but the small things are there too: just wallowing around your brain. At night, the mind tends to free roam and those little things of which you are not really aware add to the stress level. And in your case, you grind your teeth. After a while the stress(es) will either resolve themselves OR your body accomadates to the new level of stress- and it becomes your "regular" stress level. At either of these times, the grinding will dissapate or disappear. Kids do it alot, but in most cases (but not all) is related to the eruption of the permanent teeth.

The motion of grinding is atypical- meaning your are using your teeth in a biting pattern not considered normal and functional. Most grinders have a pivot point and then "slide" the teeth in a specific direction. ( that's the noise you hear when someone is grinding.) The wear patterns caused by this are very specific to grinding. The enamel of the teeth will look similar to cut marble, small "dots" may appear on the tops of the molars where the points of the opposing teeth are wearing through. Fillings can break due to the exteme wear as well.

The biting pressure on the back teeth (molars) is measured in TONS per square inch, so you can only imagine the pressure put to bear on these teeth.

Symptoms of night grinding can include sore jaws around the area of the TMJ located in front of the ear, headaches upon waking, sore tongue, neck and upper back stiffness.

A night guard is generally pretty lightweight and takes about 2 weeks to get used to wearing. It prevents further wear on the tooth/filling surfaces. In some cases, it interfers enough with the habit so that you no longer derive the same unconscious "satisfaction" from it and the habit ceases. ( but this is pretty rare) . As I had mentioned before, most people find themselves stopping and starting at various times for seemingly no apparent reason.

I grind as well. I started October 8, 1998- the day my daughter got her license! And I've ground my way through drivers' ed with 2 more ! I have also ground my way through 3 nightguards ! Luckily, I can make them myself !

He's going to take me out to "Prairie Dog Town" to practice with my camera.did the vet say anything about the kidneys? When a similar thing happened to my cat, it was her kidneys shutting down due to exteme old age- she was 20. I hope the poor little thing starts to feel better.

Wow, thanks for all that info! I didn't realize the grinding could cause back and neck problems! Maybe that's what's wrong with my shoulders instead of too much chatting and scrapping!:rofl:

He said her kidney function seemed fine. She was dehydrated, which is weird since she's drinking so much!

Rene, what a day!  Hope your pooch ends up OK! You DO have a sweetie for a DH!

My DH wouldn't even read a book about fishing and that's his passion...so.................:annoyed:

Lisa, I so hope you have success in setting up your business! Sorry, I'm just not a blog-follower. I might become one when I discover two so-far unknown hours in the day.

Stitchie, I wonder if a person actually does *outgrow* grinding their teeth. My sister was horrid about that when growing up.

Leaving in the morning for the grandkids, and won't be back till sometime Saturday. Carry on without me! :)

Wonder where debilou is?

Have sooooooooooooooo much fun with the grands ! Play. Laugh. Love it all up.. and we'll be here when you get back..

Interesting to have a resident dental hygienist on board, eh?
Just to give you an idea... clench your teeth together really hard and feel how tight the muscles in the back of your neck and upper shoulders are. Now, imagine holding that postion for 6 hours ! Kinda what you are dong when you are grinding.

Rene, you gotta post me some pictures of prairie dogs... not a creature we see in Carolina. A park sounds interesting.

Wow, Carolyn, you are just full of information! I said before that I don't think I grind anymore, but after reading that I'm thinking I probably do. I wake up with a sore jaw and sometimes a headache when I'm over stressed. I knew it was a response to my stress, but I thought I was "clenching" my teeth, not "grinding" them. I've probably been keeping DH awake and he doesn't tell me. :D

GRINDNG is almost exclusively done at night and most people are unaware of doing it until someone tells them. CLENCHING is MOST OFTEN done during the waking hours but can also be a nightime thing... and the symptoms are basically exactly the same with the exclusion of the wear patterns. GRINDING ALWAYS SHOWS WEAR MARKS ON THE TEETH WHILE CLENCHING TYPICALLY DOES NOT.

