The depth of and particles in the water cause the reflective light to be different colors.Saw a perfect example of this in Alaska.. Wonder Lake... it's an artic lake and too young to support life.. there are no water plants etc on the lake floor.. the lake is PERFECTLY crystalline clear water ...so any "color" seen in the water is a perfect reflection of the sky color !

Hey ladies. I took Ethan to the doctor because he isn't sleeping well and he has ear infections again. I hope this isn't an a problem for the rest of the season. Other wise we are doing good. Still not in the mood to scrap so I haven't turned on the computer much hopefully I will get to the creative juices back. I hope you are all well

Chris have you been doing anymore of jillian's DVD? I did level 2 today and it was a workout.

Christine

I bumped up my weights to the 8s on level 1 today. I figure I will give that a few days, since I doubled from the 4s. Make sure I don't die before moving on. :) Most days I am either swimming or elliptical for 50 min plus doing Jillian's. Not to mention that I end up biking about 2 miles every day taking and picking up Josh from k-garten

So I just saw the newest New Moon trailer. 1 more week! I'm such a little fangirl! LOL

Oh my heck, Sandy!!! Those shots are amazing. I especially love the Harlequin Shrimp. It makes me feel all warm in fuzzy inside to think of all the beautiful and spectacular things in this world that I never even knew existed.

How are all the Gundi Girls today? TGIF! I think the rain and wind have finally stopped here. Things have slowed down a bit in my shop. That's kinda good cuz I get to do more scrappin', but it also is making me a bit nervous cuz I am usually swamped in mid-November. Oh well, I am going to enjoy the lull while it lasts. I am looking forward to a lazy weekend.

Lisa, Barbara, Kristie, are you feeling better yet? Heather, I'm sorry to hear Ethan is still having troubles. Poor little guy has been through enough. Hope he's better soon.

Heather, so sorry to hear about Ethan's on-going ear problems. Hope they get that infection cleared up soon!

Sands, equisite photos! You are the best and it is an honor that you share your photos with us!! Otherwise, like Stitchie there would be even more *wonders of the world* that I would miss! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

You workout girls are making me tired!

Stitchie, glad your winds and rain have settled dow. Enjoy your *spare* time.

I'm also hoping the *sickies* are getting better!

I'm hoping my DH works for his farmer buddy all weekend, so I can scrap! ;)

11-13-2009, 12:08 PM
Sandy, your pictures are absolutely amazing! Lisa's told me about your underwater photography but I guess I've never really seen any shots till now. I'm in awe! Hey, how do you get the copyright thing on your photos? I want to start doing that with my shots, at least the ones that are getting good enough to share.

I'm happy to report that I am better finally! I have a slight cough and sneeze every once in awhile still and I am sure it is really going to take another week maybe too to have my normal amount of energy back, but at least I woke up this morning not coughing and able to talk! So yay me.

I'm so glad it's Friday and so I only have one day alone with dogs today since Dan went back to work today. He is feeling better too. I've got so much stuff to catch up on it's crazy! My mom's foster pups hopefully are getting adopted this weekend. She's really going to miss them and I keep kidding her that she is going to "foster fail" sooner than anyone else....i.e. end up keeping one of the puppies she fosters. So today I have that to help her complete, other volunteer duties that I've neglected for a couple of weeks and other paperwork I need to go through. The drywall guy who is also one of my neighbors is coming back today for day two of the drywall repair project. I've never seen a cat do so much damage to drywall! The interesting thing is that the mud that he put on yesterday gave me the idea of now what color I want to paint the living room. It's almost a flesh color so it is still lighter than I want,, but at least now I have an idea of how a "color" will look in the living room and can really start playing with color. Here's to hoping it ever happens! Here's to also hoping that the dogs cooperate while the drywall guy is here! Yesterday Mac and Sophie were at doggie daycare but since I can't afford that twice in a row they are home today.

And last but not least.....I hopefully get to scrap today!!!!!!!!

I'm hoping my DH works for his farmer buddy all weekend, so I can scrap! ;)

 I've got my fingers crossed for you!

Kristie, I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. Did I miss the story about the cat? What on earth did a cat do to require drywall repair?!?! I hope you get to scrap too :D

I am off to clean bathrooms I think, so I don't have to do it tomorrow. We have a football game tonight but I refuse to go sit in the cold. I'd rather sit right here with a glass of wine. ;)

poohbear77
11-13-2009, 12:57 PM
Nope, you didn't miss any story about the cat. Here it is though in short...cat has claws still (just can't bear to declaw her since I've done that once to a cat and she got in a fight shortly after that with a dog and died....there's a reason God gave them to them so I figure let them keep them and do behavior modification best I can). So Pixel still has her claws, and as a way to get attention, she scratches at the wall, one area in particular was getting really bad. I know Dan could have fixed it as it is just mainly the plaster that has gotten scratched off and no actual holes, but he is just not a "fix-it" kind of guy. When I noticed our neighbor's truck I asked him to come over and take a look at the spots. It's a good thing he did too because there are some actual other cracks that he noticed that are more serious. We knew about them, but just figured they are from the house settling since we had it built. They are, but they are in very highly visible areas and also, a couple are more than just cosmetic. So there you go, the cat caused most the damage, but could have saved us from some big money further down the road by it all getting fixed now!

I really need to train Mac or one of the dogs to get the phone for me when it rings! I keep trying to train Mac on it, but he just doesn't really get it. Now to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Hi girls! Let's see if I can catch up.

Heather, sorry poor Ethan has an ear infection. :( I hope he will feel better soon. That's no fun for him or you guys. Hugs.

Chris - WOW! That is a lot of working out. I still haven't started. Gary hasn't gotten the treadmill moved downstairs yet since I am still waiting for the toes to feel like wearing tennis shoes. Hopefully next week.

Sands - OH MY HECK! Those photos are so awesome! The Christmas Tree fish are cool and I love the harlequin shrimp photos again. Amazing!

Kristie, sounds like you've been super busy!!! How did it go with the dry wall guy? Glad you are feeling better.

