Oh, Rene! Where are you?

Chris, work? Blech!

Linda, get that guy in gear and head out! (And pick me up on the way, 'cause that's the only plan by which I would ever get there! :()

Pick me up too! I wanna play!

I know- I will just leave hubby at home and stop and pick all of you up. Alaska would never be the same again. And if N.C. Isn't on the way we will just plan a route that it is. LOL! Get your bags packed, gals!

I want in on the Alaska trip. :) I know I could talk dh into going if it involves hunting! I'd just come back with lots of pics of a dead animal. :annoyed: Maybe that's why we haven't been yet.

Oh Rene, how did the vet go????

I wanted to go take some new pics of the kids this morning, but I think we will have to do it tomorrow. Too much stuff (nothing worth while like scrapping) going on today. Hope you all have a great day and LISA and CAROLYN, you are having too much fun!! Oh wait, you can NEVER have too much fun!!

My husband and I had a trip to Alaska planned two years ago but had to cancel because of a family emergency. ( Sorry my computor was threatning to shut down and install some updates). Now to go on with my story. We just never made any plans after that. We are retired and planned on driving from Ohio. We have a 35ft fithwheel but bought a small pick-up camper to use for the trip. We were going to ferry either up or down (decsion to be made when we got there.) I was sooo looking forward to the trip and hope to do it next year. By the way the pick-up camper has not been used.

Linda - don't just plan the ferry "when you get there"! Reservations are a must as there are very few that have room for both people and a vehicle. When they canceled ours they said they "might get us on the one on Saturday" but only us, no way to get the vehicle on. Well, that being 4 days further on the trip and having to get the car to Alaska too that wasn't going to happen! You absolutely have to have reservations and best if at least 3 months prior to the season beginning (in May). Oh, that means make reservations for any summer ferry travel by February to March (March to early April did work for us, but barely).

But do bring everybody and I will make sure you see some of the sights. We are even learning the ones not worth going to any more with Carolyn's visit.

And for those with husbands that want to fish, they can do that right here in Anchorage. No need to go to any "wilderness" to find that!

Here I am!!!!! I've just been super busy the last couple of days with bookkeeping, laundry, housecleaning, etc.

The vet said all of Doxie's bloodwork is still not normal, but it's "more normal than it was" so he's not as concerned any more. I take her in first thing in the morning for him to get a morning urine sample to run some endocrinology tests on and see if he finds anything there. If not, we just wait and see. So, yay for no hepatitis or liver cancer! :yippee::yippee:

I want to go to Alaska too!!! And I would love to see a moose!! Those would have been some awesome photos, huh?

Moose are much more majestic than most people realize. I don't think I will ever see the photo that really shows just how big even a female moose is. I may have shots of the full size male that was at the zoo, but haven't downloaded photo's yet, so here is Carolyn's just so you can dream of meeting one yourselves.

BTW - I'm a little jealous, Kristie, as the kids still have not seen one in the wild!

Where has everybody gone? I am going to have to miss the chat tonight, there is a pool party tonight the girls are going to, so I get to go watch. I'm totally bummed!!
I went to take pics of my kiddos today and only used......... the manual setting! :yahoo: :yahoo: I am so proud of myself, I think I'm understanding it. Then I came home and used a bunch of Robyn's actions on them and they look fantastic!! You don't even know how excited I am.
I have a question though. I was using my PS and was using the brush, did something else, came back to the brush and now it's just the pin dot. It won't go big. What did I do?
Hope you are all busy having fun!!

Can someone explain to me why it is so hard to say the word "no"? Such a simple little word, why can't I use it? It takes so much more energy to say "yes, I can help you with that". So tomorrow I am going to the middle school to help out with orientation thingy, when I should be home altering these band uniforms, which still aren't done. Or I could be in the shop working because I have a load of work coming next week. OR maybe I might have time to do some scrapping!! Ugh! Okay sorry about that, I just had to vent. :p I'm all better now

So I got both my laptop and dh's desktop back yesterday and today. But everyone said it was just a coincidence and so I went for it. Yay guess what?! It worked! I now have THREE computers in my office/cave. Yes I am such a geek. LOL