YEAH, I'm just a font of trivia. LOL... but it IS my job!

when I was a kid and a grinder, my sister that shared a bedroom with me would throw things at me to make me shutup. My DH has never thrown anything at me so maybe I just clench now.:rofl::rofl: I am having a busy stressful day today and I realized a little while ago that I was clenching. I hope I don't grind after all that info! I think I'm good though. :)

Rene, which lense did you use for the photo? Was it the new one you bought? The pic looks so good.

We are half way through swimming lessons and 2nd dd is suppose to dive of the low diing board and won't do it. They taught them to sit, kneel & stand off the edge of the pool and then they can choose to stand or kneel on the board and she won't. So I bribed her to do it and so for 2 days now she leaves crying because she won't dive and so she won't get her toy! I should have never opened my mouth. Today I was in the pool trying to get her to go, but no way. She wants to but is scared of flipping under the water.
This morning my phone phone rings and it's a local grocery store calling saying that my dh won a grill. So I go pick it up and it's a portable grill that we just bought 2 weeks ago to take camping. So my mom wants to buy this one since we already have one. :yahoo: :yahoo:

Oh, the poor dear. My boys are very afraid of getting their faces wet. We gave them swim lessons last year, but I didn't push a second set. Although I really would love for them to know how to actually swim, it's not worth the trauma. I don't think I would try a bribe with them, it would only lead to headaches for me and more stress for them. I hope you find a way to comfort her.

awww, i'm sorry your DD is having a tough time. Will they let you go off the board with her? Or maybe she could go off first with a noodle. That might be enough to get her over the fear. I hope she can get up her nerve to do it. When my DS was little he would swim half way across the pool, but panicked when he knew he was over deeper (4ft) water. I bribed and cajoled and finally I had him swim halfway, turn around and swim the other half way back. So he knew he could go 25yd without stopping. That was enough to boost his confidence, and he took off and swam the whole 25yd. Then I had to buy him the toy I promised. He's been swimming on the swim team ever since, btw.

Since you're only 1/2 way through the lessons, do you think with some more time she will be able to do it? Maybe she'll decide she wants the toy so bad she'll just go for it.

So dd LOVES the water and swimming and does jump off the diving board, but won't dive! She said she'll do it tomorrow, but I'm not sure she will because she said that yesterday and she didn't today. So I guess we'll just see what happens. I have always been able to bribe her, and she has always tried everything, but I can see now, that if she is really scared about something, DON'T bribe her. I feel bad, but can't take it back now, she really wants that elephant. Maybe I'll have to think of some other way she can earn it. The joys of learning about parenting.

Yes, I took it with the Tokina f/2.8 lens. I really like the lens, I just wish it had more zoom to it.
there are other lenses with more reach, but to get them in a fixed aperture lens is wickedly expensive. Try looking at a vairalbe aperture lens along the lines of a 70-300 or 80-400. those will probably be f/4-5.6, or something along those lines.

Longer lenses like this have some weight to them, and becase the lens aperture varies when you zoom in and out, the lens will NOT focus as quickly in lower light situations..and you may notice it "hunting" a bit more. And then you may find yourself wanting a decent tripod.. which you may need to help get those shots tack sharp.. Takes a bit to handhold the longer lenses.. and because it's not recommended to shoot handheld any slower than the inverse of the longest focal distance ( 1/300, 1/400 respectively) you will either need to bump up your iso to maintain that faster shutter speed OR use a tripod.

Maybe this is going to sound like a really dumb question, and if it does, sorry in advance, but why do they call it a f/2.8 lens, when most of the time it seems to shoot in f/5.6?

I'm going to ask for a good tripod for Christmas, because the only one I have is the gorillapod I bought for the P&S so I could pack it easily in my luggage when we went on the cruise (then I never used it). I did use it for firework shots on 4th of July before I got the new camera.

Oh, she is sooooooo funny!

Well, so far I've had a busy morning. The phone and cable installer turned into "installers"! One called, I'll be there in...ding, dong! And the other showed up without calling while I was in the middle of dealing with a problem with the first. The phone set up is all wrong. It works, I have a phone plugged into it, but it wasn't hooked up the way we were informed. So, here I am with just one phone for a 3 story house!!!!! And it's on the second floor! Thank goodness it's cordless and I spend more time in my bedroom than anywhere else. I'm also trying to get the laundry done (don't want to have to run shorts while Carolyn is here) and do the last minute cleaning of bathrooms and stuff.

