Sorry for the short notice! Hope you *manage* without me! :D

So, I thought to spare you the details, but since you asked...

We leave on Sat. for Sturgeon Bay, WI. Just us and the new boat. We go to the same spot almost every year. A little cottage right on the Bay, where we fish for northern pike. We're just one canal away from Lake Michigan, where we fish for salmon. We generally fish in the mornings and tour Door County in the afternoons. We love it there and I know you've seen some of my layouts from pictures I've taken there.

We return home on Wed. I work on Thurs. We leave for Jackson's and Alex's on Fri. Their Daddy and Mommy are going out of town for their 8th anniversary and we're babysitting! :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

On Sat. we're taking the boys to my Grean Aunt Helen's 100th birthday party! How fun will that be!!!      She's still an incredible lady!!!

I have a cousin and his wife who are coming from New Jersey for the party and staying a week or so. He and my DH are going fishing on Tues., so we won't be home till late that night.

The following weekend we go to KY for DH's son's Hog Roast on Sunday. We will be hosting a fish fry on Fri. Both my sons and all the grandkids should be there.

We return to KY the following weekend for a grandson's wedding.

We meet with both sons and their families the following weekend at an indoor water park/Holiday Inn to celebrate Tristan's 6th b'day, Rutker's 4th b'day and Jackson's 2nd b'day. (Tristan & Rutker were both born on the same day; Jackson was born the following day! :D)

Now, are you sorry you asked??

That sounds so wonderful. Gosh, I wish I had a big, connected family like that. I hope you have a wonderful, safe time.

Laura, I like the new Avi!

Crys, we'll miss you. It just won't be the same without you. But have fun! Are you going to see some grandbabies?

So this morning I had errands to do. I managed a couple, but I needed to head further away into a busier town and I just didn't want to do it. So I punted it and got a pedicure instead!! A friend gave me a GC to get a pedicure for my birthday (way back in May) and I just decided it was high time to use it.

oh yay! I love pedicures! and I agree wahoo for laura!

Sorry for the short notice! Hope you *manage* without me! :D

Well, he seems OK except he drinks tons of water and the upset tummy seems to be going away. I'm dreading it, but as soon as I'm done here I get to go poke him with an IV (doesn't go into the vein thank goodness, so not really IV, but that's what it looks like). Carolyn, I think you need a different kind of procedure for your droopers  Pretty flowers!! Sorry that the hurricane put a damper on your plans. We had a pool party to go to last night... and it rained... the whole night. There were probably close to 50 kids and they couldn't have cared less that it was raining. They had a blast. DD was one of the lifeguards on duty. She was less than thrilled about the rain, but she'll be happy enough about it when she gets her pay check because she gets time and a half for parties.

It causes issues with the calcium level in the blood and with longevity.....they won't know until they get inside whether or not it is malignant. The first doctor said my labwork was abnormal due to an undiagnosed malignancy, which increased my stress/anxiety level about 1000%. But then I talked to my neighbor, who is nationally recognized endocrine expert, and he said no, the tumor could be nonmalignant. *wiping sweat from brow*

So Gundi, for the first time in my life I am completely ambivalent about the undressing issue.........I NEVER thought I would hear myself say this, but nudity seems like such small potatoes when you are peeking over the edge of a 6 foot hole.

Chaos is the most adorable doggie. Way too cute . Makes me sad to think he's not feeling well.
He took his fluids very well last night. The only problem was him wanting to move around and get comfortable. I will have to check that we gave him enough later today. I needed time for them to absorb completely and since it has now been 12 hours, I can do it any time. Believe it or not, he was sick while you were here, we just could not get the ultrasound coordinated for that week. The office brings in a special vet for those and she was on vacation. This is a life long malady that he will have from now until.... The question we are trying to figure out is when that until will be. Our four legged children are just as precious as our two legged ones....and disregarding expense, we do the same for them as we would for others living in our home ! ( you are talking to someone who had a cast put on her guinea pig's broken leg !!!! ) It's just difficult to make a determination when continued treatment(s) only results in continued life with no regards to the QUALITY of that life ( re: pain, discomfort, inability to do normal activities etc) VS care to provide longevity with quality. Have been there several times over the years so know EXACTLY how you feel.

