I think that's one you have to set up yourself. I just looked and it doesn't have a shortcut next to it, but there is the shortcut on the layer pallette that will do it.

oh! that is me and the answer is
ctrl+j
also if you want to just cut out a piece of a layer use ctrl+shift+j but that will leave a hole in your base layer
another option is to hold down the alt button or whatever your equiv is Miss Mac and then click on the layer you want to duplicate and drag it up or down in the LP

Have a good night with G-Dizzle yo!
We looked through a whole box of photos, and found a few good ones. The problem is he doesn't remember anything about what the dates or occasions are, so I told him there would just have to be a bunch of pages with no dates or journaling.
On a funny note, we found a couple of pictures of his mom before he was born (he's the oldest). And they are a tiny bit provocative. So I'm going to scan them in and email them to her and tell her she has some 'splainin to do! Have ya'll heard that song by Clay Walker "Before She Was Mama"? That's what this reminds me of. lol

Stichie - Wow! You really are doing a fantastic job with those photos! I'm sure realizing you had captured that reflection just made your day1
Crys - please don't be mad at Chris! She didn't know because I was sneaky! Be mad at me for knowing how to ask so that someone would answer! And believe me, you guys have really made this birthday something special! Now Heather has added in her GC, so between 3 of you I can shop til I drop, and thanks to Carolyn's gift and those I can scrap til I (oh, can't think of a good rhyme, just one I really don't want to use ). You guys are awesome even though I told at least 2 of you not to do what you did!
Gonna stop now so I don't cry!
Lisa, I am NOT mad at Chris. I am, however, not very happy with the store. If the person knows the name of the sender, what's the point of Anonymous? :( The real kick for me is the recipient NOT knowing who the sender is. :annoyed:
And please don't cry; you share your generosity in so many ways. And...belive it or not, I had no clue is was your birthday time!
It's kinda cool here today. In the 50's. I've been in all day scrapping. It's the first full day I've had at home in awhile, so I'm taking advantage!
And in the midwest, we're having the craziest summer/fall I can ever remember. Couldn't get rain when the crops needed it, now it won't stop. 11th coolest summer on record. The coldest July ever. Very few warm days in September and none in October and no Indian summer, per se. Two days it did get to 66° and today we awoke to 60° and it's supposed to be 53° this pm! :( And raining like mad.
Ask her how I did with my last post. I googled gangsta dictionary.

It was. I got several laughs out of it too, seeing Gary in the 70's with his longer hair and in the 80's with his beard! His mother was absolutely gorgeous. She still is. You would not know she is 70. She looks like she's about 50 at the most.

Well, then you should be better any minute now with that lovin!
My mom was always the stronger personality between her and my dad. My dad was always so gentle and quiet. But in their later years, my mom was the BEST patient and my dad was the WORST!!!! LOL My mom loved the attention of the doctors and nurses when she was in the hospital. She did what they asked and wanted to please them. Not my Dad!!! Once he had the Alzheimers, going to the hospital was a horrible experience. He would get so disoriented and he would get beligerent. The last 6 months he was in the hospital once a month with cancer issues and one time he literally made me rearrange the covers on his feet for about 12 hours straight!! There was no making him happy, and he didn't want to stay in the bed even tho he was on fall precautions. After about 12 hours of fixing the covers, getting more blankets, trying to keep him in the bed, I had to go home, I was about to break down and cry. I truly expected to find him restrained when I got back the next morning. They had given him morphine to try and calm him down, but it had the opposite effect on him. But when I got there the next day, he was sitting up in the chair eating breakfast. He said "Good morning, where have you been?"
Ok sorry for going on and on, but you saying DH said you were a bad patient reminded me of all that.

DD has been home today, but no fever, just headache, sore throat and very congested. She's not going to the football game tonight, but I may have to go up there before the game. I haven't found anybody to handle uniforms for me. Not that there's much to handle. The newspaper lady emailed me. She was writing up our competition results for the paper and asked if it was okay to use one of my pictures again. Hmmm... let me think about that... YES!

Oh is she upset to miss the game or is she too sick to care? I hope she feels better soon!
Right now we are setting up the rv for tailgating tomorrow. Tonight Gary is taking me to dinner for my b-day. Then I have stupidly let my stepdaughter talk me into going to see Paramormal Activity. Don't know why. I hate stuff like that and I always scream but she wanted me to go so bad so I lost my mind and said ok. Tomorrow we gave the game. Then Sunday I'm gonna scrap. That is my plan.

No, she's not upset at all. She's feeling pretty crummy and it's hard to play an instrument when you're so congested that you can hardly breathe.
Okay I know you and Lisa both have birthdays, but I've forgotten whose is on which day. So is yours today? Whenever it is I hope it's a very happy one. Did you ever have that talk with Gary about a certain possible birthday gift???

I'm rereading the books right now (waited until now so that they were nice and fresh when the movie did come out. Thing is trying to decide if I'm going as soon as it comes out, or waiting until it's at the $3 movie house. It usually only takes a couple months before they have the best films there!

