OH MY HECK!!! TEN PAGES. Someone take pity on me and give me a run down pretty please!!! I have been so swamped today and it isn't going to get better any time soon I am thinking unless we run out of vaccine and don't get anymore.
I have been working on ONE element all day, 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there. It is so unfair to have multiple car pools, Cub Scouts, Swim Team, have to go to the library, parent teacher conferences, a warm day to fix my Christmas lights, last day to use a $10 GC for Kohl's AND a CE for work, ALL ON THE SAME DAY!!!

Let me see if I can paraphrase. Maybe someone will help me out if I leave something out.
Caro has finally chosen her name.
Shana has made us all Team Edward or Team Jacob flairs.
Lisa can't decide between the 2, so Shana made her a Team Switzerland flair.
Rene STILL doesn't know how to make her camera work due to lack of practice, so Lisa and Caro helped her.
There are huge camel spiders in Africa which freak everyone out, but they don't eat camels.
Michelle was so freaked out by the spiders she needed comic/beefcake relief, so Rene obliged her by posting another dachshund funny and Johnny Depp photo.
Heather is a bit depressed and getting cabin fever from being unable to go out for awhile since Ethan's illness.
Pooh checked in and shared that she was having a hard time getting everything done, trying to be all things to all people and dogs, so Lisa helped her reprioritize.
Rene & Shana just now figured out what ROFLPIMP means.
Does that help? Hopefully I didn't leave anyone out.

Awwww Yummy!
I hope you all have a good day and wish me luck on her pics, I'm totally freaking out!
Good luck Heather, you'll do great!
WooHoo! I tell you, Bryan Petersen's books really help more than the manual. Once you figure out what kind of shot you want, then you go to the camera only to make those adjustments!
Umm would that be the book that I took off the shelf to read? But only got pages into?
See - I am learning in this class!:lol::lol:
Is this an online course Lisa? Or a physical one?
OH YEAH !! THESE ARE GOOD directions !:rofl::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...
:rofl::rofl: Cracks me up that you're a Whizz at difficult camera stuff but find instructions challenging :rofl::rofl:
She made The Jacob vs Edward flairs and I said I couldn't choose! So, Switzerland! Always the neutral party!:lol::lol:
And here I was thinking that it was cos she loved Switzerland so much!
I should be finishing the post work from an engagement shoot and I would just rather play here instead ! (sigh)
:think: I have a brilliant idea..... since I don't have a clue about post processing of images, I think I'll send you all my wedding shots to post process!!!:rofl::rofl:
Awesome name Caro!!!!! Very witty!!!
It took me a bit to figure out the ROTFPIMP!!! Then I got it and almost did P I M P.
(Had to type that all separate because one time I got censored for typing a 3 letter word):rofl:
Love the name Caro! Great job. As far as the PIMP goes, the other day in GT I said I needed a PIMP smiley, and everyone thought I needed a real Pimp smiley, so they were trying to find me one and figure out why I needed one!:rofl::rofl:

Umm correction, the camel spiders are in the Middle East, the two that I saw are specifically in Oman :). Africa has what they call Rain Spiders which are about half the size and are grey in colour.

Carolyn I'm totally taking you up on the processing. How do I do a zip file though? I'm not to happy with my photos they areto soft in some even though I was focusing on her face and at a 5.6. Not sure I really need to figure out me lense. I'm ready to put the kit lense back on
Chris maybe I should move next door. Sounds like you could use some help :).

Man all this spider talk is giving me the heebie jeebies! LOL I can't imagine seeing those in real life...I'd be cowered in a corner. Snakes make me even worse! LOL
Me, too.
I can't catch up on all that! You chatty ladies. :) I was eating my nice lunch and saw a pic of a HUGE leggy spider and I HATE spiders, lunch wasn't so good anymore!
I can't seem to catch up on life. My sister who was getting married back in September is now getting married next weekend (2 weeks to get it all done) because she is pregnant. So I have been getting the invites fixed up for the 3rd time, taking her bridals today :help::help::help: and trying to keep up with my kids schedules.
I also wonder if since Ethan being in the hospital and now not being able to get out and go on with life as normal, cause I can't take him out, I wonder if I'm a bit depressed!?! I just want to get on with life as usual, but I can't. I keep telling myself I'm being selfish and I have to keep Ethan good, but it's so hard! I scrapped a page yesterday with Chris's new kit, but I didn't do it justice so it's just sitting on my hard drive. I might just have to start over.
I hope you all have a good day and wish me luck on her pics, I'm totally freaking out!
Heather, first off, remember: breathe in...breathe out...breathe in...breathe out. Now, give yourself and your life time; everything will be back in order shortly. (Shortly = in the scheme of things, I know the actual day to day seems to drag.) Your pictures will turn out fine, I'm just sure of it.
It's like that with anything new you try to learn. It will get easier and more natural the more you do it....
...
Easy for you to say!

Post processing generally includes any white balance adjustments, exposure tweaks if needed, and sharpening,.... but it is on a need only basis... generally speaking, you would do very little with sharpening portraits and any would be very subtle.. you want sharp, not crispy looking.....

On my PC, I just highlight the images I want , right click and choose SEND TO> ZIP FILE ..A MAC may be different (don't know what you use) . But I would be happy to help...
Remeber tho, I can only do so much if the photo is blurry ! I can make it better within reason but not perfect ! So my advice would be to pick your best shots and send them...
What lens are you using and what seems to be the problem you are having with it ? You've mentioned problems previously, but I don't think I ever asked .....

Be happy to.. just send what you think are your best shots (don't really care how many.).. and I'll do whatever and send them back....if the image is good to begin with, then there is really very little to do... if there is anythng specific you see that you think needs to be addressed, just send me an email detailing your concerns and the image number....

He said to me . . . I don't know why you wear a bra; you've got nothing to put in it.
I said to him . . . You wear pants don't you?
He said to me . . ..... Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
I said: That's a good idea - you stand by the stove & sink while I sit on the sofa and do nothing but fart.
He said to me.. ... What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?
I said to him . ..... Turn sideways and look in the mirror!
He said to me. ..... Why don't women blink during foreplay?
I said to him .. . They don't have time
He said to me. . How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper?
I said to him .. . I don't know; it has never happened.
He said to me. . Why is it difficult to find men who are sensitive, caring and good-looking?
I said to him . . . They already have boyfriends.
He said to me.... Why are married women heavier than single women?
I said to him . . . Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what's in bed and go to the fridge.
I'm glad I swallowed before reading! Now I'm ROFLPIMP!

I'm done!!!!!!!! BTW - that's my failed DOF shot from yesterday!they were sitting too close to whatever those pipes are in the background..... take the same shot with the same settings and put the kids 8-10 feet in front of those things ! If you have the kids sitting on steps and those "pipes" are the railings, they ( the railings) are in the same horizontal plane as the kids and thus rendered sharp !
idtwinmom
11-06-2009, 05:28 PM
Hate to say it, but they were at least 8 feet in front! Unless I'm worse at judging distance than I used to be!
carolyn d
11-06-2009, 05:44 PM
DOF is the softness/sharpness of BACKGROUND objects.. foreground to background... front to back ... any objects next to or in the same linear plane as the subject(s) will be rendered in the same sharpness as the subject while objects BEHIND the subject(s) will be rendered in varying degress of blur depending on the distance from objectto subject to camera based on the the chosen aperture.

And how far away were you??? That could be the critical thing ! the kids may have been 8 feet in front, but if YOU were too close... it may make a difference....
and it's kinda hard judging from that little image too... so I may be blowing smoke outta my butt !!!LOL
there's gotta be a REASON this didn't work the way you wanted it too.. and we must sleuth the reason !!!