We don't have much plans for the weekend. We are having dinner with all 3 kids tonight, but other than that, nothing else is going on. Tech plays away tomorrow night, so no game to go to. Not even sure Gary will be playing golf Sunday since he strained his back on the rv trip last weekend. I'm sure if he thinks he can manage it, he will play, we'll see. :D

Stitchie and Chris - My foot is getting better. The Dr. said I could take the boot off for a while in the house and it doesn't seem to bother me. Go back to see him the beginning of Dec. Thanks for asking.

Hope everyone's weekend is spectacular.

Okay gals, I have a dilemma of sorts and need your help. I am pretty sure my mom is thinking of getting me an SLR camera for Christmas (dan let it slip!....Lisa, don't you dare say I said anything!) Apparently mom was asking Dan which camera he would recommend to her from the ones that she was seeing in a Best Buy ad. The thing is, even though I love my mom dearly and I would kill for an DSLR camera, my mom doesn't have the best track record for getting the best quality electronics equipment. Sure, she asked the computer guru, but I would have felt more comfortable had she asked Lisa! Dan is good at computers, but since he didn't take the photography class with Lisa and I, turns out I know more about photography then he does now! I was actually hoping for gift cards to Best Buy so it would help defray the cost of the camera when I decided on which one I want (leaning toward the D300 like Carolyn has since I've handled her camera and like how it felt and all). My mom bless her heart, tries to get me what I want for Christmas/my birthday but when it comes to electronics, she tends to go more for price point rather than quality if you know what I mean. The reason I don't have a SLR yet is because I can't even afford it so I know my mom can't either, not the one I want anyways.

So what should I do? Like I said, I would love to get a camera, but also want to pick it out myself so I know what I am getting is what I want. Should I somehow hint to my mom to not get it for me since I'd rather get it myself? If I do, then I have to figure out something else that I want for Christmas since she keeps bugging me about me getting her "my list" so to speak. I dunno, I think it is more fun to give than receive and also to be surprised either by something you really want but don't think you'll get or just simply being surprised.

Suggestions welcomed.

Kristie- I'm gonna wade in here with some thoughts/suggestions/recommendations and I am hoping that the Canon users offer their suggestions as well...Some of what I'm going to talk about is general knowledge stuff and some is very specific according to what I have personally "discovered" along my travels...

NIKON D300 vs NIKON D90:

both have the exact same sensor! 12MP CMOS sensor. The difference between the two is that the D300 has a slightly faster processor.
Both bodies are about the same size/weight. Controls are similar but not the exact same.
The D300 has more focus points available (51 on mine and 9 on the D90). I don't use 51 very often for the type of shooting I do.. and find 9 to be more than adequate for my needs .
The D300 has only 4 available modes... Aperture, Shutter, Manual and Program.
The D90 has those 4 modes, and the Automatic mode... PLUS the scene modes... Portrait, Action, Landscape, Night Portrait, and several others which I just can't remember right now. Most beginning photographers like having those modes to use ( or fall back on if need be) so they are better guaranteed a good exposure when it counts .

Both cameras offer easy to access exposure compensation, flash compensation live view, burst shooting. Both have DOF preview buttons, both have iso starting at 200..mine goes to 6400 in the "high" range, but realistically.. who wants that kind of noise.. so I think this is a moot point. Both handle the 800 range with acceptable noise levels easily handled with a noise reduction software.

Both have in camera focus motors.. so you can even use auto focus film lenses !
BOTH cameras can be used as a "commander" meanining it can trigger multiple flashes to fire at the same time.

The D90 has video capability which the D300 does NOT have. However, the D300s DOES have video. Again, this may be a moot point if it's not something you are interested in.

The D90 is about half the cost of the D300. And that is SIGNIFICANT and now segues into the next ...

If the cost of the D300 body is accessible then it is worth considering the D90 and getting a better lens and/or external flash with the difference. At the rate today's camera technology is advancing, you will find that there are "bigger , better, improved" models coming out every 18 months or so.

My suggestion would be to get a good entry level camera on which you can easily learn all your techniques, and grow into. and spend the balance on good glass. using all it's features and capabilities, you may just find it's the only one you buy as it can take a LONG time to really be able to work all the features ! These cameras are smart and powerful artistic tools at any level..

So, you are probably wondering why I bought the D300 if the D90 is so similar... it's because I learned an a FULLY MANUAL film slr.... even the lenses were manual focus...I had no use for the preset scene modes.

When you buy a DSLR, you are not buyng just a camera, you are buying a complete SYSTEM- consisting of camera, lenses, flash, filters, tripod, spare camera battery, rechargable flash batteries (and charger),camera bag to haul and store stuff in, etc. Each purchase can be costly on it's own.
and seems there is always SOMETHING "FUN" to get.

As you learn and determine what kind of photography interests you more, you will find there is a lens which is more suitable for that purpose. And the "collection " grows !
There is a good chance you'll embrace a telezoom lens to start and one day go back to your "street zoom" kit lens (which had been collecting dust in the bottom of the bag) and fall in love with it..Zooms are very forgiving to work with while the wider angles are compostionally more difficult to work with... but have such amazing depth of field !

GENERAL COMMMENTS/THOUGHTS
Don't fall prey to the "mega pixel " wars. Remeber, the hgher the MP count, the larger the file and that means the need for more storage room..so you would need to consider at least one external hard drive. And when looking at mega pixels, consider how you are going to be using the images. An image from a 6MP camera can be blown up to 20x30 with excellent results. (I did that and it was great! ) And at 8x10, they are fantastic. A 24 MP camera should produce an image you can blow up to billboard size and wallpaper your den ! LOL !

GLASS IS FOREVER, CAMERA BODIES ARE THE DISPOSABLE COMMODITY. BUY GOOD GLASS !!!