Ty everyone for the well wishes. I'm feeling a LOT better today...just totally wiped out. I guess it was my time, as I haven't gotten the flu in years. Hope it's a few years before I go through it again though! LOL

Fran, hopefully the tumor isn't malignant. I know how scary that can be, they found a tumor on the base of my brain. Thankfully it's only a prolactinoma. It makes me hairier than most, but no huge issues with it as long as it doesn't grow more.

I've been searching some botany sites and can't find anything that looks like them..or I'm looking in the wrong place. ( more probable ! haha)

I can't say for certain. If I can find my Wildflowers of Alaska, I will take a look. (I'm not the botanist in my clan, that was my Dad's job and seems my older sister is the only one to get that gene!)

Shana - very glad you are feeling better!

Dimetrodon

http://www.mantyweb.com/dinosaur/dinos/dimetrodon.gif

Name's meaning: "two shapes of tooth"

Pronounciation: die-MET-roe-don

Physical Description:
A full grown Dimetrodon measured about 6-11 feet long, and was around 3-4 feet tall. It weighed around 250 lbs. (weight estimates vary greatly for dinosaurs).
The Dimetrodon is considered a reptile and not a dinosaur, but because of it's age is often mistaken for a dinosaur. The Dimetrodon had an amazing semi-circle shaped sail on its back. The sail had many long bones in it that connected to it's spine. These long bones helped support the sail.
Dimetrodon had four short legs, that sprawled out from it's sides. It was probably a slow dinosaur because of it's sprawling legs.

Stegosaurus

http://www.mantyweb.com/dinosaur/dinos/stegosaurus.gif

Name's meaning: "roofed lizard"

Pronounciation: STEG-oh-sawr-us

Physical Description:
A full grown Stegosaurus measured about about 30 feet long, about 9 feet tall, and weighed about 4-6 tons (weight estimates vary greatly for dinosaurs).

It was about the size of an elephant. Stegosaurus had plates on it's back that were not attached to it's bones. Since it's plates were not attached to it's bones, we don't know which direction they pointed. It had four legs, and it's back legs were twice as long as it's front legs. It had spikes on it's tail, which it probably used as a weapon.

Young Earth Age:
Alive sometime in the last 6000 years.

Old Earth Age:
According to old earth scientists, Stegasaurus lived in the late Jurrasic Period, about 150 million years ago.

Diet:
It was a herbivore (plant eating dinosaur).

Fossil locations:
Stegosaurus fossils have been found all over the world including Utah, Wyoming, Colorado in the United States. Around the world they have been found in India, China, Europe, and Africa.

Classification:
Ornithischia

PQ - I think you are a wealth of information. All I could come up with was Stegosaurus. But then, my kids have not gotten "into" the dinosaurs the way some kids do. We do have one small book, but the few dinosaurs that they had were given to charity before the move, and that was their choice!

As your kids get older, this could become your most favorite site on the planet - ENCHANTED LEARNING -

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html

You can use it for free, but it only costs 20.00 a year to join, and when you join, you can get "printable pages." I always have joined because I want to support the site. It is GREAT for school reports and projects.

My second favorite site is COSMEO.

http://www.cosmeo.com/cosmeo.cfm

It is run by the discovery channel. Your child does not know how to do their math? (and neither do you......) Cosmeo has videos of EVERY math concept from grade 1-12. It actually has articles and videos on every school course, every grade. It has been SO worth my money. I would have probably committed suicide when we had to learn the life cycle of a star had it not been for cosmeo.

Here is a review:

Students! Finish your homework, improve your grades and have fun doing it! Parents! Put your mind at ease while your child safely explores fun educational websites with Cosmeo, winner of “TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award.”
Cosmeo has colorful, interactive software, and at only $9.95 per month or $99.00 per year, provides in–depth homework help for grades K–12 on math, science, English, social studies, and art.