I know the reason: it's the lens! I think I need to have them more like 20 feet in front! The way this camera works, it's not "supposed" to give DOF with this kind of focal length! We've talked a lot about that in class as he does a lot of these classes for people with P&S camera's. That's one reason I think he's a good teacher! He knows why these camera's do what they do.
That particular shot really should have less DOF as it was at f5.6. To get any at all I have to be at f2.8. But the one at 2.8 not only had very little DOF, they had screwy expressions on their faces. I want to try on a slightly less "sunny" day and do a series of about 16 shots with me at different distances and the item I'm "blurring" farther behind them. I know what's wrong, I just couldn't get it yesterday! For one thing, it was so cold my batteries were running down too quick! I also need some fingerless hunters gloves so that I can uncover my fingers just long enough to set the camera and then cover them back up quickly! Like I said: it was cold (about 34 F).

Or perhaps practice with an inaminate object while the kids run wild? haha...
Glad the teacher knows the ins and outs of point and shoot cameras ! Otherwise, you'd be very vexed and frustrated.. more so than you are now !

He Said To Me!
In case we run out of masks during the H1N1 flu season,
Here is a ‘homemade’ mask you can make yourself.
It is even compatible with the wearing of glasses!
One thing though.........
MAKE SURE YOUR MASK IS CLEAN BEFORE WEARING!!!!!!!!
OH MY HECK!!! I am ROTFLMAOPIMP!!!:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Don't tell me I missed the last day to use my $10 Kohl's cash?!? Man, you can't miss even one day in this thread. But Rene you did a fantastic job with the cliff notes. I'll be gone all day again tomorrow so keep cliff notes for me again.

Ok, now I am officially freaking out.  And it has nothing to do with nasty icky spiders, rats, or squishing bugs. There's a helicopter flying over the plant. Multiple times. LOW! LOWER!!! LOWEST!!!

Here he comes again!! (Fifth or sixth flyover) LOW!!!!!!! I mean, if I got a tall extension ladder, I think I could jump aboard!
Crys..... Crys.... are you still there??? Crys?????
GREAT SHOT , GREAT LIGHTING, GREAT COMPOSITION...IMHO.... and if I had taken this,,, I would KNOW there was NO post processing needed....
Post processing generally includes any white balance adjustments, exposure tweaks if needed, and sharpening,.... but it is on a need only basis... generally speaking, you would do very little with sharpening portraits and any would be very subtle.. you want sharp, not crispy looking.....
:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: Oh yay!!! I did something good :D.... thanks so much!
Oh my heck! What a fab photo! Love the perspective and your DOF is perfect! I so wish I had a camera that would actually do DOF!
The photography class is in person. The teacher (Marco (http://gutierrezphotography.com/)) comes to Pooh's Mom's house. He's been teaching photography for a long time. He does classes for all kinds of situations. I'm really enjoying it and will contact him for more when I finally get a better camera!
Sigh..... DH about did a back flip when I told him how much Bryan's workshop was in Abu Dhabi!!!
Another trick which I've found to help with DOF is if you zoom in on the subject :).

Sigh..... DH about did a back flip when I told him how much Bryan's workshop was in Abu Dhabi!!!
Bryan also offers online courses which are MUCH less expensive. I personally know 3 people who have taken them and all loved them. The classes run either 4 or 8 weeks. There is an online "homework" gallery to upload your images. Bryan and /or his partener, Chris, will then critique each image. It's a very personal format without being face to face so to speak.
http://www.ppsop.com/unex.aspx
http://www.ppsop.com/seee.aspx
http://www.ppsop.com/macr.aspx
Each of these clasess will work with the books if you have them. Out of the 8 people in my workshop, I was the only one who had NOT taken any of the online courses! Any of the teachers involved with PPSOP are renowned within their areas of expertise and they all love to teach ! So if there is one that interests you where Bryan/Chris doesn't teach, I am sure you would be pleased as well. ( i.e. you may be more interested in wedding or portrait photography than macro)
DH may no do as many backflips with this venue!
Another trick which I've found to help with DOF is if you zoom in on the subject :).Definitely, because the zoom lens compresses the bk. Lisa, howwever is using a P&S camera for her classes, so there are limitations with just how much camera control she has.. She has a nice slr film camera, but it would be very costly to process the film.. digitaly, we forget the time/expense/the wait of fiim processing only to see our "mistakes"... so she has chosen to use the digital point and shoot for simplicity and ease during her classes.
 Thanks Mich.
I'm really not trying to "sell" Bryan's courses.. I only include those links as I personally know of peoples positive experience with them. There may be local offerings in your area through a camera store/local photographer who runs classes... and either of those venues may be more along the lines of what you want- both price and convience wise.
I am pretty much self taught through constant reading and hands on experimentation/faliures/sucesses.. and if you are like me- a kinetic learnier- it's a tough way to teach yourself. A very slow, frustrating process with far too many "OH CRAPOLAS" than "EEhhhh GADS, AN EPIPHANY !"

:rofl: Yeah here is pretty much rural still, even though there are buildings every inch along the highway to Muscat. But if you had to go 90 degrees to the freeway in either direction, the buildings are only about 1km deep, before you get into "nothing"! It is amazing though when we go trekking into the mountains, where we have had to use our 4WD to get access to, one comes over the top of a hill to find a settlement!
Its awesome though, we go camping and there isn't a single soul around. The silence is deafening, the stars amazing since there are no city lights within sight distance, and our only visitors may be a herd of goats. The only disadvantage is.... your ablutions are a shovel and a hole :D.

Hahahaha.... yes :)..... but here no shrubs to hide behind and we do have the odd tree. You need to find a boulder to hide behind!
The one camping trip we went in convoy with a few other people, and it was so funny. The one guy got up before sunrise and climbed to the top of the hill which surrounded the wadi we were camped in and was taking photos. When the sun rose, people started emerging out of their tents and walked in various directions to find a spot, and squat...... and he videod, and photographed it all! Luckily he was too far away to actually get any detail, but from the position you knew exactly what they were doing :rofl:

Hello all! Hope everyone's having a good day. I'm about to get ready to roll for my friend's surprise party. Her fiancee needs me to decorate while he gets her out of the house, so that's what I'll be doing this afternoon, then it's party time! She's a lucky girl, this is the second year in a row she's gotten a surprise party. LOL We threw one for her last year because it was her 30th and her first birthday she could celebrate in about 10 years. It was a PARTY! I hope this one is just as much fun for her! :D
So what's everyone up to today! Chris and Carolyn...no h word! LOL Unfortunately it has to be done though, right? *sigh*

I got up today to try and get stuff out of my lungs since that is now where it is settling and also to do some DSP shopping....retail therapy always makes a girl feel good, right? Before I forget (as I have been going back and reading all the DOF posts..thanks Carolyn and Lisa!)...does anyone have any experience with the Nikon D-70? I've borrowed my friend's camera for Lisa and I's class and haven't even really gotten to play with it yet. It frankly scares me! I'm not so sure I am ready for an SLR even after taking Marco's class. I wish I would have been able to start practicing with my friend's camera from the beginning of the classes, but she wasn't able to get it to me till week two and we never seem to have the time for me to go over it with Marco. I really would like to figure out how to do DOF pictures on it though before I have to give it back to Michelle!