Hi everyone. I'm having DSP/Gundi thread withdrawals from not being around much this week. I spent the afternoon with DS and my DMIL. Drew had a job interview and had lost his truck keys, so I told him since I was going to be at my MIL's house which was a block from his interview, that I could take him, but he would have to go with me to my MIL's house, so he did that, then he had to go take a drug test for the job (so I'm thinking that's a good sign that he might have the job since I figure they wouldn't pay for a drug test if they weren't thinking about hiring him). So at my MIL's house she gave me 2 boxes and 2 sacks full of old family photos of Gary when he was growing up. I may have told you that I'm making him a childhood scrap album for a surprise for Christmas. Then I told Drew we would go to his apartment and I was sure I could find his keys. He was skeptical since he says he's "turned the apartment upside down". I walked in and found them in the first minute I was there. Then Gary said he wanted to go to the driving range and hit some balls, so I grabbed my camera and Drew said he wanted to go, so we went out to the driving range. Gary showed Drew how to hit some balls and I took photos. It was a really great evening. Sorry I missed the chat Chris, but I had such a great evening with my guys. Times like that are few and far between with all the issues with Drew, so I have to take them when I can get them.

Michelle, I don't have a problem saying no any more. I used to when I was younger. I mostly only have a problem saying it to my kids and hubby now, but I think maybe that's normal.

Heather, I saw those photos on FB, they looked AWESOME! What action did you run on that one of your son my the brick wall? I wish I could run actions in PSE6, and then I would get Robyn's actions, but I can't I don't think.

Doxie's urine test was normal today, so the vet says although he's not upset she's better, he is frustrated to not know what was going on with her. But YAY NO CANCER!!! So we just watch her to make sure her excessive drinking levels out a bit and she doesn't start having other issues. With no children at home full time, my dogs have become my children, so I'm not ready for anything to be wrong with her.

Sorry I'm so longwinded, just trying to catch up. :D

Wow, one day away and I had a half hours reading. Carolyn is still off on her adventure. Seems she actually made it into Denali park and is now headed south with the gang from the hostel where she is staying.

Sorry I missed the chat, sounds like it was a good one, but I'm afraid I slept through it. I had one of my bad nights that led to a very bad day yesterday with one of my all day headaches. So as soon as DH was through the door, I was out!

Rene - glad Doxie is well and what good news about Drew! Hope it all goes well.

It was fun! Glad you were there. You were a winner too, right?

Yup! But not because I was smart or fast.... LOL! Totally random.
You ladies are really fast at that game. Some moments I just sat there laughing (out loud, too!), it was a blast!

Back to being a zero .....

"Understand Exposure Revised Version" by Bryan Peterson.

One of my biggest problems is my age. To mess with settings on my camera, I must wear my reading glasses to see. However, when actually taking a shot, I have to take my glasses off to read the line of info in the viewfinder. Off...on...off...on - gets rather obnoxious! :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:

You know, when I first got my camera, I really did try to read the manual, front to back. But, it's so *dry* and referencing here there, back and forth and everywhere. That manual, side by side with the photography book is making a lot more sense. :D

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for my sweet fur baby.

GOOD NEWS ALERT!!!!!!!!!!! TRY NOT TO FAINT!!!!
DREW GOT THE JOB!!!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

He starts on Monday! He's also moving in with a friend of his in the same apartment complex, so his rent will be $150 less a month, and he's always really opposed to imposing upon his friends, so I'm hoping that will make him keep this job so he can pay his friend rent. I can talk about tough love all day long till the cows come home, it's just a lot easier said than done. Too many emotions involved. What is it with these boys?

On a side note, he must have finally realized I was serious because even though his electricity had been turned off a week and 1/2 ago, I didn't find out about it until yesterday when I went to his apartment to find his keys. So, yay, he didn't ask me to pay it to get it turned back on, and has been sleeping in the apartment with no electricity and it's 95 to over 100 degrees here every day.

It amazes me how a good day can turn so sour so fast. I went from being excited that Drew got a job to feeling almost as bad as I can feel as a mom. I don't really want to go into here on the internet, but suffice it to say things are not good. For the last 3 hours I have been dealing with stuff with this child again. Thanks guys. You don't know what your support means to me. Funny how you can feel close to and support from people you've never met, huh? I'm up after no sleep all night. I wish I lived close to the Starbucks. I'm leaving here in about 20 minutes to go take care of this stuff to the best of my ability. You know, when you're holding your chubby, happy, smiling 6 month old baby boy in your arms who thinks you are the greatest person in the world, you never really see that one day you may be where we all right now. Gary had about the worst week at work that he's had in years this week, and then on his way home last night at 8:00 I had to tell him Drew's news. So instead of going on date night like we had planned, we were dealing with serious Drew stuff. He had 2 computers crash (thank goodness he had them all backed up) and both of our mail inserter machines crashed, and they worked furiously to get them fixed to get all the jobs out yesterday that had to go out, so he was about at the end of his rope when I dropped a bombshell on him. But like Gary said last night, I guess the Lord does not give you more than you can handle. I'm just wondering what the lesson is in all of this.