I'm doing well today! My fight with the school district, along with other parents doing the same, has paid off (mostly, but not entirely YET... ). My daughters school is NOW getting a "new master schedule"! This means the kids will have their required classes AT the school and not online through colleges (which are full and have no openings left for our kids) which in turn means they will be able to graduate!! It also means that the couple classes they did have at the school, that had 63+ kids in each of them, will no longer be the case! These teenagers have been sitting on the FLOORS to do their classes because the capacity was too much for the 25 (approx) desks/chairs currently in each class.

Sooooo... today the new schedule will be put into the sytem, tomorrow kids will receive their new schedules.. and by Wednesday the kids will be ATTENDING their new classes, sitting in CHAIRS at DESKS.... and all the while knowing they NOW will for sure be able to graduate!

YAY!! I feel like a mean, annoying and over protective parent.. but it got the job done!

All too often, parents take a side seat when it comes to their children's education and that is just not how it should be! I just saw this elsewhere and had to share! Rene - for some reason I thought of you!

To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own,
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students...here is something to make you chuckle.

Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children.

After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve.

And the first thing he said was
' DON'T !'

'Don 't what ?'
Adam replied.

'Don't eat the forbidden fruit.'
God said.

'Forbidden fruit ?
We have forbidden fruit?
Hey Eve..we have forbidden fruit! '

' No Way !'
'Yes way! '

'Do NOT eat the fruit ! ' said God.

'Why ? '

'Because I am your Father and I said so!'
God replied, wondering why He hadn't stopped
creation after making the elephants.

A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked!
'Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?' God asked.

'Uh huh,' Adam replied.

'Then why did you?' said the Father.

'I don't know,' said Eve.

'She started it!' Adam said.

'Did not! '

'Did too! '

'DID NOT!'

Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it, don't be hard on yourself.

If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

1. You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.

2. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your own children.

3. Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young.

4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.

5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own

6. We childproofed our homes, but they are still getting in.

ADVICE FOR THE DAY:

Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home one day

AND FINALLY:

IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TENSION AND YOU GET A HEADACHE, DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE ASPIRIN BOTTLE:

'TAKE TWO ASPIRIN'..... AND 'KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN'!!!!!

Hey Beachcomber! I'm glad your son was excited about his teacher. Mine had a similar situation. Much Much better today. Thanks Michelle. Plus, on a SUPER DUPER high note, DH terminated an employee today that has been giving up both stress for years. He'd been given a warning back in December, but it only seemed to get worse instead of better, and Gary wasn't sleeping and hated to come to his own business, so it was time. So once we get through getting the new guy up to speed on everything, things will be so much better for both of us. YAY!!!! There is definitely something to be said for not hiring or working with your friends, because they won't stay your friends for very long (although this situation had been going on for years). So now that's done, it's time to move forward.

Drew is doing well in our house so far. Working well at his job. He turns 20 on Thursday. Of course I'm not old enough to have a 20 year old. :D

I had a flash of insanity one night and signed up for the DET contest. Not sure why I did that, probably due to the fact that it was somewhere between 12:30 and 1:30 in the morning. So now I'm a bit anxious about that, but not too bad. I'm just going to try to look at it as a learning and fun experience. Cross your fingers for me. If I could just make it past Round 1 I would feel like I accomplished something.

I'll try to liven it up around here!!:rofl:

We were so worried about him, he kept telling everyone he wasn't going and told me he wanted to be 4 so he could go to pre-school!

Hope you are all doing well and CHRIS you are in big trouble for bringing up DET! What was I thinking? WAY too many great scrappers, I guess I get 1 free kit!!

18 pounds of cat food? Wow! I'm guessing that took awhile!

I had already bought the DET kit, so I didn't even get a free one! But I do love it, so that makes it all good. I'm hoping to get started tonight.

Oh, both you guys are ready to try your hands at DET! I know you are! Just remember: scrap your hearts and enjoy the ride! I look forward to seeing your LOs!

