Oh, btw, Chris... whatever happened to that Cobalt kit you were getting ready to post? You sure like to leave a girl hanging!!! :D
shots, shots and more shots happened. LOL We now have over 400 doses in the pharmacy and Heaven Forbid they actually give us some extra hours to give all of said shots. I worked both yesterday and today, plus had Pack meeting, and Relief Society Enrichment night yesterday, not to mention all of the swim team practices (hate when it is too cold and dark for them to walk over by themselves), mom stuff etc etc and OH MY HECK!!!! So the other day I started out doing a kit for an upcoming CD and it totally headed a different direction than I intended, so it doesn't fit w/ the CD but that is ok cuz I LOVE it! Just wish it were done. So anyway in the few spare moments I have had, I keep working on it to see how it comes out. I kid you not I have had NO idea what is coming next, it is totally different color/style/elements everything than I had planned. Holler if anyone wants to take a peek. We are going to New Moon in an hour, but I will see if I can get the LO up and the kit at least on its way into the store. :D But Vintage is up next in Goodies, then Cobalt, oh that means I better get the challenge posted today too. :D
Did I tell you all that they changed the state law so we can now do the younger kids too? So I gave the 3 younger ones their shots, plus several of my BFF's kids too. Seriously never ending is it?! :help::help::help::help:

oh yeah and stitchie wahoo on the swimming. Lex was looking at the State Qualifying times last night and she is only 2-3 seconds off on a couple of her races. She was pumped about that. That is another kit I have rattling around in my head, a Doodles in Swimming kit. Don't know how many other people will like it but I know I will get lots of use out of it!

Welcome to my world! :o I had another crash last night after 1½ hrs. of intense layout work, without saving. When will I learn? :annoyed: :annoyed: :help: :help: CS3 and Vista just do NOT play well together.   And it usually seems like I'm doing the simplest thing when it crashes, such as draggng an element from the kit to the workspace. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr................it just makes my blood boil!
And what really gets my goat is that my older son tried so hard to get me to buy a Mac when I *upgraded*!  The money I "saved" has been spent ten times over on BP meds! :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
Hi, everybody else! :D
PSE6 and Vista don't play well together either. And it will go along for a long time and work great, but then when I scan in some photos, then I start having problems again. Gary says he's read that Vista has issues with the scanning.
ReneT
11-20-2009, 04:26 PM
Rene and Crys, I hate it when that happens. Sorry you lost your layouts. Hope you can re-do without too much trouble. Rene, do you have Vista? I'm not overjoyed with Vista. I keep having trouble with my embroidery program shutting down for no reason at all. It's often when I am scrolling through folders looking for a design. I called tech service and you know what they said? Trying slowing down, you're probably going too fast for it. Really? Sounds crazy to me but I'm starting to notice that when PSP shuts down on me, it's usually when I'm doing too much too fast. Anyway, call us if you need the bail money Rene!
And have fun at the Junior League shopping event. We have one of those here but I've never been.
HEather, I'm so glad to hear your life is getting back to normal and you're finding time to relax and enjoy yourself.
DD had her first HS swim meet of the season last night. It started an hour and a half late, which was grueling, but once it started it was pretty exciting. The boys and girls teams both won!
Yes, I have Vista and I loathe it!!!! Except for the fact that you can open more than one window in Explorer. I like that option.
Yay for the swim teams!!!!!!

Hi ladies! How have you all been?? I've taken a break from life and have been reading and just trying to get my life back to what feels normal! I think I am finally getting there! My house has stayed clean for a week and the kids are getting back on schedule. I really am just shocked how much life was thrown upside down when DS went to the hospital. But things are going better now! No way I'll ever catch up on everyone so I hope you are all doing really good.
I'm SO excited for Christmas, I think because it's a change and I'm feeling better!! I went to the New Moon movie at midnight (today :)) I am so tired. I got home and was just going to sleep and DS woke up so I was up with him for a while. The show was better than Twilight, but still a bit cheesy.
Heather, so glad you are feeling better and less stressed and that things are going better. I think the holidays will be good for you, fun family time.

Stitchie and Chris - congrats on the swimming! I love swim meets...the smell of the chlorine reminds me of when I was swimming!
Heather - I'm so glad things are getting back to normal for you. It's tough after something happens to get back in the routine, but it sounds like you're getting there now!
Rene and Crys - sorry about the crashes. :( Macs look so nice when you think about that, but they're just so darn expensive!
So I spent the day getting my dad's stuff in order. Had to get him excused from jury duty and teach him how to use his navigation system again. Sometimes I feel like screaming, but I know this isn't something he likes or can help. He gets so he's on the verge of tears when he doesn't know...breaks my heart. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for him. I have noticed though that it's worse when he falls asleep watching TV on the couch instead of in his bed, so I think I'm going to have to wake him up if that happens and get him to go to the bedroom. He seems better with a good night's rest.
I have my interview for SSI/disability over the phone on Tuesday. Wish me luck. They always ask all those questions you have trouble remembering. LOL I'm just amazed at how quickly they've gotten back to me this time. Hopefully it will all go that quick, but I know that's not going to happen. LOL

I know it's hard Shana. I almost am in tears listening to you talk about your dad's struggles because it brings back memories of my dad's struggles. But bless you for being there for him and helping him through this hard time. Just remember to take time for you and take care of you.
Good luck with the SSI appt Tues. I know you're apprehensive about it because of what happened before, but I have all the faith in you girl!!!

LOL! there you are. You know I was just heckling you and not seriously rushing you right? It must be crazy giving shots. I went up to the Target pharmacy counter the other day to get some sudafed and when she saw me standing there, she asked, are you waiting for a shot? There were quite a few people hanging around waiting.
No New Moon for me. TEll us how you like it.

She didn't swim as hard or as much this past summer because she was lifeguarding. She's been feeling out of shape so far this season. But she really turned it on at the meet last night. It should be a great confidence booster. She is the star butterflier for the team and last night she won first in that and her time was just short of her best time last year.

