Forgive me for hijacking your thread for a minute, Chris, but I wanted everyone to know about this challenge. I won it last time and Jenni just made me the most beautiful redo of one of my layouts!
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36983
And here is the page she did for me-- isn't it beautiful????
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=307505&ppuser=32857
eh hem. . . I'm sure no one will notice that I didn't try to spread the word about this challenge until *after* I won it????

Wow, you guys really have been chatty the last couple of days! It took me 15 minutes to catch up on all the posts I had missed!
Chris, I love the Lotus Blossom Kit. I think it will be great for a heritage layout, with the right photo. I've got to get busy on my All For Alethea layout. I have the photo chosen. That's my goal for Sunday when DH is playing golf.
Lisa, if I was closer, I would come help you pack. I'm a good packer/mover. I'm very organized. No fun being a single mom for 2 1/2 months. It's hard. I did it for years before DH and I married in 2004.

I'm such a good girl. . . at least as far as the mammos go. The paps now. . . lol
But then, I work at the clinic and one snow day last December when none of the scheduled patients could make it in, the techs came around and reminded all the idle employees hehe. That is definitely the way to do it: no time to worry about it ahead of time and think up excused not to do it!
Just remember if you tend to have sensitive breasts to try to avoid caffeine for a week or so before, and maybe take a couple tylenol or ibuprofen before you go!

I didn't know that about the caffeine. Maybe the sensitive thing is why I don't mind them that much and other people say they hurt really bad.

Ok guys. It's 1:46 in the morning here in Texas and I'm not anywhere near ready to go to bed. I need to vent about something that is bothering me.
The sister that I saw last weekend in Brownwood came to Lubbock today to visit. She is raising her granddaughter and wanted to bring her here to do some shopping since it is Spring Break. So my sister, her husband, and my great niece came in tonight. We had dinner, then spent some time talking.
Here's a bit of background for those of you who don't know. My dad passed away from cancer and Alzheimers 3 years ago (St. Patrick's Day actually). My sister is about 65 years old. My dad moved to Lubbock 6 months after my mom passed away because of his cancer and Alzheimers diagnosis so that I could take care of him. I spent the last 6 months of my dad's life taking care of him and being with him every day for many hours, even after I had to put him in a nursing home. Last weekend also, but especially today, I saw some of the same Alzheimer's behaviors in my sister that I saw in my dad those last 6 months. Alzheimers patients will get very confused and disoriented when they are put in an unfamiliar environment. When my dad moved into my house, he would just wander around looking at stuff like he'd never seen it before. My sister did the same thing tonight. At one point, she was supposed to be getting some stuff out of their pickup to bring into my house. My husband and I found her leaning into the pickup just doing nothing - not getting anything or rearranging anything - just nothing. After she had been here awhile, and felt more comfortable, I think, she started to make more sense and be less disoriented and confused. I seriously think she already has Alzheimers. I don't know if I should say something or not. She has a daughter in Brownwood where she lives, but she is 35 years old, very immature and irresponsible, and my sister is still paying her bills. Her son is very responsible (the nephew from Canada I saw last weekend) and very caring, but he lives in western Canada, too far away to help much at this point, although he knows he will eventually be the one who has to take care of his parents. She gets very defensive, hurt and angry when her granddaughter makes fun of her for her memory loss (you know how teenagers are), so I'm afraid to say anything, but also afraid not to because I know there are medications that can slow down the progress of Alzheimer's.
Sorry this is such a long post, but I needed to get this off my chest. Thanks guys for listening.
Maybe I should have broken this post up into several smaller ones so I could waffle some more to get my post count up!:rofl:

I would say TALK TO HER!
You are absolutely right, there are meds that can slow the progression. I am sure you can say it in a non threatening, not making a diagnosis, just "hey let's get this looked at" kind of way. At least, put it out there and if she totally shuts you down, the seed has still planted. Gosh you have life flinging stuff at you right now. So did your ds ever call? Is he living in his car?