I can relate to the youngest at home alone! Of course, mine isn't 15 months old and is a little better on her own, but it's still an adjustment when you are their source of entertainment. We were supposed to have a play date this morning, but the little girl came down with a cold and maybe a slight fever. Her Grandma and I decided it was better for her to get well. Hopefully, soon we will be able to pull this off. Poor DD has been dying to play with her.

Hi Lisa, Rene T, Michelle and everyone else!

Michelle--I'm glad school is going good for your son. It does make a difference.

Lisa--are you going on a job interview? What kind of job are you going for? Good luck with the interview. I haven't been on a job interview in 10 years. Yikes. I am going to try and stop in and visit with you all.

So the boys school told us that there is an outbreak of lice already. Ughhhhh...we had a family birthday party for the boys birthday on Sunday and his cousins were there. My BIL called me today to say his kids have lice. Great they were in our house now I have to worry about that. We have never had them and I don't want them. :(

Rene T--good luck with the DET contest. You will be fine. You can do it! :)

Oh, the thought crossed my mind! But I really don't like camping, so I'm trying to come up with some other "creative" way to use the kit. The papers look really cool.

I'm glad to hear you got the employee issue taken care of and Drew is doing well. But 20? You must have had him when you were 12!

Yech! Lice! I can't even think what you must be going through trying to make sure they are not in the house. I've never had lice, not even as a child. There was once when I was a kid that they were in the school and the school panicked and sent all these kids home saying they had it, and it turned out that only one or two were actually infected. The person checking didn't really know what they were looking for. I guess if you have it, it's pretty obvious.

No, I was a month away from being 24 when I had him. I always make my kids favorite dinner for their birthday, and luckily, he's off on his birthday, so we will have family dinner night that night. I'm about to go order him an ice cream cake, which is what he said he wanted. Thank goodness I don't really care for peanut butter chocolate ice cream, so I won't be tempted to eat it all!

I can eat PB and choc ice cream, but I don't LOVE it, so I think I'm safe. So when I went to Baskin Robbins to order the cake, they had my VERY FAVORITE flavor there, which they rarely have. I just wanted to order 3 scoops, but since I've gained 8 pounds due to the cruise, and the trip to Orlando, and just not being a good girl, I just asked for a sample of it and had one bite. I was proud of myself. But man, it was good! It's chocolate fudge flavor and it's so yummy!

Good luck with your LO Heather. I worked on mine yesterday evening until about 12:30 or so, then decided to step away from it and go to bed. I couldn't sleep (so what else is new?) so I got back up and made a change to it that I liked, then went back to bed at 4:30, still couldn't sleep because I was cold. It's a drop shadow problem. I have rotated an element a million different ways, flipped it etc, but can not get the drop shadow to come out right. When i have diffuculty with drop shadows... i put the element in question on a separate work space window and rotate it the way I want it. .. then I can enlarge the heck outta it and see better- makes erasing the original shadow easier. then I add my own shadow and place it on a separate layer. Once it's on its own layer, I can blur the shadow, change the opaacity , and generally mush it around anyway I want it. Then I just put both the layers onto the layout and fine tune any positioning etc from there. I don't know if this helps any...

There is nothing wrong with "simple". Often, the so thought "simple" layouts are far more powerful than the visually intircate ones. Your use of the kit is well done. Each piece you have chosen supports the focal photo.

I already saw yours in the New Layouts gallery today by accident. I think you did a great job. I like the blended photo. Mine has a blended photo too, but kinda different from yours. I am considering working on another layout today that I had an idea about to see if I like it better. I don't know.

I just got off work and after not sleeping ANY minutes last night, I'm kinda drained. Tomorrow I have to work in the morning, then go to the dentist (which will induce a full blown panic attack when they stick my gums with the needle), then go to the grocery store and cook dinner for Drew's birthday. I don't know what it is about those numbing shots that I just can't deal with. The last several times I've had to have them, I had a panic attack and couldn't breath. I've had IV's started in my thumbs and feet when I was sick for 6 months and never flinched, but the whole mouth thing is too much.