I really would like to figure out how to do DOF pictures on it though before I have to give it back to Michelle! It's very easy to do and every Nikon dslr works the same so i can help you..
TURN THE CAMERA ON.. ( Gundi says she likes her instructions step by step LOL )
ATTACH YOUR LENS OF CHOICE. If you are unsure of how to change/attach a lens..
LAY THE CAMERA DOWN ON A FIRM SURFACE SO YOU ARE LOOKING DOWN AT THE CAMERA ( this is so we are both looking at in the same direction!)
.if there is a lens on the camera and you wish to change to another- depress the button on the camera body directly to the right of the lens and rotate the lens clockwise.
To attach the new lens- look at the lens mount on the camera body. you should see either a red or white dot on the right side at about 1 o'clock. There is a matching dot on the metal part of the lens mounting ring ( on the back side of the lens) .. Line up the two dots and rotate the lens counter clockwise until you hear it click.
On the top left of the camera body there should be a dial that has letters and icons on it.. TURN THAT DIAL TO "A". You are now in Aperture Priority .
There should be a "command dial" either on the back right of the camera or on the front right... ROTATING that dial will change your aperture setting. You can view the setting either in the LCD screen on the top right of the camera OR in the viewfinder.
Apertures run from as low as 1.4 to 32, depending upon the lens. Low f/stop numbers(f/1.4 etc) will give you a VERY blurry(shallow) depth of field while the high f/stop numbers (f/18 and above) will give you a very sharp (deep) depth of field. It will be your choice to determine what you want your bk to look like..
As a general rule of thumb standard portraiture looks good at f/6.3, f/8..
f/8 - F/11 are considered the "sweet spots" rendering an image with the greatest color and contrast
while the higher f/stop numbers will give you sharpness through out the image front to back (foreground to background)
OK. so now you have looked at your subject and the background ....for the purposes of this explanation, pleast try to have your subject about 8 feet in front of your background if possible...if not, just don't have them/it leaning right against the background !!!!
Now, all you need to is focus on the subject by pressing the shutter release button half way down. A little square should be visible in the viewfinder.. that is your focus point.. and that is what the camera is focusing on.. You should be able to MOVE that focus point by means of the ROCKER SWITCH which looks like a large round button on the right hand side of the back of the camera body... using your thumb, you can rock the switch up/down/left/right to position your focus point (if you want to do so)
If all looks good, just depress the shutter release button all the way down to capture the image.
A telezoom lens will show you the greatest differences but if you have a more wide angle zoom (18-55) you should be able to see the difference as well...
Hope this helps

Thanks Carolyn. I do get all, well I really should say, most of your explanation because of the photography class Lisa and I are in. What I seem to be having an initial problem with my friend's camera is using the LCD display. For some reason I can't get it to come on? I can look through the viewfinder and see some of the info. I need, but not quite sure how to change the f-stop and aperature just by looking through the viewfinder? I'm a bit clumsy when trying to hold the camera, lol!
If I can figure out how to get the LCD display on (if that's even an option with this camera) then I think I am halfway there. Thanks for giving the f-stop values though! That should really help.
Off to watch Dirty Dancing and try and swoon over the legendary Patrick Swayze....yes, I cried the die he died :( Hopefully seeing him in such a great movie will make me feel better :)

OK, i have the D70 manual online right now...
You can view all your shooting information in the CONTROL PANEL on the top right of the camera body...(see attachement control panel)
Manual Focus Area Selection
To select the focus area, slide the focus selector
lock to ●. (look to the right of the MONITOR and you will see the letter L and a white dot above it ) The multi selector can then be used
to select the focus area. The se lect ed focus area
will be displayed in the viewfi nder, highlighted
in red if necessary to establish contrast with the
background (“Vari-Brite” focus areas; 8). The
selected focus area is also shown in the control
panel.
APERTURE PRIORITY
A: Aperture-Priority Auto
In mode A, you choose the aperture while the camera controls shutter speed
for optimal exposure. Small apertures (high f/-numbers) increase depth of
fi eld, bringing both the main subject and back ground into focus. Large
apertures (low f/-num bers) soften background details and let more light into
the camera, increasing the range of the flash and making photographs less
susceptible to blurring. Mode A is only available with CPU lenses.
To take photographs in aperture-priority auto:1 Rotate the mode dial to A.
2 Rotate the sub-com mand dial to choose the
desired aperture.the sub command dial is the dial on the front right of the camera body.
3 Frame a photograph, focus, and shoot.
You seem to be confused about f/stop and aperture as you are talking as though they are two different things...... it's the same thing...
The APERTURE is the opening in the lens. It can be made wider or narrower... the "measurements" of this opening is measured in f/stops... i.e f/5.6, f/6.3 etc.. So the f/stop number is only the numerical value assigned to how wide/narrow the lens is opened. Small f/stop numbers (f/1.8 etc) means the opening is very wide and lets more light in.. Large f/stop numbers ( f/18,f/22 etc) means the opening is very narrow(small) letting less light in..
And yes, the weight of this kind of camera takes some getting used to...

Off to watch Dirty Dancing and try and swoon over the legendary Patrick Swayze....yes, I cried the die he died :( Hopefully seeing him in such a great movie will make me feel better :)
with DSLR cameras, the LCD is ONLY there for previewing your picture AFTER you have taken the shot. It isn't like a p/s digital camera where you can use the LCD INSTEAD of the view finder. Because w/ the DSLRs you are actually looking thru the lens, the mirror is in the way so you can't do it.

and I think ( I hope) I noted that ( about the LCD SCREEN thingie ) on one of the attachemnts !
Some cameras now have the ability to use the LCD (aka the MONITOR) like the point and shoots and it's called LIVE VIEW.. the D70 does NOT have this capability. And when a dslr is in LIVE VIEW, it has the same apparent "lag time" as the point and shoots..

this is a little use of creative lighting... the flash was tilted slightly up and forward to bounce off the white ceiling in front of her and from the right side of her face...
ISO 1250, F/3.5 @ 1/60 sec, flash set to standard ttl ( no rear curtain synch this time ) at 135 mm. ( yes, you read that correctly.. iso 1250.. this place was DARK)
Notice the very shallow depth of field... sharp focus on the hand/mic and fades fairly quickly to the face... The photo's impact is from the use of the flash and the angle of view... from below looking up... a bit more dynamic.
Did not use rear curtain sync ( and I know, Gundi, you are wondering 'WHY" as I've mentioned in the past that I ususally use rear curtain) becasue there was very little overall ambient light to deal with and too much movement. Rear curtain fires at the END of the exposure and I wanted this without any chance of motion blur.
And Renee', this was the same lens as you have-the 50-135mm f/2.8.

UGH... 34 DEGREES ! GF, you are such a trooper ! I am a weather weenie... I'm cold at 45 ! would the kids actually sit stil long enough for a series of 16 shots?? Or perhaps practice with an inaminate object while the kids run wild? haha...
Glad the teacher knows the ins and outs of point and shoot cameras ! Otherwise, you'd be very vexed and frustrated.. more so than you are now !
has Chris started his new job?
Yep! He now works for DPS! (I told him it was supposed to be DSP, but he was dyslexic that day!)
Thanks so much for this. Unfortunately nothing local is even an option! We only just got a supermarket 2 years ago, a cinema 6 months ago, and a real live Mall 3 months ago!!!
Where exactly do you live again?
OMG ! You must really live in the desert !!!:rofl::rofl: Just joking as I know you do ! hahaha... Here in RI where I live, EVERYTHING ( and I do mean everything) is about a 10 minuted drive away ! In a state that is so small (a total of 33 extis along the entire main highway) I find I have become geoprahpically "zoomed in"... talk about compressed ! You can imagine how impressed I was when in Alaska.. where NOTHING is really close to anything outside of the main cities ! There are local PARKS there which could easily house the entire STATE of Rhode island with lots of room left over !
Hate to remind you, but the whole state can fit in the city of Anchorage!
That sounds so beautiful ! I can't imagine how the sky looks without the interference of city lights around here....and for the shovel and hole, I'm familiar with that concept.. only in my case it's a shrub or a tree. Those early morning sunrise adventures with a cup of coffee are troublesome to the bladder. Mean anything when I keep babywipes in my camera bag?
Ah, finally, a suggestion of what to do with all the wipes that I don't need for DD any more!

Hey Lisa! How's it going?
It is sunny and 62 degrees here. A nice Sunday. Yesterday it was pretty windy and a high surf along our coast.
We watched my son's friend last night while his parents went out for the evening. Hubby was out at a club dinner so my son, his friend and I had a nice evening watching Horton Hears A Who. We ordered some Japanese take out. We had a good time. I was going to make popcorn for the movie but we were all too full. LOL

Good afternoon, nice sunny day here too but a little cold, high 50s and low 60s I am thinking.
Josh and I stayed home from church today cuz he woke up saying his ear hurt, so I looked in it, sure enough BRIGHT RED ear drum, with fluid behind. Normally I don't consider them very contagious, but he has NEVER had one is his life and he was exposed for a day to his cousin who had one a couple of days ago, so I figured we better not chance it. It is probably a good thing I got him started on antibiotics too cuz I think he is getting a secondary bacterial pulmonary infection like I had so it should take care of both. :) I really can't whine too much about ear infections, I think between all 4 kids we have had a sum total of about 4 or 5. Yes we are blessed with good ears. Even this infection is not a way bad one yet, he wasn't even running much of a fever, so I was happy to have caught it early.