Rene, my heart goes out to you. This must be so hard for you. I think you have to tell someone, either her or her husband. At least let them know things that you have noticed and signs they should be looking for. Maybe you could talk to your nephew and see if he has noticed anything. Surely they will understand your concern. I hope you were able to get some sleep last night.

Yeah, that would definitely be the way to do it... not thinking about it ahead of time. I never heard about the caffeine thing before. Could be a issue for me :)
And now that we've all complained... Chris it's really not so bad. Goes pretty quickly and certainly worth the effort.

Lisa, I hope your kids get better soon. I HATE fevers, they are the worst. Once my dh husband was in Sweden and my dd had a fever of 104. Took her to the dr. and he said, it's a virus, keep meds in her and watch her. It lasted for 5 days (not 104 the whole time, but way high). It was so hard by myself.

Well, the first one they did on me wasn't to bad! It was the redo because they said they saw something. They were sure it was just the angle of the picture (which it was), but to get that one she really had to twist things. It still didn't hurt all that bad. Maybe being decaffeinated already helped. But in the long run, the peace of mind is worth every second (and it really is just seconds)!

Rene - I'm sooooo sorry you are now going through this along with everything from your DS! My advice is to talk, but not to just her. Sit down with both her and her husband. Tell them about your Dad, what he did, how he acted. And then say: "Seeing you just staring into the truck brought back so many memories! Since Alzheimers may run in families, maybe you should just consider seeing a Dr!" I think you should at least talk to your nephew and prepare him too! He may not be able to do anything right away, but he has the right to know what is coming.

Thanks everyone for your advice and concern. It does feel like there is so much going on right now. I do think I will talk to my nephew about it. The more I think about it, the more I think maybe it needs to come from him. She respects him and his opinion so much, I think she might be more open to the suggestion of it if it came from him. So I will call him after they leave tomorrow.
I didn't go to bed until 5:00 this morning. Too much on my mind, but on the bright side, I did get a layout done of my girls that I am very proud of. I finally did a reflection layout that I had been wanting to do with the All For Alethea kit and a couple others. I got up at 8:00, so I'm a bit tired. I'm taking my sister and her DH to see the Veteran's War Memorial where I bought Daddy a memorial brick, and then to a couple of stores, so that will get my mind off things for a bit.
I've only had a couple of "Hi, how are you" texts from DS. They haven't evicted him yet, although I know that will be coming in the next couple of weeks. Just waiting for that to happen.

Oh, Rene! How much you are wrestling with right now!
Your sister definitely needs to get to the doctor. If it is alzheimers, the sooner she gets on those meds the better. But it could be so many other things, from medication side effects (I'd say sorry, Chris, but I bet Chris would be the one nodding her head hardest!) to sleep apnea to depression to thyroid problems to ministrokes! However you need to do it, get her there.
How awful and scary for you!

DH says he hasn't heard from DS either and definitely hasn't given him any money. Now I'm beginning to wonder if he's in some kind of trouble and that's why he's avoiding me. I hate to think the worst, but I know how he operates. Or maybe he's in denial, waiting until the last possible moment to call me before he gets evicted.
One bad thing about that, is that the first weekend in April, we are all 5 supposed to have a family portrait made and I know if he's homeless and mad at me for not paying his bills he won't have the portrait made, so I'll just have to cancel the appointment. It is supposed to be a Mother's Day gift for my mother-in-law. So I've been thinking of other ideas for Mother's Day.