But, TV works, Internet works (yeah! no more fighting that super slow freebie!) and I do have both my cell and a house phone that works! Sort of!

Now to get lunch and see if I can't get something actually done around here!

I did use it for firework shots on 4th of July before I got the new camera.the lens itself has a constant fixed aperture of 2.8 You may have your CAMERA set to f/5.6. if you have your camera set on AUTO everything, the camera is automatically asjusting the aperture, shutter speed and iso to give you the best exposure it can given the lighting conditions.

The f/2.8 of the LENS allows max light into the lens which makes it focus faster.

Thanks for the bootcamp ideas! I went and looked at a thread that gave me some more ideas about photo pop, journaling and a couple other things. I like all the ideas, now just to decide what I think I can help most with. NOT MUCH!! I'm getting anxiety thinking about starting this up on Sunday. I know it will be fine, but I always want things to go just right so starting something new gives me stress!

My canlendar has nothing on it for August except swimming lessons, so I keep thinking I am not going to be so busy, but that's not the case. School shopping, church stuff, DET bootcamp , dentists, etc keep getting in my way of scrapping! Once someone told me "life never slows down, it just gets busier", I'm starting to believe them. Maybe in 3 weeks when 3 of my 4 kids will be in school all day.  I love my kids, but I am not one of those moms that cry when their kids go to school. I get a lot done when they are gone.

well greetings to all from Alaska... my flights were great, BUT my suitcase didn't arrive ! So I sit here looking even more like a bag lady than ususal. IT IS BEAUTIFUL HERE !!!! OMG...

No jet lag this morning.. have already been haunting the airlines and it turns out my luggage arrived on a flight that came in an hour later.... THANK GOODNESS as a lot of my camera equipment is in that bag!!!! Right now I feel as though my hands have been cut off.

Well, off to call Lisa.... she cracked me up last night....held a sign "DSP VIP LIMO" ... what a hoot !

My brain was so fried last night.... accoeding to my time zone, I arrived here at about 1 am...so basically, I pulled an all nighter. But feel far more refreshed this morning as I slep through the night AK time.

Hi!

Chris, I hope you are having a blast at the crop.

CaroD and Lisa, I'm betting are having fun!

Heather, don't stress too much! You'll be brilliant.

Not a lot going on here this Saturday. Gary and I went to go look at RV's this morning. We always try to think of something interesting to do on Saturday mornings. We start at Starbucks :D, then go run errands or figure out something to do. We have a small rv, but after having it for 3 years, we can see where there are things about it we would like to change (more counter space in the kitchen, room to walk around the bed, not having to straddle the toilet to look in the mirror to comb your hair or put your makeup on), so we have toyed with the idea of trading ours in on one that is laid out better since they are priced so well right now due to the economy. Don't know if we will, but we like to look.

Then we went over to my DMIL's house and showed her the FINISHED cruise album :yahoo: and Gary looked at her garage door opener to see what we needed to do to fix it.

That's about all that's going on here. Have a great weekend everyone!

Hey everybody! Chris I hope you're having you're having fun at Adobe. I'm sure you are. And I KNOW Carolyn and Lisa are having a blast!

Rene, RV browsing sounds fun, whether you end up getting a new one or not.

I spent my Saturday morning with DD's Marching Band. They just finished up two intense weeks of Band Camp. This morning they performed for the parents and then we had a picnic. This year I will have two band jobs... First I am the uniform mom. I fitted all the kids for uniforms last week and now have a dozen or so to alter- hems, darts, easy stuff. My second job this year is Historian, which means I am the PICTURE MOM! When that position came open I jumped on it. I mean, is there an easier, more fun job? I don't think so! I probably took more that 700 photos this week. Of course those will get weeded down to 200 or so. We have this scaffolding in front of our practice field and the past two days I climbed up to get aerial shots. I'm a little afraid of heights, but I did okay and got some great shots.