Well, Dorene - looks like I missed you! Glad you and DS are having so much fun! Sounds like last night was really super.
Chris - poor Josh! Give him a hug for me! I have to say, we've been pretty blessed as well. Not sure about how contagious they are, but we never had any until the boys went to preschool! So far, DD has never had one, and the boys only one or 2 each. I think DS#1 has had more than anybody, but can't really remember as we maybe have had at most 2 per season. It's the lung issues in the late spring early summer when the boys allergies get so bad that gets us.
I must admit those temps are sounding awful inviting. Right now I'm drooling over some Fleece Slipper Socks I saw at Costco because I can't seem to get my toes warm this morning. But then, when I compare this to trying to cool down at 100 degrees in the summer, I'll take this any day. Cold toes can be warmed (time to go heat the rice bag I think) but too hot is just too hot!

Well, Gary decided last minute that he could take off work on Friday and that he wanted to take the RV to Ruidoso NM, so we took an impromptu trip!! Just got back a couple of hours ago. It was nice and relaxing. We drove around yesterday and I worked on some DOF shots. I haven't uploaded them yet so I don't know if anything turned out good or not. I tried several different apetures on the same shot to see how each one looked, so maybe I can see what works. Interestingly, we went out to our fav Mexican food restaurant for dinner Friday night and our waiter happened to be interested in photography and actually had a huge camera tattooed on his forearm! Anyway we were talking and he told me some places to go up on the mountain, but when we drove up there the next day, the overlook spot he had told us about was closed! :( I was also hoping to get some photos of the aspens with their leaves changing, but we were probably 2 or 3 weeks too late. They had already lost all their leaves. But it was a nice relaxing time.

Maybe I will post one or two (unless they are all duds!)
He was a really neat guy too. Gary and I really enjoyed him. He was a single dad of 3 children whose wife had left him when the kids were 2, 4, and 6. A couple months later he lost his dad, so his mom and the kids, who he has custody of, left Houston to move to New Mexico where life would be at a slower pace. I think he was working as a waiter while getting his real estate license. I just love getting to hear people's stories. I have such admiration for single dads who have custody of their kids because so many dads just abandon their children after a divorce. He seemed like such a great dad too.

Here is one of my favorite shots. I think the DOF is not too bad. One thing I see is that maybe I wasn't focusing on his/her face. I may have been focusing on the shoulder area. Not sure. There were several deer that came every day to eat at the RV park. This one in particular was fairly tame, as you can see by how close he let me get to him. I just kept slowly walking up to him. Ever once in awhile he would stop eating and look at me, but never ran away. I've never been able to get close like this before, so I guess they are pretty used to people being around the park.
So, cc's please on the DOF, composition, lighting of my photo please. This was about an hour before dark, ISO 400, f3.5.

Hey ladies. I might not be around much the next few days as I'm having some issues. My dad isn't doing so hot - he was diagnosed with dementia and I'm pretty much taking care of him - which since about 2 am this morning meant being by his side while he couldn't sleep watching him open the same envelope and ask what it is every 5 minutes. I'm tired to say the least...and yeah. Sorry to complain. I just need to vent right now. I had to get away from him for 5 minutes before I lost my cool - which wouldn't do any good. Thanks guys. He was diagnosed about a year ago now, but only in the past couple weeks has he started to deteriorate badly. Some days are better than others, and this morning was bad. Thankfully once I got him calmed down, and to take a little nap, he rebounded enough that I was able to let him go get the season tickets to the local college basketball team here. So I've got a bit of a break now.
Sorry to unload here, I was just very frustrated. Thankfully I worked in an Alzheimer's unit for a while when I was a CNA, so I know how to handle it, it's just a lot harder to do when it's someone you love. My sister and mom were in tears and leaning on me this morning and it just all added up I think.

I also need some fingerless hunters gloves so that I can uncover my fingers just long enough to set the camera and then cover them back up quickly! Like I said: it was cold (about 34 F).
Lisa, check Target. They have some over there that are very cute. They probably aren't super warm, but I'm gonna get me some anyways since they have the fingertips that you can uncover. They are near the front of the store by the purses and such.
Another place is over at the Dimond mall at that Peruvian place, I forget the name of it, but my friend Linda and I were in there last week and they have some really warm gloves and hats and sweaters all made from like Alpaca and whatever other kind of wool they use. The great thing about their sweaters is that they are fleece lined! That way they shouldn't be itchy I would think and uber warm. They are kinda pricey though so I am putting that on my Christmas list since I can't afford one right now :(

Thanks Caro! This should help a lot. Yes, when I speak about f-stop and aperture I do get confused or at sound like I am confused lol. You should have seen me in the last class, I thought I was going to give Marco an aneurysm because I was having such a hard time mentally grasping the aperture (size of the lens hole) with the f-stop number. It seems totally backwards to me that as the actual number (f-stop) gets smaller (like 2.8) that it means the aperture lens opening is bigger....right? Seems like they should have made it so that big numbers go with big openings and small numbers go with the smaller openings, lol. I think I've got it down now though. So basically, if you want more light coming in then you use a smaller aperture, right? I guess I should get the cemented in my head first before really continuing on as it seems like that is one of the keys to understanding photography, right?
I'm so putting Bryan Peterson's books on my Christmas list. I guess that's the good thing about my birthday being on Christmas, I don't feel too guilty about asking for stuff for my birthday. This year's gonna be hard though because with me not working anymore and both Dan and I being sick (he stayed home again today) we just don't have the money for Christmas presents for other people which makes me feel guilty when people ask me what I want for Christmas. I like giving better than receiving.

Hey Carolyn! I lost those links to the post processing that you gave me and I tried to find them in our thread but y'all talk a LOT! (I am sure it isn't me. )
Kristie, so when are you going to change your avatar, your hair didn't look this blond in San Jose, you had that gorgeous shade of red. (didn't you? please tell me I am not going crazy. :D )
LOL...yes, I was thinking about that just now as I was reading the threads about Carolyn's avatar. I will change it today. Not sure where you got the red from though? Well, I guess it does look a bit of an auburn color in certain lighting. I'm actually debating on whether or not to grow it back long again? Ever since my stylist moved to Oregon last summer I can't find anyone to cut it exactly the way she did (dang her for finally convincing me to cut it this short and then she ups and moves on me!). I'm super picky about my hair!

Oops, forgot!
Chris - thanks again for your impromptu tutorial at the chat! I think everyone enjoyed it.
And for those who missed it, the surprise was all the hard work Michelle put into our new challenge. You can all take a peak, and take part too by visiting here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?p=769584#post769584).
Hey Lisa, sorry I missed the chat yesterday, but this challenge is already starting to make me feel better! Now if I can just get the Cassie's little Corgi but to sit still long enough to get a good shot in! She always has a contstant smile on her face that is so cute.

Hope everyone is well, and I hope I can check in soon and keep my sanity! LOL
Shana, don't feel bad about complaining. I feel like I've done a lot of that here lately too. You ladies are so great though at listening! I hope things improve for you guys Shana. It sounds like you guys could use some help and some respite! Let me know if you need help finding resources, I just need to know where you live. I used to work in social services and that's my specialty!

[QUOTE=poohbear77;770154]Thanks Caro!
Well, I'm not alone....I keep saying the same thing to John and he patiently goes over it with me. You should have seen me at the camera store on Friday trying to find out about lenses.I think the salesman had all he could do to keep from laughing but I did start out by telling him I knew nothing about lenses.

