Heather - you would not survive in Homer Alaska! Many very nice homes there have outhouses because the water is just too bad! Either that, or you live with a water tank and have water delivered just like propane and other fuels.

Chilly is not the worst part! Many years ago, I lived in a cabin that had electricity, but no running water. The owner worked on the slope and was gone for a month at a time and didn't want to come back to frozen/broken pipes all the time. Any way, on my answering machine I joked that if I didn't answer I was probably just stuck in the outhouse waiting for the moose to go away! Well, needless to say, I changed it rather fast after I really did get stuck by a moose. And it got changed again after I got stuck for 3 hours waiting for the bear to leave! (Neither one was in winter, thankfully, but still...)

:rofl::rofl: You don't want to see him and his belly anymore!
Here's the thing that drives me crazy about him. At first he want to mess with them and get them all crazy and doesn't care about the million. And now he wants to win challenges and win the entire thing?!?!? What is he thinking, he's CRAZY!!
Rene, I like to have Christmas done by Thanksgiving too. It won't happen this year it might be the week before Christmas when I can get stuff. I already told the kids that they aren't getting much because of the hospital bills so hopefully they believe me. It really shouldn't be a big deal since we don't go overboard here, but they are getting older and the stuff they want is WAY more expensive.
It just makes me feel better when I know it's all done. I don't have as much shopping to do this year since we are taking them to NM for their main thing, but I need to get a few small gifts. I want to go to Old Navy this week and see if they have some scarves/gloves like Carolyn suggested to wrap the trip invite in. I want to get those early because that kind of thing always sells out if you wait too long. Other than that, I've really got to think about what to get. I am clueless. I don't buy the girls clothes, and Drew doesn't want them, although I was thinking of getting him a jacket. I don't know. Other than Gary and the kids though, I really don't have to buy much because I really don't have any family and on Gary's side we will probably do the Chinese Christmas thing again, so that makes it easy. I just give the kids their money and make them buy their own to exchange. So I just worry about mine, and Gary picks his out. Easy peasy.

We are going to try to "lighten up" this Christmas. We've already warned the kids. My side of the family is pretty easy. We did an ornament exchange, dirty Santa style, last year which was really fun. DH's family not so easy. We have to buy for more people than necessary and the last couple of years we've had to do his mom's shopping for our kids. The shopping usually gets done in early December, but the wrapping usually happens on Christmas eve.

Yes, real outhouses! The one I had was really cute (in a way). It had a glass door! Very helpful in spotting the wildlife before they spotted me! Not sure where that bear was when I went to the outhouse, which scared me more than anything, but had seen the moose and thought "Gee, I hope she goes the other way, I don't really want to be stuck out here!" I just sat there and waited and they left soon enough!

DHs side is the easy ones! We don't do anything at all. Of course, this year we will have a party to go to since we are back where his Aunt lives. That will be nice. Looks like we won't have to cook for Thanksgiving either, at least not if his Dad and his wife come up as invited by my BIL.
And I think this year will only be my one nephew on my side since one has reached adulthood. It's gonna be a lean year that's for sure. And except for one or two toys, I think I may be pretty much done. I need to do a search and find some stuff I bought earlier this year for DD and then look at it all and make sure there's no holes. I even got all the stocking stuffers a couple weeks ago when I saw a bunch of $1 toys at Target.

Chris, ouch for your elbow pits (never heard them called that before :P) and yes, Shana, it would be SO nice to go to that magical place before aches and pains.
Sands, great news on your camera.
Rene, I hope Gary gets your treadmill moved but in the meantime try these jumping jacks with me :yippee::yippee::yippee::yippee::yippee::yippee:
Suvgal, sorry to hear about your heel. No jumping jacks for you. I hope it heals quickly.
Crys, YAY for you getting started with the tablet. I would say that the first thing will fix itself. I was skeptical for the first few days, but the more you use it the more control you get. As far as the "where" question, you have me stumped. I don't have much room on my desk either. I have mine on the right side of my keyboard. I have one of those pull out keyboard drawers too and I know they won't both fit in there. Could you boost you chair up so the side surfaces are at a better height? Or would it work to put the tablet in front of you and the keyboard to the side... probably not because you'd be twisting to type.
Hey everybody, head over to the October Lyrical Challenge and vote for Rene. She's got a great LO of Drew.
LOL well I could have said the anterior fossa of my elbow, but most of you would gone :confused::confused::confused::confused:

or what about getting a cushion like the kinds you put on kitchen chairs. Come see me and you can have my red one. I bought it when my tablet was up above cuz the height was killing me too and my chair didn't go up any more, but now that I swapped the keyboard and the tablet I don't use it ever.