Oh dang... sorry to post separately so many times but I forgot to tell you...
I talked to a friend today about not trading Christmas gifts. She and I are good friends but we don't hang out with our families much anymore. Anyway I told her it would mean a lot more to me if we got together for a girls night out or if they came over for an evening during Christmas break rather than buying gifts. She said that sounded like a great idea to her. I am feeling so much better. She was the one I thought would be the hardest. The other ones are DH's cousins we never even see.

Remember that employee I told ya'll about that Gary had to fire a few months ago? Well when he left, he left some of his stuff in our warehouse because it was big stuff like seats to a car, a car motor, etc. So Gary told him to give us some notice when he wanted to pick it up. He decided he was coming tonight around 6 so Gary had it all off the big shelving stuff and put on two pallets. So he got there, walked in with an attitude to get his stuff. It took him about an hour to get it loaded. Gary used the forklift because we didn't want him using it so we wouldn't be liable if anything happened. He got the engine on some kind of a lift thing and was going to roll it up a ramp into the trailer he brought. He was having a problem doing that because it was so heavy, so Gary and our other guy went to help him, and he got rude about it and said he didn't need their help. So we just shut the warehouse door and left him outside with his motor. Then he has the audacity to walk back into the office saying he was going to use our bathroom to wash his hands!!! Are you even believing that? So he washed his hands and left without a word. WOW!!! So we were both pretty stressed out and angry when it was over. We had to go to Starbucks and get some coffee so we could sit and process it all. :D

I think it just proves he's really bitter about it. I really would like to know if he's working by now and where, but he doesn't have any friends because of how he acts and his uncontrollable temper and acting like he's royalty, so there's no way for us to know, no one to ask. I just don't see in this economy how he could be doing very well, especially when he had worked for us for 10 years and couldn't give us as a reference when applying for a new job, or even several of the people he associated with through our business because they knew how he acted and how he had treated them, so he couldn't give them as references either. Plus I'm sure he's really angry that he was denied unemployment because of the reasons he was fired -especially the reason of using our work truck during company time to go to his exwife's house and try to break in! Sorry, just needed to vent.

Well kids, just got back from seeing NEW MOON......and I must be honest and say my reviews are mixed.... it follows the book pretty well..( although there is a fight scene in Volterra that is NOT in the book and a scene with Victoria and Harry) but the film loses some of the subtle nuances from the book which could be easily conveyed through simple effects or better acting performance. T. Lautner does a nice job with his character. Bella seems 'flat", monotone and heavily reliant on "bambi eyes" rather than a slighly more expression-full perforamnce. don't see too much of Edward and he does look pretty tortured throughout except at the end. Although this may seem negative, it's certainly not... I enjoyed the movie ( the 2 hours goes by pretty fast) but it is not on my OMG I'D SEE THAT 10 TIMES list. The special effects are decent/good, the Volterra/Volturi sequence is good, the movie moves right along although a bit choppy is some parts ( I may have felt this way from readng the books... so I felt like the director had said let's film chapters 12-16 and then skip to 22-26..) I definitely think the media hype may have raised my expectations a bit. So while it was an enjoyable move, and I felt that i got my money's worth, it was not the best movie I've ever seen..

Alice she is portrayed so perfectly to what I pictured and mmmmmmm Taylor  defintely a hottie! I want to know what is with the bulgy vampire eyes? It's like they want to make sure you notice if they are red or amber. Totally agree w Carolyn is the subtle nuances that are missing it is like they think the audience. Is too dumb to pick up on them so they have to make everything over the top and in your face.

I didn't put up with him for 10 years, Gary did. I pretty much didn't care for him almost from the moment I met him, but Gary avoids conflict as long as he possibly can. That's his personality, so it took a lot for Gary to get to the point that he had to fire him. The last year was the worst and Gary was not eating well or sleeping. Finally he had enough. So hopefully this will be the last we see or hear from him. We may occasionally run into them at the Tech games because they have seats one section over from us, but so far this year we haven't.

Is too dumb to pick up on them so they have to make everything over the top and in your face.I think this was a remnant from the Twilight film where the effects budget was much more limited.. and the eyes are a now recognizable feature, the New Moon effects crew had little to do but go with the flow. If you have read the books, you will find the movie easier to follow as you already know about the "missing" parts.. which makes that "jumpy" story line easier to to follow. Don't forget too, this movie was basically made to BE over the top and appeal to a much younger generation of movie goer who have always had everything over the top and in your face, as opposed to an older movie goer who is looking for a well made, subtly nuanced, smoothly moving film..

oh could be on the eyes. and yeah agree about the appeal goal. I have read the books about 5 times and totally love them, that is my problem I think, I have very definite ideas about how I imagine them from the books and then the director goes and messes it up. It was even the case in HP books too, although not quite so much. Still wish they would tone down the eyes a bit :)

Yay for your Utes Chris!!!! Yay for my Red Raiders!!! 41-13 against Oklahoma U!!!! We may now be bowl eligible!
I liked New Moon. It still has the cheesiness factor, but not as bad as the first movie I thought. There was a collective gasp in the theater when Jacob was shirtless for the first time. :D The main thing that bothered me with the movie is that it seems the only way Bella knows how to express her emotions is through her heavy breathing. Very annoying. And of course Edwards constant attempt at brooding doesn't quite work. Other than that, Emily and I loved it! Gary said "I don't get it" but we told him that's because he hasn't read the books. On the way home he kept wanting me to tell him what happens in the other books, so I did finally. I think that just proves he's more interested than he wants to admit!

Hello All. How is everyone doing?
My son has the whole week off next week. They usually get Wed, Thurs and Friday but with the state schools budget cut the district decided to take Mon and Tues as well. Now we have 2 less school days this year.
Hubby and son went out this morning to collect for the Boy Scout/Cub Scout food drive. They collected quite a bit of food. They walked a lot of blocks so they were tired when they got home.
Has anyone seen the new Christmas Carol movie with Jim Carrey? Just wondering what other people thought about the movie.

OMG! I just got an email from ArtsCow. Sands, your book is laying open in the photo!!!
I get their emails, but I haven't ordered from them yet. Are they good quality? I'm nervous ordering from them because I'm scared they won't get here before Christmas. I worked on my parents album yesterday until my brain was fried. I got 8 pages done and I think (I hope) they were the hardest ones to do.