OK, I'll quit blubbering now. Sorry, just needed to vent before embarking on today's fun. :D

Chris, we need another poll to vote on so we can all argue and disagree in good fun. :D

Only today and tomorrow here in Alaska .. My flight out is Sunday 11:45 PM. There is stil so much to see and so little time. The weather the past few days have not been the best. Went on a boat tour of the Kenai Peninsula.. rough seas, gray cloudy skies, rain... the boat pitching...IT WAS A BLAST ! While not the best conditions for using a camera, I did manage to get a shot of a humpbaack whale's tail. Will need to do some editing on THAT one ! Makes me wish I had an 800mm lens! Puffins are very cute little birds and they are so funny to watch fly. Saw some killer whales (0rca). Shooting with a camera wrapped in a plastic bag to protect it from the rain while hanging onto the rails to prevent from falling overboard..................

Okay ladies. I had a day of fun in the sun...and I come back to you all with a word of advice. Do not listen to your inner child when it says taking part in the bouncy castle at the graduation party is a good idea. Especially if you're totally out of shape and a bigger person. I almost knocked the thing down first off...and secondly...I was winded after a few bounces! LOL It was FUN though! I kept going...I guess I got my exercise for the day! Then my best friend's son cooled me off by doing a cannonball into the pool while I was at the edge taking pictures. Thank GOSH it didn't hurt the camera...but I got a lot of precious pictures to scrap! My friend was laughing because I was a photographing fool! :)

Bounce house, clown, etc. At some point during the party my best friend convinced me that it would be FUN to get into the bounce house. Next thing you know, theh men are telling the kids to get OUT, and in come the rest of the adult women. We should have known SOMETHING was up....... all of a sudden, the bounce house was deflating!!! And no, not because we have big butts either!! The *MEN* turned off the air to the bounce house!!! Next thing ya know, we are all at the bottom in a pile with the bounce house all over the top of us. I want to thank you all for your sweet words, concern and prayers. Today brought no relief from the stress. Nothing was resolved today since it is the weekend. Will work on it again Monday. I have never been good at "hurry up and wait". It's not in me to not try to get things done and taken care of as soon as possible. It will be a long drawn out process. I will share more about it with you guys when I can get through typing it without tears. I tried to lay down and take a nap this afternoon, but have never been a nap person, so that didn't happen. Sat around a cried for a long time, then decided that had to stop, so I drained the hot tub and cleaned it. :D Nothing like a little work to take your mind off things for a bit.

Good Morning all, hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Lisa, thanks again for dinner last night! You are such a sweetheart. I really had a lot of fun and wished I could have gotten to spend more time with you and Carolyn. I think Dan was a bit disappointed that I didn't bring him anything back because he went to McDonald's after I got home!

Carolyn, it was great meeting you and thanks so much for all the suggestions and help last night. I was telling Dan about it when I got home and he actually thought we had a laptop at the dinner table! Silly boy. I did try that merge stamp technique after I got home and I guess I didn't do something right because it didn't work for some reason. I'll try it again today.

We still have the foster puppies and will probably have them for the rest of the week. They go to get "altered" on Tuesday. I still think they are too young (9 weeks old), but that is the organization's policy so not much we can do about it. The black one is finally starting to come around some and play a bit more. He actually barked yesterday for the first time too!

Today I want to take Mac to University Lake for a bit if we can. We can't stay out long since we have the pups to watch over. Then I really should get some laundry done (yuck!).

Have a great day everyone....I'm so glad to be back at scrapping and chatting!

I'm doing my laundry as I type! And since I didn't want to do it while Carolyn was here I have nearly 2 weeks worth. I agree that 9 weeks seems awful young to be fixed, seems like it would be hard to find a vet that will do it that soon.

Rene - glad you are feeling a bit better. I sure hope things start looking up. Does Drew start the new job this week? (or is that a bad question)

ReneT
08-17-2009, 12:51 PM
Happy Monday everyone!