YOu will get frustrated with the onboard flash very quickly. If you don't get an external flash right off, put that at the top of your list ! They are so much better in every aspect, more estheticallly pleasing results and better, nore powerful functionally. Don't need to spend $500 on a flash, just a good basic model will serve you well for years.. and in the event you do upgrade to a "master flash", you keep the original as a "slave/secondary" flash which you can fire remotely.( see COMMANDER comment above)

Now, I know that Crys and Chris both own Nikons ( I thnk at least one of them have the D70.. I'm hoping they each give their thoughts... And Renee owns a Canon, STITCHIE??? What kind of camera do you own?????? Can you guys weigh in here as well?

have I horrified you enough???

As far as the MOM thing goes.. don't know how to help you on that one... my best suggestion is to put down the exact camera you want with a side note attached... " This is really the ONLY camera i am interested in.. and once you have picked your jaw off the floor at having seen the cost, maybe a donation towards the total cost would be best". ( the reason i didn't say gift card is I am not sure if the gift card needs to be used within a specific period of time)

SANDS.. your images are BEYOND AWESOME ! ( Sorry I'm a day behind here... my bed was calling to me very vigorously the other night and I , being the weak person I am, succumbed to its call... in bed by 730 pm to tell the truth..AND IT WAS WONDERFUL !

Sounds like your December will be "packed" with stuff ! Hope you all have fun !

Thanks Carolyn.... I have to admit, diving really takes it out of me and usually after a day's diving I'm in bed by 7:30pm too.

OK.... I went looking in your gallery for a photo that fits this description and couldn't find it.... can you link me please?

Kristie, I have a Nikon D40. At the time I bought it, it was the lowest (cheapest, most basic) entry level DSLR on the market, and probably still is. It's just 6MP. Someone explained to me that a 6MP P&S does not compare to a 6MP DSLR, because the size of the sensor is so much bigger on a DSLR. Another thing to note about the D40 is that the auto focus is in the lens, not the body, which means when you buy lenses you have to buy an AF lens, which gives you fewer options. I knew all this when I bought mine, and I was okay with it. I just wanted a DSLR for personal hobby shooting. And let me tell you I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my D40!! I have always owned Canon P&S's, but I shopped for a while and I liked the Nikon better. The D40 just fit my hand best and another thing I love is that it is relatively small and light (compared to more professional DSLR's). I don't know if there is something new out there but 2 years ago it was the smallest, lightest, least expensive DSLR on the market. I have bought a 55-200VR lens, and use both my lenses regularly. Maybe one day I'll buy a more professional camera, but that's far into the future. My D40 is one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Chris... SHOT the TRUCK???? Oh my heck! How bad is the damage? Sorry about your Utes :(

So NOT funny, Sands, so NOT funny! :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:

Yes, this Crys does have a Nikon D70s. What I know about it, you would NOT fill up a thimble. :p :p Having said that, I LOVE IT TO PIECES! Why did I go with this one? I knew nadda about cameras, but my older son had one and I used it while we were vacationing together and fell in love with it. At the time I had an Olympus P&S and I really needed a better camera for my scrapping needs.

Went to a wedding shortly after I got the Nikon and had a discussion with the professional photographer, who was using a Canon. After being very kind and giving me some pointers, plus inviting me to join his camera club in the evenings, (which I could NOT do, because they're an hour's drive from me and I do not drive in the dark.) he made some jab at me for having a Nikon, rather than a Canon. Afterwards he admitted that the ONLY reason he was using a Canon was because it was the camera that was on sale at the time he was upgrading.

I have the Nikon D40 as well. I knew all about the limitations it would have re the lens and I didn't care then, and I really don't care today either. It works beautifully for what I need it for. I really love my D40. DH is trying to tell me that for Christmas I should ask Santa for a "better" Nikon.... but I don't need or want a "better" one, mine does the job beautifully. If I learned how to use it properly it would do even better..... so phooey on him and his idea of making my wish list for me, sheesh! hehe.

Any dslr you buy will give you more than enough room to grow as both a photographer and a " photo technician"... entry level dslr cameras give you PLENTY of room to grow AND the benefit of preset modes... Best of both worlds... and won't cost you an arm and a leg.. just the arm ! haha...

I was completely happy with my D50 but due to the type of photography I found myself heading into most often, I had little choice but to upgrade.. I sold my camera, a couple of lenses, filters, 3 spare batteries, 4 memory cards, card wallet, gadget bag, lowepro bag and assorted doo dads to a friend who takes AMAZING wedding images with it.. Not a bad investment for $350.00 when she is now getting $300.00 per engagement session ! And I've gotta tell ya, she shoots in Auto a lot because she is just learning how a dslr works..

IT IS NOT THE CAMERA.. BUT THE MIND BEHND THE CAMERA that makes the images what they are !

Gee, after nearly 4 days away I would have thought there would be more pages to read. Wednesday I went to my photography class and then came home to a very restless night. Spent all day Thursday with a headache so bad that looking at a computer was out of the question, Friday was spent trying to catch up on all the stuff I hadn't done all week, and yesterday I was all over town trying to get caught up on the shopping and laying in of supplies! Well, I will get all these pages read in a bit!

OK so I can see further enlightenment is needed here :) Apparently they were hunting and a pheasant flushed, dh chose not to shoot because it was in the direction of the truck and he didn't think it was safe. Well obviously one guy with them didn't feel that way and figured it was too far away to be a problem. Not only did he put lots of dents in side of the truck but he actually broke a window in our shell. Mind you we only got the truck a bit over a year ago and the shell like 5 months ago!:mad::mad::mad: DH said "I had to put my gun down and walk away!"

One thing I LOVE about my D80 is all of the things like iso, WB, etc, can be adjusted on the fly by pressing a button and turning a wheel, rather than having to go into the menus. I LOVE that!

What interesting info! Now I need to find a lesson plan to share it all with the kids!