Hey everyone! How are we all doing today?
So I got to go see New Moon yesterday. I loved it. The only part I didn't like was Kristen's "acting." It seems she's the same any movie she's in...breathing heavy and tripping over her words. LOL Hello Taylor....now I see why people may be team Jacob! LOL I cried, of course. I was hoping they'd leave a certain part of the book out of the movie, but bam...there it was. Made me cry AGAIN. I can't read the book as much as I read the others because that part gets me so worked up...long story. But anywho...I definitely want to see it again and I can't wait for the DVD! Also, I can't wait for Rob's film Remember Me. Did anyone else see the preview? I was lucky enough to be able to read the script and it's an amazing movie. One more thing I can't wait for - June 30th, 2010 - ECLIPSE! hehehehe

Hi Dorene! Yay for your son being out of school all week! No I haven't seen The Christmas Carol yet. It looks pretty good.
Michelle, I ordered some stuff from Artscow earlier this year, although not photo book, and I was pleased with the quality.
Shana, yes I saw the Remember Me preview. It looks pretty good. I didn't know the release date for Eclipse had already been decided. Yay!!!! Did you see the Dear John preview with Channing Tatum? That book is my favorite of all of Nicholas Spark's books, so I'm super excited to see the movie.

Hey gals!! Yesterday was kinda buys, we had to replace the engine in DH's beater car so my brother and dh took out and replaced the engine in a day! That was a job! Today was our primary program at church, so all the kids had a little part and then me and another mom and our kids all sang a song. The kids had the first part, the moms had the second verse and then we sang out parts all together. DH cried, he said it was really good. So they had a lot of fun doing that.
My computer is so crappy. Not sure what is going on, but NO mouse works. The main one quit working so we got out the USB one and that quit working, so got out another USB one, that I know works and NOTHING! Good thing I have the Bamboo cause that is the only thing that is working. I'm catching on to it really quick now. I think I may need to start looking for a new computer. This one is acting really bad lately!

Okay I need to vent. My dad went over to my brother's today to play pool. They usually drink when they do so, and usually my mom or I go with him to drive him home. My mom is out of town and I wasn't able to go today so I asked my dad to please not drink much. He promised he would only have one or two. I not only asked him not to drink much so that he would be able to safely drive home, but because when he does drink, he's more confused the next day. I don't want to say that to him and make him feel badly, or to ask him not to go have fun as long as he can safely, although I did ask him if he could hold of until during the week to go. Well, anyway...I got a call around 8 from my brother asking me to tell dad that I was okay here by myself. Yeah, I'm okay by myself...I'm a big girl, but my wanting him to come home was so I don't have a confused father on my hands all day tomorrow. Needless to say, my dad had drank more than he probably should have, and my brother and sister were trying to get him to stay there tonight. I'm glad that they took his keys, but UGH. Now I'm worried he's going to have a horrible day tomorrow...and they're not the ones that have to deal with him losing his temper all day because of how confused he is! I feel like I want to tear my hair out right now or break down and cry, but I can't. I'm so sick of them dictating from the sidelines...talking about how I'm so spoiled...and then never being there to be the ones that have to take care of him on a daily basis!

Have you told them that he's more confused and difficult to deal with when he drinks? They know he has dementia right? Why would they allow him to drink at their house? I would just say there's no alcohol in my house! Maybe there's some kind of article online you could print or get his doctor to talk to them about it, someone other than yourself to explain it to them.

Thanks guys. I've been sitting here steaming and worrying for hours. I think I'll talk with my mom about maybe sitting them down and explaining that he is more confused after drinking. Unfortunately, it's not easy to talk with my brother about things like that...it's usually his way or the highway. It's just really frustrating when it seems like you're the only one actually taking the time to deal with it and help dad through this. It's not easy for him...and usually everyone else will either laugh it off or walk away. I know it's hard to deal with for them too, but it's hard for my dad too. I just feel like no one puts themselves in his shoes with this whole thing.
Rene I can't wait to see that pink tree! I still don't understand Gary's aversion to having it on display where the whole family can appreciate it!

Maybe he would be more open to it if it came from your mom like you said.
The pink tree is decorated and shining brightly! Drew said "That hurts my eyes!" He also calls it my "white trash tree". No one appreciates good bling!
Drew had a couple friends over playing video games, so the 3 of them helped Gary put up the big tree this evening, so it's all ready for me to decorate tomorrow! I'm going to get up early and go to the grocery store to get my Thanksgiving stuff, and then come home and deck the halls some more. I'm beginning to wonder if the lime green stuff I got for the tree is going to work with the red and gold. I think it could go either way right now. But if it doesn't work, I'll just take it back. I still have the receipts. Tomorrow will tell.

PSE6 and Vista don't play well together either. And it will go along for a long time and work great, but then when I scan in some photos, then I start having problems again. Gary says he's read that Vista has issues with the scanning.
Thank heaven I don't do much scanning! That would just be one more thing for me to stress over.
Oh dang... sorry to post separately so many times but I forgot to tell you...
Most often, the things we build up in our minds do NOT compare with reality! Thankfully this worked out so pleasantly for you, Stitchie!
It's because I'm a mean DH and you keep threatening to put the pink tree in the living room!

Yeah its been very frustrating with several calls a week from me to the dealer, service centre in Muscat and Service centre in Dubai.
I'm very weary of those ads in Facebook!
Good luck, Sands. I hope you get your camera back asap!
Thanks Shana, as soon as the clock strikes 9:30 I'm going to call to see if the camera is in Muscat yet. When I called Dubai yesterday they said the courier guy was collecting it in the next half hour, which was the same story I got from Muscat yesterday. So I'm thinking I will pack today for Paris and rather go tomorrow, but I just need to know that the camera is there!
Oh! and as a point of interest. If anyone travels through the Middle East..... yes the camera's may be a bit cheaper, but unless it has an International Warranty with it, its just not worth purchasing, as the warranty will only cover it in the Middle East. If you are say in US and bought the camera in Dubai, you have to send the camera back to Dubai to be repaired (if something goes wrong with it), and sometimes the cost of sending the camera back is far more expensive than paying for the repairs yourself...... just a bit of useless information. The things you learn! Oh! and vice versa! If you bought a camera in US and are now living in Middle East (like a friend of ours) the camera has to be repaired in US.