Drew starts his job today. :yahoo: He's been here at the house ever since the events that occurred Friday night. To make a LONG LONG story short, Drew got into some trouble with the police 2 years ago when he was 17. Several things happened over one weekend when Gary and I were out of town and we thought he was supervised. Anyway if was all mediated, Drew took care of it all, and he was never charged with anything. Well, that same weekend he happened to be driving a car when a friend of his did some serious damage to a girl's house. Drew, nor 2 other girls who were in the car did not know what the guy intended to do, nor did they know what happened afterward. They all basically thought they were involved in a funny prank. Well, it turned out to not be so funny because the girl's house almost burned down during the night. Anyway the guy who did it has long since gone to prison and we never heard anything more about any of it. Apparently in TX, if you are driving a car during the commission of a felony, you can be charged with a felony too. So Friday night, just 11 days shy of being 2 years later, we found out Drew was indicted for that felony. They only had 2 years to file, and they did. We had no idea they were going to charge him, and only found out because someone had seen Drew's name in the paper. So it was a huge shock to all of us. So today, we got him an attorney, and he turned himself in, was booked and released and is now here at the house waiting to go to work. The attorney is hoping to get it dismissed if we agree to pay the damage on the house, since obviously the guy who did the damage will not pay it back because he's in prison. Not the best day in my life to watch my son get arrested, that's for sure. So now it's a waiting game to see what the attorney can do.

Rene - my heart sure goes out to you and to Drew! Will any of your insurance help with this or will it all be out of pocket! I can only imagine what that will cost! Well, think of the bright side - Drew is working! And maybe this shock will help him stay that way.:hug:

Um, yeah, I need to work on some of those LOs. Of course, I am really looking forward to seeing her photo's from Denali and Seward. She went off on her own for those and I have yet to see any of them.

I can also tell you that she really is good with that stuff! My head was totally swimming with all the photography advice she was giving Kristie (poohbear77) and I the other night. And that was just the tip of the iceberg for what she tried to impart while she was here! I could sit and listen for hours and "try" to get even a little of it to sink in. Some times I think I'm a hopeless case there, but she is just so patient and keeps on trying!

Hi guys. Thanks for all your hugs and prayers.

You are not even going to believe what happened this afternoon. After getting Drew home, I went to run some errands and then was over at my DMIL's house when I got a call from Gary saying he had been in a wreck! Gary was headed north on a street, when a guy in a small car headed south was driving way to fast, probably about 60 in a 35 and lost control of his car going around a curve, left his lane, went through the turn lane and hit Gary's pick-up in the front driver's side, then apparently bounced off there and slid around and hit the back driver's side. The airbags deployed in Gary's truck, causing him bruising and some type of burning on his lower arms, chest and stomach. The hair on his arms is burned. He's a bit stiff, but OK other than that. The guy and girl in the other car were ok too, although the girl did go in the ambulance beause she had a bloody nose and was pretty upset. The guys's hood was stuck under Gary's truck and tires! I'm surprised the girl and guy in the car weren't hurt. I got there pretty fast because I was only a few blocks away. One lady I talked to said she had never seen anything so bad before. The guy apparently liked driving fast because he left turbo boosters and other racing paraphenalia all over the street. He got a ticket.

Are you even believing this? It's just nuts. I don't want to play any more. So glad that Gary is OK though, it could have been so much worse.

Gary and I are supposed to leave for a short trip to Florida on Monday the 24th, but I hear they are having hurricanes there. Not sure we should leave the house!

Today is a new day, and I don't have anything pressing to do - no laundry, no errands, etc, so I'm planning on scrapping today. Yay!

Gary's not too sore. His stomach is somewhat sore, but not bad he says. Thank goodness.

I do not know if it is the right decision or not, but we've decided the best thing for now is to move Drew back home so that we can monitor him through this legal process and also so that he can begin to pay us back for these legal fees and other fees that are incurring. So, big changes ahead for me and Gary who are used to no kids at home except every other weekend when Emily is here.

Man Rene, I can't believe all the crappy things that have been have been happening! I hope it all works out with Drew and that just SUCKS, why the heck do they have to wait til the LAST minute. You go on thinking it's all taken care of and then that. SO glad Gary is ok! Wrecks or my worst fear, I don't want to be in one and if I am I hope my kids aren't in the car.

I actually have a lottery ticket. The prize is $106 million. I think I should win, don't you?:rofl::rofl: If I do, I'm sending all you guys a big check for your support! :yippee:
So glad I have you as a friend!