Did everyone see the poll is up for the next challenge?

I uploaded my DET LO just now. Gary told me that my hobby should not be stressful. I went in to talk to him about it this evening. He said, "As long as you like it, that's all that matters", so I decided to quit overanalyzing it and just upload. Bless his heart. I decided not to make another layout to choose between. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out.

It was a great price, works out to $25 per class so I agreed to take part. I'm really looking forward to it!

Hello All.

My son did have lice. Drat...We washed is hair and then treated with the Nix shampoo the school recommended and did the comb through. We didn't see anything Tuesday so we took him to school yesterday and they found some nits(eggs) so they sent him home. I got rid of the nits and we tried again this morning and he was nit free! Yay. The school hired professional people to help the parent volunteers check the kids. There were 20 kids out of 60 kids in the first grade that have it and got sent home. 14 of them were in one class. That is crazy. A couple from my son's class that had it and were sent home today. We have never had it this bad at school before. In the past it has been a couple of the kids.

Someone at school told me you can put the mayonnaise and cover it with saran wrap or a shower cap and leave it on for 3 hours. I guess it is supposed to repel them. I was reading online that you can do the same thing with olive oil.

Lisa—that sounds like a fun job. Sorry your cold is giving you a headache. Yum warm fresh sourdough bread. How do you do the sourdough starter? We have had any luck trying with it. Sounds like the interview went well.

Michelle—Putting peanut butter into chocolate ice cream is yummy. I love anything with peanut butter and chocolate! LOL

AruaL—thanks! I've heard that mayonnaise is supposed to work.

night shots are difficult regarless of lens! It's still a matter of available LIGHT ! In lieu of good light, you'll find yourself using longer shutter speeds which nessicitates using a tripod- especially if you want to keep your iso fairly low. the newer cameras have improved the noise issue at the higher iso settings, but noise will still be there. It all boils down to what you consider acceptable. A good noise reduction program can help, but using those for severe noise tends to soften the image somewhat. Again, it's what you would consider acceptable. I use NOISEWARE, but another good one is NOISE NINJA. HOWEVER, using either of these, or any other noise reduction software program, will make your image look a bit softer at the edges so then you need to sharpen the image somewhat in your grpahics software.

I have found that using a lower iso, a longer shutter speed and a tripod is the best solution for clear, sharp, low light shots. But as you can see, the subject would be static.

If you need to hand hold the camera for action shots, then using a panning motion can create great images! But your timing for pressing the shutter release needs to be spot on and your panning movement steady and smooth.

well, it's not like you'll be shooting in complete darkeness ! When you get to the field and the lights are on... take a few test shots...try setting your iso to 800 at first.
Check your white balance and set it to compensate for the color of the light from the flood lights. take a few shots and see how they look in your LCD and make any necessary adjustments from there.
Marching band movements are not as rapid as those of the football players, so you should be safe shooting in aperture priority if you so choose. Use the fastest lens you have which gives you the "reach" you want. ( I am assuming you are using a DSLR here)

If you are using a point and shoot camera, check to see if you can set the white balance and the iso. Once you have set those, the camera will do the rest whether you have it on AUTO or anything else. Many p&s cameras have presets for nigh/low light occasions. Take a few test shots using the preset if available.

AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO MOVE AROUND to get your images ! In the bleachers, along the side lines, down on the ground looking up, from the end zones,... you'd be surprised at the difference a change in direction makes! Try to zoom in on smaller segments that tell a story... just the drumstick hitting the drum! Just the face of the drum major blowing the whistle... that type of thing.

Make all your adjustment decisions BEFORE it's crunch time ! Then you can just concentrate on taking the shots you want.

You are going to do fine.

Thank you so much, Carolyn!!! I was hoping you'd pop in before tonight!
I am usually shy about being conspicuous to get my shot, but not so much with the band since they expect it of me. I do plan to be on the sidelines and moving around in the stands. I love the drumstick idea. Hadn't thought of that one before.