Hi guys.
Shana I think that's pretty typical with dementia/Alzheimers patients to have good days and bad days. That's how my dad was. The worst times were when there was a big change, or he would have to be in the hospital, he would be a lot worse on those days, sometimes even violent and beligerent, although thankfully that was the exception rather than the rule. Hugs my friend.
Kristie, the way that helped me remember the f/stop #'s were to remember that they are actually a fraction, so instead of it being 2.8, 11, 22, etc, it is actually 1/2.8, 1/11, 1/22, which makes more sense. Now if I could just figure out in which of those settings to use for the look I'm trying to achieve, I would have it made!:rofl:

no, I mean a low number like 2.5 equals a lot of blur. Imagine that if you have 15 people in a photo you want a high number like 15 for them all to be in focus. That was a mind trick I used to make me remember.

Oh my gosh. Then I had it all backwards in my head. I thought a 2.8 would be a wide open apeture, meaning lots of light would be let in, therefore the entire photo would be crisp. And that f22 would be a small opening, meaing less light in, therefore the edges would be blurred. Shoot!

EVERY SINGLE IMAGE YOU TAKE HAS DEPTH OF FIELD (whether you are aware of it or not) ! DEPTH OF FIELD refers to the amount of sharpness in the image from front to back.. from foreground to background ! Changing the aperture(f/stop value) allows you to control HOW MUCH depth of field will be in the resulting image.: ranging from muted tones and shapes to exacting detail. ( both in front of and behind the subject)

Rene, somebody told me once that if you try to open your eyes really wide you get too much light and every thing will look blurry. I don't know about the truth of the statement but that was another thing that helped me remember. Just think "low number is blurry" and don't worry so much about what that means in terms of technical camera aperture stuff. You'll figure that part out later once you have it in your mind that "low number (like 2) is blurry."

I give up!!! I was FOR SURE I had it right this time!:cry:no.. dont give up... you have everything right except the blurry/crisp part....
But at least NOW you know why some of the shots you took didn't turn out the way you had imagined them !!! You were using the lower value f/stops anticipating the background to be sharp so you were disappointed when they weren't and vice versa..
Think of it this way:
if you dump a gallon of milk (light) into an open pot (open aperture) , the milk will splash all over the inside of the pot, make a mess,( background blur) but it will fill up fast.(shutter speed)
BUT, if you pour the milk ( light) through a funnel(narrow aperture) it will not make a mess ( sharp background) but it will take longer to do (shutter speed)
That was the analogy in one of Bryan's books and I thought it was so much easier to envision !

So on my deer photo that I posted last night, the reason I do have some blur in the trees is that it was f3.5! If I'd had it at 2.8, I might have even gotten more blur! That makes sense. I was wondering why there was some blur.
Dumb question alert:
If the 2.8 lens always allows light to come in, how is it possible to get crispness if I manually set the camera at f22?

that is really a neat shot !
re" the sky... there is a very significant difference in contrast between the foreground /subject and the sky... don't forget, you were focusing on a DARK shirt, so the camera will automatically set the exposure for a darker tone, thus shooting the sky all to heck. (overexposing the sky) Happens to me all the time !

It's just the way the lenses are made. it's what is called "wide open viewing"... ANY lens will meter at its most open aperture- this is what allows the lens to focus as quickly as possible. ... but will capture the image with the value YOU SET !

I need some opinions! I took Ethan to the EN&T specialist today and I really thought they would not want to scope his throat, but they do. He told me that if a child gets croup a lot or gets it as bad as Ethan they scope the throat to make sure there isn't a norrow airway or something else. Well of course this can cause the airway to swell and there is always risk in putting people out. So I want to do the scope to make sure there isn't something there and DH doesn't want it done, because #1 he doesn't think there is anything wrong (which might be the case) and #2 he doesn't want him to go through it. I understand the "you don't want to put your child through it" but I also don't want to worry everytime he gets the croup. Which the dr. said is likely becuase kids don't get that sick from croup anymore. He hasn't seen a child tubed for over a year. I just want to know what you would do if it were your child. Whatever you say is fine, I just really want to know. Thanks!

Oh gosh Heather, that's tough! My situation with Drew was so different than yours with Ethan, but I'm going to share it anyway so you can see how I came to my decision.
Drew started to have constant tonsilitis, allergies and ear infection starting about the time he turned 1. He was on constant prescription allergy meds as a preventative, and we were in the doctor's office several times a month with the tonsils and ears. They finally decided he needed his tonsils and adnoids out when he was 2, but by this time, he had been to the doctor so much and been stuck so much, that a doctor could walk towards him and he would start screaming. So I had an appointment for the tonsilectomy and adnoidectomy and we went in a few days before the surgery to get the pre-op blood work done. 2 large men, me and a nurse could not hold this 2 year old down well enough to get the blood drawn because he was so traumatized. So I cancelled the surgery because I just couldn't do it to him. So a few months pass and he gets REALLY sick and they tell me he will not get well until the tonsils are out. So I bite the bullet and reschedule the surgery. It was traumatizing to him. The sedative they gave him before the surgery wore off before they finally came to get him for the surgery, so they took him from me screaming and crying. I felt awful. But after the surgery was over, he has rarely been sick again. No more issues like that. So I guess what I'm saying is that in Drew's case, the end result outweighed the temporary trauma. Ethan's case is so much more severe and serious. It's scary, but I think I would want to know what was going on so that I would have some peace of mind that a situation like that wouldn't happen again. But that's just me.

Good evening ladies. Well glad to see that Rene has a handle now on DOF. Carolyn, I really like your explanations and also the analogy you gave from Bryan's book. Now that I know the low numbers go with blurry backgrounds and higher numbers with crisper backgrounds that will really help too!
Heather, I'm sorry to hear about all you have been through with Ethan. I did get his name on the prayer roll up here in our Temple (I think I did at least??...with me getting sick, DH's dad in the hospital and all, that was a bad week myself but I really do want to make sure Ethan's name is in the Temple. Just email me his full name and I'll do it tomorrow.
I can honestly say I have some experience with what you are going through...well what Ethan is going through as a patient, not Ethan's specific condition, but I've now had over 30 surgeries for my condition and throughout my life tons of tests, some of which I didn't want to do but knew they had to be done. I agree with both Carolyn and Rene in both respects. It never hurts to get a second opinion especially when you are unsure of the outcome, at least to put your mind more at ease. Kids are resilient though and Rene is right, he will get over whatever trauma this may cause him. He will get over it because he will know you and the rest of his family will be there for him to help him through it. I know there have been lots of times that my mom has wished she could take my pain away or that she wouldn't have to put me through a certain type of procedure or surgery, but as the parent she knew what was best for me and instilled that in me so that I would know how to make the best choices for my medical care once I was an adult. Rene is right, the benefits will outweigh the potential trauma. I'm not sure if it's the same kind of scope I had when I was younger, but it actually wasn't too bad. Sure I have "icky" memories of the nasty tasting medicine they gave me, but I am definitely not scarred for life from it and Ethan won't be either. I've had close to 10 brain surgeries and am still here better than ever (well except for those few stubborn pounds that won't leave, but that is more old age coming on I think than anything else...LOL), there were several I was scared to death to have. Sorry, hope that doesn't sound too preachy! I just have a LOT of medical experience so just felt like I needed to add in my two cents.