She loved it! She likes to look at my scrapbooking, especially my heritage stuff. I think she also likes to see photos of her son having fun. Gary is her oldest of 3 kids, and they've always had a special bond, because for many years when he was growing up, he was kind of the man of the house when there were problems with Gary's dad (his dad finally worked all that out before he passed away, thank goodness).

I will go where they go! I'll be at football games, parades, and competitions. We don't go too far out of town. If I can't make it to an event, I'll get someone to take pictures for me. Then at the end of the year I'll be putting together a slide show. That's something new I'll have to learn. Oh and I don't do too much sewing, just the basics.

Hi all !!!!!

You guys have all been so busy !
Just back from torturing Lisa, Chris and the kids. What a cute crew ! Of courese, I have tons of shots of the kids, BUT I left my memory card and card rader at Lisa's, ( airhead that I am) so can't show you any of them. Hopefully, I 'll remember to bring it back with me tomorrow. Tomorrow, I'm teaching the kids to play flag football. We all have co-ordinating football shirts so we will look like a team. By the time I leave here, all three kids should have some interesting new "outlooks" . I have manhandled the boys to withing an inch of their lives, tho.... I do play rough.

The Alaska Zoo was the schedule for today. Wonderful, wonderful place.

The scenery here is powerful and stunning ! I just can't describe how magnificent. And if I can get my camera off the kids I hope to have something worthwhile to show.I am just NOT a landscape photographer !

Off to bed now.. have a great day/night ( i still am not sure what time it really is anymore) ...

Guess she should bring her laptop and spend a minute copying huh!

She did leave out that the weather is cooperating and the rain we've had has been at night and that Friday, we yakked so much it was nearly midnight before I took her back to her room! The daylight at 11PM is really throwing her a curve! And last night at 10 the sun was still above the horizon and bright orange and yellows stripes. Wished I had the camera in hand at that moment! We will be working on her landscape photo's soon!

Well, off to pay bills so that I can go pick her up for lunch!

I know, I'm just silly. what can i say? Is Crazy Chicks every other week? or was it cancelled last week because of Adobe?

I'm loving all your new avi's. I should work on a new one. Maybe Rene could give me some tips, cuz she seems to change hers regularly ;) (which I think is cool, btw)

Hahahaha, Heather!!! I'm so glad somebody else feels the way I do. I'm always so happy to see a school year end, but even happier when a new school year starts!:rofl::rofl:

That's why they call it Crazy Chicks Michelle, cuz we're all crazy girls. lol

I just get bored with my avi's, so I change them. I've discovered a setting on my Portraiture filter, and I've been running lots of photos through it, just to see what it looks like. That's what I did to the photo from my avi (and layered it a few times). I even ran some doggie photos through it to see what effects I can get. Pretty cool setting called "High Key" effect. It makes it look really dramatic, and I've been playing around with it with color and B/W photos.

babysat for the kidlets tonight so Lisa and Chris could have "date night". ..... then came back to do battle with my computer ! Seems a group of people came in and were using the hostel internet passwork while out and about, so the manager changed the password. Now, it it quite inconveneint not to have internet when wanting to check in with others !!1 ( family/friends etc.)

Glad to see that all had a great time with their various adventures. Maybe next year will be an Adobe ,, if there is one that is.
tomorrow we are taking the train to Seward- glaciers bald eagles etc..Off to bed shortly.

ugh! Chris, i was making some changes to the halle layout like you suggested, and pse quit working right in the middle of it. So frustrating. I wish i could figure out what is wrong with this goofy computer. It's still having problems with the "not responding" when i'm on the internet and in pse. No suggestions anyone can think of for fixing it work. It wasn't the usb cords the computer dude suggested. I've decided it's haunted. It's the only explanation i can come up with. Lol

OK, that one I can live with! But if you share yesterdays, you're in for it!!!!!!!!!

hmmmmmmmmmmmm when I think of the amount of "blackmail" shots you have of ME versus the ONE I have of you.... makes me totally rethink how "smart" it would be to put that one little itty bitty picture of you sliding down the slide .. and what one you would hit me back with. The percentages of choice are defintely on your side.

Crys, LOVE the new avi. Very cute!

