I know! She was just not looking at what was going on around her. It's such a common problem.
So, how is it you are spending so much time here on a work day? We do seem to be playing all by ourselves at the moment.

Would this apply to animals with white coats too? I never realized my Nikon did that, or is it just the DSLR's that tend to do it?
I know this is true for all Nikon DSLR'S.... I can't remember if it was true with my film Nikon...but I don't think so. I am under the impression it has something to do with the sensor....

Sweeeeet! Love 4 day weekends. 3 go just a little too fast, 4 you feel like you really had a break.
Looks like we are car shopping this weekend. DH blew his radiator hose the other night and when we added up all the repairs that thing needed it came to more than what he paid for it in the first place. One of the used dealers in town has extended his "klunkers" deal and will give $4500 on any trade-in. Since that is double what he paid for it, we thought it would be a good time to just move up a little. It will still be a "used" car, but hopefully it won't have transmission problems.
We are also really saying prayers. We have a prospective buyer on the house in Oregon. Since the bank has started foreclosure proceedings, this would really be great! Say a prayer that they come up with a number that would be acceptable to the bank instead of foreclosure!

Stop by Sunday Chat if you can. There's going to be a surprise and the new challenge season begins.
I certainly can attest to the fact that she will do anything to get the shots she wants. The LO of DD's hair do from the zoo she sat on the ground and even made semi-rude comments to a totally rude woman who kept getting in the way. The ladies daughter finally told her mother to move in no uncertain terms, but until then she just was not paying attention. I kept wondering when the lady was going to see "lady with big camera - stay out of way!"
LOL!!! I can just picture it. I am less reserved with the band as far as going for the shot, because they know I'm the "picture mom", but I don't think I'll be laying on the ground. I've been on my knees and climbed way up on the scaffolding though.
I wish I could be at Sunday scrappers this weekend but I'll be at the beach. oh, bummer huh? Ya'll think about me in my beach chair in the sand sippin' my beer, okay?

COOL BEANS!!! At last ! At this point, better ANY number than foreclosure ! Not that it's a good thing, but the credit damage is far more long lasting and you may be able to take a loss deduction on your taxes ! Sometimes you gotta look for the small things ! Hope it goes through and both sides are pleased !

If I don't do so good tonight, I get another chance, well, 5 more. Also, my lighting is going to change over the course of the night too. When we head to the field at 7 it won't be dark yet. I'll have to remember to keep an eye on my settings and remember to adjust. I think I'm going to start with my 55-200 and switch before the 18-55 for the halftime show. And I'll be sure to post some shots, but it may have to wait until Tuesday when we get back from our trip.

Good gravy, you guys have been chatty today! I leave for a few hours and have 3 or more pages to read! :)
Chris, when I worked in child care, I had to take CPR every year for 10 years. Not fun, I know. When do you want my BAG photo?
Yesterday was DS's b-day, I think I told you. We had a nice family dinner with all 3 kids. Emily left early to go home because she had chemistry homework, then eventually Drew left to go see a friend, so Lindsey was still here. I could tell she wanted to talk. She's 23, and had a relationship with a really great guy for about 4 years, but last Oct she decided she wasn't happy and wanted to see what else was out there. Well, after being in a relationship for 8 months with a controlling, possessive, emotionally abusive guy who we were afraid would eventually get physically abusive, she decided what she'd had before was what she really wanted. So she got back together with the first guy and they talked about marriage and everything, then after a few weeks he decided he didn't want to be tied down because he'd had so much freedom in the past year. So she's heartbroken, and talked and cried. It just broke my heart. She doesn't make friends real easy because there is so much stuff she doesn't like to do or is too afraid to try. We try to get her to try things outside her comfort zone, but she just won't. She doesn't know where to go to meet people. Growing up is hard.

Aw Chris, thanks so much! That brought tears to my eyes! The first Christmas Gary and I were married she bought me that movie Stepmom with Julia Roberts. She said, "I hope you know what I mean when I give this to you." It was the perfect gift and to this day is my favorite one she's given me.