However, in my "non computer time " I did learn several new camera things which I had be neglecting... learned to set custom WB... Originally, reading the MANUAL it seemed like I would need three hands to do it , so I figured" NAHHHHHHHHHHHHH... too much effort and I'll screw something up..." but decided to take the plunge and yes, I can do it with one hand.. custom set the picture controls a bit better, figured out how to tether the external flash to a sync cord for off camera flash.. ( and now I'm lusting for a radio popper or a pocket wizard, and another flash unit - dang this is getting expensive ! LOL ) So, I did put my time to good use, I guess.. but the animals around here are now flash blind . haha

So do you have to set WB for every shot? When I did my underwater photography course we had to do that for every shot. Maybe cos the conditions changed every metre

Maybe cos the conditions changed every metre :think:Only if the lighting is difficult i.e. mixed lighting from overhead lights/tv/background lamps...most homes are a jumble of lighting which no camera can compensate for UNLESS you can do a CWB. Same holds true for underwater... water depth, sunlight vs moving clouds, .. I can see where things could change in a heartbeat... but all your images are INCREDIBLE so you must be a pro at doing it. My problem is REMEMBERING to do it at the appropriate time ! DOH!!!

It is suuuuuuuch a pain to change the WB on my camera for every shot down there, so I just use the auto underwater setting :D. But having said that, one still needs to know what you are doing. I've compared shots with a few people with the same camera and settings as me and they have always commented about mine :)

Hey Ladies, how is everyone doing? Sorry I haven't been on too much the last few days. It got very busy around here this weekend. For some reason I don't get notified by email whenever someone makes a new posting, at least not every time. So by the time I do get one I am pages and pages behind! Can someone catch me up really quick??
Even though I was contemplating giving my mom the hint about donating to the SLR fund, I saw a commercial for the new D5000 by Nikon the other day and I am in love with it (hint hint Lisa in case my mom asks). The specs look really good on it and also it has a a new multi-angle LCD screen that rotates 180 degrees and Marco thinks it would really help overcome some of my mobility challenges and he said a student in his new class has one and she really likes it.
Well that's pretty much about it from here. It's cold, the dogs are all good...Cassie went into heat early so that's been fun, not! Getting ready for Turkey Day and Christmas. Yep, that's pretty much it.

LOL...I guess I should have clarified that my LOTD fame was from a few months ago so it's not new news. I'm still over the moon though to be in "the club" so to speak.
Chris, don't throw me out of your thread, but yes I am a supporter of the Blue. My grandpa would be rolling over in his grave and my dad would more than likely disown me if I was a Utes fan!
One of the main "cool" features of the D5000 is it has a multi-angle LCD screen that you can move 180 degrees! This will really help me since I am sitting all the time and I often miss the shot I want because I can't get the camera where I really want it. With the D5000 I can actually position better so that I can use the live view and position the LCD down below the camera body so to speak but still have the camera in more of the position I want. It's kind of hard to describe, does that make sense?
Christine
11-23-2009, 11:51 PM
yeah it does except one issue, does this one shoot thru the LCD? didn't we have this discussion already? that the mirror gets in the way and therefore you don't ever actually see what you will be shooting on the LCD, you only see the preview of the shot AFTER you shoot. and for the cameras that have it so you can shoot thru the LCD you are back to the same shutter delay. At least I think that is what Carolyn said. Which is all fine if it helps you get the shot you want, just want to make sure you are aware :)
I am still thinking about the kicking out of my thread thing. Just don't be changing your avi to anything blue and we can probably keep you :D

I think Sands' strobes make a HUGE difference too, I know her lightening is soooooo much better than mine.
:D... I don't always use my strobes, unless I'm at like 22m or so. If I do, the shot is overexposed. So most of my shots are just with my internal flash.
I am still thinking about the kicking out of my thread thing. Just don't be changing your avi to anything blue and we can probably keep you :D

On this morning's TODAY Show they showed the christmas lights in Paris......what a sight. Think I could go along in your suitcase??? Will you be in Paris long? AM catching up on the posts and found the answer. If you get to see the Eiffel Tower at night, try to be there on the hour as the lights blink. We took a tour one night, had dinner at the tower then sailed down the river as the lights in the city were coming on and ended up at the moulin rouge for a show(they don't allow cameras in....have to check them on your way in). Yikes! Now I'm scared to go on my FB. My kids computer picked up a virus a coupld of weeks ago. I wonder if that's what hit them. There should be a special kind of torture for people that create viruses.

[COLOR=darkorchid][B]PQ Fran had her computer go wonky and also thinks Facebook was the culprit. Her icons were reproducing and rearranging themselves, willy-nilly!
We are thinking it's from one of the adds found on the right side of any of the pages... and yes, I had an icon appear out of nowhere ! My icons howerver did not reproduce/rearrange themselves- I wish that was all they did.. but anything out of the ordinary is totally frustrating ! And potentially expensive to repair. I kept getting so many popups to web pages blocked by my anti virus program it made using the computer almost impossible.

Yay, finished the main tree, got the nativity scene set up, mantel hung with stockings, ect. Woot!
Caro, can you give me any suggestions/pointers on taking photos of the tree? Lights in the room on, off? Settings to try, etc. Don't have a tripod yet since I'm hoping Santa brings it. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated! :)You'll be using a slow shutter speed so you definitely ned to prop the camera on a box or something... start with your shutter speed at about 1/30 second and adjust from there. You can use either shutter priority or aperture priority but just watch for where your shutter speed is! And keep the iso as low as possible otherwise you will be all noised out !