Rene, I keep forgetting to ask you how far you are from Houston? My sister lives there and I will be going to see her at some point! I'm sure you are really far, but just want to know. :)

Chris so glad you are home and good luck catching up. It take me about 2 weeks, seriously!

I was at my siters all day yesterday and it was so great to get out of the house. We had a fun day just relaxing and not thinking about kids because they all just play together and NO fighting. :yahoo: :yahoo:

I don't learn the photography stuff, Doug does. I don't see any point in both of us knowing it. I just ask him. "I want to take a photo of so and so. What lens do I want and what settings do I want?" He is VERY good at that stuff. I tried to teach him some stuff about photoshop, but he thinks that since I already know it, he does not need to. If one of us dies, the other one will be dead in the water.

      You certainly make an ideal pair while you're still alive, though!!

Rene, your luck just has to turn, one of these days.     So glad that Gary is reasonable OK!

Heather, Rene's only about 18 hours from me (according to MapQuest), so come on over! No kids; no fighting; no stress! And the garden is producing copious quantities of everything right now! :D

HALLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! Back and alive ! And well rested ! Hit the hay by 8 pm after cleaning up the bathroom before setting my royal buns on the throne... House was more or less in one piece...still needing to get the rest of Robin's stuff stored.. UGH !

Didn't even spend a spare minute going over photos.. Tim stopped by to see any and all mountain shots so he could make his selection for what he wants to hang in his living room. LOL! At least I'm first choice for photography images ! haha.

Well, back to work. Why I decided to go to work the day after returning, I'll never know. I must've been doing mimosas when I made THAT decision !

Hugs for Rene, haven't caught all up to see if we know what is wrong but wanted to put down some thoughts before old age sets in and I forget everything I have read so far. :)

Poll should be up later today, so watch for it. ;) (I claim no responsibility for any poll related shenanigans. LOL )

Those bounce house stories made me LAUGH! I am sitting here with very sore back and shoulder muscles from riding on our Airhead(flat, inflatable disc to drag behind the boat,) with Joshua! You should have seen him, five years old and NO FEAR! At one point, he went flying off on a whip and comes up laughing, "I skied on my back, Mommy!" What a character! When I was on with him, dh was trying to catch up with my dad's boat, so we were going FAST, minor turning, but it was ROUGH, so bounce, bounce, bounce, with us on our stomachs, propped up with our elbows. Can anyone see why I have sore muscles? :D

I couldn't believe how cold it was! Normally I pack extra warmer clothes, "just in case." and we never use them, so this year I said dang it, I am just doing the minimum. Yep, it was freezing. like 60s and low 70s. We didn't do as much in the water as normal, even though I had THREE swim suits. :D But we had a great time playing Bocci ball. Very fun!

So am I anyone's BFF or do I have to sit in the corner?

Welcome back Carolyn!! I'm glad you had a fun trip. I can't wait to see those landscapes.

Welcome back to Chris too. How was the family reunion? Was this a big extended reunion or just close family?

I can't wait for New Moon either, but my DD probably will see it with her friends instead of me. DH won't want to see it, so I'll have to round up some of my own friends i guess.

At least you guys are sore from having fun. I have had a pain in my hip/back since Saturday from helping DH move the piano. We only went across the room with it, one wall to another. I think it's more of a nerve thing than a muscle thing, because sometimes the pain radiates down my leg. It really stinks to get old.

it is an extended family reunion, it is the descendants of my great grandparents, so there were over 150 people there. It was so much fun. We typically spend 4 days, most of that time with my dad and his siblings and families. Just our branch is almost 40 people and 2 of the siblings don't come because of distance. Then we have a huge pot luck picnic on Sunday afternoon with everyone. I have to tell you my kids were so impressed cuz I did front & back flips off the diving board. I even did a front flip with 1/2 a twist, but didn't rotate that one quite enough and landed on my shins. oooooowwwww!

Rene, so sorry to hear about all your troubles lately. I'm a bit behind, what happened to Gary? Glad he is okay.

Chris, glad your vacation went well. You really shouldn't complain about the weather though, we are in the midst of beginning fall already up here!

Carolyn, so glad you made it back home safe and sound. Next time, try and come like in June when the weather is much better! At least it was this year, you never can tell from year to year up here. I can't wait to hear about your experience with Bryan Peterson in October. That sounds fantastic and now I am going to go try and find his book.