For anyone who doesn't follow football, the BCS is the perennial haves who think the have nots could never possibly hope to measure up to their hallowed halls. Including Alabama, whose coach last year said that none of the Ute players would never even be recruited by Alabama. I believe that was before we whipped their butts in the Sugar Bowl. So yes I HATE the BCS and the hypocrisy that they try to justify. Needless to say I LOOOOOOOOVVVVVED this clip. yes it is hard when you are shy and introverted. Years ago my son Tim was the same way and my heart would bleed for him knowing how badly he wanted to join the group of kids playing but didn't know how to go about it. We as parents can help our kids in so many ways, but we cannot make friends for them. Ususally work, church, friends of friends met at house parties etc are "soft" areas to meet new people. Volunteer work may be another option if that is something she is willing to try- hospital, local school etc. And sometimes we need to realize the problem lies within and make a change.
And YEAH FOR DREW !!! Hope he finds this new path easier to travel !!! And happy birthday to him !

I'll bet! What's the latest on that anyway?
You know, Heather asked about my sourdough and I have meant to give the recipe.
To create the starter:
2 cups warm (not hot, just warm) water
2 cups flour
1 packet dry yeast (if you buy the jar, make sure you read to see how much is a packet, it's like 2 Tsps or something)
Although the recipe doesn't call for it, I put about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp sugar in the first mix and then on rare occasions when I am growing it. (Gives the yeast a little something to eat!)
Mix and place in a warm spot over night.
Next morning, remove 1/2 cup and put in frig (best if in a dark container with little light getting in, but not closed on top, it needs O2) add:
3 to 4 cups flour (I seem to get along well with 3 cups and maybe just a pinch or two more)
2 Tbs melted shortening (make sure this is not too hot, just warm enough to melt it)
2 Tbs sugar
knead dough until sticky
I turn the oven on real low (as low as it will go) when I first start adding the ingredients then turn it off before placing the dough inside. You may not need to do this if you are in a warm climate.
Leave the dough in the bowl and cover with a towel. Place in a warm spot and let grow until doubled (about 4 hours)
Knock down dough and knead adding 1/4 tsp Baking Soda to 1 Tbs warm water. Shape loaves and place in pans (you will have 2 to 3 medium loaves)
Cover and let grow in a warm place until double (about an hour or so)
Place in 375 degree oven for 50 to 60 minutes.
and there you have it. Fresh Sourdough.
Remember, to keep a starter going you must use it regularly. I find that it works best if used at least once per week. It can be used for any sourdough recipe. Also, never, ever use metal bowls or utensils and definitely not a metal container. It will ruin the metal and pick up a really nasty taste.

Rene - I'm so glad Drew is doing well. Maybe the events of late have put a little scare in him and I hope it lasts.
Chris - love that clip!
Carolyn - that link took you to a D700 on sale, body only for about $2300.
OK, caught up! LOL
all i got was a PRODUCT NOT FOUND page... On sale for 2300.... now you know another reason I went with the D300. i just could NOT justify the expense of a full frame camera and NOT make any money back on it. Nikon also makes another full frame camera at 25 mega pixels for the paltry sum of 8000.00 or thereabouts.

yes it is hard when you are shy and introverted.
I mentioned to her church and work, but she's a substance abuse counselor who has never had a substance abuse problem. She says most of the people she works with are recovering addicts themselves, and not something she wants to get involved in, plus most of them are older than her. She knows church would be a good place, but she really only has a couple of friends, and they don't go to church, and one of them is about to move. Believe it or not, I used to be almost as shy as she is. When I was in school, it would freak me out if my friend was home sick because I didn't know what to do then and didn't have anyone to have lunch with or hang out with. It wasn't until I was probably 30 before I realized I was going to have to be more outgoing and learn how to talk to people in order to make friends. So fast forward 4 or 5 years and when I met Gary, it was me who initiated the conversation when we met. And I'm so glad I did! :)

And be much more enjoyable ! Maybe Chris should do the manly car shopping and you keep the kidlets home. Years ago, I went car shopping with the kids ( only had 2 at the time). As I sat there dickering prices, Tim managed to open the door of a showroom Bentley and was walking around the backseat. I told the salesman if he agreed to my price, I 'd get the kid out of the car... deal done. Neither of us could figure out HOW he managed to get the door open- he was only 2 at the time !