Saw a perfect example of this in Alaska.. Wonder Lake... it's an artic lake and too young to support life.. there are no water plants etc on the lake floor.. the lake is PERFECTLY crystalline clear water ...so any "color" seen in the water is a perfect reflection of the sky color !
As pretty as this is, I think the color of the Kenai River is much more striking! It's literally Aqua Blue from glacial ice! I've never taken a photo of it that really turned out the way it is and am hoping that all my new found knowledge will assist me in getting that perfect shot next summer!

Shock Horror, I just found out that my MIL is coming to stay with us for 2 weeks

I had only planned for my friend to be here, but now I'm going to have a full house it seems. My MIL arrives on the 7th Dec, my friend on the 17th Dec, and my FIL on the 18th Dec  . Luckily my in laws leave on the 21st!, then my friend and I will be able to have some quality time till she leaves on the 16th January!
I think I would have a heart attack if my MIL suddenly decided to come stay for even a couple days! I can handle maybe one overnight and then I get incredibly grumpy! Thank goodness we just don't have the room any more! And to have them just come when you have other company, well, I won't say what I think of that because I'm sure your in-laws are nicer than the image in my head!

Sands, no rain for 2 years?!?! I can't even imagine that. I can't imagine my MIL staying at my house for 2 weeks either  When she visits it's usually for 2-3 days max. My parents won't stay for more than 2 nights either. Hmmm... what does that say?

HEy, PQ, Goshiki and Caro, good to see you all popping in. You should stick around and chat with us :D
I think that says you have very considerate relatives!

SANDS.. your images are BEYOND AWESOME ! ( Sorry I'm a day behind here... my bed was calling to me very vigorously the other night and I , being the weak person I am, succumbed to its call... in bed by 730 pm to tell the truth..AND IT WAS WONDERFUL !

Geez! Even sick I wasn't in bed that early! But with the way you burn the candle at both ends I think your body must decide: "OK, tonight I'm in control!" and puts you to sleep!

Although suggesting a gift card is really a good idea, consider this - if you can't use it in fairly short order then you may want to suggest a check instead. Gift cards expire and then you have lost it all. Any gift card you give you should check all the fine print first. Some even loose value at a predetermined rate, so it may be worth $20 when you bought it, $15 in 3 months and gone in a year. Oh, and if you want, have Dan hint that she chat with me. We can talk over your wants/needs and I can send her in the right direction based on that. (remember, I'm not the best photographer, but I have already done some of the camera research.)

You have to admit it's pretty funny for us to imagine it.

Yep you are the epitome of consideration. :D

I thought so too!! Anything to be helpful, ya know?

GOOD FOR YOU, LAURA BACKWARDS !

Well, shoot, then I am doomed to a lifetime of yucky photos!:rofl::rofl:

Oh, you stole my saying Rene! After this class I realize I spend like zero time thinking "what is this going to look like". Who has time, when what you are doing is grabbing the camera and shooting what a kid is doing at the moment! Of course, our teacher seemed to think it was amazing I got anything of the kids and admits when they have a shoot with kids he usually pretends he's injured so that his wife will handle the camera!

And although I agree with you Carolyn, there is a little to having a camera that will take the shot you want it too! I will continue to want to shoot DOF and only be able to do it for items really close to the camera and have it set on Macro! (BTW - Kristie used my suggestions to get that shot, but she really did do a great job with it!) I got good DOF when the infocus item was just inches from the camera and the rest was several feet, but to do it with portraits where you can't be that close I still struggle. I know what to do, but the camera's focus system overrides it even in manual mode. And if I could get the kids to sit long enough to focus, turn off autofocus and then shoot, I might be able to do it too (if the blurred items are 30 or more feet behind them). That is the camera, not me!

OK, now that I have rambled! I need to go get some other things done!

Oh, you stole my saying Rene! After this class I realize I spend like zero time thinking "what is this going to look like". Who has time, when what you are doing is grabbing the camera and shooting what a kid is doing at the moment!agreed ! The vast majority of my best kid shots are truly LUCKY shots.. just right place, right time and finger at the ready... Many times it's just raise the camera and hope to heck the focus is where I want it. And again, sometimes I'm lucky and sometimes I'm not ! THE FACT THAT YOU ARE GRABBING FOR THE CAMERA MEANS YOU ALREADY SEE THE IMAGE IN YOUR HEAD... Of course, our teacher seemed to think it was amazing I got anything of the kids and admits when they have a shoot with kids he usually pretends he's injured so that his wife will handle the camera! I know quite a few photogs who feel that way. Children CAN be difficult but with patience the end results are often so much more fun and rewarding than those shots of adults.

And although I agree with you Carolyn, there is a little to having a camera that will take the shot you want it too! OK, now that I have rambled! I need to go get some other things done!not a ramble at all... and yes, there IS a great deal to be said for technology that makes it easier for you to do what you want and do it quickly... rather than needing to struggle/fiddle/curse/ bemoan/throw the camera across the room...but first and foremost you need to give yourself credit for initially SEEING the shot ! Especially with kids, anticipation of events is what you need to think as well... if the kids are playing together, there is a good chance something cute/unique will happen- it always does... so be READY and SET with the camera BEFORE the "moment" comes and goes... if you are quietly in the backgrouond and just following along, you'll be amazed at how many great facial expressions etc come and go.....

Yesterday Gary and I were at Best Buy and I very subtly (or maybe not so much) pointed out a nice tripod and the Bamboo Pen & Touch to him so that he could get a visual of 2 of the things that were on my list. Wasn't that nice of me? :DVery helpful indeed... now you can only hope he remembers EXACTLY which ones you pointed out ! I currently send emals to the kids with a detailed list, including on line links, stores, product numbers, prices etc... of the things that tickle my fancy... Various prices so they can buy individual or pool their money and get me a "biggie" .... I'm not fussy...