Thanks for that link Caro on the D5000. I'll definitely have to take a look at it.
Chris, I'm not quite sure about shooting through the LCD on the D5000. It says it has a live LCD/viewfinder....I think that means you get to see the shot as you take it and not after, right? LOL...I guess once I look at that link Carolyn sent I'll know for sure. Oh, and if staying a Gundi girl means no posting of blue then that's doable ;)
Sands, I hope you have a blast in Paris. I have to admit I am incredibly jealous! I've always wanted to go there. Make sure to take some cool pics from underneath the Eiffel Tower. I don't know why, but those are always some of my favorite shots to see.
Well today it's just me and Cassie hanging out. Normally on Tuesdays I have a gal that comes over to help clean and to make it less chaotic I have Sophie and Mac go to doggie Daycare and that way I get to scrap as much as I can. However, Amy called today saying she couldn't come. This was after the kiddos had been dropped off so now it's just me and the "baby"...well, she's not so much a baby anymore now that she has gone into heat! I just have to keep her entertained for the next hour till DH gets home. Then I think I am going to go get my hair done since I haven't had it colored in ages!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

LOL...LIVE VIEW means exactly that.. you shoot using the LCD screen to frame you shot just as you would a point and shoot camera.... and the "lag" time will be the same as well... BUT it is a very handy option to have available for those shots which are at difficult angles or when physicality is limited. And by physicality I mean not only physical limitations, but when location prevents you from physically being able to get into the position you need to take the shot.........

So, Sorry, I've been away for so long. Many reasons... My brother, - his surgery was scheduled this week - but he chickened out - postponed it until after Thanksgiving.
And, I've just been down.
And, I've really been trying to finish processing all of my Grandmother's 1910 - 1930 historical photos. - I'm trying to do 10 a day...- which basically takes me a whole day to do.
I have 110 left to do.

Shana, can I ask you what kind of disability interview it was for? I know how hard those things can be and if it is for Social Security I can give you some major horror story advice if you want! I really got the shaft from them AFTER I was approved so I try and really forewarn everybody I know so they don't make the same mistakes I did...it's important for some people to have and it can be a wonderful thing, you just have to watch out for the idiots running the program! Ugh...okay, sorry I'll get off my soapbox now.
Sands, as always that's an awesome picture!
Rene - so glad Gary got you your tripod. What a wonderful hubby.
Okay, so I went to go get my hair highlighted and cut today. What was I thinking! Oh, I know, my mom offered to pay for it since it's been over a year since I've gotten it highlighted and since we can barely afford food at the moment I figured why bother, but then mom offered to pay for it so I took her up on her offer. So I'm not sure if I jinxed it by taking such a generous gift or just went to the wrong person! The gal I used to go to no longer lives here otherwise it wouldn't be a problem. It turned out way more blonde than I wanted! Now Thanksgiving is day after tomorrow and my hair is practically glowing yellow! It's not quite that bad, but you know it's bad when DH doesn't compliment it ON PURPOSE and agrees with you when you complain about how you don't like it (then again, he never has been one to sugarcoat things to spare my feelings, lol). I did get special shampoo tonight to help tone it down some. I'm just really ticked she didn't put the toner on it in the first place. I don't know if she was in a hurry or what and I kept telling her I wasn't sure I liked it. She said to give it a day or two, but I just don't know. Now I am wishing I would have listen to Christine and just left it the heck alone or even just added a bit of red low lights and went more as a redhead. it would fit this hair cut much better.
Okay, I'll stop whining now. Help though, anyone have any advice about how to tone it done some without going back to the salon?

Wow what a day!!! I got my camera and have taken a few test shots so it seems to be working. So since I was in Muscat I tried getting some other things done which one can't do where I am, and its just been very frustrating. The traffic is a real killer today. Its the start of the Eid Celebration for Muslims, and the Sultan has combined the National Day Holiday with the Eid Celebration Holiday so that everything will be closed for a whole week , lucky we will be in Paris :D.
Loads of pick ups / trucks / utes that have goats and cows on them too! During this celebration they will slaughter a cow / sheep / goat. They will light a fire at the bottom of a pit which is lined with rocks / stone The fire burns for 12 hours heating the rocks. They then put the fire out. They wrap the meat up in hessian sacks roll it in wire to keep it closed. They place the hessian sacks into the pit which is now like an oven, for 12 hours, then pull them out and the meat is cooked.
We were invited to witness the retrieving of the sacks the one year and I found it very very interesting. Because several families use the same pit, they each mark their sack of meat with and identifying item, from car registration plates, to hammers, to rolled up wire. It was quite amusing.
Once the meat is retrieved, the family get together and by now the woman would have cooked a rice mixture and made salads and everyone sits down to the meal.
Interesting huh?

I really like the comparisons as you can see specifics about the camera which are not always found int the tech specs sections... the big thing with the d5000 is the flexible lcd screen...
RE FLASH: using your external on TTL means the camera/flash combo will AUTOMATICALLY set the flash for correct exposure. I tend to just leave it there ! Nothing to "learn" and I LOVE SIMPLE !!! What I'm off to now is using MULTIPLE flashes which use the camera's metering system as the trigger. With a pocket wizard, I will need to adjust each flash manually, but with a radio popper, the camera's ttl metereing system will tell each flash how much light is needed to make for a correct exposure.... I called the guy in Muscat and he was very apologetic. He had removed it from the camera so that it didn't get "lost" in Dubai, and completely forgot he had taken off. Luckily they are all the same size, so I've taken the one off my film camera to use in the meantime.

Well, GundiGirls, I will be going MIA this afternoon until late Sun., or even possibly Mon. We always go to KY for Thanksgiving. Luckily, my sons' families go also, so I'll get to see all 6 grandkids! Am I blessed, or what? :D (My younger son, the firefighter, has to work Thanksgiving, though, so he will be missing. :()
Then we'll spend a couple of days at younger son's, as Ethan turns 2 on Sunday. Hopefully, I should come home with a whole raft of new photos. I've heard through the grapevine that even the twins will be at the dinner. Let's keep our fingers crossed...