I think somewhere along the line i did declare a semi moratorium on scrapping and doing more with the photography.... i certainly don't want to look like a dunce in October with any new equipment nor look like a slacker with regards to skill.. I know no one expects perfection, but I want to at least be in the ballpark.( left field corner no doubt, but at least somewhere IN the ballpark!)I've seen some of the images submitted to FLICR from his students.. and believe me, I'm way out in left field. I'm hoping that this workshop will give me just the boost I need to get to the next level-whatever that may be.

Hey Carolyn, I need some suggestions for a strength training regime. They have a weight room at the Fitness Center that I go to, and there is a guy that showed me around the machines etc. but I don't know how many reps/sets or how many pounds etc and I don't know which ones I should avoid w/ my knees. I tried a few different things and stopped when they started aching.

I tried a few different things and stopped when they started aching.
as a general rule.... light weight-more reps for strength training... for example arm curls to work the biceps... start with a lighter weight (5 lbs) and do 30 reps. At the end of the 30 you SHOULD feel the muscle has been worked. Continue doing it at this weight until you no longer "feel the burn" and then add a small increment of weight and do the 30 reps (or keep the weight the same and add more reps.). and just gradually build up the weight. You want the muscle to feel as though it's been worked, but you don't want "noodle arms" .
for abs... the most effective and best is core work. Place your heels on a med/ large ball, place your hands on your abs, and then lift your back and butt off the floor and hold that "bridge" for the count of 10. the core abdominal muscles are extensor muscles and strengthen doing this as opposed to cruches . Crunches work the surface ab muscles but can and do cause back problems. Repeat this "bridge' exercise as many times as you wish.
With problem knees, you are more limited.. so weighted squats may not be the thing. And I know we have spoken about this before. I might suggest you speak to a trainer about some knee/leg exercises while in the pool.. works the muscle WITHOUT the weight.
So, in a nutshell... LIGHT WEIGHTS- MORE REPS and build up the weight slowly.
Target a body area and work that on one day. Target another the next day...for example.. Day one- arms and back. Day two- chest and abs. Day three- legs (gluts, hams, calves) and rotate.
You could actually work the abs everyday as they are considered "fast twitch" muscles meaning they can be worked and recover faster. Switching things up keeps the boredom from setting in.
Make sure you warm up/stretch out BEFORE starting the actual exercises as well as after. Stretching the muscle in the opposite direction you worked it AFTER the exercise releases the muscle and does help relive cramping. Some people like to work groups of opposing muscles..biceps/triceps, chest/back.. that type of thing.... take a day or two off and just do some light cardio (walking, aerobics) NEVER FORGET THE CARDIO.
I'll ask Tim if he can suggest anything for the problem knees.

It is especially my right one. The funny thing is it has started hurting worse since I have been trying to swim faster, especially on a flutter kick. I did a drill with the kickboard and just kicked, as fast I could for 2 laps trying hard to move the whole leg and not just kicking from the knee, by the time I was done it was aching big time. I could only do breast stroke and fly for the rest of the time and this was a week ago or so. Since then I have been babying it and taking ibu. Why oh why is my body betraying me?! I exercise, I try to do right by it and it thinks it should be getting old! sigh ;)

Lisa.. these are great shots!! and I'm so impressed you could orgainze everyone ! WOWZA!!!! I would have lost my mind trying to get everything set up as well as you have.. So... that being said, read my cc's with the understaniding that I'm looking at them with the same maniacally critical eye that I would eval my own shots..and the cc's are with love.. just telling you what I see and suggestions to think about should you decide to do round 2...
However.. either of these would be fine for printing...
Here's my trial run:

Oh, and I have already suggested he go alone!
yes, give it a try at 6.3 and even a bit less... I keep forgetting this is a point and shoot and the fixed lens/f stop ratios work a bit different than what I am used to.... and see what happens with the fence!!!! The fence is a real visual distraction- if you are looking for a print quality, true portrait style. If your camera zooms in , try moving the camera back a bit and then zoom in.. might be just enough to capture head to toe AND get rid of some of the fence.
on the kids pic...I'd try again and see how it looks with Miss Rai sitting in front of the boys. have the boys lean towards each other a bit to fill up the "dead space".... this will do a couple of things.. allow you to eliminate the fence which appears to be piercing Miss Rai's head and make the kids look more "together". Or have one of the kids sitting on the ground with the dogs and the other two snuggled on the seat.
I am NOT trying to be a pain in the butt here... as both of these are excellent shots- well exposed, nice contrast, great color. I'm just cc'ing them as though I took them and what I would try to change ! ( and you have seen what a maniac I am!- sorry)
Are these shot vertically or horizontally? The only reason I ask is becasue I don't know if they were shot horizontal and you've cropped them a bit..if shot horizontally and cropped, try shooting vertically, zoom in and reposition yourself so the frame is filled a bit better. That will eliminate surrounding "clutter" and give you an overall cleaner image.
Love Maddy laying across your lap ! And Chaos looks absolutely REGAL in his pose. If you could get him to sit like that by himself, that would make an AWESOME doggie portrait.
You've really done a spendid job with moving targets! And the tweaks I've mentioned are really VERY minor things.. and things I would ONLY see once I saw the image on the computer monitor. The only MAJOR thing is that fence......

It was fun playing paparazzi. And I changed my lens 3 times! I think/hope I got some good shots. I played around with settings and kept an eye on them as the light changed. have you had any injury to the knees at all??? From what you are describing- especially with the discomfort while doing the kick particular to the stroke you are doing... it almost sounds like a ligament problem...the knees take severe pounding on a regular basis... weight bearing, move laterally and horizontally, and at times we even try to make them work in reverse ! Truthfully, if it were me ( and I am a medical weenie) and they were keeping me from comfortably doing stuff, I would have them checked out... If you have access to a physical therapist, have the knees eval-ed..may just be as simple as chronic tendonitis/inflammation or as nasty as the beginnings of arthritis... but DEFINITELY worth getting checked. Correct diagnosis/treatment is better than aggravating the situation and causing more pain.
I did speak to Tim this morning... and he recommended the same thing as I was thinking.. especially when he read your post about the swimming. it would not be a good thing to talk about specific exercises until a formal dx was made... doing so could actually make things worse !

when we are learning ( and I definitely include myself in here!) we tend to have a form of "tunnel vision".. we are so concerned with the subject(s), we totally neglect to actually LOOK AND SEE what is in the background ! Took a nifty shot tonight, looked at it in the LCD and wondered "Where the HECK did that black purse come from?" (it was a black blob in the lower left hand corner) Did I see it when framing..NO...Did I actually bother to even LOOK at the background/foreground "stuff".....BIG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! I also have an adorable little boy, great expression on his face, and it looks as though forks are piercing his chin! (sigh!!!)

Well, it's nice to know you fall into the trap as well!
We didn't get to go try again. The weather was gorgeous, but DD was not feeling well all day. She woke with a sore throat, runny nose and just plain blah. She even fell asleep on my bed at 10 this morning (and she never does that). The only playing that girl did all day was just a bit ago in the bath. It's amazing what warm water can do for making a cold feel better. No fever, just totally stuffy and blech poor thing.

Sorry you DD is not feeling well Lisa. Strep is going around here in Lubbock already this season it seems.
We are back from the Tech game. We won 38 to 13! Yay, but definitely didn't play as well as we should have or expected to. We have a new quarterback this year, so I'm sure there will be an adjustment period.
I had a sever allergy attack while at the game and coming home, and didn't have any Zyrtec at home, so I took some Nyquil. Maybe that will make me sleep tonight. (Crossing my fingers.)