I talked to DS today. He's gotten a reprieve. He is getting enough money on his IRS return this year that will pay his bills for another month. He had a second interview with a carpet cleaning company today. He has a friend that works there and he said he pretty much was told he was getting a job. He should find out for sure on Friday or Saturday. I am praying that will work out. He wanted to have lunch on Friday and I told him I would love to have lunch with him, but not if his plan is to ask me for money. He said he didn't intend to ask me for money. DS was back home by 10am, out of a job. He was a project manager for a plumbing firm and his primary builder is starting no new projects; therefore, his job was the one eliminated.
So we could use a few prayers that he is able to find a job in a relative short period of time.
CaroD, sounds like you had some kind of problem? Hope all is resolved and better for you by now.

ok I have a connection at least for the moment. The reason my internet went down was cuz of the guys painting. Gosh I will be soooooo glad when we are done! Do you all feel like this has taken FOREVER!!!!

Hi guys. I love your flair too wardlw! Very cute.
Update:
I talked to DS today. He's gotten a reprieve. He is getting enough money on his IRS return this year that will pay his bills for another month. He had a second interview with a carpet cleaning company today. He has a friend that works there and he said he pretty much was told he was getting a job. He should find out for sure on Friday or Saturday. I am praying that will work out. He wanted to have lunch on Friday and I told him I would love to have lunch with him, but not if his plan is to ask me for money. He said he didn't intend to ask me for money. So please send prayers this way that he will get this carpet job.

I get them from either the local scrapbook store (which is where I ordered the new ones from) or from Hobby Lobby. The brand is We Are Memory Keepers. Hobby Lobby doesn't always have a real good selection of colors or fabrics. They come in other sizes besides 12x12 too. They are 3 ring binders instead of the kind with the posts, and I just buy extra sleeves to add to the album.
Here is a website I found that has them.

Brag Alert!
We had parent/teacher conferences for the boys this morning! I'm so proud of my guys! DD#1 reads at a whopping 69 words per minute and DD#2 reads at 58 words per minute. They can both count by 10's to 110, and add by 10's (ie: 12+10, etc). They do double digit addition and subtraction. Remember, they are in Kindergarten and are only 5 years old!

OH MY HECK! You would not believe all I went through so I could get back to playing with you all. Rob (dh's cousin that has been helping me paint) didn't show up to paint today and I know he won't be back until at least Monday. This is with all of the stuff from our BIG room downstairs (rec room kind of thing) SHOVED to the center and the modem/router ALL UNPLUGGED! My puter is in my cave but doesn't do me much good if the modem/router are not plugged in and I don't have a cable jack in the cave. Grrrrrr!!!!!! So dh and I were a bit fed up and he had the day off so we painted, and painted and painted some more. I had to free hand all of the ceilings and my back and neck are KILLING me, from leaning and stretching up for 10+ hours. Unfortunately, we found out that when the guy that finished the basement painted, he must have used the lowest setting for paint on the sprayer AND only did one coat! We had to do ALL of the walls and the edges THREE times, to get it to look good. We used 5 gallons of paint in the process. It was just sucking the paint in like you wouldn't even believe, plus the fact that it really is HUGE! The trim still needs to be done, but we at least did it behind where dh's computer goes, so we could get his computer set back up. Once it was all dry, I started hooking things back up and would you believe it?! The connector to the coaxial cable for the cable jack, broke off! Luckily I had a spare, but had to get that back hooked up, before we could hook up everything else! Anybody feeling sorry for me yet?! or just thinking, ok Chris, enough whining! :D At any rate, I am exhausted but had to check in before going to bed.

Can't say I know anything about this March madness stuff!!
It's college basketball tournament. 64 basketball teams are selected by a panel to participate. It's a single elimination tournament. So, there are fewer teams as they win. When it gets to sixteen teams, they call it the "Sweet 16." Then it goes to 8, then the "Final Four", until 1 team wins the championship. It all takes place in March, hence the name "March Madness."
I am just teasing Chris because my team beat her team in an upset in the first round. Luckily, I know Chris is good-natured enough to handle a little teasing. :D