I remember years ago, I asked a certain idiot for a very specific jacket for Christmas... got a jacket but NOT the one I wanted... he figured I gave him the wrong number as he didn't like the color ! Another year, (same idiot) I asked for an extension ladder so i could clear the gutters and not need to borrow the neighbors ladder... and what did I get??? FREAKING PEARLS !!! And do I WEAR these pearls with my little black scrubs?? WHAT THE HECK??? to this DAY, he refuses to believe when I tell him what the kids want/ need/ sized... and consistently gives them something they won't wear... They DON'T like pull over hoodies as they have big heads and prefer zip fronts... can i tell you what they get? Pant sizes are 34x34 low rise, loose fit... oh you should see the mess he makes out of that one.. and all because he doesn't think they take that size. ( should i say here that both boys are bigger than he is.... what the heck, I say! )

Chris I'm sorry to hear about the truck. Of all the things to happen, that had to be it. At least no one was hurt..thankfully!

Carolyn - thank you so much for all the info. I will definitely be using it when I finally am able to take that step! :D

Carolyn, thanks for the links. Awesome pictures! Yet another wonder of this world I've never seen or heard of.

SO I told those of you in chat today that we did an impromptu photo session in the yard today with a tripod and remote. I snapped off 225 shots. Of those maybe a dozen or so usable one. I came away with a several decent ones of the kids, when I was actually holding the camera. The ones of the four of us while I was using the remote... good grief. I got a few okay ones, but I may have to try that "trading heads" trick you guys were talking about.

That's right!!!

Our main tree is decorated in red and gold, but I have one special ornament on it that doesn't match at all. It's a Permian High School ornament, which was sold back in the 80's when I was going to school. Well even though we didn't grow up in the same town, our high schools played each other in football every year. Permian was a big power house of football in the 80's (the movie and book Friday Night Lights is about my high school in the 80's). Gary says that the year he was a senior and marching in the band, they came to Odessa to play PHS and "Permian cheated and the refs wouldn't call anything on them" and " we really won if it wasn't for that". :D None of the schools we played back then liked us much because we won so many state titles. So every year, I make a HUGE production of putting my black and white Permian ornament on the tree even though it sticks out like a sore thumb.:rofl::rofl::rofl:

She says even if she gets accepted at Fresno, she might be too scared to go and decline it (she's only 16) so that she can go to the school closer to home.... she's not sure she's okay with being about 3 1/2 hours from home. And because of where we live, we don't automatically fall under any of the Universities as one of the "local high schools" that the students are automatically acccepted at (providing they have the scores, etc).... so she's considered an outsider at ALL schools and therefor doesn't get first priority at any of them.... darn!! She's got a really good gpa and sat scores though, so hopefully this will help her. She says even if she gets accepted at Fresno, she might be too scared to go and decline it (she's only 16) so that she can go to the school closer to home.... she's not sure she's okay with being about 3 1/2 hours from home. Poor kid! It's okay, momma isn't ready at all for her to be that far from home! So while I'm crossing my fingers for her to be accepted, I'm also in my heart hoping she chooses to stay close (an hour) to home!

Wow! Good for her!!! What an exciting, and scary time. Did she skip a grade or start school early? What is she wanting to major in? Does she know yet? My youngest stepdaughter is 16, almost 17, and she in no way would be ready to leave home for college. She's really shy though. She will go here to Texas Tech and live with her mom probably, or move in with her sister. She has her first job interview tomorrow. She's really not looking forward to it, but her friend works at the same place and Gary and I think it will be good for her to have to interact with people.

She skipped a grade (or as she puts it... she skipped a grade and a half). She did just part of 5th, none of 6th and part of 7th, then full years from 8th and through to now 12th.

She wants to ultimately be a Physicians Assistant. She wants to start with being an RN first. She plans to then be a Nurse Pract, and then go for Phys Asst. She feels doing it this way it will allow her to see exactly where she ultimately wants to be. Right now she says she wants to do trauma work. But she knows she won't most likely be able to just jump right into the trauma scene since she'd be a new nurse, so she'll have to work her way to it. She is also thinking she might want to be a traveling RN for awhile. Oh my poor heart...... LOL! I know she's going to be terrific in the career choice, and she makes me so very proud. She is a wonderful role model for her little brother too. He really looks up to her.

I love the LO of the boys with their cameras. So cute. I might seriously have to send you some pictures to swap heads for me. I told DH that I might try to swap heads in some pictures and he said... " yeah, swap me and AJ's heads and swap you and Ali's heads. That would be funny" What a goof. Now I'm going to have to try just to give him a laugh. :D

Try it! It's very addictive!

Of course, Rene, we expect pictures of your trees this year.

Rene, I think your SDD getting a job will probably help with her shyness. I wish her lots of luck on her interview tomorrow!

She's so lucky to have a college close to family where she can stay, instead of the dorms. I wish Kaylin didn't have to live in the dorms....

The interview she has is at a small family diner-type restaurant, and she pretty much already has the job because her friend recommended her. She really doesn't want a job, but we feel like if she's not going to be involved in some extracurricular activity at school, that she needs to work part-time. Mostly we want her to interact with the outside world. If it were up to her, she would stay home forever and never leave the house. So we think this is definitely a good thing. She'll probably have to take orders at the counter and the drive-thru, and take orders to tables, so she'll have to interact. We worry about her because she's not interested in anything but watching movies all day every day.

She'll have her choice of living with us, her mom, and maybe her sister, depending on what's going on in my oldest DSD's life when the time comes. It's much less expensive and scary.

so question for all of you computer geeks and/or computer geek spouses :D

I need a new battery for my old lappie. It is only holding a charge for like 10 min. So first any suggestions as to how to solve this problem and if not, I can get a new one from HP (dv6000 and 12 cell battery) for $112.49 free s/h

When I look elsewhere online looks like there are a bunch of cheaper ones. Who is reputable? Is it worth the higher amount of money to get an HP one? Help please!!!!!!!!!

a stye can be in the top lid too, I have seen it happen. Try some warm compresses. Make sure to notice if you have crusty goopy stuff in the morning. That is more typical w/ an infection where as the styes I have seen are more clear liquid sort of deal. Also styes are typically a more localized hard bump. If you are thinking it is a stye, there is an over the counter product called stye that can help some. If it is a true eye infection you will need to be seen to get an antibiotic. You could get your DDS to write a prescription but that would be "out of the scope of practice" so not sure if he/she would want to do that. PM me if you need a recommendation. :)

Stitchie, come any time; I'm here just waiting. When I switch heads/eyes, the first thing I look for is two pics where the transplant recipient is looking/standing in the same direction. I do have an advantage, because when it's a family function, there are usually 1 to 3 of us taking pictures. When it's just me, I still seem to take a lot of repititive photos. I select the area I'm wanting to move, place it over top the *to be switched* area, lower the opacity of the top layer so I can *line* them up. Then I grab my brush and start masking away the top layer to blend in with the bottom layer. Sometimes I also have to do a bit of cloning on the bottom layer, say for instance, if shirt collars, or whatever, don't match up properly. If you can get away with just replacing the eyes, it's a lot easier.