Oh Kristie, that's so frustrating!!!! I'm so sorry you don't like it! Did the special shampoo tone it down any? I've had the same hair person since I moved to Lubbock 12 years ago, and in all that time, she's only messed my hair up once! The bad thing is that it was the day before mine and Gary's wedding, and there was no time for her to fix it. She cut it really blunt that time for some reason, and it looked horrible! LOL
:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: :yes::yes::yes::yes: Guess what I have in my grubby hands!!!!
YAY!!!! Sorry about the eyepiece though! Glad the other one will work for your trip.
Wow, he's awesome, maybe he can run a course for the perfect husband and my DH can attend :rofl::rofl::rofl:
:rofl::rofl:
Wow, that is interesting, especially the part about putting hammers and stuff in the bags of meat! :D
What are the Utes doing there? they need to be getting ready for a game not hauling goats and cows around. AAAHHHHHH maybe that is their conditioning :D :rofl
Oh Chris, I sooooooooo knew you were going to say that about the utes!
Have fun and a fabulous Thanksgiving Crys with your family and all those precious children!!!!

It is Social Security. I've heard a lot of horror stories and even have one of my own from the time I applied before. The woman doing my intake looked at me and nastily said "you're not disabled....why are you here?" That's exactly what you want to hear right out of the gate! LOL I'm hoping that they've become a bit more knowledgeable of mental illness since...because if that happens again I definitely won't sit there and say nothing like last time.
I'm so sorry about your hair. I had that happen to me once and it's awful! I would call and tell them that you want them to fix it.

Crys, have fun and enjoy all those grand kids.
Sands! I'm so glad you finally have your camera back. Sorry it's missing the eyepiece though. That picture is spectacular. Good luck with the wedding and have fun in Paris!
Kristie, sorry you're hair didn't turn out like you wanted but I know you're beautiful anyway.

Question question teacher. Anyone surprised? So does the TTL only work with P or A or S? I don't get how it would work for M.When you have your camera in A, S, P, M you are not changing the way the light meter works! You are telling your camera how you want it to expose the image by giving priority to aperture/shutter and letting the camera choose the other and meter the light for correct exposure. This information is sent to the flash so the flash will power out enough light.
External flashes CAN be set to Manual mode which, for lack of a better term, will "override" what the camera is telling it to do. While I am certainly in my learning curve infancy here, from what I've read and seen demonstrated, the use of MANUAL mode ON THE FLASH ITSELF is most often used when shooting with multiple off- camera flashes and using the camera in COMMANDER mode as the trigger. An SB600 CANNOT work as the trigger, you need an SB800 or 900 ( and need to maintain LINE OF SIGHT) OR a radio popper ( no line of sight needed). Using the radio popper will allow the camera's TTL function to work with ALL the flashes. Using a pocket wizard, you need to set each flash manually.
WHAT IS LINE OF SIGHT? Each flash has a small area where the infrared is located. The flash MUST be positioned in such a way that the infrared area on the camera can "see" the infrared area on the flash body and send the TTL information to it... hence Line of Sight...

For those being mia HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING and we'll catch up when you all return.
Sands.. sorry to hear about the eyepiece, but great you had another one ! Have a wonderful trip! Be safe and enjoy !
Kristie_UGH about the hair issue.. that is so the pits.. and I think you are correct in stating she was having a too busy day or something.. once you said you hated it she should have taken steps to fix the problem. Blonde does tone down somewhat but it takes a while.( either that or you get used to the glare.. LOL.. whichever comes first)
Crys,,, enjoy those grandbabies and hug 'em all up !

Every single evening
As I'm lying here in bed,
This tiny little Prayer
Keeps running through my head:
God bless all my family
Wherever they may be,
Keep them warm
And safe from harm
For they're so close to me.
And God, there is one more thing
I wish that you could do;
Hope you don't mind me asking,
Please bless my computer too.
Now I know that it's unusual
To Bless a motherboard,
But listen just a second
While I explain it to you, Lord.
You see, that little metal box
Holds more than odds and ends;
Inside those small compartments
Rest so many of my friends.
I know so much about them
By the kindness that they give,
And this little scrap of metal
Takes me in to where they live...
By faith is how I know them
Much the same as you.
We share in what life brings us
And from that our friendships grew.
Please take an extra minute
From your duties up above,
To bless those in my address book
That's filled with so much love.
Wherever else this prayer may reach
To each and every friend,
Bless each e-mail inbox
And each person who hits 'send'.
When you update your Heavenly list
On your own Great CD-ROM,
Bless everyone who says this prayer
Sent up to GOD..Com
Amen

Hey guys! I've been MIA for a few days as I've been sewing new bathrobes for the boys. With the holidays coming I knew there would be days they didn't dress right away and they needed robes the fit (the old ones are happily in DD's closet!) Well, I finally got the last one done last night. I've also been knitting sweaters for under the tree! Still have one more of those to do, but since I did the first one of the boys in about 2 weeks I'm feeling confident I will get the last one done in time. I did a knit poncho with matching scarf and hat for DD.
Debi - my prayers have been with you for a while. Thanks for dropping in to let us know how you are doing. Make sure to stop by from time to time and say hi.
Sands: Glad you got the camera back and sorry you didn't get the whole thing back! At least they didn't lose the piece.
Rene: Awesome hubby you have there!
Kristie: it will tone down quickly! I promise!
Carolyn: love the prayer!
There are pages and pages I haven't read, so please forgive what I've missed!

OK so here is the thing that I am confused about. So say you are on manual and you do the light meter and you get your meter all zero'd out. Now if you do the flash, it will be over exposed right? cuz it doesn't have the flash "flashing" when you took the light meter reading. That's why I was asking if it only works w/ P, S, and A.

Just stopping in to say HI! It's been busy here with me having Thanksgiving here and everything else that goes on here. My computer is broken, it kills the mouses!! Seriously, can a computer do that? We hav gone through 3 working mouses, that don't work any longer and I don't want to go buy another one just to see it quit working. So I don't know what is going on and I don't want to use my Bamboo on it anymore. I think it might be time for a new one. So I'm not on here as much anymore and miss you guys!! I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!!