Well I don't think the DSP gremlins like me much today because I've tried posting dozens of times seems like and it is one thing after another as to why it doesn't post.
Carolyn - Thanks for the analogy from Bryan's book, that really makes sense. I think I am finally starting to have it all click for me too now. When I got home I did some of my homework for my photography class this week and DH showed me how to use the Macro option in the Manual Mode and the pictures turned out just like I wanted! I'll post one of my favorites here in a minute.
Rene - Don't worry about getting it all right now, I'm very much in the same boat and I keep having to remind myself that I just have to get the basics down right now and not rush myself. If I wasn't taking these classes I would be so far out of the discussion right now it's not funny!
Heather - I am so sorry to hear about everything you've gone through with Ethan. Lisa kept me posted before I was able to get back into the norm of DSP life. I have gotten his name into the Temple up here in Anchorage, I think....my life got really crazy that week and this past week with me getting sick, the dogs, Dan's dad being in the hospital and all that I can't remember if I gave the Temple Ethan's name when I gave them Dan's name or not. Send me a PM or if you feel open to leaving it on this thread then I'll call tomorrow and add it in. Sounds like you and your DH could use your names in there as well to receive some clarity about what to do with Ethan's medical care.
Like Rene, I'll share with you a bit of my story to help you see it from an even different perspective. I definitely think you should get a second opinion, especially if you are unsure about the procedure. I have a neurological condition that requires a lot of brain surgeries. To date, I have had probably 10 or so, plus numerous back surgeries, etc. not to mention being radiated, poked and prodded beyond belief. However, it has all been worth it, even the "bad" times. My mom has been my strongest advocate and if it hadn't been for her making some of the difficult decisions on whether or not I should have certain procedures or surgeries then I doubt I would be where I am today. Ethan will get through this procedure mainly because of the love and support he will have coming from his family. Kids are resilient, they really are! Because of my mom being so proactive and such a good advocate for me, it has taught me how to take care of myself more as an adult and be my own advocate as I have gotten older. I've got nearly 30 surgeries under my belt, beginning at the age of ....oh, 6 hours old I believe, and trust me, if kids weren't resilient I would not be here! Just remember to pray and don't rush into anything until both you and DH have received the same answer about what to do (i.e. go to the Temple!) :) Lots of Love!

Okay, here's one of the pictures I took tonight showing DOF. DH had to take the first one to show me what he meant using the Macro Focus and then I repeated the shot to make sure I knew how to do it and this is what I got.

sure know what you meana bout the time fairy chris either too much time or never enough time huh and when you do have the time, it seems like there is no money
Kristie, I'm glad to see you back and glad to hear you are scrapping. Sorry your sick though. Get well soon.
Rene, sounds like you had a fun weekend. I like your deer photo and the one of Gary in your LO too.
Chris, is Joshie feeling better today? Thanks for popping into chat yesterday and giving us a tutorial. I'll let you know when I figure out the node thing in PSP. If you catch the time fairy, can you send her my way please?
Yes he is, thanks for asking
LOL...yes, I was thinking about that just now as I was reading the threads about Carolyn's avatar. I will change it today. Not sure where you got the red from though? Well, I guess it does look a bit of an auburn color in certain lighting. I'm actually debating on whether or not to grow it back long again? Ever since my stylist moved to Oregon last summer I can't find anyone to cut it exactly the way she did (dang her for finally convincing me to cut it this short and then she ups and moves on me!). I'm super picky about my hair!
Yeah I meant auburn, not like carrot top :) Even in your avi now it looks that auburn color. I like it!
I LOVE your new avi!! You two are so adorable! LOL about the hair. I've been using the same stylist for close to 10 years. Sometimes I think I should try someone else, but I can't leave her after all this time. I got mine cut short last week, but I'm not used to it yet. :p
Pictures please :)
So what you're saying is I can still pick the apeture I need for the blur I want, but I will still have plenty of light for the shot even in low light because it metered at 2.8?
Rene I think I read this different than Carolyn, so I will put my 2 cents in, just in case, I am reading what I think you are saying. If you are in low light and stop down to f22, you will still have a LONG shutter speed even w/ a fixed lens because when you take the picture the opening is going to clamp down even though it is a fixed lens. You see the difference between a fixed and variable lens if you look thru mine. If I am all the way wide to 18mm, the LOWEST f-stop I can get is 3.5, now if I do NOT touch my aperture at all and just zoom out to 200mm, my f-stop changes all by itself up to 5.6, because it is a VARIABLE lens. With your lens, if you are at the wide angle and set it to f2.8 and then zoom out it will STILL be f2.8. Speaking of which, which fixed lens do you have? If Carolyn interpreted your response better than me just skip this part. :D
Thanks!
Is the ENT a pediatric ENT? I agree a 2nd opinion would not be a bad thing. A couple of questions I would ask. 1) What % of children have an anomaly etc? 2) What do they do if there is a problem? (If they only have a risky procedure or something that you wouldn't want to do anyway, what is the point of scoping) 3) How likely is he to grow out of this? 4) Risks/benefits of a potential procedure. 5) What are the risks of waiting? Hope you can come up w/ something that you both can be happy with.
Shana, sorry about your dad
Kristie, get feeling better.
Super quick run through I know but I had to spend TWO HOURS this am trying to fix my email cuz it went all wonky. Ended up having to totally remove Firefox then reinstall, but I really didn't have that extra two hours to spend, ya know?! g'nite everyone! Hugs!

Rene, I don't remember what kind of camera you have but it sounds like an SLR so you probably won't have to put the camera as close to your foreground subject like Lisa and I have to with our P&S Canons. If your camera has the Macro function try that and you should get similar results.
Oh, I had this set at 1/4 sec. and 2.8 at 100 ISO. Marco said he hardly ever takes his off of 100 ISO as it really isn't necessary. I haven't changed my ISO settings since starting the class and I've been so much happier with most of my pictures.
Good Luck!

Oh Lisa, I so had a good laugh just now. I was looking at the Sunday Scrappers gallery and was looking at the one by Sam "Ode to China Cat" then saw your comment on the LO. After reading the poem I figured I would see how well Dan's Star Trek knowledge truly is because that one I never would have even thought of. I only had to read the first TWO words of the first sentence and he knew exactly where it came from. the episode number and was finishing the rest of the poem practically! He's a nut! Just when I thought it would be fun to have you and Chris over for a game night to play the new Star Trek Scene It addition! I'm afraid it might not be that fun for the other three of us! What can I say, he's a sad, sad man.....but I gotta love him anyways, right? LOL Hey, at least he isn't one of these freaks that goes to every convention they have and dress up. He's too cool for that I guess...Thank goodness!

Hello all! Hope everyone's having a good day. I'm about to get ready to roll for my friend's surprise party.
Well I'm so far behind now, this party would have come and gone now... how did it go? Or did I miss that part?
I'm still sick and really hoping to get over whatever this is soon!
:( Are you feeling any better yet?
Josh and I stayed home from church today cuz he woke up saying his ear hurt, so I looked in it, sure enough BRIGHT RED ear drum, with fluid behind.
:( Hope Joshie is feeling better already.
Where exactly do you live again?
I live in a town called Sohar. Which is in Sultanate of Oman, Middle East. It was primarily a fishing village, but since the Sultan has requested a Port to be built in Sohar, the town has been developing slowly. When we first arrived, 4 years ago, there was no supermarket, and we had to travel either way to Muscat (2.5 hours) or Dubai (across the border, 2.5 hours) to get our fruit, veg and meat. Slowly but surely we are getting some decent shops. Also when we arrived, the total sum of Westerners in Sohar were 50. All the Expats knew each other, but now..... I hardly recognise a face.
Sounds like you guys had a nice time. So nice to hear about good dads.

Aww cute deer!
Hope everyone is well, and I hope I can check in soon and keep my sanity! LOL
So sorry Shana! DH's Grandfather is also suffering from this. We are due to see him when we go to Disneyland. His dementia has gone from 20 to 9 I'm told. He was in assisted living and apparently hit one of the woman there. He is adamant he didn't hit a woman. He thinks he's still working, and that he had hit a work mate! :(. As a result he's been removed from that place and placed in a new one which specialises in the elderly with dementia.
I give up!!! I was FOR SURE I had it right this time!:cry:
:rofl::rofl: I hear you! But don't give up!
I need some opinions! I took Ethan to the EN&T specialist today and I really thought they would not want to scope his throat, but they do.
So sorry Heather, but unfortunately I cannot help with any advice. Looks like you already got some good ones though.