Question for carolyn or anybody who has learned from that understanding exposure book. On pg 38-39, he talks about presetting ur distance when using a very stopped down Ap instead of trying to focus. "I set my Ap to f/22 for max dof and preset my focus so that the distance of 2 ft is aligned directly above the center mark near the front of the lens." I think this means switch the button to manual focus and turn the focusing ring so the 2 is in the middle of that little window that is on top of my lens. Is that right?! TIA

Okay 7 am is just WAY too early. I don't know the last time I was up this early unless I hadn't slept yet! BUT...I'm totally stoked about Buttermilk Falls. Got my camera ready...got my sneakers ready... It should be a good time. My dad's going with us...so that's a bit of a treat as he doesn't make it to a lot of the fun stuff anymore. Hopefully I can get some good shots of him with the kids. :D

Absolutely correct ! Anytime you preset your focus, either shut off auto focus or put the lens/camera into manual. If you put the camera itself into manual, make sure you adjust your light meter to read 0 by adjusting either your shutter speed. That is exactly he technique I used in those two pics I posted earlier- the basketball game and the garden/tree. WHEN YOU LOOK IN THE VIEWFINDER, THE IMAGE IS NOT GOING TO APPEAR AS THOUGH IT'S IN FOCUS!!!! But don't worry because you are looking at the image as though the lens is wide open. When you take the shot, it will be correct. If your camera has a DEPTH OF FIELD PREVIEW BUTTON, you can push that button and see what the image will look like once it's exposed.

Oh yay! Yeah he points that out about the not looking in focus too. Ok another ?. Next he is talking about fixed lens cameras is that like the p/s cameras? He is talking that a "7-9mm" zoom is really more like a 35mm on a dslr. But where can u see the number? On my p/s I just have zoom in and zoom out type of thing. Oh yeah and this was in a discussion about how the differnce in focal lengths results in f/2.8 really being more like f/8. I know this doesn't apply to my d80 but thought it might to my nikon 710. Ty!

Yes, your thought process is exactly correct.... the f/stop-zoom ratios seem to be different with the point and shoots vs DSLR. That's one reason he likes the little point and shoots that have a macro setting. Becuase of that specific difference, the little point and shoots will render greated depth of field, handheld, for macro shots than can a DSLR even with a dedicated macro. His little point and shoot, set on macro, has a depth of field almost equivelent to an f/64 !!!!!! Macro, by it's very nature has an extemely limited, if any , depth of field.
unfortunately, I don't think you can see that number ! I am not exactly sure how the numbers are attained.. but there must be some type of conversion chart or something, somewhere buried in the "who the heck cares about this stuff" files. LOL!
does your d80 have a DOF preview button ?

Lisa... here is my 'pierced chin" image.. but look at the little face.. how cute! Talk about tunnel vision! Could I have moved? probably not- outdoor party in a small backyard filled with tables, chairs, and about 60 people. I would have toppled over or crushed something/someone. Kids expressions only last a limited time...no excuse but it is what it is.

My nephew told me today he wants me to teach him all I know about photography. He's 6, but he's already taking some stunning photos (with the occasional finger shot LOL) He said "I want to be an architect, a photographer, and an artist." So cute. He was surprised to know I took classes and that's when he was begging me to teach him.
He took a picture of me at the end of the day...and I can't believe how big I've gotten. I definitely need to keep exercising...I don't like what I've become with the holing up....LOL

well according to that exposure book and to our resident expert, Ms. Carolyn, when you look thru the viewfinder it shows you what your shot would look like with the aperture value wide open for your camera, EVEN if you have it stopped down to f22 or something, so it looks like you have shallow dof even though when you SHOOT you won't. So on some models of camera there is a DOF preview button that will show you what your dof will look like when you take the picture. As I had never even heard of such a thing and it is a newer kind of thing, I figured my camera did not have it. But when I checked my user's manual, behold and lo, it DID!

oh oh oh! according to my book (lol) it is partly cuz when it says 2.8 or something like that for your Ap, it is really more like 5.6, cuz the focal length is different. I think if you step back and then zoom in more, that should help your DOF. Oh Carolyn, straighten Shana out if I am leading her astray. ;)