Happy Dressing Day with a side of Turkey everyone! Can't you tell what is my favorite part of Thanksgiving :)
Rene - Congrats on LOTD! You go girl!
Lisa - Good luck with the Robes. Can't wait to see what the boys think of them. I think our next class should be a knitting class, what do you think?
Sands - Have fun in Paris
Crys - Drive safe this weekend and enjoy the South for me please!
Shana - Good luck with the SSDI thing. I truly sympathize with you! I wish I had some good advice for you...oh wait, I do! Document, document, document and never choose the call-in option to notify them of changes. That's what I did and that's why I'm in the mess I'm in. You can PM me if you want to hear the whole story.
Debbie, I too hope things get better for your brother and your family.
Thanks to everyone for your hair support :) I did run out at 10 p.m. last night and got some special shampoo and used it this morning. It helped some and I am hoping one or two more washings and it will tone down to just the right shade. I really don't have the time right now to go have her fix it so I am seeing how this shampoo works first. I just hope and pray any pics taken tomorrow turn out okay.
DH just finished the last batch of gluten-free cookies for one of our guests that is coming to dinner tomorrow. I have to say, they turned out to be the best PB cookies I've ever had! So now all that's left to do tomorrow is the sweet potato souffle and the green bean and blue cheese casserole. Mom's doing the dressing and turkey so I think we are all set for the big day. I'm actually excited for once for this holiday because we are having a total of about 12 people over, 3-4 of which are DH and I's friends so we are actually going to have an exciting/lively Thanksgiving for the first time in about 5 years! I love having tons off people around for the holidays. DH doesn't do well with large amounts of people so I am having him start on the Valium now!
I'm heading to bed. Pain meds for my hip have started to kick in and I can barely see straight right now....so much for my nerve block shot working out like I'd hoped :(

Wow - Rene! congrats on LOTD!
Shana - let us know how the interview goes. I went on one as a witness for a friend, and it was a disaster. They wouldn't even let me talk and every time she got into a nervous situation her problem would kick in and she couldn't talk straight. Of course, they always interpreted it as her not having a problem instead of seeing it for what it was. She finally qualified when welfare's "retraining" program actually failed and they couldn't find any job she was "qualified" to do. But then it was the welfare person talking on her behalf and not her having to prove she qualified.
Kristie - sent you an email. I'll teach that knitting class "cheap"! I've taught knitting before (a very long time ago!)
Everybody - Happy Thanksgiving!

You posed an interesting question and I did a little experiment. I have mentioned before that these cameras are "smart" and do so many things for us automatically. Previously I had mentioned how intelligent the TTL metering systen is in that the camera will AUTOMATICALLY relay information to the flash which in turn will send out JUST ENOUGH LIGHT to correctly expose an image...I took a series of images all set at the same aperture and iso in each of the modes: A,S.P,and M. I am only posting the results from the M and A here so you can see the results. THE RESULTS FOR THE S AND P MODES WERE EXACTLY THE SAME !
MANUAL METERING
IMAGE ONE: manual mode, no flash, custom white balance. I've included the histogram of each image so that you can see it is a correct exposure. I "zeroed" the light meter for correct exposure.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/MANUALNOFLASH-1.jpg
IMAGE TWO
MANUAL MODE, FLASH FIRED IN REAR CURTAIN, CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE.
I made NO changes other than to attach the flash. I did NOT make any adjustments to the light meter. It was still "zeroed" out. ( Ooops, sorry about the larger size.. I'm just too lazy right now to go back and resize the thing.) Again, by the histogram, you can see that it is a correct exposure.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/MANUALFLASH-1.jpg
IMAGE THREE
APERTURE PRIORITY, NO FLASH, CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE. You can see it looks almost exactly like the manual mode no flash image. ( S and P were identical also). The histogram indicates a correct exposure.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/APERTUREPRIORITYNOFLASH.jpg
IMAGE FOUR
APERTURE PRIORITY, FLASH FIRED, CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE . Again, I did nothing but attach the flash and set a custom white balance. No change to ISO or aperture.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/APERTUREPRIORITYFLASH.jpg
And in case you were wondering why all the CWB, the lighting is very mixed..some florescent, some halogen and the flash. I just used a white envelope to set the WB with so it's really not "correct" but for the purposes of this demo it will suffice. I set the camera to AUTO white balance for this shot and you can certainly see the difference in the overall tones.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j237/mamamolar/AUTOWHITEBALANCE.jpg
The flash images have a slightly cooler look to them, BUT the colors are MUCH truer to what I actually saw- particularly in the pinkish/rose background. However, most( myself included) would like the non flash images as they are warmer.
Note the histograms for both of the non-flash images..... virtually the same.
Note the histograms for both of the flash images.. again virtually the same.
Note the histogram for the AUTO WB image.. slanted more to the left which is correct as well. The image is slightly darker due to the darker background color ! The light meter was zero'd out here as well.
So, you see, Chris, zeroing out your meter when in manual and then using the flash will not result in an overexposed image ! THE CAMERA/TTL METERING will "tell" the flash how much light to output to maintain a correct exposure.
AND I used a lens with a variable aperture as I know this is what you have. I wanted to make this as easily reproducible as possible should you want to try it yourself.

Wow!! I understand what you are saying Carolyn, but I totally do NOT get it! How can the flash fire and NOT introduce more light into the scene. That just doesn't make sense to my brain. so what is the purpose of doing a flash? if you are going to get the same results w/ or w/o? Also Say you are in manual and you check for a correct exposure, but in order to get that you end up w/ a 2.8 and 1/30 sec required. Seeing no stable surface or tripod in sight, you grab your handy dandy flash and pop it on there. Now what? How can you increase the shutter speed and how do you know what to increase it to? Sorry if I am being dense. but do you see why this is making NO sense to me?

No Black Friday shopping for me! DH had to work and there is no way I'm driving in the snow (5 inches Wednesday night and more falling this morning) with 3 kids to battle those insane crowds! Not even for the lowest prices ever seen! Especially since I have $0 to spend any way! I need Soy milk for the boys and don't even want to try and go get that! They may have to use water on their cereal tomorrow!
I have, however, been trying to decide how to spend my GC at the Black Friday DSP sale! I've wittled the more than $10 over down to $2.76 over. :) Had to remove Chris's WA from the list!
Off to fix lunch for the hooligans!