Thanks everyone. As far as an update, he was doing better last night. I didn't have to sit with him to explain things to him by the end of the night, which is odd, because usually he's worse at night, but I'll take what I can get. LOL Yesterday was the worst he's ever been, so it was scary. He had no clue what he was doing for the first time. He just stood there going through the same 3 pieces of paperwork for about 5 hours. And let me tell you...cell phones or any other technology do not mesh well with dementia. It's actually a bit of comic relief! He was going through his text messages from August that he thought were new.
Thankfully my mother's home today. He had a doctor's appt. this morning, so she took the day off so she could take him, etc. So I get a break today.
Heather, I have to agree with the second opinion thoughts. It can't hurt, and if they think it may be necessary too, then I would go for it. I always go by the "better safe than sorry" mantra. I don't have kids, so I don't know exactly how hard it is, but I know my parents will tell a story about how I had to have a spinal tap as a child and how traumatizing it was to them. I don't remember it. I think things like that are hardest on the parents...to see their child suffering for that moment.
Sands, so glad you're getting the time to get those pieces of your life back!
Rene - It will click soon if it hasn't yet. It's hard stuff to remember. I love your deer shot and the one of gary with the mountains in the background!
Pooh I hope you feel better very soon.
If I missed anyone I'm truly sorry! I feel like a zombie even with sleeping through the night last night! LOL

Thanks for all your thoughts. I saw the ent at the hospital that he was in because the attending doctor was really worried about why he got so sick. I can go get another opinion with a docotor that is closer :). He said that if he is like 40 percent closed off then they would have to do something about it but if he is only ten percent then they would let him grow out of it. I guess I'm just so scared about him getting sick again I want to make sure that there isn't an underlying problem. When i took him in to the hospital yesterday he didn't even act like it affected him and he let the doc and nurse look at him without a problem. DH is going to call the doc today and than we will decide what to do from there. Thanks again for everything.

yes I am pretty sure that is the case, I don't specifically know that lens, (and I can't imagine why they would make a lens that ONLY lets you do ONE aperture, but not like I know a ton. ) but I know that with my 50mm 1.8. The 1.8 is the "wide open" aperture, but your camera can then tell it be a 5.6 or 8 or 11 or whatever. the "fixed" part just means that it can be a 2.8 all the way from 50mm to 135mm and everywhere in between, with a variable lens they are basically cheating to make the lens cheaper. Since the more you zoom, the shallower the DOF even w/ the same aperture, they basically say well you don't really need a 2.8 when you are zoomed to the big number cuz you are going to get some DOF from the zoom, therefore we can get away with a 4 or whatever. (Probably not exactly right on the numbers but you get the drift.) Pipe up Carolyn if I am leading the masses astray :D

I was explaining that THE LENS ITSELF is a constant 2.8 ......meaning it will focus/meter faster as it ALWAYS is allowing light to enter the lens at a wide open aperture. this is what makes it a "fast" lens....BUT ...YOU WILL CHOOSE YOUR DESIRED APERTURE ON THE CAMERA ! So that when you press the shutter button, the lens will stop down to the f/stop you have selelcted..
If you are in a low light situation and you have chosen f/11 as your aperture value in the camera , the LENS is still going to focus/meter through the wide open and constant f/2,8 aperture regardless of where you have the zoom set ...When you capture the image by pressing the shutter release, the lens is going to stop down to f/11... so the shutter speed is going to be determined by that f/11 value AND the iso you have chosen as well...
Chris is dead on when she explains about the variable aperture of her lens..
The FIXED aperture of the lens HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE APERTURE YOU SET IN THE CAMERA !! It ONLY has to do with how FAST that lens has the ability to focus...
Christine
11-10-2009, 05:04 PM
I did NOT know this about fast vs. slow lenses, so am I correct in assuming then that when I am doing wide angle at 18mm it will focus/meter faster because it is at a 3.5, vs. if I am zoomed out to 200mm, therefore 5.6?

OK, so now I got that part. Next question, what is the purpose of having a fixed apeture lens if you can change the camera to whatever you want? So that I COULD use 2.8 if I wanted to even in a situation where a normal camera lens would not let me choose it?
When I bought my camera and lens I explained to the camera shop guy that a big problem I was having was low light situations and he said that's why I needed the 2.8 lens to go with the camera. I guess I'm trying to figure out the logic of it all. If I understand correctly, this lens will allow me to use 2.8 in a low light situation, where as my camera by itself would probably not let me choose that apeture. Right? Wrong?
Christine

it isn't that it will let you choose 2.8 in low light, it is that it will let you choose 2.8 EVEN IF YOU ARE ZOOMED, plus as Carolyn explained it is faster.

So we are being extra cautious so that I don't get that now.
I managed to do one page today amongst taking care of the three furbabies. I've really missed getting to play and train with them. I potentially now have three service dogs in training as Sophie and Cassie are very enthusiastic and want to do everythinng Mac does especially when food is involved. Today at one point, Cassie who is the corgi and small enough had jumped up on top of the dishwasher door that I had down, Mac had learned how to pull out the silverware container and hand it to me and Sophie, bless her heart wasn't sure what to do but did get click and treated for attempting to pull out the bottom rack of the dishwasher so I could load dishes. At least she tried!
Here's the link to my page. I'd love some feedback on it since it seems like it is still missing something. I'm using the same picture I posted the other day. It seems like maybe it needs an element or something for balance. It's for Lisa's Sunday Scrappers (so Lisa if you can't comment because you are one of the moderators of that chat it's okay I figured as much).
Stitch - thanks for the comment already. Glad you like it.

I did NOT know this about fast vs. slow lenses, so am I correct in assuming then that when I am doing wide angle at 18mm it will focus/meter faster because it is at a 3.5, vs. if I am zoomed out to 200mm, therefore 5.6?CORRECT !!!! EXACTLY !!! The more light allowed into the lens, the faster it will focus/meter. ALSO ,, with this type of "wide open" viewing, you will always see your image in the VIEWFINDER as you would see it with a very shallow depth of field....even if your camera's aperture is set for a larger f/stop value ( i.e. f/18) and you will ONLY see EXACTLY what you have for the image's depth of field when you have actually captured the image OR when you use the DOF preview button. When you push the DOF button, the mirror will flip up (the same way it does when you press the shutter release) , the lens will stop down to your chosen aperture---- the image in the viewfinder becomes darker but if you look carefully, you can see just how sharp the background will be. This will let you preview your DOF and you can make changes, or fine tune, your DOF before actually taking the image.

Right? Wrong?
Yes. of course you can choose 2.8 ! You can choose any f/stop value from 2.8 to 22 ( I think that's the range ! ) that the camera will allow. With a fixed aperture lens, you will chose your f/stop value to suit your needs and if f/2.8 is your choice then so be it !
With your lens, if you have the lens zoomed out to 135mm, the smallest f/stop value is STILL 2.8, where with Chris's lens which has a variable aperture, if she zooms to 135mm, her minimum f/stop value would be a 5.6 ! And the LENS will automatically do that ! She would not be able to change the f/stop value to anything LESS than the 5.6...
With my 70-300, If I'm zoomed full out to 300mm, the smallest f/stop value the lens will allow is f/5.6. So in camera, the full range of f/stop values I have is 5.6-32 when zoomed to 300... And as a result, the lens will focus much slower because less light is allowed into the lens !

And faster means less time for camera shake, thus the reason it's good for low light? CORRECT ! In a low light sitation, you can choose f/2.8 as your in camera aperture and the shutter speed would be faster thus making it less "shakey".

Got it! I just looked at my camera. The range with the lens that came with the camera is 5.6 to 36. The fixed apeture lens range is 2.8 to 22. I think that's what I wasn't getting - that my regular lens did not have the option to go to 2.8. Now I understand! Thanks.

All of this does sound so confusing but Renee did ask a question that unforturnatley required a reasonably technical answer ! regardless of whether a lens is a fixed aperture or variable aperture lens, you will still ALWAYS need to choose what aperture you want to shoot at becuase as the photographer, YOU are in creative control . Baseline, Renee', you have a good lens which allows you to achieve your focus and metering relatively quickly even in a lower light situation. It's time like this I wish I lived near you so you could see the difference between that lens and my 70-300 f/3.5-5.6. You would really be AMAZED at the difference is speed !