OH MY GOSH, I'm going to cry.:cry::cry: My EHD is not responding. I have ALL of my layouts on it and my kits. I put all of the kits I have on my lappie a couple months ago, but haven't trasnfered anything recently. I am dying!!! When I plug it into the computer, the computer starts being so slow and not working very well. What am I going to do? Chris's EHD issue from a while back isn't giving me much hope.:eek:
yeah sorry to say I never did get my LOs back :cry::cry::cry: so my heart is with you

Heather! I sure hope it is just your connection. Try a new cable if you have one (hey, it worked for DH in getting our totally ancient scanner to work on the lappie this morning!)
OK, big prayer request! We just found a job for me to apply for! In Anchorage! I haven't seen anything decent here since I got laid off when the boys were born!

does your computer recognize the EHD??? Meaning you can see the drive name when you look under MY COMPUTER??? If so, it may still be accessible... contact the tech support for the EHD and they can walk you through how to access it....It could be as simple as one of the drivers being corrupted somehow.. so you would only need to reinstall the driver.
It makes a huge difference if the computer recognizes the drive !!!!
When you mention your computer starts running slowly makes me think there might be a space /memory/ram issue..
I'm no tech pro, but I find that cleaning everything out etc can make a difference .
Just a thought, just a thought...
I am soooooooooooo feeling you pain as I had this happen to me last year!

Lisa I so hope you can get a job if that's what you need to do!!!
Ok, my lappie does not recognize the EHD at all. I did get it to see it on my desk top finally after much plugging and unplugging. So I started copying everything to my desktop. Then I got an error, that I got earlier, and it quit copying. It copied 1/2 of my lo's before it stopped. I unplugged it again and left and then came back and plugged it back in and tried to open it, but it wouldn't. Then I saw that you can see the files on the left of the screen so I just pulled them from it and copied the rest of what I need to the desktop again. So I have what I need, but something is wrong with it, so I will give it to my bil and have him look at it. Thanks heavens i have what I need and I have learned that I am going to back up A LOT more often.
Crys, yes it is WD and the entire time I was thinking of you telling me in SLC how much trouble you have had with it, so I'm getting another brand.

Okay ~ I have a technical question. It may be obvious, so please bear with me. Right now, I have all my stuff on my computer hard drive & just use EHD as back up. But my hard drive is getting to full, so I want to move all my digi stuff over to an EHD and use it from there. Then, do I need to get a 2nd EHD to back up everything? I do put all photos & scrap pages on disks. Does anyone use online back up? What do you all do??? Thanks!
(I'm gonna post this in the granny thread too so I can get lots of good advice from all of you :) )

Yup yup! Two copies of anything you dont want to loose! I have all my photos on my hard drive, and uploaded to 2 seperate photo sights (kodak and shutterfly), and most of them are backed up to an ehd (hmmmmmm. . . . can you say paranoia? lol) although I haven't gotten that worked up about my scrapbooking supplies. . . yet ;-)
I do have to say. . . I am NOT a seagate fan. I know, I know, lots of people use them and are perfectly happy, and honestly between dh and I we have several seagate drives that have never given us a lick of trouble. BUT, I recently bought a seagate drive for my scrapbooking stuff, and out of the box it didn't work. Customer service was HORRIBLE, and after a couple of sessions with them when the "go buy this cord" solution didn't work, they decided the problem was I had a defective drive, and their solution was that I should send it back to them. . . at my expense. It was a gift, so taking it back to the store wasn't an option. ANY company, no matter how good their product, can have a bad device. What they do from there really counts with me.

NO - we still don't know if he has the job (or should I say, if he's going to take the job) as we still don't know what the pay is! But almost all the jobs he is finding and applying for are in Anchorage so I guess you could call it inevitable! And if I happen to get a job first, well we will just have to go from there. This particular job is a really good fit. I wasn't really looking, but it kind of fell in our laps. We are laughing over the thought that it could be me up there and him getting the move accomplished down here! We'll see! With me working and him on unemployment - well, every penny counts, right?
I will try to get the time to look/comment on the LO's but really need to go finish my resume now!
Hugs and prayers!