I have a Nikon D40. Mostly I guess I'm nervous because don't have an external flash. I hate my onboard flash and usually go to great lengths to avoid using it. I will probably be aching for one after tonight. I can't decide if I should use my 18-55 lens or the 55-200. I'll want to get wide shots of the band on the field, but I really want to get a bunch of closer shots of the kids. But I know that's a silly thing to overthink, since I can change lens at any time.

Ok... white balance... Mine usually stays on auto. Any particular setting you think might work for me? Also, to preset white balance do I need to have a special white card? or can I just aim at anything white? I was planning to use 800 ISO. I have a 1600 setting but I'm afraid of overly noisy pictures.

Thank you so much, Carolyn!!! I was hoping you'd pop in before tonight!
I am usually shy about being conspicuous to get my shot, but not so much with the band since they expect it of me. I do plan to be on the sidelines and moving around in the stands. I love the drumstick idea. Hadn't thought of that one before. many times, the smaller more intimate details tell a wonderful story all their own. don't be afraid to experiment with position!!!! I have permanently ingrained grass stains on the knees of all my jeans and Lisa can confirm this !

I have a Nikon D40. Mostly I guess I'm nervous because don't have an external flash. any kind of flash is not going to be much help at a greater distance ! You can, however, use the flash to "freeze" the action to a certain extent. If you do use the flash, please be aware that your background will probably be very dark and any forground objects in the photo will be brighter ! So just make sure you don't have anyones head in the way ! I hate my onboard flash and usually go to great lengths to avoid using it. I will probably be aching for one after tonight. I can't decide if I should use my 18-55 lens this will give you great shots of the whole band on the field. But it may also include all the sideline "stuff". Try the 55-200 when you are in the stands and see if it works for the group at that distancea at the 55mm setting . Just a thought and something i would try. A wide angle lens is a wonderful storytelling lens but CAN get TOO MUCH into the image. or the 55-200[COLOR="Red"]will definitely give you more "reach" for individuals and those "intimate" shots. Again, try a test shot with your lens zoomed all the way out to 200, get up as close as you can, fill the frame and use the flash! You may be surprised ! closer shots of the kids. But I know that's a silly thing to overthink, since I can change lens at any time.Since you have done this before you already have a good idea of what you want for 'group" shots. Take those and then switch lenses for the individual shots. Less lens changing means less you have to think about and the less likelyhood you miss a great shot !

Ok... white balance... Mine usually stays on auto. Auto will work and you can always tweak the WB in PS or Lightroom. Any particular setting you think might work for me? Not too sure as I don't really know if the floodlights are tungsten, halogen whatever. Again, this is EXACTLY what you need your test shots for. If it's a pain in the butt, just use the auto. Also, to preset white balance do I need to have a special white card? A white card works best, but i have used my white socks in a pinch. The trick is to have the white card/sock in the SAME light as the subject.. so unless you are going onto the field, then Auto may be your best option. or can I just aim at anything white? I was planning to use 800 ISO. I have a 1600 setting but I'm afraid of overly noisy pictures.

JUST AN FYI that has nothing to do with this specific discussion; Nikons, in general, tend to shoot a bit on the bluish side which can wreak havoc with skin tones. I always have my WB set to CLOUDY when shooting people in decent avaialble light. Shooting with the WB set to CLOUDY adds a bit of warmth (red) to the image. And I definitely like my people warm, not bluish (cold).

i would definitely NOT go higher than 800 with your camera unless you really have to. . ( and this is my PERSONAL choice) i had the D50 and 800 was my personal limit. I did shoot at 1600, but for my tastes, there was WAY too much noise! Granted, it was better to get what i wanted than miss it entirely, but i was still sad that the image just wasn't "right".

I really can't stress the importance of those test shots tho.. taking the 5 or 10 minutes to get your camera set up BEFORE can save you so much frustration/heartache/post processing work/irritation AFTER !