Thanks, Rene. I so seldom like pictures of myself, and when I run across one that I do like, I must pounce!! :D

I must have the same haunt! or VOO DOO or whaever! :( :( :( Those things happen to me all the time. I do not think Vista and PSCS3 like each other very much! ;)

Last night, in particular, I had been working on a LO for about 5 hours!  Suddenly, when trying to click on one of the layers, I got that message about the integer having to have a certain value...blah...blah...blah..

It would NOT allow me to click OK. I could click NOTHING! I could NOT put an integer anywhere! Finally had to resort to Task Manager and when I tried shutting down, I got a message saying CS3 was waiting for my response. So, I went back and tried to give it a response. Suddenly, that computer became my DH on one of his most frustrating days. "I'm going to ask you a question, but there's no way on God's green earth that I'm going to hear or accept your answer!" :help: :help: :help: (Am I the only one with a DH who plays this game? :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:)

Finally, I just had to *pull the plug*. Must have been my hooties' way of telling me the layout was stinky! :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

Chris, sounds like you had such an awesome time at the Adobe crop. You sure were missed here!

Suvgal, you've got my kind of luck with unavailable cameras and great shots. After the SLC crop last Jan., I laid over in Phoenix on my way home, which then gave me the opportunity of flying over the Grand Canyon. I had left SLC with a dead camera battery!

When my boys were in school, I was always so glad for the new year to begin, too. But...because that meant the boys would come home from spending the summer with their dad! :D :D

Hmmmmm....can't imagine what of those lovely photo's I have taken could possibly be called a "blackmail" photo! You could not possibly mean one like this:

TeeHee! (I do have worse BTW!)

And I was going to say I loved your new avi too Crys! Great photo of you and teh baby!

Well, we have decided to take a day off and do the train later in the week. The kids have just reached the end of company and traveling and yesterday's venture was hard on us all. So Carolyn is off on her own adventures while the kids and I get a much needed "normal" day in. I have done some of the horrible "h" word and the kids are just playing happily. We will be off again in a couple days.

We arrived back in Anchorage super early this morning. I slept for most of the morning/afternoon due to the pure jetlag and also the antihistamine I took last night. We just got back from taking Macintosh for a walk at Campbell Lake Park and had a wonderful time. We actually came across a mama moose and her two calves. The mama was behind the barbed wire fence munching on some grass and as we were watching her, out popped her two babies from our side of the trail. They walked across the bike path and started munching on grass. They got very curious about Macintosh and eventually came over to check him out. Luckily he didn't bark! Both moose actually touched noses with Mac too! It was so amazing! I wanted to reach out and just pet them, but I knew that could potentially spook them and set mama off to charge so I didn't. All I could think about was how amazing this was and kicking myself for not having my camera!

If you haven't ever been to Alaska, I highly recommend it. Hey Chris, maybe you can talk the rest of the DSP team into an Alaskan crop? :) Just think of the amazing photos everyone would get!

Now I am hoping to stay awake for the meteor shower planned for tonight. Hope everyone had a wonderful day!

I'd love to visit Alaska, but it sure is a long way from me. Too bad you didn't have your camera with you! I would think a mama moose would be an awesome but scary sight up close and personal. I thought about the meteor shower last night, but couldn't stay awake. It was cloudy here so I doubt I would have seen it.

My husband and I had a trip to Alaska planned two years ago but had to cancel because of a family emergency. ( Sorry my computor was threatning to shut down and install some updates). Now to go on with my story. We just never made any plans after that. We are retired and planned on driving from Ohio. We have a 35ft fithwheel but bought a small pick-up camper to use for the trip. We were going to ferry either up or down (decsion to be made when we got there.) I was sooo looking forward to the trip and hope to do it next year. By the way the pick-up camper has not been used.

Lisa and Carolyn you better get some landscape photos posted because I plan on using them to get my husband motivated again. Carolyn you have dragged us into this trip with you so you have a responsibility to quit goofing around with Lisa and family and get some serious work done. (meaning photos, of course).:lol::lol: Anxious to hear what mishief you all get into next. Glad you are having fun!:love3:

Linda, get that guy in gear and head out! (And pick me up on the way, 'cause that's the only plan by which I would ever get there! :()