They're the happy tears! Matter of fact, I'm gonna go spend some today! Been trying to get Math worksheets done the last couple days so I haven't spent any yet, but been building my cart! Thanks again!

Actually, my BD is today! Yeah, I'm officially one year older! Of course, next year is the biggie! Next year I celebrate 10 years with DH and then 2 days later get to celebrate my 50th! Hard to believe it's that close!
Rene - I didn't realize that you and I had BDs so close! I will have to remember to celebrate for you Sunday!
I think tonight will be pretty quiet! DH actually remembered and got me a card and gave it to me this morning. We'll do the cake tomorrow so that the kids can help him make it. Photography class has been moved to Saturdays so that's not tonight either. We missed last week because the teacher hurt his back and ended up in the ER (not bad as it turned out, but he was hurting enough to not want to stand around and teach). So, no big plans, but maybe some scrapping if I can!

Oh no, we gots Gangsta Gundi Girls!:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Chris, I hope you're having a better day today. Are the antibiotics helping yet?
DD has been home today, but no fever, just headache, sore throat and very congested. She's not going to the football game tonight, but I may have to go up there before the game. I haven't found anybody to handle uniforms for me. Not that there's much to handle. The newspaper lady emailed me. She was writing up our competition results for the paper and asked if it was okay to use one of my pictures again. Hmmm... let me think about that... YES!
Anybody have exciting weekend plans? Game for you Rene? DS has a swim meet in the morning and after that NOTHING!! Yippee!!!!
wahoo about the pics and bummer about your dd. Hope she is doing better soon. I didn't know you guys did swimming! Wow I have 3 in it and what a shocker, I thought when I signed them up, oh swimming how expensive can it be, buy a swim suit....... um no!
Thanks for the blog freebie, it's super cute and will work great with heritage layouts, me thinks!
Get some rest this weekend and get all better!!!! Maybe McLovin can bring you home some chicken soup. :)
I will text him and tell him you said so.
My savior - even if it's a day late! I'm writing it down so I don't forget again!!!!!
actually I posted yesterday, you just didn't come back to check LOL
Well, Happy birthday on Sunday then :D
I'll be listening for the hysterical screaming. DS is going with a friend to see Cirque de Freak. It looks kinda creepy but pretty funny. I haven't been to the movies in so long. I don't even know what's out. I had to look up Cirque de Freak and watch the trailer before I gave him permission to go.
Chris, I saw your blog freebie here and downloaded it before I went to your blog, and it wasn't even on the blog yet. I love it and will be using it on my next LO for sure! I hope the antibiotics and nap will do you good and that you wake up feeling better.
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
No! That wasn't it! I wanted the CTRL + J one! I didn't want to Alt + drag because I needed like 8 copies of the same layer!
glad you got the one you wanted but I don't think you are understanding the power of the ctrl+alt+t etc. or maybe I don't understand what you are trying to do. but if you want to have a line and then you want to have a 2nd line an inch down, then a 3rd, then a 4th etc, if you do it with transform, after you do the ctrl+alt+t and move it down an inch, you can just put your fingers on ctrl+alt+shift and keep hitting t, every time you do you will get another line 1 inch below the previous one. It is a SUPER quick way to make duplicates that are perfectly spaced. Works great like if you are making a brad line, take the first brad, ctrl+alt+t, move it down so far, then just repeat, repeat, repeat with ctrl+alt+shift+t and in seconds you will have a 12 inch row

Thanks guys, but don't be too excited about the photos in the paper. It's a really small paper!
Yep, Chris, I have swimmers! DD has been swimming summer league since she was 9. She is an excellent butterflyer. She is on the high school team too. In her freshman year she won the leadership award, sophomore year she won MVP and this year she is the team captain. I don't remember when DS started, maybe 7 or 8. He has done summer league and now does a fall and spring league that last 2 months. We tried year round a couple of years ago but it was just too much. He is doing very well. He is not a very coordinated kid (got that from me I'm afraid) so he's not a natural athlete. Swimming has been a blessing because it's given him something he can do well in.

Hmmm.... If they were all going the same distance, yep, this would have been my chosen shortcut. But the only thing they had in common was that they were lines to show the kids where to write. (not exactly what Adobe had in mind when they created PS, but making math worksheets is another thing it can do! And since I needed all these perfect sized squares to do it with........)

Good morning girls, and happy Saturday to everyone!!!
Happy Birthday Lisa!!! Hope you have a great b-day!!! My non-DSP BFF's () a b-day is today. She's a year younger than me, but I always tell everyone she's a year older than me. She for some reason doesn't think that's quite as funny as I do!
Yay Shana for having your fabulous layout spotlighted on Chris' blog. I love military layouts.!!!
Sands, sorry you are still not feeling well. Hope you and Chris feel better super soon!!! Chris did you get that chicken soup?
I had a great day yesterday. I spent most of it with Gary getting ready for the tailgate, then Drew met us for my early b-day dinner at my fav Mexican food restaurant where I proceeded to eat too much. The gilrls are coming over tomorrow evening. The movie was not near as scary as I was afraid it would be. A couple of moments made me scream, but it was bearable.
We enjoyed Drew at dinner so much. He and Gary's relationship seems to be getting stronger since they are together at work everyday. They have always gotten along, but had never been real close. So now they have all these "inside work jokes" and tease each other constantly. It warms my heart since he doesn't have a relationship with his own dad. He cracked us both up when he said "Wow, after working till midnight all those days, these normal 9 to 5 days go by so fast!"