I love Christmas parties!!! We will go to my DMIL's for Thanksgiving Day. She is a great cook!!! I bought a Paula Deen magazine the other day whilst waiting in the super duper long line at Walmart and it had this recipe for pumpkin cake with maple frosting in it, so I'm going to try that. I usually take the sweet potatoes, ham, and dessert. I don't know if anyone will eat the pumpkin cake, but it just sounds so yummy and Thanksgivingey. At Christmas, I'm just in charge of the desserts. So my kids always want me to bring rice krispy treats. I copied down Tina's recipe for Orea balls and red velvet balls so I'm going to try those, and then I always make my youngest stepdaughter's fav cake because her b-day is Dec 24th and that's the day we always celebrate Christmas with the kids because the girls are with their mom on Christmas Day, so I try to do something for her b-day too.
Now I'm in the holiday spirit!!! Talking about food always gets me there!

Ya'll go check the November 2PSC (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40910). Julia made a free QC from a LO by yours truly :D Come play along.
I am almost totally done. Since the kids all want expensive presents and they know that means fewer, I got most of them on a SUPER sale last weekend. Plus we are going to do a scaled down Christmas this year cuz we are helping my SIL who lost her job etc. I am afraid if the economy for her and/or my DSP income doesn't pick up (which I know is also due to the economy) I may have to go back to my real job more than 2 hours a week.

I'm going to have to see if I can catch up on you all a little later! I have been so busy with Halloween and kids. Oldest dd is sick and it's freaking me out! I knew it couldn't happen for long, for all of them to stay healthy, but geez, I wanted a month. :( I'm taking her to the doctor to see what she has since she says it's hard to breath and her throat hurts. I'm pretty sure we'll be walking out of there with "it's just a cold" since she's my drama queen and makes a big deal out of everything, but since Ethan was sick I want to really make sure it's nothing!
SO, I did it! Did anyone read what I was going to do today?????:think: I'm going to make you guess. HINT- It was a killer though!
Also I've been working out medical bills all morning. I was pretty upset when I got off the phone with the life flight place. I can make a small payment this month and next and then pay it off in January. I called to see if I could do that and they said that there is a 90 day payment plan and so that would be like $620 (that's not small) for the next 3 months. Or I can just wait until January and pay it all because that would be before the 90 days to go to collections! I was upset because what about the people who can't even do this? And if it were earlier in the year, I couldn't do it! I can get the money before it goes to collections but what about people who really have no options. She hardly gave me any others and I'm sure there is, but couldn't they work with ya a little more? That's my vent for the day!
I am guessing you will be joining me in being unable to use your arms? What size weights did you use?
Sorry about the med bills, those life flights are outrageously expensive!

(I'm not only jumping for joy, I'm exercising with you!)
WooHoo! First, if it really needs to be a straight line, hold your shift key just like you did with the mouse! Otherwise, I promise you will get used to moving it around without even looking.
As for location, you could put it in your lap when you are using it for scrapping (I do that if I'm extracting or something where I'm not using the keyboard much. It's also possible to place it slightly in front of the keyboard if you have a deep enough tray. Mine sits in front of the number pad unless I'm paying bills. It may take a little getting used to, but if you want it here I recommend putting it in the "left hand" position so that the cord goes out and around the keyboard instead of dragging over the top. And since you are still getting used to it anyway, why not just get used to the buttons on the right instead of left. Let us know what you figured out!
Got it open in my browser, will have to give it a try!
This is one part of our health care system that really sucks (sorry if the term offends)! Thankfully the Dr that did DH's surgery is being a bit more lenient. We thought we could pay them off by the end of November, but now that his car has died, we either pay the Dr or get it fixed. And all that in the middle of a job change which means we won't have as much actually coming in. You know how they usually are a paycheck behind! Plus we have both car and life insurance and a Cobra payment of $1000. Hope they keep being nice about it.
Any way, all that to say I'm sorry they are biting you that way! It seems to me, if you had just sent them what you could they would have waited until January to make problems about it anyway!
I would be surprised if you flat out said look this is really hard for us to pay, can we please pay this much here and that much there, you would think they would work w/ you.