Well who knew?!!!!!! I DO have a DOF preview button on my D80! How cool am I?!!!! Oh yeah baby!
well you are special.. now you just need to know what it's for...specifically it's to give you a preview of how "blurry" your backgroud will be.
When you look through your lens, it's difficult to tell exactly what your DOF will be because you are looking through the lens as if it were wide open. If you press the DOF button you will immediately notice the image becomes darker. But once you get past that, really LOOK and you can see how sharp/unsharp your BG is. Basically, depressing the DOF button lifts the mirror inside the camera (as it would if you depressed the shutter button) so you can now "see" exactly what the image will be.
If you are shooting with a lower f/stop number ( f/2.8, f/4) you will not see much difference as the lens is ALREADY showing you that... but once you start hitting f/8 and above, you can really see the change.
And ...errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... its not a new thing.. my 36 year old film slr had it. Unfortunately, it's one of those things the camera companies leave out when they manufacture cost effective cameras. It's too bad they leave out the things like that when they decide to re-manufacture an item in order to get the price to appeal to a broader spectrum of users. It's a small thing, but once you get used to it, it's ever so handy .
What good is this? you ask... well, sometimes you want a certain amount of distinction in the background to give your subject a sense of place without being a distraction....i.e. your family in front of the mountains/trees etc ( lots of busy-ness) where you want your family to be the full focus, but having the bk not completely blurred out... kind of being able to let the bk tell some of the story..

OK.. should it EVER happen that you ACTUALLY make a MISTAKE!!!! There is actually a valid explaination about the differences between the focal length/fixed lens/f stop inter-relationships of p&s vs dslr... but I have VERY LITTLE concrete knowledge as to what it is.. I did find some information on it recently, but as I rarely use my point and shoot, I just kinda glossed over the info... I'll see if I can hunt it down ...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I found it....
" Due to the digital point and shoot camera's smaller sensor size, the depth of field at it's usual smallest aperutre of f/8 is actually close to f/32 on a 35 mm camera. In exposure-speak, that is a gain of almmost 4 stops; which simply means for those times when you want massive depth of field with your dslr, you would find yourself shooting at f/32 at a shutter speed 4 stops slower than if you were making that same image with your digital point and shoot, for which you would be at f/8 in that situation.
This means that with the point and shoot, not only do you record some amazing depth of filed, but you do so at a relatively fast shutter speed." (Understanding Close Up Photography by Bryan Petersen.)

This means that with the point and shoot, not only do you record some amazing depth of filed, but you do so at a relatively fast shutter speed." (Understanding Close Up Photography by Bryan Petersen.)
ok but WHY does the smaller sensor size change up the focal lengths and f/stops. also does this mean if you have a full frame camera with the bigger sensor size (I think that is what they are called) that you will have the reverse? much more shallow DOF than you would think based on the numbers?

also I forgot to mention earlier, I tried "the button" and I was expecting for it to go dark, cuz I was a good student and read it in Bryan's book (lol) but it was hard for me to see much difference, but I wonder if it was cuz I was in the house and zoomed in. I did have an f/22 so I know my Ap was high enough.

So, with a fixed lens, you are in essence "compressing" the same size image onto a smaller sensor. and somehow that works together to make that smaller lens aperture "more powerful" for lack of a better word. I don't know if that makes sense the way I wrote it.. but it does make sense in my head. And, NO you willl not have the reverse with a full frame because that size sensor ( the same size as a piece of 35mm film) is the BASIS! So in full frame, the f/stop is what it is !
You are aware that even your D80 and my D300 have a slightly smaller sensor. That's part of the reason our lenses (for DX cameras) are rated differently than those for full frame (FX).. it's a 1.5 factor... My litle 50mm DX lens will give me a image comprable to a 75mm on a FX camera. My 50-135mm would be comparable to a 75-200mm FX lens. And it's due to the sensor size. the new DX lenses are made specifically for the DX cameras/sensor size while FX lenses can work both ways. (film and digital).

I did have an f/22 so I know my Ap was high enough. At f/22, the viewfinder should go pretty dark.. but look VERY CAREFULLY and you will see all the sharp detail in the background... being in the house may make a difference. To be honest, I don't think I've used it in the house- only outside.
If you frame up an image at f/22, check the DOF, and then drop the aperture to f/11, you should see the difference I'm talking about. It took me quite a while to get past the "gray" and SEE what I was looking for.
I find myself using it more often when I'm set on a tripod setting up a specific shot.. when I have the time to be particular. When I'm on the fly, I have a pretty good idea of what the f/stop I've chosen will look like based on my lens/distance to subject/amount of zoom. I don't flub that too often.