Aww!! Sorry I didn't know about it! As I'm celebrating more today than yesterday, I slept in to almost 8 AM (something I never do!) and then spent quite a long time over breakfast (hot cinnamon rolls and coffee), chatting with DH and reading a little! We don't have power problems here Heather, you should move next to meeeeeeeee! I promise to be a good neighbor :D I am not a lot of help cuz I pretty much went from nursing to a cup. What I would suggest is really play the big boy card. Is he only needing it at night? If not maybe say bottles are only for night time cuz you are a big boy now and maybe only for water. I think if you slowly decrease frequency and maybe switch to water in it, that might decrease his attachment to it and esp no milk at bedtime would be better for his teeth. Oh where is Carolyn, I bet she would chime in on his teeth thing.

I'm having a great day so far!!! I went to a church today that I had never been to before. Tim Lehaye was preaching. It was so great. The church is bigger than what I truly want, but I haven't been able to find a small Southern Baptist church in this town. They are all large churches. I think this one has possibilities.
Guess what Drew got me for my b-day? A DSP GIFT CERTIFICATE!!!!! Does he know his mom or what?

MILK IN A BEDTIME BOTTLE IS A HUGE HUGE NO NO !!! it can cause SEVERE decay of the teeth ! WATER ONLY at bedtime ! I'm not help with the weaning thing, as all three of my kids were on sippy cups by 9 months. Once they get into the "habit" of bringing it to bed, it's rough to break... we never had pacifiers here either for 2 reasons... it creates a habit that you will only need to break later and... vigorous pacifier use can/does cause dental deformities of the jaw, particularly the upper jaw. Same as the thumb !

The judging for the grand prize is done by a panel of judges.... so individual voting won't do much for that.. it will only get ME stuff...I misread the rules! But the offer still stands... should I luck out and win, the camera is yours !
But, I did look over some of the entries and I have a decent chance so far... believe it or not, there are some more VIVID than mine and they are very good.

Paci's were strictly a bed time thing after about 3 months (they didn't really want them other than that. They broke themselves just a little over a year. Bottles were only given when being held, never, ever were they holding them themselves except in our laps. Guess that is what made it so much easier to wean them when it was time. DD held onto her paci longer than the boy's, but even she just gave it up one day. Big difference with her is that the paci lasted longer than the boys and was something she would look for and use during the day. All three were off paci's and bottles well before 2 years though!

I knew you would have an opinion on this one, Carolyn. :) The funny thing about the pacifier is my dd2, had one until she was about 10 months or so, got it down to only at nap time, then took it away and she was FINE for a month. Then one day she started sucking her thumb!!! Totally out of the blue, and I could NOT get her to quit, tried giving back the pacifier but if that wasn't handy in went the thumb. It was such an ingrained habit that she didn't stop until she was like NINE!! She didn't even know she was doing it, she would say mom, I haven't sucked my thumb all day and I would look at her like she was crazy cuz she had been doing it like 10 minutes before. The only thing that finally broke her of it was sticking one of those pokey things in the roof of her mouth and we didn't just do the little tiny pokey things, this thing was wicked looking, but once it went in, she never even tried. I wish we would have done it a year or two earlier, but I kept hoping she would quit on her own, cuz it looks horrible, but we finally had to cuz her jaw was getting so out of line. Now she and dd1 both got braces at the same time and she still has them cuz they are having to fix her jaw. She doesn't dare complain much though cuz she knows she will get NO sympathy from this quarter cuz I warned her, begged, pleaded, offered rewards, NOTHING worked!!!
I had trouble finding it, but here's the link: http://weatherphotocontest.com/bin/Rate?image_id=1008403036

Thanks! Of course there was a bit of comment because of the subject (can't be helped when you take a pic of a bottle of wine then show it to a room full of Mormons!)
007: Love you any way Chris! You know that, right?
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
I admire you! No coffee, no wine, and probably the best behaved kids I've ever met! At least all the LDSers I know are that way!
Just come to my house and you'll see the other side of mormon kids!
absolutely! I would hate to be the ONLY mean mom out there. :D Alas none of my children's friends EVER have to deal with such mean parents. Don't you really feel bad for my offspring that they have been so greatly burdened at such a young age? sniff sniff. ;)
I mean too, they lost a lot of toys just yesterday because they won't keep their room clean. Talk about drama I bet my 9 year old used a box of tissue over this!