But the one where your arms are straight out in front of you and pull them up to eye level, I can't even use 5's on that. I had to move down to the 3's  because I couldn't finish the 30 seconds.
wahoo I got back up, I will hang w/ Heather however and avoid the outhouses if at all possible. :D
Please hand with me on this one.
I worked out again today and it was harder than yesterday. I think because I already hurt so bad! I thought my legs would be in better shape than my arms, but maybe Ethan has helped keep my arms in shape, his 25 pounds being picked up all day is helping I guess!

Good morning girls!!! What is everyone up to today? I have been at the podiatrist for 3 hours this morning! Just now got home. I had both of my ingrown toenails cut out since I could tell they were gonna get bad again. Decided to just go ahead and get it over with so they would look normal before spring. I was so nervous about the numbing shots because everyone has said how painful they are, but no pain!!! He sprayed them with this cold spray and then took about 30 minutes to put the numbing med in. He said he has learned how, where and how fast to put the med in so that it doesn't hurt and it didn't! He said most doctors just don't have the knowledge or want to take the time. So now I just have to keep my feet up today and take some advil and tylenol and all is good. Yay!!! :yippee::yippee: He put that medicine on there so that they won't grow back.

Too true! ;)

Let us know what you figured out!...
Well....(she hates to admit)....I didn't know about the shift key in the first place! :o And mainly the straight line I was referring to was dragging the scroll bar down/up. Right now I have the keyboard sort of cocked at an angle and the tablet on the right side of it. Because I have this hum-dinger of a desk, the cord is NOT a factor because I just ran it up and over the top of the door that hides the tower and from behind the slide-out shelf. YAY me for thinking of this on my own! :p
or what about getting a cushion like the kinds you put on kitchen chairs. Come see me and you can have my red one. I bought it when my tablet was up above cuz the height was killing me too and my chair didn't go up any more, but now that I swapped the keyboard and the tablet I don't use it ever.
I really like the part about *come see me*! :D
What is "dirty Santa style"?
I'll be needing plumbed restrooms when I'm in Alaska next summer. I've done my share of peeing in the bushes while on camping trips. :D
I have a ton of beautiful Christmas decorations that take me a month to put out and three months (if I'm lucky) to put away. Therefore........since NO family comes to our house for Christmas, I no longer decorate. :( :( Bummer, huh? Because of our blended family and SO MANY people, several years ago we came up with the *18 and out* plan. No more gifts after you turn 18, Christmas or birthday. (At that time, we were buying for 20 people and then the grandkids started having kids and it was just getting ridiculous! It seemed as though we were only working to buy gifts! ) Even with that, we still have 8 great-grands and 7 grands who are under 18. And most of the great-grands we seldom see, so I've taken to giving them gift cards. This year we splurged on most of the grands at birthday time, so Christmas is going to be sparse.
You know, I don't think I have ever had a real Christmas tree, not even when I was a kid. I've thought about getting one, but have never done it....
Now, that is just sad, Rene. OK, new plan! When you start having grandkids (and you will!), you must institute a new tradition. Grandma and Grandpa take the family/ies out to pick out and cut their own Christmas trees. Afterwards, everyone comes back to Grandma and Grandpa's house for cookies and hot chocolate. This was always one of the most fun things about Christmas when my boys were growing up. The years where we actually hunted for a tree while it was snowing were by far the best!!! Something about picking out a tree in the snow is so Hallmarkish, even if you're only picking it out from a tree lot! :D
You're getting hungry and I'm getting all festive!

We have thought about that too with our kids, but Emily is still 16 (17 on Christmas Eve) so we will continue to do it for another couple of years. Then we have already told them it's going to stop and we will take a trip every year with all 3 kids and there will be no gifts. It just gets harder and harder to figure out what to get them once they are grown.

My grandparents (Mom's side) had 9 kids and all but one had multiple children, averaging at 4 kids per. Every year they bought each and every one of us something. Even after many of us were grown and married. The tradition only stopped when my Grandmother passed away as my Grandfather said it just wasn't the same to do it alone. I can't even count how many times I heard that this was their favorite thing to do - go shopping for all those little trinkets and toys.

Well, guys, you are not going to believe this, but last week hasn't stopped! It's so bad all I can do is laugh! The washer is still not usable (although DH told me to run a load and test it out). It is so out of balance that as the tub spins it rocks side to side even with a light load in it. The leak from the hose isn't too bad, but it's still there. Still waiting for the plumber to come back.
And yesterday DH said one of the dogs had some sort of accident. By the color I would have said diarrhea, but couldn't tell the way he'd cleaned it up. Well, I shampooed the hall and the area that was hit and moved on. Last night you could still see a dark spot and the area was still really wet. Just that one spot though which was really weird. Well, guess what - it wasn't the dogs! The fridge has developed some sort of leak and it's rust in the water making the stain! I think the landlord might just kick us out except that they knew all the appliances were starting to act up before we moved in.
So, who can share some good news and give me a happy face again!