Now, to finally do a bit of bragging (which I rarely do, and very rarely get to do on this site it seems like). My latest layout "Do you know the way to San Jose" was chosen as layout of the day today! I was in utter shock when Dan told me as he heard about it first through Facebook. Ironically, I was gunning for the one I am working on right now, that I was inspired at midnight with the idea, to be more of a LOTD type layout. The background I came up with I think is pretty cool.

Well even though I have a quiet day today (foster puppies are at the vet getting their snip snip done and Mac is at doggie daycare for a bit) and I have the time to get "real" stuff done like housework and phone calls, I think I'll scrap instead! I've decided that this week I am living up to the saying "the sign of a lazy scrapper is a clean house".

Oh hey Chris, where did you get the LDS scrapper button that is on your flair card? That's cool.

Last time I innertubed behind a boat Drew was 2 years old, and one of the guys in my family was driving the boat and trying to get me to fall off, so I hung on so tight because I was so scared of falling off at that speed, so the next day I was soooo sore.

Have a great day everyone....I'm so glad to be back at scrapping and chatting!
highlight all the layers you want to merge.
HOLD DOWN THE ALT KEY and with your mouse left click on the LAYERS tab at the top of the work space. The letter L should be underlined. DO NOT LET UP ON THE MOUSE ! HOLD THAT LEFT CLICK AND DRAG THE CURSOR DOWN to where it says MERGE LAYERS. The trick is to NOT let go of that left mouse click. Only let up when you get to MERGE LAYERS.

Only history will tell you if it's the right decision or not. unfortunately, we don't have a crystal ball to be able to see the future. we make the best decisions we can with available information, under the circumstances you find yourself in and then work from there. Only time will tell you if it's the best or not... but IT'S THE BEST YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW !!!!! So now that your d ecision is made, do the best you all can. prayers and hugs !

Dr. Phil says the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, so if that's true, it's not looking good. But like you said, we're doing the only thing we know to do right now, all the while feeling in our gut it's not going to work. Gary and I were talking about it earlier and he said "I'm doing everything I know to do to keep his future from being ruined over something he did when he was 17, but he's fighting me all the way." Again taken about an hour before actual sunset. these were some random weeds ( I think... I know they were not fireweed) at the back of the parking lot at my Denali hotel. This was my first attempt at a backlit scene and i was pretty pleased with the result.

highlight all the layers you want to merge.
Only let up when you get to MERGE LAYERS.

ok I am not sure what you are doing, but if you are just merging your layers or making a copy of merging your layers, you can do ctrl+E after you have them all selected that you want, or ctrl+alt+E, to make a merged copy, which will leave you with one merged copy and then the separate layers still too. If this has nothing to do with what you are are doing feel free to ignore. LOL

I've done weird stuff like that before.. broke my toe getting off the couch after falling asleep...so really nothing i do can surprise him.

I had a co-worker once who broke her back getting out of bed. At least a broken toe can be explained by accidentally kicking something. All she did was sit up.

She is using a Photobucket account. You size your photo, upload to photobucket and snag (Ctrl-C) the IMG line that shows up when you point your mouse. Then, just Ctrl-V into your post. She's also hitting the IMG tag in the advanced post, but you don't need to do that. I forget and do the same thing, then you get those little IMG notes on either side.

WONDER LAKE- a lake too young and arctic to support much life yet. The water is so clear, you can see the rocky bottom as far as you can see! Only a few trout live in select locations as of this time...not yet enough underwater weeds, plant life etc to support other life forms... but it is a magnificent lake.

MAMA GRIZZLY AND CUB - turning the next bend in the road (after the fox) we came upon this mama grizzly and her cub. According to our forest ranger guide, this may be a spring cub- born in the den during January or February. His/her larger size is probably due to the fact it was a single cub so had singular access to all food . They were just meandering along the road.

WOLF- We saw this wolf hunting extremely close to the road. As it turns out, wolf sightings are fairly rare ! And this one actually caught a ground squirrel for "lunch".

Denali is a rare park in that it has a fully functioning eco-system: meaning there is a definite relationship predator/prey. Man DOES NOT interfere with nature's order. To survive, you must hunt. 6 millon acres of wldlife preserve , the only access road is 90 miles long. and tourists can only take their personal vehicles no further than 10 miles. paved road ends at mile 14 and the rest is a narrow gravel road. There are tourist rest stops along the route but they are about 90 minutes apart. In this park, the wildlife is king and man is only visiting.

yes, it was a seminar in NYC... no actual camera work. Many of us had our cameras and during lunch we were free to ask him specific questions. So in a sense, he did work individually with some of us. The seminar had over 50 students, so it was not possible for him to work very much one on one.

the October venue is an actual 4 1/2 day workshop.. working in the field, with all manner of equipment AND Bryan, one on one. It's a small class of 8 students so there is ample time for him to work side by side with each student in the field. During the non shooting times, he reviews the images, critiques each one and goes over post production techniques to ready the images for professional printing should we so desire.