Hey guys! I spent the afternoon with the family exploring. We went to a park the kids and I had seen on the map. It had a nice view and I may have some pretty decent pics, but to tell you the truth, I was playing with the Ap so much, who knows. I don't want to download them just yet either because I'm trying to get this upgrade done and I don't need any more backing up to do.
I have now spent all evening burning DVDs of scrap supplies (well, the zip files anyway!) Took 4 DVDs to get all the zip files burned. It did include all the brushes, fonts and tutorials that I have downloaded, but still 4 DVD of zipped files just for my kits and stuff! (I think I better quit buying!)
Any way, the park was OK, but the trails were a disappointment. Then we drove down onto Turnagain Arm just enough for the kids to see some of the Inlet and arm. Tide was real low when we started and within like 1/2 an hour it was just roaring in. Good example for the kids to stay off the mud flats! They had fun at the pull off as there was some history about the train and an old snow plow train engine. Hope those pics look good!
I read and re-read all this stuff about the Ap and hope that one of these days it makes sense and that I have a camera that will actually do what I want it to do!

so I am trying to get this all straight in my head. I have a 50mm lens so that is really equivalent to a 75mm lens on my old 35 mm camera? Now does this affect zoom too, like is my 18-200 going to zoom in closer because it is really more like a 27-300? Or is most of the effect just seen on the dof?

Now does this affect zoom too, like is my 18-200 going to zoom in closer because it is really more like a 27-300? Or is most of the effect just seen on the dof?Yes.. because the sensor in a DX camera is smaller by COMPARISON ,a 50mm DX lens on a DX camera = a 75mm FX lens on an FX camera...As far as your 18-200 mm lens goes, check the info tag on the lens.. I'm sure you will see DX somewhere on there.. if so, it is made SPECIFICALLY for a digital DX camera and may not work on a film camera. and by work I mean it may only work in full manual and not have any capabilty with the light meter in you film camera. Many of the old film lenses will fit on the DX/FX cameras, but have not auto focus and no lght metering.. so the point may be moot.
Tomorrow, I am going to dig out my film lenses and try an experiment. I already know my DX lenses will go on my old film camera but don't work... and don't forget it's over 30 years old. But I'm gonna mount the camera on a tripod, set up a subject , and use a 50 mm DX to take an image. Then I'll put on the film 50mm and see what happens.... I'm thinking a fixed lens will give the best/most obvious results.if my thinking is correct, there should be a differnce in how "close" to the camera the image looks.

yes, I think it may....and so now I'm thinking of dragging out the film zoom for my little experiment as well....I think it's a 70-300 and I have a 70-300 DX lens as well....
So, we will either have answers to our questions tomorrow with visual results, or I'll be here trying to pry lenses off the camera ..or it will be a total flop because the film lenses are too old to work on the 300. We shall see.

well according to that exposure book and to our resident expert, Ms. But when I checked my user's manual, behold and lo, it DID!

when you turn the lens (as though to take it off), you will probably momentarily lose the IS capabilitiy, but once you check your DOF and reconnect the lens, the IS should restart.
You are only checking the DOF prior to actually taking the shot, and you have to fully reconnect the lens to do so..Having or not having the IS is not a consideration at that point.

We just switched to AT&T last weekend because I was tired of all the problems with my Sprint phones and the IPhones were on sale, so we each got one of those. I don't know anything about those other phones though. When I had a touch screen Palm Treo, it never had problems with the touch screen, just other issues.

We just switched to AT&T last weekend because I was tired of all the problems with my Sprint phones and the IPhones were on sale, so we each got one of those. I don't know anything about those other phones though. When I had a touch screen Palm Treo, it never had problems with the touch screen, just other issues.
oh we can talk for free then! wahoo for us :D

OK, now I'm RTFL wetting my pants!