I've been to weddings where the photog chose his spots, set up the camera settings and wrote them down for reference ! That way, when going to each location, he knew EXACTLY what the best camera settings would be. Once the subjects were in place it was just a matter of setting the exposure. And since you will be in a situation where the floodlights will be at the same strength throughtout, you have a wonderful opportunity to get set up in advance.

You already have a mental list of the shots you NEED to take- so you know what lens to use.

And you are already thinking of what different shots you WANT to take, -again, you know what lens you want to use!

SO ALL IS GOOD TO GO !

And on the plus side... you do all the games so if one set of images is less than ideal, you have other games to refine your technique on ! I have failed more times than I care to admit, but I learned what to do/not to do ONCE I SAW THE IMAGE ! But, you can re-do almost the exact same image at another game !!!!!!! It's not like a wedding- once and done. LUCKY YOU.

Michelle.... this is a shot using a wide angle lens in an unusual way. Putting something close to the lens with something else BEHIND tells a great story.. And this is something you can do while the band is just hanging out....think of several instruments on the ground with the kids in the background... that type of thing. Just set your aperture to the largest number (f/22), set your focus to about 5 feet ( you will need to shut off auto focus) and take the shot.

this is definitely one to be done layinig on your belly and in good light.. something for future reference and an image your 18-55 will do well. A wide angle lens, by it's very nature, "shoves" everything into the background, leaving you free to "fill" the foreground with something interesting. So you can use it to show vastness OR use it to lessen distance between 2 objects.

Because you are shooting with a small aperture, the image is sharp front to back. ( foreground to background). Any blurring here is due to the fast motion of the players but it works well .
TELL A STORY: ( fill the foreground)
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30539566&l=e39343cb81&id=1076590219

DECREASE DISTANCE BETWEEN 2 OBJECTS: not a great image. the distance between the flowers and the tree in the background was at least 30 feet, yet here it looks as though it is right behind the flowers.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/DSC_0174.jpg

and as an FYI, although it was obviously sunny out, the WB is set to cloudy... and see how nice the skin tones look ! Setting a custon WB can be a pain because you need to reset it whenever you change locations . I try to streamline as much as possible so tend to keep the WB at one setting .

is the class today??? OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH you are so lucky to be able to do it so close to home AND for so inexpensive. Let me know how it goes ! And have you heard from your job interview yet? Hey, that pic on your blog page looks awfully familiar ! LOL

First: class has postponed until next week because of the holiday weekend and to try and find one more person so that we can keep that excellent price.

Second: hoping to here about the job today. So far, no word this morning but she tends to do most emails in the afternoon (my time).

Third: told you why I wanted that photo! It looks great and I have to remember to give you credit on my page somewhere! I uploaded it in a hurry that day and haven't thought to go back!

Personally, nothing of note here ! Have fully recovered from jet lag and temperature control ! LOL! Worked all week and now looking forward to a long weekend. Going to a surprise 30th anniversary party on Saturday in Waterford , CT.,( parents of my youngest son's GF) and then on Monday taking family portraits for a friend ( you've seen my little friend Jack ad nauseum) .. such is my weekend. Will probably be hung over on Sunday, tho... once again I'm partying with the hardcore.:party: Last time I got together with the GF's parents, we all acted like silly people, dancing in the kitchen, and it was caught on TAPE. How embarassining !
Stop by Sunday Chat if you can. There's going to be a surprise and the new challenge season begins.

Would this apply to animals with white coats too? I never realized my Nikon did that, or is it just the DSLR's that tend to do it?

I certainly can attest to the fact that she will do anything to get the shots she wants. The LO of DD's hair do from the zoo she sat on the ground and even made semi-rude comments to a totally rude woman who kept getting in the way. The ladies daughter finally told her mother to move in no uncertain terms, but until then she just was not paying attention. I kept wondering when the lady was going to see "lady with big camera - stay out of way!"

I will use both. I don't trust the film I have, but want to try to get decent shots out of it. The P&S will be a good back up.

I could have just smacked her rear end with the lens ! Think she would have gotten the message, then??