I have good news! My kid hasn't been bullied for 4 entire school days now, 5 if we count today (she sent a text saying so far, so good)!! I guess it seems that I won't have to kill anyone after all.... LOL :-)
Christine, I hope things pick up for your SIL and for your DSP income as well!
Ohhh the tablet.... I *love love love* my tablet! I don't know how people live without one! I don't put mine right in front of me though like so many others have said they do. I have mine at the right of my keyboard, with my keyboard in front of me (slanted). I use my tablet with my right hand and my keyboard with my left for short cuts and what not.
I hope you have a great visit with the kiddies Crys!
That's sort of the way I have my tablet set up. But I'm still struggling. I do keep remembering, though, how *foreign* the mouse first felt...so...........I have an inkling that things could get better! :D
Hooray for no bullying!
  I know we'll have a great visit; it's been 5 weeks since we seen those two; 6 weeks since we've seen the other 4 and probably Thanksgiving before we see them. :( :(
Lisa I'm so sorry your week isn't any better this time around.
Crys, YAY for the grands!
Rene I'm glad your foot is better. Gotta love that numbing spray! I wish they had that when I had to have it done! LOL
Laura I'm so glad your DD isn't having problems so far.
So my great-uncle isn't doing too well again. He's home, but deteriorating fast. I don't think he has a lot longer. I'm hoping I can get down to Wilkes-Barre soon because I want to do an album for him of his old newspaper articles from his pro days like I did for his brother. I wish I had done it sooner, but I had to leave school right around the time I did the first one. I don't think he has much longer.
I'll keep him in my prayers, Shana.
Yep on lots of things and it even seems to have an ability to learn cuz now it capitalizes Crys for me.
Shana I hope u can get ur album done before he passes. Hugs!
That's because I'm special! :love3: :love3: :love3:

LOL on the costume and scary new avi, Shana.
I spent most of the evening being a good mom. For some reason I had to help 3 out of 4 kids w/ homework today and there was a LOT. Most of the time, they do it on their own w/o a problem but today they all needed help. Plus I actually made a dinner w/ more than one item. Amazing, huh? :D
And this would be the reason you were unavailable to help Crys, with a capital C, with her homework?     Oh well, I guess the kids do trump addled old women! :annoyed: :annoyed:

Been collecting quotes over a few days so beware ;)
And now for your daily dose of doggie humor brought to you by.....me:
http://ihasahotdog.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/cute-puppy-pictures-really-hotdog.jpg
Love this cutie pie!!!
How about trying to stike a deal with her. Something like *If you can wear it, you can keep it. If not, some other gorgeous little girl will get to wear it and she will think of you and your generosity every times she puts it on.* Try appealing to her charitable side. With toys, if she can't give them up, insist that she play with them for ½ an hour each day, until she gets to bored, she willingly give it up, again trying to appeal to her charitable side. So and so will SO enjoy playing with this because of you...etc...etc...
Thanks for the advice Crys. We chatted about this, this morning on the way to school and she agreed to allow the small clothes to go to other people, as long as she got the chance to say goodbye to them ;).
I just got back from the orthopedist....my Achilles tendon is healing but I will have to wear the big black boot for another month. Unfortunately the medical place I was sent to gave me the wrong boot...should have been up to my knee ... not short ... but since it's healing we'll stick with this boot for now.I was hoping to start walking again but that will have to wait.
Glad its healing Suv!
I'm taking her to the doctor to see what she has since she says it's hard to breath and her throat hurts. I'm pretty sure we'll be walking out of there with "it's just a cold" since she's my drama queen and makes a big deal out of everything, but since Ethan was sick I want to really make sure it's nothing!
How is your daughter today Heather? And on the Life Flight, does your medical insurance not cover that?
:shocked::yikes::rofl:
I am afraid if the economy for her and/or my DSP income doesn't pick up (which I know is also due to the economy) I may have to go back to my real job more than 2 hours a week.
:(:(:(
Good morning girls!!!
Wow, that really sounds ouch! Hope now that the injections have worn off they are still ok!
Well, guys, you are not going to believe this, but last week hasn't stopped! It's so bad all I can do is laugh!
:( Gees surely it has to come to an end soon!