I usually sit at the computer and catch up online with a cup of coffee in the morning after the kids leave for school. I had promised myself that this morning I was going to finish up a LO I was working on last night instead of spending my coffee time online. Well, lets just say I broke that promise! But that's okay, cuz I had fun trick or treating and got some really great non-fattening treats! MISTRESS CHRISTINE !!!
I remeber reading a question you had somewhere back there about a lens.......
you have an 50mm f1/8 and the 18-200 VR.. correct?
Technically speaking, you have a wide angle covered with the shorter focal range of 18..
my super wide is a 12-24... so your's is pretty close.
the 50 is a "normal" lens (sees much the same as the human eye, hence "normal" ) and is a very nice portrait lens on it's own. The CLASSIC portrait lens is the 85mm.. http://www.adorama.com/NK8518AFDU.html?searchinfo=85mm+mikon
Also a nice lens that is actually a macro lens is the 105mm..http://www.adorama.com/NK10528AFVRU.html?searchinfo=105mm+nikon this lens has a focus limiter switch will prevent it from close (macro) focusing, thus making it an excellent portrait lens with a bit more reach.. another alternative to this particular lens is the Tokina 100mm lens. http://www.adorama.com/TN100PNKAF.html I have 2 Tokina lenses and have very please with the build quality, smooth mechanics and wonderful optics.. as well as the significant price difference.
The next question is... kids, moving targets, low light..... longer reach and handheld ???? now you are talking about a fixed aperture telezoom! Your 18-200 just seems too short and too slow to focus sometimes especially when zoomed all the way out??? Remember, todays lenses focus rate is as if the lens itself is WIDE OPEN! So, with a variable aperture lens zoomed all the way out, the lens will focus as fast as it's smallest possible aperture (5.6 in this case) allowed by the lens.... and if that is not fast enough, then you are looking at something with a fixed aperture along the entire focal range.. ( clear as mud???,, hmmmmmmmmmm thought so LOL ) Now , you are talking some serious cash and WEIGHT!!!!! http://www.adorama.com/NK200400AFSU.html?searchinfo=nikkor+lenses Yes, I threw that in there to see if you would choke ! Did it work? Anyway, the 80-400 has a variable aperture as well and has VR.. but you are still talking WEIGHT.. If you read any of the reviews, you will see it recommended the use of a monopod at the least...
I have a 70-300 variable aperture lens.. an old Sigma which cost about $150 over 3 years ago... It's diffucult to hand hold due to the weight, especially since I have trouble with carpal tunnel in the wrists... but it does take decent shots. That autumn tree I posted a few pages back was taken with that lens on a tripod. It is NOT a fast focus lens at all...but it produces decent images when mounted !
So without spending your DH's ENTIRE PAYCHECKS FOR A MONTH... you need to make some choices... pretty much keep what you have and for the action shots you'll need to run in closer (LOL.. been there, done that) or make a firm decision as to what type of specific photography you want to spend the money on... If you think the investment on a lens for portraiture will earn you some cash, get a lens specifically for that ! And use the 18-200 as your all purpose walk about lens ( it DOES give you the most focal range in one lens ! )
Or sell the 18-200 and buy a telezoom with a fixed aperture and more range. But remember, there's weight in the lens and lightness to the wallet ! And some less convenience as you'll need to use a monopod/tripod...
It's not an easy decision simply because we want to have the right lens for everything and every situation ! Unless you are rich, it's just not reasonable.
to give you an idea.. my walkaround lens is the Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8.
SUPER WIDE: tokina 12-24 f/2.8
STREET ZOOM: Sigma 28-70 f/2.8-4
TELEZOOM: Sigma 70-300 f/3.5-5.6
PRIME: Nikon 50mm f/1.8
and soon to be finding a home in the bag..NIKON 10.5 fisheye... (yes, I broke down and ordered the dang thing ! ) http://www.adorama.com/NK105DXR.html
yes, I look for refurbished... and have never had an issue. ! And saves a few bucks. I'm cheap !
Don't know if any of that is of any help. Maybe just muddied the waters??
But I do know that at the bottom is where you want to go with your photography and spend the money there- especially if you plan on getting a return for your investment !

Well, I did admit that I had a little help with "what to photograph"! This week it's a couple shots of the shower in action I think. Want to see what I can get with slow vs fast shutter speeds. Plus there were a couple of ideas that I could do if I can con DH into driving while I take night shots! (will have to do that Thursday as we can have a 'no-school' Friday and keep the kids up a little late!) Actually, you can just stand in front of your garage, focus on the house across the street and have DH drive past you with his lights on while you trip the shutter. Your shutter speed should be slow enough if you are focusing on a darker area... and the lights should appear as streaks but the vehicle should not be clearly visible.. maybe ghosted at most. It's going to be a longer exposure so you may need either your tripod or a prop of some kind.
hand holding your camera while a passenger in a car is a form of panning as well.
spiinning is another fun thing to do.. set your shutter speed at 2.5. focus on a single leaf but with others nearby... ( actually, you can use a colorful group of anything, they just need to be a bit spaced) then as you trip the shutter, spin the camera in a circular motion.. just like a quick turn of the wrist..try not to move it up or down but keep the center still and rotate..