Jenni, I use Carbonite for backup. It costs $50 a year, but to me it's worth it because we use it to back up our business too. It's an unlimited online backup service. You choose what files or directories you want it to back up and it automatically backs up everything in those files/directories when you make any changes to them. It works great. I have all my kits, layouts, photos, email, documents, etc on there.

Actually, he is a much better mover than I am! So in many ways I think it would work out even better. What I do see as a problem is not seeing the kids for 2 months. That and not having my PS! I would have to live with the laptop and leave the Mac here! (Oh my heck - just thought of what I will have to clean from my hard drive after DH has had access for 2 months! - Yikes!)

Now I have another question. Where do you keep all your kits, layouts, etc.??? On your hard drive or do you put them on an EHD?
I can leave them on my C drive but it's getting kind of crowded. I'd rather put them on an EHD. I guess the on-line program could just back up from there. Do you have a program to sync files from your hard drive to your EHD?
Okay - these questions are open to everyone :D Thanks!
idtwinmom
03-25-2009, 05:48 PM
I'm not sure about Carbonite, but not all online storage facilities can do backups from EHDs. Check carefully to make sure! I personally only use the EHD for backup. Maybe once I can get a second one I might use one for storage, but won't need it for a long time as I have a 500 GB hard drive in my computer. And maybe someday I will do online storage too.
One other thing to remember, if you take something off your computer, it is gone from you backup as well. Make very careful choices about what to remove and make sure you have some other form of backup just in case. CDs/DVDs are one source for those files you don't really need to have daily access to, but make sure you have more than one copy if it is something you might need.

Great info on the online back up etc. I wonder if I ought to look into that.
OK another topic. I have a question for you guys. Have any of you had an endometrial oblation? My stupid ferretin level is still only 13, so we are discussing it. For anyone who wasn't hanging in the GT, the last time I had this checked, it is indicative of low iron/anemia, etc. and yes I am totally horrible about compliance with my iron therapy. I do really well for a while and then I just totally forget! So any time you want to tell me to go take my iron, go for it, it will help me remember. At any rate, PM me if you have experience with this. I have read some on it, but wanted to hear if anyone had a personal experience. The thing is I really don't have much in the way of symptoms from the anemia, except I do get a heart murmur occasionally if it gets too low, but even that is asymptomatic. You can see why I have a hard time remembering. :D

DH told me Carbonite can not at this time back up from an EHD. Right now I have all my stuff on my C drive, but am thinking about transferring some of my stuff to an EHD, but then of course it wouldn't be backed up. I need to check and see how much room I have left on my C drive, but it's not full yet. I was thinking about moving used ploppers, layouts I've already printed out, photos I've already scrapped, and kits I don't forsee using too often to an EHD to free up some space on my C drive. You know some kits you use parts of more often than others. No, I don't have a program to sync files from my hard drive to my EHD.

No, Chris, no experience with endometrial oblation. I had problems with anemia when I was younger, but that was years ago. The only symptom I really noticed from that was constant exhaustion. Iron took care of the problem though. You just have to be religious in taking it. I'm bad like that about my calcium, which I am supposed to take daily due to having had a hysterectomy at a young age. Maybe you can remind me to take my calcium, and I can remind you to take your iron.:lol:

JL, in case no one has answered this directly, Carbonite does NOT back up from an EHD; only your hard drive. We learned this in the GT some time back, when we were going through the same discussions. That's why several of the ladies went in the other directions mentioned. (Sorry my feeble brain is NOT remember the other two backup services being used.)

I have a habit too. I take my other meds every night, but for some reason, I HATE HATE HATE the calcium. I've tried different versions of it - pills, chewables, and now slightly vanilla flavored pills to swallow, but I still hate it, so I'm not good at taking it.