So far so good. I had a bit of a problem getting comfortable last night since I'm a stomach sleeper, but other than that, no big deal. I'm having to walk on the outside edges of my feet. I'm guessing that's why he didn't really want to do both feet at the same time, but I convinced him to just go ahead and get it over with. :D I think it really helped that I sat in the recliner all day yesterday and kept them elevated. I could tell right away that they were going to hurt if I sat at the desk.

She just has a cold as I thought. I still have to get after her to cover her mouth though. Why is that so hard for kids? We have been using the hand sanitizer more now, so hopefully Ethan stays good.
Yes insurance has picked up the huge portion of it, but I still have to come up with almost $2000 so not just pocket change!!

argggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh... that was for Sandy... the place where she left her camera told her they shipped it out for repair at their expense... and I was wondering if they gave her a shipping invoice detailing ship to locations and tracking number. If they were selling gray market items without them being labeled as such, it makes me wonder exactly how honest they are ! And having printed documentation for ANYTHING involving an expensive item is worth having.. The camera serial number should be on there as well... and that is a highly NECESSARY piece of information needed to identify the camera !

How about DOF Queen for a name! The way this week is going, 'DOH"
would be more appropriate...
Density??? referring more to the sharpness of the subject and the different renderings in the background ?
You can get different DOF indoors, but it might be more difficult due to the flash UNLESS you can prevent your flash from firing....
He should let you fly ahead if you've really already done this !

Density - that each shot, even though taken at different fstops/shutter speeds, still contained the same amount of light density.
I'm putting the outdoor restriction on this because I don't have the kind of space to get the DOF with kids in the pics. Since this is where I really want to see how much DOF I can work into the pic with this camera, I'm taking it to the great outdoors.
And as for our weather, I will welcome snow as it should be accompanied by higher temps. It's been bitter cold for almost a week with temps into the teens and high winds! It's just been since late yesterday that the clouds started coming in. With as dark as it was at 3:30 this afternoon, I'm betting we finally get the snow they've been talking about.

Yes, I love them. I have 2. You can never frown for very long when you have a dachshund. They are just too funny.
I think they're really cute. My favourite though are Goldens. I used to show (Breed, Obedience and Carting), and work them in the field. My prize dog became the South African Carting Champion in 2003, and unfortunately we had to put him down 6 weeks later with Bone Marrow Cancer.
DH says, that if we can find a Dachsie here, then we can have a dog again. I've been avoiding having a big dog here since its not very dog friendly.
Sands - do you know when your camera will be back? Will it make it in time for your vacation?
I've avoided posting anymore news about my camera, as i thought the news was getting a bit boring now :), but :no: No date yet.... hoping by the 18th, but things work very differently in this place... so I'm not holding my breath! I will, however, be jumping up and down from the 18th onwards till I have it in my grubby hands.
pssst... look at my name. whaddya think? :D
Love it! Very creative and original!
By any chance, did they give you some type of shipping receipt proving they not only sent it, but containing a tracking number??? That might be handy to have just in case !
:yikes::shocked::yikes: No!!! Apparently the camera was personally delivered though.
argggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh... that was for Sandy... the place where she left her camera told her they shipped it out for repair at their expense... and I was wondering if they gave her a shipping invoice detailing ship to locations and tracking number.
The dealer that I bought the camera from is in Dubai (2.5 hours drive from us in the opposite direction to Muscat, also 2.5 hours drive from us). The service centre I took the camera too is a legitimate Canon Dealer here in Oman. The Dealer in Dubai, has contacted the Canon Service Centre in Dubai, where the camera is right now, and the last I heard, the parts had been ordered. The camera wasn't shipped there using a regular courier service but was personally delivered by one of the Canon Muscat Service Centre.
From my understanding, the Dealer that I bought the camera from is liaising with the Canon Service Centre in Dubai with regards to repairs costs etc. And the camera will either be shipped direct back to me, or back to the Canon Service Centre in Muscat for me to collect. I'll give them until Tuesday 10th to contact me. I must say the dealer is being really good about keeping me informed, so I'm feeling comfortable at the moment.
LOL love it!

My new camera arrived and now it's time to read the manual ..... as I've always used automatic .....hopefully I can understand what they are talking aboutAnd at the beginning with a new camera, Automatic is good as you get used to the new feel of it. Working in either Aperture or Shutter priority will allow you to set the aperture/shutter and the camera will adjust itself for a correct exposure. In Manual, you will set both using the in camera light meter ( which is that little thingie you see in the viewfinder +......0........-)Using the presets ( portrait, action, night shots, landscape etc) the camera will select the aperture, shutter, iso etc based on the availabel light reading. ( The camera will take the light reading the minute you depress the shutter button half way down.)
Don't stress about learning everything at once.. it's impossible... get comfortable with one thing at a time and work from there. As you USE the camera, and SEE the results, you will find your questions popping up !
The camera manuals are basically to show you WHERE to find the different controls but not necessarily how to USE them ! For that you would be better off searching for a book/web article/online site that explains the USAGE to satisfy your questions !
Welcome to the learning curve !!!