Lisa... do you know about sparklebox.com? They have some great flash cards ready made on the site and its free :D. You can choose themes for the cards too, like flowers, rockets, marine creatures... really cool!
Our trip to France/England is at the end of November, so still time to get 100% better. Although, DH has gone down with it today. So my guess is that its going to go through the family. Have no idea where I got it from, as I have not been in contact with anyone that has had it. Even when shopping all our shops have hand sanitizer at the entrances, which I use and rub all over the handle of the shopping cart that I use. Then when we get back in the car we have hand sanitizer in the car to clean our hands again. So I really have no idea how I got it.

OK I have to tell you all my story about how I was a horrible hostess. So as you may all know, last January, Sands and Crys came and stayed with me. RV'n Frannie was supposed to come too. Well I talked to her and Sands initially and told them both that I do not own a coffee maker, have no clue about making coffee, nor do I have any coffee anywhere on the premesis, not that I would have banned it from the house, just don't be expecting me to know anything about it. (I have literally NEVER made coffee, I wouldn't have the first clue) They both assured me that they weren't big coffee drinkers and if they really wanted one they would go to Starbucks or something. So I was like ok. Well then Crys found out she could come and Fran ended up staying downtown w/ some of the other ladies. Somehow it got in my head that it was Sands and CRYS that weren't big coffee drinkers etc etc, so I didn't even think one more thing about it. So Crys was at my house for about 4 days before she finally says something about going into withdrawals and how she HAS to find a coffee house. And apparently Sands knew and I was just being totally clueless! But I did make lots of sweets while they were here and Crys you still love me right? :D (I even shared my peppermint ice cream, I think)

Ideally I would LOVE to take some portraits for hire sort of thing, especially natural light, outdoors style pictures. So with what I have currently, which lens should I be using? and would the 105 be a better option? or should I get the 85. ugggggh! you are right, I want a lens that does it all. The other big thing that bugs is w/ my 50mm 1.8 (is that considered a macro?) I can't get in as close as I want to, cuz then it won't focus. So which one will let me get in tight w/ shallow depth of field AND be a super outdoor, natural light portrait kind of lens. And no, DON'T be showing me any more of those $6000+ ones, I literally gasped out loud when I saw that and that was after thinking ok this is going to be an expensive one from being forewarned. I literally was thinking like $1-2K. Oh yeah and a couple of other things I want in my ideal lens. I want to be able to zoom more than the 200 and I don't want to spend very much.

oh just thought of another question, so are there fixed telezoom lenses that aren't a gazillion dollars but still take great pics? Is it the fixed aperture that makes that one so expensive?

yes you are right on which lenses I have, plus I forgot to say I also have the 18-55mm lens. I could have just gotten the big boy, but it was only like $40 difference and I thought oh well it will be lighter and I can put it on when I want to go out doing lots of walking etc cuz it will be lighter. I don't think I have even taken more than maybe 30 pictures with it. Ideally I would LOVE to take some portraits for hire sort of thing, especially natural light, outdoors style pictures. So with what I have currently, which lens should I be using? Outdoors, with decent natural light any one of your current lenses woud work.. It's when you get into the less than ideal light is wheree ANYONE has trouble. and would the 105 be a better option? or should I get the 85.85 just ahs a bit more distanceto it than the 60... the 105 is a true macro lens... meaning it reporduces an image life size... the focus limiter weitch tunrs off the or limits the lenses ability to close focus making it an excllent 105mm portrait lens as well. Using the 105 as its intedended macro will allow the lens to focus as close as 12 inches from the subject. ugggggh! you are right, I want a lens that does it all. The other big thing that bugs is w/ my 50mm 1.8 (is that considered a macro?) I can't get in as close as I want to, cuz then it won't focus. So which one will let me get in tight w/ shallow depth of field AND be a super outdoor, natural light portrait kind of lens.Probably the 105... And no, DON'T be showing me any more of those $6000+ ones, I literally gasped out loud when I saw that and that was after thinking ok this is going to be an expensive one from being forewarned. I literally was thinking like $1-2K.I only added that in to see if you would soil yourself... if all you did was gasp, then I failed at my mission!:rofl::rofl:In all honesty, I added that one not only to make you cringe, but because it was the only one I could find that gave you more reach over your current top end of 200 WITHOUT duplicating any focal lengths you currently have. Oh yeah and a couple of other things I want in my ideal lens. I want to be able to zoom more than the 200 and I don't want to spend very much.
I have found that to be an impossible search ! It's either less expensive with variable aperture or very expensive with fixed aperture. You just can't have it both ways !
And don't forget, if you are dong portraiture, then you will usually ONLY be shooting in reasonable light ! No one wants pictures in the dark...
Another suggestion would be to pick up an external flash. You can use the flash off camera by either a hot shoe cord or a pocket wizard (unless your camera can work as a "COMMANDER" in which case it can fire the flash by infared) In either case, you would always be able to bounce the flash into either a small umbrella or a reflector to make the lighting a bit more controlled or substantial.....

oh yeah and Carolyn, so what does like say the 85 give me over using the 85 focal length on my 18-200. I know it must have one. LOLthe prime 85 is a fixed aperture lens, and the 85 on your zoom is not ! 85 mm is the same "distance" on either. Prime lenes are very simple lenes which produce an exceptionally sharp image from edge to edge. With the zoom lenses, there is sometimes a bit of softness at the edges of the image...