Hey! I could be added into that list 'cause I'm AT&T and have been for over 10 years! We thought of switching a year ago (no more like 2) but I decided not to. Now we are glad we didn't because AT&T is really the only provider up here. Yeah, we have others, but they don't work in the lower 48 so it's a waste if you plan on going outside at all (and by outside, I mean anywhere down there!)
See, I now talk Alaska talk again! Aren't I clever!
Well, I am really mad at myself! And I mean Really Mad! I have been working for over a week prepping this computer for an OS upgrade. I even had the software last week on like Thursday. Well, I was finally getting close and figured today was the day so I opened the box while I sat and watched DVDs burn last night. Guess what! I ordered the wrong box! And since I opened it, I can't return it! I can't find a copy of the OS anywhere here in town, so have to wait another week to get the right one!
AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHGHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well I am trying one more configuration on my desktop set up. So I think I told you I was trying to use my pen exclusively and I have gotten pretty good at that. My last couple of kits were done with the pen alone and I don't think you can see a difference. Now though I had to put my tablet on the upper part of my desk, which made my shoulder HURT! can you even believe it!I am feeling like the biggest whiner ever. This getting old stuff sucks, my joints are falling apart left and right. I don't have room on my pull out drawer thing for both the keyboard and the tablet, well I have room but the tablet is so far to the side it makes it impossible to design anything. Think of a paper clear out to the side trying to write instead of right in front. So now I have switched the keyboard and the tablet. The keyboard is on the upper level and the tablet is on the pull out. We will see how this goes. Wonder what will start hurting now. :D

When we built our house the cabinet builder put a huge drawer in the desk instead of a pull-out for the key board, so my keyboard has always been up high, and my shoulders always hurt. My chiropractor says he can always tell when I've been on the computer too much. I've considered having someone come out and give me an estimate redoing. So I know what you're talking about.

My goal was just to make it past Round 1 since this was my first try at the contest, so I've accomplished that, and I feel good about it. Anything else will be icing on the cake and a learning experience. I was really shocked at the amount of stress I felt in that moment of uploading. And then, I was getting nervous about those birds I blended into the background, because the rules said you can't use a photo as an element, which I didn't, I blended them, which the rules said we could do. But then I was getting comments on my layout that would say "I love how you stamped the birds onto the BG", so I was afraid that's what the judges would think.

No, you explained what you did so there should have been no mistaking what you had done. You have to remember how few people actually read you description unless they have an interest in what kit/techniques you used. But I'm sure the judges do read at least part of your comments.
Christine
09-07-2009, 03:20 PM
didn't you say in your description that you blended the birds? some how this judge knew that.
Speaking of which, you guys know how I try to comment on all of the layouts etc that you post in this thread, but I on purpose don't comment on the DET ones since I am a judge and it doesn't seem right to comment on a few and not all. :) Just so you know I still love ya!

I have to tell ya'll about something funny that happened to me today. I've been cleaning house and sometimes I mop the tile with the Swifter Wetjet, but when I think it needs it, I drag out the mop and bucket, which is what I did today. We are on a water well where we live and if anything is running, like the washer, anything else you turn on has real low pressure. So I was washing clothes and decided to put the mop bucket in the sink to fill up, but the water was just trickling out, so I left it for a minute to go do something else. Then I forgot about it for a bit and in the meantime, the pressure came back, so when I got to the kitchen, water was overflowing the sink, onto the floor and across the room!!!!!:rofl: I think this proves I need a maid.:lol:

I did put it in the description, but you know how you start to second guess yourself. One thing I did learn this round was to do the layout, then let it sit overnight and look at it again the next day. I think that helped a lot because the changes I made the next day were better ones.
Yeah, we knew, or at least I did. We know you love us, cuz you give us fabulous freebies! :D

COGRATS to Rene and Shana!!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: Can you believe it?!?!? I was seriously thinking I wouldn't make it. I'm totally stoked! Chris called me  to tell me or else I probably wouldn't have checked until tonight.
You have all been too chatty and I can't catch up so I hope you are all doing well! My in-laws 50th anniversary is at the end of the month and my SIL wants to get a scrapbook printed for them and asked me to help. She is using and online site and when I went in to help her, I couldn't take it! I couldn't do anything I wanted with the LO so I had to call her and find out how to dowload the photos to my computer so I can use PS. So I will be doing a lot of LO's for the next 10 days to get that done. But DET will come first.
Have a great day!!