How do I know what I'm focusing on if there is more than one dot?I typically only use one focal point so it's the only one that appears. when I have it set for more than one, the focal points the camera selects will ALL appear.. the camera will always focus on the area of greatest contrast when using multiple points. ( my camera has up to 51 focal points available and that is just CRAZY! I ususally only use them when shooting action shots with the camera set to burst shooting. ) If your camera works in a similar fashion to mine, then the camera is focusing on EACH of those spots ! perhaps it is set for facial recognition...
I wish I could look through your viewfinder and then I could tell you exactly!

I actually have time to post this morning for a bit! Sorry I haven't been around much lately. My life seems to be more hectic now than ever before. Ironically, I quit work to take better care of myself and my family and have more time for myself, yet I now seem to have less time for myself!
We now have three dogs! Mac is still trying to adjust to having to more females in the house. Dan finally got his Corgi a couple of weeks ago and that's been the biggest source of my busy schedule lately. I've forgotten what it's like to have a puppy around! She seems like she has to be watched every second of the day (yeah, I am the one taking care of her....go figure!). I barely have enough time to focus on Mac's service dog training anymore! About the only thing I do for myself lately is the photography class that Lisa and I are taking. We have two more classes to go and I have learned more than I ever thought was possible for me to learn about photography! Funny thing is that I I know I still have a ton to learn! Hey, at least I understand about getting proper exposure and white balance now!
So after talking to Lisa last night I realized I needed to get my priorities back in order so I don't keep getting more overwhelmed and stressed. I told Dan after 5 p.m. I am going to let him take over doggie duty (which he kinda already does) but I am going to devote that time to DSP again! I'm also going to structure my day much better so that I can properly train both Mac and Sophie (Cassie is all Dan's responsibility!) and also divide my time between them and also doing my rescue work. We no longer foster since we have a full house, but I have taken over foster coordinating which is what takes up a good chunk of my time!
Thanks Lisa for helping me with remembering what's most important....me! Well, at least to putting back into perspective that if I don't take care of myself and make sure I am happy then everyone/dog suffers around me. Here's to hoping I don't go nuts this winter!

So you mean I need to put it on spot metering?
The metering and the focus points actually work together...and you should be able to set each separately as well. When you depress the shutter button half way down to autofocus, the camera will take a meter reading at the same time ..
If you have the meter set to spot metering, the camera will meter the light from the point of focus only !
if the camera is set to matrix ( NIKON term, not sure of the CANON term) the camera will meter the light with the heaviest weight given to the area surrounding the focal point.
If the camera is set to dynamic (NIKON term, again not sure what CANON uses) then the camera will meter the light throughout the ENTIRE frame.
I only use spot metering when there is a huge light contrast between my subject and the light.. ( taking picture of backlit person)
I use matrix most often....

I have evaluative, partial, spot and center metering. The center metering says it is weighted in the center and then averaged for the entire scene. Evaluative says the camera sets the esposure to fit the scene.

Carting (of which I'm an official Judge for ... where's the swollen chest smiley :D) is when the dog pulls a two wheeled card around an obstacle course. In the Lower Classes they are allowed to use any verbal comment with the dog on a leash, as long as they don't use the same word twice. For the more Senior classes, the dog is off leash and has no verbal commands or hand commands unless there is a change of direction. So the dog needs to heel at your side and walk through the course without any direction.
The Championship that my dog won had a few criteria which had to be met. One of which was that he already had to be a Carting Champion, i.e. having come first with a minimum of 95% under 5 Judges, to enter ;).
When I used to train my dogs while DD was still little, she used to sit in the cart while the dogs pulled her and I trained.

The one I saw, was running around in between guests feet at a friends house while we were there barbecuing! It was the size of a fist. I had an argument with one of the French Dudes there about whether it was a spider or an insect! It was VERY FAST. He very sarcastically said to me, a rule of thumb is.... insects have 6 legs and spiders 8 :rolleyes::rolleyes:. They eventually trapped it in a glass to settle the argument between us. And lo and behold it was a spider.... a camel spider! See.... Camel Spiders run on 6 legs holding their other two legs up in the air like antennae. He never did speak to me the rest of the night.
This friends house was right next door to a farm, so I'm guessing it came from the farm area. A few nights later, while driving through the farmland to get to our house (a short cut ;)) I saw one in the road in the headlights.