I have a Speedlight SB 600, but I don't really know when to use it or how to use it, although I keep pretending. I know that it can be used off the camera as well as on, although I wouldn't know how or when again. So sounds like the 105 is the best option for what I am looking for?

I am looking at the Tokina 100mm lens vs the 105mm Nikon. Gosh half the price, so you think they are pretty comparable? or is the Nikon really $500 better?

So sounds like the 105 is the best option for what I am looking for? for what you are looking to do with regards to portraiture---- yes... either the Nikon 105 or the Tokina 100.. both are fixed aperture at f/2.8, both are true macro lenses, and both have a limiter switch which will take them from macro to portrait lens. read all the reviews for both and see what you think.. if you have a camera store in your area, it will be well worth your time to seek information there as well. Some stores have demo models which you can try on your camera. Either way, it's a significant investment so you want to be well informed and comfortable with your choice. Some camera stores also offer rentals on either a daly or weekly basis.. this may be a good option as well. Rather spend 50 bucks to rent, try it out and see if it's what you want rater than make a choice you are not happy with.

Honestly, I don't see any discernible difference. But i am not a lens snob either.. die hard Nikonians will swear there is a tremendous difference... but I don't see it. Tokina was started by Nikon engineers. the glass for both is made by Hoya which is the largest maker of superior scientific glass in the world...
It may only be worth the 500 in resale value should you decide to sell it. Nikon really does hold it's value becuase of the name.

NO, you are not going mental.. I did change it because i had made a mistake.. the closest focusing distance for the 105 is 12 inches...(the 3-4 inches is for the fisheye...I had that one up in another window. OOOPSSSSSSSSSSS) SORRY !

Bryan came by and looked at both and mentioned how sharp both the images were...... hmmmmmmmmmmm that was a pricey difference for that lens too.

probably because I am the queen of TMI... too many numbers, letters, and gobbledeegook... lol
No I doubt it, its just my brain. It seems to go that way when I'm trying to learn something :)
:think: I don't remember you giving Crys or I any peppermint icecream!:think: Crys???

I'm a tad PO'd!!!!
Remember my camera is in with the Canon Service Centre here. Well they've apparently found a problem with the Mirror Box. If I can produce the Middle East Warranty Card, then it can be repaired under warranty with no problems.
So I came home and searched and searched and searched. Its so unlike me to lose anything like this. I found the one that belongs to my 350D, but not the one that belongs to my 50D. So I call up the place that I bought it from, and they are giving me the story that they cannot give me a duplicate warranty card, but I should bring the camera in and they will organise for it to get repaired. But..... if it requires parts, then I have to pay for the part, but not the service.
So I call the Canon Service Centre back and tell them what the store said, and the guy at the service centre tells me this: The reason why they are asking for the warranty card is because the serial number on the camera has not been registered as a Middle East Product! If it was registered for sale in the Middle East just proof of purchase would be ok. And like I said, if I could give them the Middle East Warranty card, they would repair it at no cost.
The more I think about what the woman at the store told me the more I am thinking that the camera is a "pirate" camera as such. Hence the reason why she's saying I would need to pay for the parts!
To repair the camera without the Middle East Warranty Card is going to cost me at least $260.

To repair the camera without the Middle East Warranty Card is going to cost me at least $260. if you bought that camera in a physical store, it should have been marked if it was a "grey market" item. You find this a great deal in online stores, but I've never heard of it in a regular store. Grey market items a the exact same as non-grey market, but the difference being with warranty issues. .......GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RR !!!!

Just spring the $6000.00 lens on him first.. and then the others will look more attractive ! LOL
re flash: I typically use rear curtain sync.. keep the flash on TTL ( through the lens metering) and bounce it off something (white ceiling, light colored wall, my reflector, an aluminum covered cookie sheet.....whatever I have handy basically) and let the camera/flash combo make the choices. My only choice is what direction to bounce the flash... I too am in my infancy of learning flash stuff.. so sorry not much help here !

And now I know your next question will be "Why rear curtain sync?"... simply because the flash will fire at the END of the exposure rather than at the beginning.... allowing the camera/flash combo to allow for more ambient light and then the flash to fill in the rest up to the flash sync speed. Flash sync speed is the max shutter speed your flash will synchronize with for proper exposure.. Many cameras' max flash sync speed is 1/125 and in some cases/models up to 1/250. After that speed, the flash becomes less effective.