The only thing I know about laptop batteries is they can be soooo pricey!! And, depending on how old the laptop is, they are really hard to find too.

Ewww pink eye! That stinks! I agree about doing the compresses. My son recently had pink eye, then they realized he was allergic to the drops they gave him for it (the sulfur in the drops).... so he had swollen red itchy eyes for about a month.

Thanks for the tips! Especially about lowering the opacity to position it better, and cloning on the bottom layer. I am very repetitive taking photos too. I keep the camera on burst mode and snap off 2 or 3 of the same thing, then keep the best and delete the rest. Unfortunately I'm not very good at the deleting part, so I keep too many duplicates. I should probably take it off burst and just try to get better shots... depending on the situation. The photos I'm wanting to swap heads on though are posed pictures of the family, where ONE of us ends up with closed eyes or a stupid smile. I might be able to swap faces rather than heads. Thanks for the help. Now... how are you liking the tablet?

Oh gosh that is terrific news for Kay! I am sure she's so happy to be just about done with all of that chemo stuff and now she can concentrate on other, more fun things. Sandy, your hair looks great! All 9 or 10 of them.... hehe :-)

Ouch! Poor little dude!

Oh man, I would be starting to panic! I hope you get it soon!!

:lol: Yes!!!! Kay has had her last chemo session, so her hair growth should kick back in :D....

Yay for Kay!!!!!!! :yahoo::yippee::yahoo::yippee:

While glancing in the gallery this am, I see that you have indeed made your very own ATC. Wanna make mine? :D

I actually made 2 last night, but decided on the one I posted since it was sparkly and pink! :D

OK, I posted this on Facebook, but didn't tell you guys: I almost drowned in the hot tub night before last!

I was in the hot tub waiting for Gary to come outside and it was really windy. The heavy cover fell down on my head because of the wind and I couldn't lift it off because it is full of condensation and very heavy. Thankfully after a bit, Gary came outside and lifted it off my head!!!

I really need to stay away from water.

OMG! Wow, never heard that before. Were you in panic or just patiently waiting for Gary to show up?

The cover is on a hinge kind of a thing, so you just lift it up and it sits on the hinge on one side of the hot tub. So the wind just caught it and it slammed down on my head. At first I was thinking no big deal, I could lift it off, but when I realized I couldn't due to the position I was in, then I started to get a bit scared because there wasn't much room left for air.

Chris, do you think a cortizone shot would help my shoulder/arm? Do they give those for tendonitis/bursitis?

They do. I was on cortizone shots for my shoulder for a while when they thought it was just bursitis. It helps for a while. :D The only problem is that if you continue to get them, it could make your tendons weaker and you could end up ripping them, so it's good for a 1 or 2 time deal, but they don't really do it for an extended period of time.

 Don't write off doing it just because of the injection. Talk to your doc and see if he thinks it will help. It really is worth that moment of possible pain if it does work. And since you have swelling, it may take care of it for a long time because it reduces the swelling right at the site. :)

and a link to Wkipedia detailing what it is exactly....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumhorizontal_arc

Although the article states that this is not as uncommom as we are led to believe, I have only seen one and that was several weeks ago ! Maybe I'm not looking in the sky enough OR they really are not all that "common"... Seems to depend upon your location... but it is a spectacular sight, regardless.

The one I saw was VERY similar to this one;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circumhorizon_Arc.jpg
Wowzers! I have never seen such a thing, but they sure are gorgeous!

I figure Christmas season is going to be a great time to practice!!! I am putting up the trees next week I think since we have so much going on starting Thanksgiving. I've never put my decorations up before Thanksgivng, but I think that's how it's gonna have to be this year.

I will be the happiest scrapper in TX once I get the pink tree set up in my home office!!!!! :D It is FAB U LOUS!!!!
I've been looking at the lavender one at Walmart! It's small (what we need in this house) and I think the color is fab! I know that I will be overruled, but it's still so cool!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Wow... I miss a couple days and it's like reading an entire book here to get all caught up!! Whoa!! You girls stay sooo busy..... now, any of you wanna get busy cleaning my house, decorating and all that jazz to get ready for a ton of family coming for next week? Eeek!!
Been having this problem a lot lately as I'm just not on the computer all the time! Darn bedroom is so bloody cold!

Kaylin got her first college acceptance letter already! yay!! It's just, as she called it .. "her back up plan" school..... but she's soooooooooooooooo excited!!! Her first choice is Fresno State, so I have my fingers crossed for her!! The schools are accepting 40% less than this current year due to budget cuts, but they have 56% increase in applications than this current year too.... YIKES!!!!
Congrats to Kaylin! But I'm right there with you! I'm thinking we might be faced with a similar situation some time down the road. DD is not yet 4 and already reading words! Although, not yet a "good" reader, I know when it clicks she's gonna just take off!

With all your stories I would have to say, she's had a pretty good role model herself! If she wants to travel, she could come here and I could help keep an eye on her! Alaska uses a lot of traveling nurses.

so question for all of you computer geeks and/or computer geek spouses :D

Here you go Chris, a direct quote from my DH:
"If you find a cheaper battery, compare battery type. The cheaper batteries may be ni-cad (nickel-cadium) which is an older type and may provide less of a run-time and fewer charge cycles. Charge cycles being how many times you can charge up the battery and then deplete the battery.