If that kit lens is a variable aperture.. put it on the camera, put it into Aperture priority mode and put the lens to it's smallest focal length..( ie if the lens is a 18-55 put it to 18). Now change the aperture and you'll see that it will go from the smallest f/stop value listed all the way to the largest.
BUT... if you zoom you lens all the way to 55mm, now check and see what the SMALLEST f/stop value is... and then again, check the entire range... you'll still be able to go to the f/36 but I bet your starting point will be different.

Its EF-S 18-55 IS.
ok.. I pulled that lens off the internet
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Autofocus Lens for Select Digital SLR Cameras
and as you can see, it's a variable aperture lens...( f/3.5-5.6)
meaning if you have that lens atthe focal length of 18mm, the minimum f/stop value is 3.5 but will go as high as f/36- as you told me.
BUT if you have the focal length zoomed out to 55mm, then the smallest f/stop value ALLOWED BY YOUR LENS will be f/5.6 but you can still go as high as f/36 if you choose.
Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.
With the tokina, no matter what focal length you put the camera at.. anywhere from the 50-135, you will STILL have the minimum f/stop value of f/2.8 all the way to the max of f/22.... IT DOES NOT VARY !

Caro and Chris, thanks for the comments on my LO. Chris, you could be right as I thought the same thing kind of at first. I forgot to credit Marcee D. for creating the mask that I used which was from the Maskee_300 kit. I played around with all the masks in the kit with the picture to try and get something I was happy with. I ended up taking the one that is more a corner mask so to speak, duplicating it so I could flip it into the other corner so I ended up with a full page mask so to speak (since I don't know really how to make those fancy ones myself yet). I moved the picture around quite a bit trying to get it to fit within the rule of thirds, which I think I did. I just realized though as I was typing this that I actually have the picture too big like Chris was saying I think. So I shrunk it a tad which then allowed me to put the WA on top of the napkin holder (aka blue blob....hehe) and then I changed it to white so that I could keep it a good size but so it wouldn't get lost sitting next to the pugs which are also black. I also tried playing with the WA vertically. It's creative looking that's for sure. I think I'll put all three on my flash drive and take to class tomorrow and see what Marco thinks since I can get there early enough before we are to actually start. Then if he thinks one of the other two versions are better I'll upload that one :)
My throat is killing me as far as coughing to death. Stupid cough medicine doesn't seem to be working. It was so funny though this afternoon, the gal that usually helps me on Tuesdays (she's from China) stopped by even though I had called her to let her know she didn't need to because I didn't want her to get sick. She was very concerned about me though that I don't eat I guess so she brought by a ton of food like fried rice and some other dish for Dan since it was spicier than I like, brownies and then this other Chinese soup/tea like stuff that she said took her 13 hours to make. It is basically white mushrooms (think that's is what she said...still working through communication issues, lol) and then pears. She said it was for my cough. It actually is extremely good and very soothing. I'm glad she brought a lot of it!
Well I'm off to bed to try and get some sleep. Night ladies....then again, half of you are probably already asleep!

Thanks guys! If I didn't know better I'd say it was H1N1, but I never really have had a high fever with this. Then, just when I think I am getting better, I woke up this morning with a headache and my cough is worse. I don't know which is worse, having a "dry" cough or a "wet" and "productive" cough....how in the world could a cough be productive, LOL...I think I'll take that though as trying to cough when there really is nothing there was getting quite annoying yesterday! Here's to hoping this means it is all breaking up and today's the last day of it!
Oh, and yes I can see how a Sinus Infection is possible. It apparently has been happening from what my doc said because people have been getting so weak from the flu that a bacterial respiratory infection sets in. She gave me antibiotics to start on in a couple of days (from Monday) if I wasn't getting better so I will go ahead and start on those to be on the safe side.
Thanks again for all the prayers!

OK, I'm reading Heather's note and wondering just what I've missed, but, egadds!, I've been sick for 2 days and there's way to many pages to catch up on! Could someone fill me in?
I wasn't feeling real good Sunday but thought it was allergies. Monday morning we had our first snow (about 2.5 inches) so I did what I promised and we had a snow day and went out and played. Well, then just after lunch I sat down to the computer and bam! It was like someone drugged me! I couldn't keep my eyes open and I couldn't keep anything in my stomach. One of the boys came down with the same thing later that night (except he just couldn't eat, he never really got sick thank goodness!). We spent yesterday really quiet and did next to nothing! We're both doing way better today! And now we are having a real snow storm with 7+ inches expected and it's blowing bad. Yeah! Alaska!

WooHoo! Carolyn is here!
Question for ya'! The photo's you took at the zoo where you got the eagle inside the cage, but you can't see the cage: you used a short DOF to get the cage to disappear, correct? So does that mean you used a wide aperture setting?

OK, I literally slumped in my chair when I read that! So you were focusing through a hole or do the bars disappear just because of where you focused?

OK, I literally slumped in my chair when I read that! So you were focusing through a hole or do the bars disappear just because of where you focused?I try to focus through a hole whenever possible, but if not, focusing "past" the bars/wire kinda makes them disappear ... KInda like when you look outside through a screen window... you can focus your eyes one way and see the screen or you can focus your eyes on what is beyond and the screen kinda fades away completely.

Well, that helps!
If the snow keeps coming down as it is right now, I think it will add up to more than the 7 inches predicted! Only problem is that it's blowing at the same time, and hard! Monday when we had the 2.5 inches, it then got really bright and sunny! Talk about a pretty day! Fresh clean snow (the really tiny dry stuff that is light and blowy) with sunshine on it! I'll upload a photo I took!
Oh, I think my camera would just show the bars! I tried the 20 feet between kids and play structure and still don't have good DOF shots at f2.8. The only thing I can think is that it has to be much farther behind with a lens that's focal length is 5.8!

Kristie got a great image with beautiful DOF using the macro setting... But, i don't know how well that would work on something kind of far away from the camera.... worth a shot anyway.

Good morning girls!!!
Lisa, I hope you and DS are doing better today! That photo is awesome. I'm like Sands, I didn't know the blue was the sky reflecting either. But in my defense, West Texas is a bit like the dessert too.
We don't get much snow here. Maybe once a year, and then only a couple of inches.

LOL I almost forgot! Thanks for the reminder! :D
Okay, got the recipe. It's pretty easy. Fry up some bacon. Once that's finished and you've got the bacon out of the pan, you use the grease that's left (yes I know...artery clogging but SO good) and put your shredded cabbage and a chopped onion in there and fry that up. You want to boil the shells (we use the small ones.) Once those are finished, you just combine it all and voila. Easy peasy. Like I said, it's not the healthiest (ha!) but wow it tastes good. I think my mom uses turkey bacon to cut down on the artery clogness (it's a word now) a little bit.

Any reflecive surface will show some bluish tints from the sky... water, ice, snow... Snow is really interesting because it is not only reflective, but also refractive.... really crystallized ice ( you know the little teeny hard snow as opposed to the big fat flakes) and when the sunlight hits the little crystals at just the right angle. you can see little "rainbows" in spots.
A very rare atmosphereic phenomena is a "fire rainbow">.. Cirrus clouds must be at least 20,000 feet , contain JUST the right amount of ice crystals AND the sun must hit it at EXACTLY 58 degrees and then the cloud will look like a rainbow ! I saw on a few weeks ago and it was amazing !
But yes, sometimes the bluish tint to water, ice and snow is a reflection from the sky.
GrandmaCrys

It's also the reflected light that gives birds *color* to the human eye.
GrandmaCrys

The depth of and particles in the water cause the reflective light to be different colors.

Isn't it amazing what you learn reading this thread???
Lisa, if you had taken that same photo when the sky was gray, the shadows would be a grayish color... the fact that the sky was blue, gives those blue highlights... In actuality, the bluish tint is VERY subtle... just the angle you were at when you took the image along with the lens properties really accentuated the color !