Holy cow, I wish I could keep up with you on all this camera talk! I have been meaning to ask a ? about the lense I bought. I try to use manual most of the time, but I get a lot of out of focus faces. Would this be because I am using a say f/2.8 and the lense is focusing on something else? Like I took a pic of my son and the leaves look great but his face is out of focus. How would I ensure I am getting good focused photos when they are throwing leaves in the air? I have been going back to auto just to make sure I have the pics come out good and it's annoying me. How do I know when to use shutter priority, ap priority or in manual? Did all that make sense? I am going to find a photo and put it up here so you can see and I'll give the specs!

Look in your user's manual, there is probably either a button or a menu setting that will change your auto focus, so something like matrix, center weighted or spot, probably the wrong words, but look in your manual and you will see.

I've never heard that little ditty, but wow! snow?!?! It's only October!
Sandy, that really stinks about your lens! I'm glad you're feeling ever so slightly not as bad. It's time you got all the way better though. I hope your kiddos don't get it. I liked your comment on my Fall Flair page and the answer is YES! you can come visit me anytime. I'll even make coffee for you!! Apart from that Chris is probably a better hostess. I don't know how to pull taffy. Sounds fun though. I remember doing it as a kid. Chris that was a funny story. I can just imagine your surprise finding out that Sands knew all along.
Carolyn, I love ya girl! I want to read all this camera talk and understand it but the brain just is too frazzle to take it in right now. I want to be Carolyn when I grow up :D Hey, Sands... How's the book?
I probably missed a lot. How's everybody doing today?

Actually, you can just stand in front of your garage, focus on the house across the street and have DH drive past you with his lights on while you trip the shutter.
I may try the spinning thing, but do you mean rotating the camera? Other than that, I have more ideas than I have assignment!
Thanks Heather and everyone else that has wished me better. Today is the first day in a week, that my head is cloudy, not fuzzy, my throat has embers not a raging fire and my head has a gentle ting ting of a triangle rather than a drum ;).
Yeah we have H1N1 here, but I think this is just the regular flu.
Lisa... do you know about sparklebox.com? They have some great flash cards ready made on the site and its free :D. You can choose themes for the cards too, like flowers, rockets, marine creatures... really cool!
That web site didn't work!:cry::cry: Could you PM me the actual link?
Our trip to France/England is at the end of November, so still time to get 100% better. Although, DH has gone down with it today. So my guess is that its going to go through the family. Have no idea where I got it from, as I have not been in contact with anyone that has had it. Even when shopping all our shops have hand sanitizer at the entrances, which I use and rub all over the handle of the shopping cart that I use. Then when we get back in the car we have hand sanitizer in the car to clean our hands again. So I really have no idea how I got it.
I sure hope it stops at DH so the kids aren't sick for the trip! With the timing it's gonna be close!
This cracks me up! :rofl::rofl::rofl:
I have a Speedlight SB 600, but I don't really know when to use it or how to use it, although I keep pretending. I know that it can be used off the camera as well as on, although I wouldn't know how or when again. So sounds like the 105 is the best option for what I am looking for?
This doesn't have to do with flash, but I got an extra lesson after last weekends class about lighting. He was teaching me to figure out where the lighting is in other peoples photo's by looking at the shadows. Of course, he was talking about studio stuff.
Where's the growling tiger smiley when you need it! The overseas market can be so tricky. Unlike in the U.S. where all that stuff "has" to be marked by law. I worked with a guy that had purchased a hebrew version of Windows only to find out it was totally pirated and not supportable. I sure hope you can get it taken care of without all the fuss!
Would this help eliminate red-eye too? According to Marco the "red-eye reduction" in camera's is a joke.
Noooooooooooooooo! I just looked out my window and what did I see? NOT popcorn popping on the apricot tree. Looks more like popcorn falling from the sky!
(Anybody besides Heather know what the heck I am talking about?)

Oh, I knew as soon as I read this! They thought we might have some this morning, but we didn't. At least not at sea level, the kids and I saw a couple cars that still had snow on them.

Me too! Wouldn't it be nice to just plug ourselves into her brain and be able to understand all this kind of like they did in Matrix where they just had to plug into the computer to learn stuff?

Thanks guys! Today didn't start out too good, when the health department kind of lied about when they would do flu shots, but that ended good because I got all the errands done and got home before noon. Since then, I have sat here waiting for the washing machine to be delivered! All we were told was "PM". And DH just called, a co-worker can bring him home, so I no longer have to stress about that!