New battery technology may use nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). Bear in mind that the HP 12-cell battery you list may be more expensive because it is considered an EXTENDED battery. (Extended beyond the expected life of a STANDARD battery for that laptop which may be an 8 or 9 cell battery instead of 12-cell.

Generally, I like to buy from the manufacturer, but if your budget is tight, then some other vendor may fit better. Just be aware of battery type when you do go looking."

As for possible vendors he listed: Batteries R Us, CDW (great online source he uses all the time), and HP directly.

HTH!

Well, aren't you clever? That's great news for Kay!

yeah it is!!! Her Markers were way low already after her first treatment!

Oh gosh that is terrific news for Kay! I am sure she's so happy to be just about done with all of that chemo stuff and now she can concentrate on other, more fun things. Sandy, your hair looks great! All 9 or 10 of them.... hehe :-)

Why Thank You! I can't decide whether I should have a side path or a middle path? Any ideas?

found Spike... somehow this beast who does not do stairs managed to get into the basement... somehow negotiation 9 stairs... we can only assume he fell down them all.

Phew! I was having visions of waking up with him on my chest!

Yikes, that must have been really scarey Renee!!! Wow! Glad you're ok!

   I'm on Yahoo and no one has showed me the new kit!  ... ........or have they and I've just forgotten?

I thought I was your only friend!:cry::cry: But I'm still your fav, right? Right?

uh uh!!! I am!! Right Chris????

Ooooh I forgot to mention. I just got done watching My Sister's Keeper. I think I cried for the last half of the movie. Darn tear-jerkers!

Oh!!! Love tear jerker's adding it to my movie list!

OK guys! No slumber Twilight parties without me! I don't care where it is, I want to come! (Of course, since the temps aren't much higher today than yesterday I will go just about anywhere right now! I love the snow, but this is the earliest they have ever had this kind of cold weather. Usually we get about a week in late January or February, never in November!)

I get to go to a Teaching Math training this afternoon. I've been told we will have lots of fun because this gal is really into the hands on games teaching. Although it has to be games that nobody loses! Any body got ideas on how to convince these boys they don't have to be exactly the same all the time? And that life doesn't always mean you win? She has an iPod, so I guess I could see if there's anything to go with it. The only thing she's asked for is a laptop, but we told her we weren't getting one of those until she goes to college, because that's what we bought her sister for graduation. I may do a GC if I can't come up with anything.

I have a 15 yr old niece and face the same quandry as you... my decision this year.. girls day out...we're going to lunch, going to her fav store for some severe shopping, and then maybe a movie after....depends on how ragged we are...

So, best of both worlds.... good one on one time, conversation, clothes and a chick flick. ( I will then take the majority of items home to wrap but let her keep one or two to use before the holiday) and if she doesn't see anything she lkes, then she can pick a store and we'll get a GC.

How's that for covering all my bases ?

They actually cry if the other is a point ahead of them in a game! The beasts here were like that for quite a while.. particularly the boys... Luckily playing comptetive sports kinda deadened these issues.. You can use this to your advantage.. yes it hurts to not come in first,,, but sometimes the other makes better choices, works a bit harder, pays better attention... and no matter how good you are at something, you will meet someone who is better ! That is LIFE ! Not everyone is equally good at everything.. do your best and be proud of the effort and enjoy the differences!

Unfortunately, as mothers, we never want to see our kids suffer because they "failed" or "lost"... but it IS the best teacher.. and IMHO, NOT allowing them to cope with it doesn't help prepare them for life's diaappointments and failures as they get older and the situations bigger. Failure teaches us how to improve by working harder, being creative, looking at a problem from a different angle, managing time better, digging deeper and finding the tenacity/discipline to see a job through to the end. Dealing positively witih a small Failure/dissapointment and overcoming them, will do a much better job of creating a healthy adult self esteem.

Positive adult guidance and support are crucial, as you know. But as parents, I don't think we should allow our kids to think everything is equal.. no one wins, no one loses.. because that is a lie ....

So I guess in answer to your question= someone is gonna cry and have to deal with it while you help them see where there could be improvment and how to accomplish that.

And yes, I have a myriad of horror stories accumulated over the years on just this ! LOL! But they all survived, are all independent and all have the tenacity of bulldogs !

ok it didn't turn out to be 5 hours.... but its semi good news. Apparently the camera's parts have been put in, and they are still in the process of testing the camera to make sure that its 100% before they release it.

The service centre in Dubai, also won't release the camera to the dealer in Dubai to ship to me since it was received from their service centre in Muscat. So they will send it back to the service centre in Muscat and I need to collect it from there!

I'm really stressing badly now. Our weekend is Thursday / Friday, Dubai's weekend is Friday / Saturday, so that means they will only be looking at my camera again on Sunday. If they are happy with it, maybe they will send it to Muscat on Monday, which means maybe Tuesday / Wednesday it will arrive there!!!! The wedding is THURSDAY and we leave on Friday!!!!

Please, please send positive thoughts so that I can get my camera back in time. I know its a trivial thing to ask for, but I really am desperate!

Sandy, good vibes and mojo going out for ya!! I hope your camera comes back working 100% and in time for the wedding!

Stitch.....I use to buy for my siblings and their wives and kids, and for DH's siblings & their spouses and kids. Well, I decided not to do this anymore because it was getting rather pricey (DH has a total of like 15 siblings alone.... not including their spouses and their kids). So I just made it known that I was only buying for the children (including their children, not just our own), and that was that.... never another word said about it.

Good luck!

Sandy, that is really cutting it close. I've got my fingers crossed and sending good vibes your way. Good luck!

Okay, girls, I need some advice. What is the most tactful way to tell someone you'd rather not exchange Christmas gifts. We are trying to pare down our Christmas list and there are 3 names/families that we exchange gifts with just because we have for years, but there's really no reason to continue. How should I handle it?