Wow, that's really interesting about the carting, and a very cute pic of your DD and dog too!
Do camels really eat camel spiders? Were the black ones you saw as big as the ones in the photo?
Not much is known about the camel spider, but if you google some more there are some stats on it. No they don't eat the camels ;).
Here is what Snopes has to say about them, since that exact pic was circulated during the Iraqi war.

OH... and I was just kidding about the camels eating the camel spiders , and no I don't really see rats right out my window, but like any other place, yes we have rats. We are more likely to see the goats and sheep running like stray cats around outside than a rat or camel spider ;)

Generally on the back of the camera , next to the LCD is a fairly large round "button" , the sides of which move up/down/left/right... (mine is to the right of the LCD.. and I think yours is the same...) THAT button is the rocker switch... YOU PROBABLY USE IT TO SCROLL THROUGH THE IMAGES YOU'VE TAKEN..
When focusing, you can move the focus points by means of that button so the point moves up/down/left/right... give it a try and see what happens.

That was interesting. It was good that it pointed out to look at the spider in relation to the sleeve so now it doesn't look as big as the man's leg! Nevertheless, I still don't want to see one.

About 2.5 years ago, we went back home for a visit. I used to have a Hyundai Terracan for a car, with material upholstery. We were gone for 3 weeks. When we got back a rat (about kitten size) had moved into my car! It chewed the upholstery, seat belts, cables etc! I think it did this cos the kids had over time spilt juice, chips etc in the car and it thought it was food. The worst thing was, that it stayed in the car, even when I was using it! So we eventually set a glue trap for it to capture it.
Since I have my new car, I don't allow any food in my car.... only water ;) and on our last trip back home we didn't have any squatters at all.

I'm not as afraid of spiders as some other things like frogs. Usually if I see a big spider at the house, I will just put a bowl over the top of him until someone gets home to get rid of it, but mostly because I can't deal with the whole squishing it in your hand with a kleenex thing. That grosses me out. :D

I need to get to work. I left early this morning to go to the grocery store, make deliveries and get a haircut. No so sure about the haircut. I finally decided to get it cut short but it did NOT turn out like I was hoping. Oh well, it's just hair. It'll grow back. I have to bake pies and a cake this afternoon. Our church has a BBQ twice a year and tomorrow is the big day. I'll be serving. We serve about 4000 plates and it's the best BBQ. Then on Saturday we're working at the NC State game. It's homecoming so it should be a busy one. Then on Sunday I am going to be LAZY!

I can't catch up on all that! You chatty ladies. :) I was eating my nice lunch and saw a pic of a HUGE leggy spider and I HATE spiders, lunch wasn't so good anymore!
I can't seem to catch up on life. My sister who was getting married back in September is now getting married next weekend (2 weeks to get it all done) because she is pregnant. So I have been getting the invites fixed up for the 3rd time, taking her bridals today :help::help::help: and trying to keep up with my kids schedules.
I also wonder if since Ethan being in the hospital and now not being able to get out and go on with life as normal, cause I can't take him out, I wonder if I'm a bit depressed!?! I just want to get on with life as usual, but I can't. I keep telling myself I'm being selfish and I have to keep Ethan good, but it's so hard! I scrapped a page yesterday with Chris's new kit, but I didn't do it justice so it's just sitting on my hard drive. I might just have to start over.
I hope you all have a good day and wish me luck on her pics, I'm totally freaking out!

At least on the Canon P&S it's referred to as Evaluative = it takes account of everything in the viewfinder and adjusts based on the "average", Center weighted = it eliminates anything on the outer fringe and assumes that the focal points are in the middle then applies the same algorithms, or Spot Metering = takes the reading based on where you point the spot/dot that you see while metering. This is for your light metering not focus! I'm still learning what the autofocus does and how to get it focused where I want. (Marco promised to teach us to override the camera on the autofocus so that what we wanted is the in focus item, not what the camera assumes we want!)
See - I am learning in this class!:lol::lol:

Which camera do you have? Do you know how to change from one type of focus to another in your menu, or can you do it on the fly?please remember there is a difference between selecting the METERING method and SELECTING THE FOCUS POINT !!! Some cameras will allow you to change either on the fly while some make you go through menus ! Ususally selecting the focus point is on the fly tho..
Once you have chosen the method you want the camera to meter the light wth, and you have selected the focus point according to where you are olacing your subject within the frame , the camera will meter the light when you depress the shutter release button half way....
Depressing the shutter release button will not only focus the image, but meter the light at the same time !