We will be doing a great deal of "seeing creatively" not only with our eyes, but with the vision of the different lenses. As well as using filters, extension tubes etc for close up work.

And you thought my pack was stuffed.. i left half of it home !

Ohhh neato photos they are!

Speaking of photos.... today is my last day of taking "back to school" photos of my daughter. I really never thought I would be like this, but yep the day has come, it's only 4am and I'm up, and in tears. She's just a baby, to me. She's only 16 and a senior in high school, officially today. If I'm a mess today, can you even imagine how I will be in 9 months on graduation day? Oh my! It probably doesn't help that my son starts at the junior high school this year (7th grade). He's the baby of the two and it just reminds me that they are quickly growing up. I loving watching them grow and spread their wings, but I guess I'm just not ready for either of them to fly away to a dorm room anytime soon........

Yep Rene, she sure did. I know it was best to do it, she was way ahead of her peers at the time and she's very mature and fairly tall.. so she blends right in with the other seniors. She's been with this group for several years now and they call her the "baby", they are very good to her and watch over her. While I know it was best for her academically, I can be honest this morning and say that I am absolutely regretting having allowed it.... because I literally gave away time with my DD :-( Of course, that is the selfish side of me talking. She just left for school, I took pics of her leaving in her car and stuff and it must have shown on my face because she looked at me and quietly hugged me and said "mommy, don't cry"... and then, of course, I lost it. I just didn't know I'd actually cry on this day.. I never cry when they leave on their first day of school. I'm always really happy for them and make it a really exciting morning.... Im such a huge baby. sigh

But the upside is, I *think* I may have some decent pics to scrap with today! LOL! I was having trouble early this morning deciding what to use for Woodsy's Oodles of Fun challenge, and well her photos I just took this morning match the kit........ see, there is a positive to all this!

Good for her though, being mature and also being so sweet when she realized you were having a hard time. I'm guessing next year this time may be another hard time for you, sending a 17 year old off to college, but it sounds to me like she can handle it and she has a good support system of friends.

So I can see why you are crying, I about started crying reading this!!

Hugs from me too! My baby start kindergarten next week. Oh and that reminds me the other night it was my turn to say family prayers and afterward he says "mommy you forgot to bless me that I wouldn't be nervous to start school next week. " so I asked him if he was nervous and he said, "no but just in case." Isnt that the cutest thing?!

Oh too cute! Don't you love family prayers!! They say the cutest things.

Christine, the family prayer with your DS reminds me of the time my son was really sick with the flu, he was about 4 or so. It was Thanksgiving dinner with all of my family. My oldest brother said prayer and then my DS piped in during prayer and said "Uncle G, don't forget to pray for my butt!" ... oh my gosh, we all died laughing. He wanted Uncle G to pray that the flu bug would go away... he just had a funnier way of putting it! LOLOL!

Good grief! What a chattery bunch today! I may never catch up. I might not read now, don't need to be crying yet today. Laura, I can see why you'd be crying. It's a big enough step being a senior, but at 16 it must be even harder. My DD is 16 too and starting her junior year next week. This summer she has stepped over some magic line and become so grown up. She is driving, has a job and a boyfriend and always on the go. She has always been very independent but even more so now.

Chris, such a cute story about your boy asking for his blessing.

I will read more that I missed and check out Carolyns pictures. I know you "said" you weren't a landscaped photographer, but I beg to differ!

ONG I am WAY TOO OLD to be looking at 20 something monkeys !
Any 50 somehing monkeys around??? LOL

Dr. Phil says the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, so if that's true, it's not looking good. But like you said, we're doing the only thing we know to do right now, all the while feeling in our gut it's not going to work. Gary and I were talking about it earlier and he said "I'm doing everything I know to do to keep his future from being ruined over something he did when he was 17, but he's fighting me all the way." That about says it all. So we keep on keeping on, and keep praying.