Off to fix lunch for the hooligans!
say what?!!!:cry::cry::cry::cry: I thought I was your favorite. ;)

So here's a sweet story.
Josh started having a tummy ache around lunch time, tried to eat, tried to go potty, still felt really lousy so he went and laid down. He called me in a bit later. I was in the middle of eating my lunch so I loved on him, then asked if he would be ok if I went and finished then I would come back and check on him when I was done. He said, "yes, but Mommy will you pray for me?" Isn't that so sweet?! So after I prayed w/ him, he said "Mommy that is awesome, now Heavenly Father can make me all better." And now a few hours later, he is. :D Made me all teary. :)

I'm going to answer these questions in order:
How can the flash fire and NOT introduce more light into the sceneIt does introduce light into the scene. It is obvious it does from the examples I posted..but what you are forgetting is that the flash is ruled by its minimum and maximum sync speeds. The "smart camera/TTL" knows the meter is set to 0 and that the flash is attached and in the ON position. The camera is going to tell the flash to fire, but not to output any more light than needed to keep the meter at 0 . So, our smart little camera will change the shutter speed !
if you are going to get the same results w/ or w/o?
Again, you don't get the SAME results....1) you will have more light introduced into the scene illuminating slightly more of the background. 2) you will lessen or eliminate motion blur from a too slow shutter speed for sharp, hand held images. THE ONLY THING THE "SAME" IS CORRECT EXPOSURE FOR BOTH THE FLASH AND NON FLASH IMAGES.
Say you are in manual and you check for a correct exposure, but in order to get that you end up w/ a 2.8 and 1/30 sec required.
Here is where the flaw in your logic lays! You are thinking of using aperture to "balance" out metering issues rather than it's PRIMARY purpose of controlling desired DOF. Realistically speaking, there are very few times when you would shoot wide open and especially NOT with people ! At f/2.8 the DOF is so shallow that the nose would be in focus and the eyes would not! Not exactly what you want to accomplish.
Instead, use that aperture to achieve how you want the bk to look. Once that is set, now you would change your shutter speed OR ISO to achieve a zero meter reading. If the ISO would be too high and potentially introduce noise to your image, then you pop on the flash. Your smart little camera will tell the flash to output enough light for a correct exposure WITH YOUR CHOSEN APERTURE AND ISO... and it will change the SHUTTER SPEED to accomadate for the light output ! So YOU don't need to change ANYTHING.. the CAMERA/TTL METERING/FLASH will do it automatically.
All digital cameras have a minimun and maximum flash sync speed. ( Mine is 1/60 sec - 1/250 sec)... which means the slowest shutter speed the flash will work well at is 1/60 sec and the fastest will be 1/250 sec. This DOES NOT MEAN you cannot still use the flash below or above the sync speeds, but it will not be as EFFECTIVE in creating a typically correct exposure.
Did you see that layout I did for Sunday Scrappers with the girl singing? That shot was flash but well below the minumun sync speed and you can see that it ONLY threw enough light to illuminate her and nothing in the bk... which was EXACTLY what I wanted as the bk was exceptionally cluttered. Using a simple flash gave me the "spotlight" effect I was going for.
I hope this helps somewhat. As much as I hate to say this, there are times when NOT trusting in technology is a brain rattler..it's good to understand the technology and how it works in theory.. but so long as you can USE it in practice without feeling the need to think your way through every step that can be done automatically FOR you.

NO BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING FOR ME EITHER.. There is NOTHING I want that is worth the effort of fighting those nasty, mean spirited crowds or the road rage. I prefer to shop without duress and live to tell the tale. LOL !
The kids will not die from lack of soy milk, but better to be safely tucked at home rather than skidding around the streets ! YOU TOO !
I asked Tim if there was anything special he wanted for Christmas.. his reply..."Yeah, a deposit on a new car" YIKKES !!! After picking my jaw off the floor I got the joke. Man, that kid likes to torture me. As it is, I actually bought him a set of pans which can go inside the oven as well as on top of the stove. Scratch resistant, heavy metal, dishwasher safe... wish I had me a set of $300.00 pots and pans. ( they are so heavy they could double as either work out weights or weapons LOL)

DS#1 said the sweetest thing at dinner yesterday. We were celebrating with BIL, SIL, and DH's cousin, her husband and her 4 yr old son (no shortcuts for CIL that you would recognize right?). Any way the cousin started the traditional "what I am thankful for speech" and we went around the table. When it got to DS#1 he said, "I'm grateful for all these people who love me!" I nearly cried.

oh yay!!!!!!!! see! Greetings from Dallas, Gundi girls. I haven't had time to catch up on the thread yet, and actually need to be getting ready right now, but wanted to check my emails. etc, so here I am.
We are having a good time. We got here yesterday around 5pm. The hotel is really awesome and decorated so gorgeously for Christmas. The Grinch ice show was cool. I am hoping I have gotten a couple of decent photos of all the decorations, but there are sooooooooooo many people here, that there is no way you can set up your tripod, and in the ice show they told us to keep our cameras inside our jackets since it was 9 degrees in there. They gave us all huge parkas to wear. Every time I tried to take a photo, the camera tried to fog up, so we'll see if I got anything.
Last night Gary and I went to dinner and Drew was supposed to get picked up by a friend of his who is from here to go to a car show, but he got stood up. I felt sorry for him. So this morning Gary and I are taking him to the car show before the Tech game. Not really my thing, but it will be fun to see Drew in the element that he loves.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. We did. I ate too much. We enjoyed time with all the kids and listening to my MIL talk about her date with Mac Davis (don't know if you guys know who he is or not, but is from Lubbock) and also her stories of Buddy Holly playing music in her classroom at school several times before he became famous. LOL
Talk to you all soon!

Oh, I bought a pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving. When I did the math, I could buy it from Costco cheaper than I could make it! Looks like I'm going to be eating the majority of it too as DH has said he's not overly fond, the kids decided they didn't like it and the family only took about half with them. I have it in the freezer which should keep me out of it for the most part, so it should last a while! But if you think your butte is exploding, imagine what mine will do.
Rene - sounds like you are having fun! And I can relate to the camera fogging business. Nice of them to have parkas on hand for every body too! Look forward to seeing the pics!