Right! You really have to use the menu for both on mine, but the focus is much deeper in the menu than the metering. That's why I asked about her model too! I was thinking since it's an SLR that it wouldn't be buried so deep.

If I could step away from the computer for awhile, I could take more photos.:rofl::rofl: But I am FOR SURE taking some this weekend.

I would be happy if I could figure out how I want the picture to look before I have to take the picture! :lol:that will happen sooner than you think.. as you look at something, you already know or have an idea in your mind if you want a shallow or a deeper depth of field...it's just a matter of RECOGNIZING that you already know ! ( another clear as mud comment)
Of course, I now have Kristie asking me how to do this weeks homework! I was supposed to go help her tonight, but she is now getting sick! Don't need to be exposed to that! (almost hope we get another postponement on the class if there are going to be sickies in the room!)
Now I have to go unload my camera and see if I got DOF on any of my shots from this morning! You would be so proud, I worked totally on manual today! (except focus of course, which I totally suck at in manual and always will )think of maual focus as something to use if you are going macro or close up... My eyes are not great either and find that the camera will focus faster and better than I will EXCEPT on macro/closeup stuff... but doing either macro/closeup, the subject is stationary giving me all the time in the world to dither ! And because I'm tripod mounted, I don't need to worry about camera shake so I'm pretty hands free.

I can't catch up on all that! You chatty ladies. :) I was eating my nice lunch and saw a pic of a HUGE leggy spider and I HATE spiders, lunch wasn't so good anymore! :no:be thankful the spider was only a pic and not something crawling along the floor !
I can't seem to catch up on life. My sister who was getting married back in September is now getting married next weekend (2 weeks to get it all done) because she is pregnant. So I have been getting the invites fixed up for the 3rd time, taking her bridals today :help::help::help: and trying to keep up with my kids schedules. it will all work out ! Take the pics, deal with kids and then do the invites after kids are in bed... If you need any help post processing any of the pics, send them to me and I'll do it for you... just drop the ones you want touched up into a zip file and send them to me via YOUSENDIT.. a free service by the way...send to mamamolar@cox.net.. and I'll have them back to you within 24 hours...( that is called delegating duties ! LOL)
I also wonder if since Ethan being in the hospital and now not being able to get out and go on with life as normal, cause I can't take him out, I wonder if I'm a bit depressed!?! Oh yeah... being housebound and still totally anxiety ridden over Ethan??? I just want to get on with life as usual, but I can't. I keep telling myself I'm being selfish and I have to keep Ethan good, but it's so hard! I scrapped a page yesterday with Chris's new kit, but I didn't do it justice so it's just sitting on my hard drive. I might just have to start over. and save that for later as well...
I hope you all have a good day and wish me luck on her pics, I'm totally freaking out!You will do fine on the pics... and things WILL sort themselves out.. but a wedding is a fun event so it will be something to look forward to !

I'm afraid with my eyesight I never can manual focus! It's not an actual dead spot, but it's close! The only way I see "clearly" is with one eye and you know how "clear" that is! (NOT!)

I think the problem is that I don't use it enough to remember what to do from time to time, KWIM? I need to start taking more photos so that I can remember the different buttons and menus.
It's like that with anything new you try to learn. It will get easier and more natural the more you do it.
I would be happy if I could figure out how I want the picture to look before I have to take the picture!

That's awesome! I start on manual sometimes, but I rarely stick with it for very long. Sorry to hear, Kristie's getting sick. Hugs, Kristie, get well soon.

He Said To Me!
He said to me . . . I don't know why you wear a bra; you've got nothing to put in it.
I said to him . . . You wear pants don't you?
He said to me . . ..... Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
I said: That's a good idea - you stand by the stove & sink while I sit on the sofa and do nothing but fart.
He said to me.. ... What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?
I said to him . ..... Turn sideways and look in the mirror!
He said to me. ..... Why don't women blink during foreplay?
I said to him .. . They don't have time
He said to me. . How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper?
I said to him .. . I don't know; it has never happened.
He said to me. . Why is it difficult to find men who are sensitive, caring and good-looking?
I said to him . . . They already have boyfriends.
He said to me.... Why are married women heavier than single women?
I said to him . . . Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what's in bed and go to the fridge.