I had this situation with friends of ours. When I broached the subject, she was SO glad, because she had been feeling the same way.

Our families got so big, we felt like we were working for birthdays and Christmas. We initiated the *18 and out* rule. I would approach the situation as stated above (Sands/Shana).

Well, I sure hope that's the response I get!

Ah, I'm soooooo glad you dropped in and answered! I have been feeling that I need to just let them lose and "use it". Of course, we have to work with the winner too and help them to learn compassion at the same time. (yee gads, these boys are competitive!) The biggest problem is getting them to just keep playing.

The training yesterday was not quite as good as I'd hoped. The only thing I really took from it was our discussion about the loosing. The one thing she added: have them track their wins so that they can see over time that they each win about the same amount of times, just different days and maybe different things.

Thanks again!

Michele, I was going to say the same as Crys. When the boys were born my entire family came for Christmas. We had always exchanged gifts but over those last years we had really begun exchanging money, mostly in the form of gift cards. Well, it was getting so hard to choose good gifts that I really wanted to stop. While I had them all together I got the courage and brought it up, and to my surprise they all felt the same way.

Everyone knows that this year has been bad and I think at least 90% of the people out there would love to here: We really need to cut back and would not expect you to continue either. I'm sure you will get a positive response.

ok it didn't turn out to be 5 hours.... but its semi good news.

I know its a trivial thing to ask for, but I really am desperate!:yippee:thoughts, :yippee:thoughts,:yippee:thoughts... this is NOT a trivial thing to wish for ! I hope everything goes well for you and the camera arrives 100% functional and safe and sound !

Thanks again!(wipes sweat from brow...) I'm glad you read that the way I intended it to sound... definitely not intended to sound stiff but.. well you know what I mean.. If you decide to chart win/losses, let them know that a "quit" makes a bigger black mark on the chart...and that getting mad and quiting won't give them a chance to make a "comeback" and possibly win...

Compassion in winning is at times a more difficult concept to understand. A poor winner ( goading and teasing the other) is poorer than a poor loser. Both positions need to be "graceful".. (for lack of a better word) and you know with boys they do like to goad and tease and will do it behind your back and out of your sight.!

Tim one time was busting Buddy's chops about how he had hit so many runs in while Buddy had had a bad day... Poor Bud was in tears and Tim was merciless....so I forced them both outside and made Tim work with Bud for an hour on better batting skills, technique etc... While neither was happy with me, I made the point that if Tim thought he was so much better, then he could work with and help his brother....MORAL: If you think you're so much better, help the other improve. ( they were 9 and 6 at the time )

Sorry to hear your teaching lessons weren't as good as you hoped ! That stinks and I know you were looking forward to it, too.

RE CHRISTMAS GIFTS: My personal feelings have always been that the "reason for the season" has been lost in too much commercialism. This year in particular, with costs spiraling and lowering economy many are cutting back to a more managable level.. I think we may finally be breaking the "keeping up with everyone else" syndrome. That being said, I'm sure that speaking openly to the family, we will ALL find that everyone feels the same way...keep the holiday gifts within our OWN immediate family, and CELEBRATE the holiday with the extended family by being together, feasting and having fun..

Amen on the family time! And now that we are near some family, we get to have some for the holidays! Yipee! :yippee::yippee::yippee:

That's a great idea on making the gloater help the other one. I hope it works, but not sure if the idea will sink in as they seem to love whispering the answers anyway! And of course I read it with your intent fully intact! I was hoping you would chime in!

Good morning girls!!!! Happy Friday! What is everyone up to today? I am going to have lunch with my friend today and then we are going to this thing called Holiday Happening, which is a bunch of vendors at the Civic Center selling Christmas gifts, clothes, yummy things to eat. It is put on by the Junior League and helps the charities they sponsor. Should be fun.

Here's a funny for you:

I'm going to need bail money soon. I'm about to strangle my computer. I was working on a layout and hadn't saved in a few minutes and PSE shut down!!! Ugh!!! And it was for the Sunday Scrappers challenge with Stitchie's word art!:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Hi ladies! How have you all been?? I've taken a break from life and have been reading and just trying to get my life back to what feels normal! I think I am finally getting there! My house has stayed clean for a week and the kids are getting back on schedule. I really am just shocked how much life was thrown upside down when DS went to the hospital. But things are going better now! No way I'll ever catch up on everyone so I hope you are all doing really good.

I'm SO excited for Christmas, I think because it's a change and I'm feeling better!! I went to the New Moon movie at midnight (today :)) I am so tired. I got home and was just going to sleep and DS woke up so I was up with him for a while. The show was better than Twilight, but still a bit cheesy.

Welcome to my world! :o I had another crash last night after 1½ hrs. of intense layout work, without saving. When will I learn? :annoyed: :annoyed: :help: :help: CS3 and Vista just do NOT play well together.   And it usually seems like I'm doing the simplest thing when it crashes, such as draggng an element from the kit to the workspace. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr................it just makes my blood boil!

And what really gets my goat is that my older son tried so hard to get me to buy a Mac when I *upgraded*!  The money I "saved" has been spent ten times over on BP meds! :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

Hi, everybody else! :D

Rene and Crys, I hate it when that happens. Sorry you lost your layouts. Hope you can re-do without too much trouble. Rene, do you have Vista? I'm not overjoyed with Vista. I keep having trouble with my embroidery program shutting down for no reason at all. It's often when I am scrolling through folders looking for a design. I called tech service and you know what they said? Trying slowing down, you're probably going too fast for it. Really? Sounds crazy to me but I'm starting to notice that when PSP shuts down on me, it's usually when I'm doing too much too fast. Anyway, call us if you need the bail money Rene!

And have fun at the Junior League shopping event. We have one of those here but I've never been.

HEather, I'm so glad to hear your life is getting back to normal and you're finding time to relax and enjoy yourself.

DD had her first HS swim meet of the season last night. It started an hour and a half late, which was grueling, but once it started it was pretty exciting. The boys and girls teams both won!