After a wonderful dinner, dessert and (in my case, cocktails)...here is Lisa and Kristie

1-I am closer to 50, but refuse to stop looking at the 20's!:rofl::rofl:
2-Rene, ya gotta go with your gut sometimes. I'm praying it will work out.
3-Lisa and Kristie!! you two are just adorable!!! Fantastic shot, Carolyn!

Man, your D300 can do wonders! Now, can you airbrush out the crows feet under my eyes? Man, I am not aging as well as my mom (no I am not fishing for compliments).

I do want a copy though Carolyn, it's a really great picture.

What are you taliking about?! Kristie, you are gorgeous!!

So far i have only been with Bryan via his books... I get to work with him in person in october. i wish I had been able to do it before alaska so my shots would have been somewhat better. But when i had time, I did try to remember everything i had read and put it into practice. i have 3 of his books- UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE, LEARNING TO SEE CREATIVELY and UNDERSTANDING CLOSE UP PHOTOGRAPHY. I have read and re-read them several times...

I have Understanding Exposure. Learning to se Creatively sounds like something I could use!

Kristie - I'm not seeing the kind of link you need to be able to just drop it in here. And without that, the online size might be troublesome. Can you open a photo in Flikr so that is the only thing (including no text or title) you see? If so, I could give you a work around.

I've done it with Flickr before. I think you need to open the picture in Flickr, right click, choose properties and highlight the "address" of the picture. Then insert the image here.

Why is my mask not working in CS4? I've done tons of masks on things before to cover part of it up! I am working on a LO and have used masks in it and then I went to do another and it won't work. Shut down the program, came back and nothing. :( Did I hit something? Why would they just quit working? Any ideas?

OK, obviously I haven't used them enough! I must have changed my opacity, without knowing it, and then it didn't work!

And why is my photos number climbing? I don't have 224 photos and this morning it was 222 and I have uploaded nothing?! Are any of yours off?

I know what you mean. My youngest stepdaughter is about to start her junior year too, and she's been driving since January. It's so strange that she drives herself out to our house now instead of us picking her up, and if I take her to the movies or something, she just meets me there. It feels very weird when they are more independent.

I will read more that I missed and check out Carolyns pictures. I know you "said" you weren't a landscaped photographer, but I beg to differ!

I beg to differ too, Carolyn. Those photos are amazing! I'm envious of your talent.

Thanks, Lisa. It's a big change for us already, since he's now staying here at night even though his stuff is not all moved. We've had empty nest syndrome for 2 years now except when Emily's here, and I do have to say we love that. But I have decided to put him in the upstairs gameroom instead of a bedroom downstairs. That was Gary's idea, and I really think it's a good one, because although it may all be psychological, I'm thinking I will feel like I still have some of the privacy and alone time I've grown so used to in the past 2 years. Bless my sweet DH. I just think I have got to be one of the luckiest women. When Drew's dad has yet to even call to check on him, even though he knows what is going on, Gary is just always there to do what needs to be done. He's going Friday morning before he goes to work to Drew's apartment to help him move the big stuff with our work truck, he's trying to figure out how to get internet access upstairs in the gameroom. He's just an awesome stepdad. I hope Drew knows how lucky he is. I think lots of stepdads would have washed their hands of the ordeal by now.

I need to not be so hesitant to get on the ground etc. These pics are super!

I'm hesitant, for fear of not being able to get back up! :worried: :yikes:  :yikes: :worried: :help: :annoyed:

Awwwwwwww..........we know we do our best parenting by teaching them to live in this world; then when it's time, our hearts are broken!

Hugs from me too! My baby start kindergarten next week. That is the cutest thing! Be thankful on his first day that he does not have to be fearful that Rutker might touch his stuff while he's gone!       (Tristan's main concern when he started last week! ;))

OK, obviously I haven't used them enough! I must have changed my opacity, without knowing it, and then it didn't work!

Ever since the last upgrade our comments now get counted in the same pot as the photos. So every comment/post you make ups the number. (good thing I don't pay attention to that one much, it would probably shock the heck out of me to see that many "photos" listed )

Lex will start her senior year at 16 and then turn a few weeks later. She will hate not getting her driver's license until she is a junior.

Oh, bless his heart! How do you feel about him going to kindergarten? That will be a huge change for you during the day. Is it full day or half day?

half and I am going to miss him. The last 2 years he has been my "buddy" while the other kids are at school. Hopefully though I can use the time to get some designing done, since I am not having much success this month. Short day though today so maybe I will get a bit done.