I typed post about my DH earlier and when i hit submit the internet went out and I lost it. So here it is again... DH made bread today! I have been so busy in the shop lately, several big orders all at once. DH has suddenly gotten very good about asking what he can do to help. He came down to get lunch with/for me the past two days. I told him I would eat a salad everyday if he'd make it for me. He's been washing the dishes and "trying" to help with laundry (still needs help in that area) I asked if he wanted to learn to cook and he enthusiastically said yes. I like to make homemade rolls with the bread machine and there were just a couple left so he said I should teach him to make them. So I showed him how and he made bread! This is a big feat because the only thing he ever cooks is toast  I don't know what the aliens did with my real husband but I'm glad they left this one with me.:rofl:

Stitchie - this is for you. I have found when I'm trying to photograph 3 little boys, seldom do they all look in the camera's direction with cute little smiles on their faces! So..........I generally take LOTS of shots of whatever is going on. (So does their mom, and she's who took the pictures of the *Mud Fight*!) In the picture I used for the page, the two little ones had smiles on their faces and were mostly looking in the correct direction. The older boy was looking down at the younger two. So............I just lifted the head off another picture where he was looking in Mommy's direction and laid it over top the photo I was using. A little masking, a little blending, little cloning and voila! I have a cute picture with all three boys smiling and looking in the vicinity of the camera! Lots of times I just switch eyes; open ones for closed ones. ;)

I'm LMAO! If you teach him to make bread my way then we will really know the aliens got him! (I use the old fashioned, takes two days to grow starter, make dough, knead dough, bake bread method!) And I can't say that about my DH as he does about 60% of the cooking. I am doing more and more these days.

I absolutely need a shoulder to lean on today... and if you don't mind, I'm going to use yours..
Have any of you had to deal with your teenager being bullied by another teenager at school.....either in the classroom or on a sports team, or both? Have you ever had to listen to the bullying going on, every single day? It's not just my daughter being bullied by this one girl, but it's several girls feeling bullied by the same girl. These girls have come to me about it. A couple of their parents have come to me about it. A couple of the parents have gone to the coach about it. A couple of the players have gone to a few of the teachers about it. A couple of the players, in addition to ANOTHER sports coach, has gone to the principal about it. ...... and quite literally nothing... NOTHING has been done to stop it. NOTHING.
Well..... last night, I snapped. I'm absolutely and totally ashamed of myself. Im embarrassed for my actions but I snapped. I found myself having witnessed the bully going off on my daughter and on another player, immediately following a game last night. I don't know what happen to me.... I became a totally different person than who I normally am. I'm normally very happy and very logical, and I always handle things the right way... the appropriate way. But not last night. Last night, I snapped. I do mean it when I say I snapped. I guess my head and my heart couldn't take it anymore. My "mother reaction" kicked in... and it was ugly. I wasn't vulgar in any way. But I admit, I was loud. I was the maddest I have ever been in my entire life.. and I absolutely mean that with all honesty. I was furious. I was just vocal, but then the girls dad, a big guy, came at me... and it was at that point that I was ready to go to blows with him. I'm not even like that!! But he's a big guy and he was charging at me, puffing his chest, telling me that all the girls are liars.
Now the girl is making veiled threats online. It's going to be ugly at school. That I know. My daughter is scared. My daughter is not mad at me, she says she was at a breaking point. She was giving it back to the girl when the girl would start on her, and I warned the principal that this was going on, and that I gave my daughter permission to give it right back, to not stand there and take it. But noone did anything to stop this situation from happening in the first place. The principal even admitted to me that she knows the girl is a brat (although she used other words). She said it's definantly not directed only at my daughter (which I already knew).
I can't fix my actions from last night, but I also know that had I just calmly gone to coach again... nothing would be done about it... again. Maybe now that they can see the situation is serious, maybe now they'll take notice and do something?
Anyways... thanks for listening.

Oh no, Laura. This sounds like a really bad situation. I can't believe nothing has been done about it yet if everybody knows it's going on. I wouldn't beat yourself up over your reaction. Like you said, it a Mom Reaction. It was bound to come to a head eventually. Maybe some good will come out of it and someone will take it seriously now. Do you think someone would pay attention if a large group of you all went in together to talk to the principal, coach, guidance counselor? I hope it gets resolved.
>>aruaL<<
10-28-2009, 08:09 AM
I don't know what to do at this point. We don't really have a guidance counselor, the sheriff said there is nothing he can do, not until "something criminal has been done", the principal hasn't done anything, the coach hasn't done anything. I'm sitting here sobbing, I don't even know how to help my daughter at this point.
I have a complete understanding now of how people "crack" and end up doing bad things... they wonder why kids crack and come to school and shoot others, shooting the bully and the staff and those around that did nothing to help... I understand it now. It's incredibly painful.

Oh Laura DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT. Especially if she is putting stuff on line that is threatening. I would start getting specifics written down and tell the principal that it will be taken care of or you are going to the district and/or the police. That is scary that it has gone on like this. That is exactly what precipitated Colombine. I totally hear u about mama bear coming out.

I have a complete journal of it all. I have printed the threats as well. Nobody cares.
My daughter is a very calm girl.. but for the past 7 hours, she's been raging. She hasn't even gone to bed yet. School starts in an hour and a half. I can't calm her down. She insistent on going to school and facing the girl and "her friends" (but she's also scared). She is crying and saying that noone is protecting her, that they are going to wait until the girl hurts my daughter and then they'll take notice. No child should ever have to feel this way.