I know! It's supposed to be up to 76 degrees here today, then a storm system is supposed to hit tonight and bring rain mixed with snow! I really can't complain much though because we only had one snow this winter when all over the country was hit hard with it. I have several trees that are fairly new-they were just planted last fall, so I don't want to lose them in a late freeze. We lost 2 about this time last year for the same reason.

I have a habit too. I take my other meds every night, but for some reason, I HATE HATE HATE the calcium. I've tried different versions of it - pills, chewables, and now slightly vanilla flavored pills to swallow, but I still hate it, so I'm not good at taking it.
Have you tried the chocolate chewy ones? I can't think of the name right now, but they are not too bad. You could stick them by your puter and have one a day while you visit with us :D

BRAG ALERT!
I am so excited guys! I won the weekly Heritage challenge with my "Daddy In The Oilfield" layout! It's voted on by all the ladies at the weekly Heritage chat! It's my first time to win! The bad part is that I missed the chat last night because I was spending some time with DH. I was so proud of that layout because it's who my Daddy was all my life and I was proud of my blending on it. I tried a different blend mode than what I had done before. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

*sigh* I just called for a refill on my migraine meds, and realized I missed 10 doses in 3 months. Yikes! I'm a nightmare patient! And that's even with the 3 year old reminding me lol
LOL You know what they say about who is the worst patient ;)

Congrats, Rene!! It's an awesome page.
Everybody... go take some pills! I take vitamins, the kind in the paks, so there are 5 pills. I'm pretty good at remembering when I feel bad but when I'm feeling good i forget about them. I'm one of "those people" who are really bad about making good habits stick. Now the bad habits....

I tried the Viactive for awhile, and at first they were great, but then I got so tired of them every day. The vanilla flavored swallowable ones have worked the best for me, I just have to make myself take them. If I put my meds in one of those 14 day pill organizers, I'm much better about taking everything. DH makes fun of me and calls me old since my parents used them (in fact the organizers themselves actually belonged to my parents). :)

OK, looks like it is confession time! I have to take 1/2 of this teeny tiny zero flavored pill for my thyroid every day. Each morning, dear sweet DH lays out my pill and fills a juice glass with water for me. Last week while he was sick I got up first and kept the kids quiet so he could sleep. Guess what - I forgot my pill! I've been taking the darn thing for 2 years and know that it will be sitting there waiting for me (he always gets up and showers and then gets me up). But darned if I didn't forget it when I had to be the one to pull it out of the bottle! Good thing I stop taking it in April to see if it finally worked!

That reminds me of how my dh fills my car up with gas, cuz he knows I don't particularly like to. I can go for MONTHS without doing it. If he is going out of town, he always makes sure it is all filled up before he goes. everybody say AHHHHHHH. :D

it's nice to hear about your sweet hubbies. Mine will usually do anything I tell him to do... oops, I mean ASK him to do. He used to always put gas in my car and usually still does, but he won't fill it up anymore. He keeps waiting for gas prices to go down, so he doesn't want to fill it up with the expensive gas just before the price drops.
And really? there is no self serve gas in Oregon?

Thank you, everyone, for your awesome birthday wishes! I had a wonderful one!!!
As yesterday was a regular old work day (:(), I wasn't home for most of it. When I got home, DH took me out to dinner at a local Chinese Buffet. YUM When I got home, I was so fat and miserable, I just sat/laid on the couch and watched TV with him. Which was rather nice, because one, I'm usually at the computer whilst he's on the couch. Same room, but different ends and his back is always to me. And two, he gives the best foot rubs and he gave me that treat for the LONGEST time! :yahoo: :yahoo:
So......this morning I told him I was going to pretend today was my Birthday and I'm doing nothing but scrapping all day!
Of course, first I had to catch up with all my *peeps*! But, now I'm almost ready to begin my scrapping day!

Happy Sunday all! It has been a rainy week here for the most part. And today is the last day of Spring Break! (Yeah! - the kids go back to school!) Nothing worse than 3 active kids held captive in the house by cold rain!
Crys - hope your scrappin day was as good as that foot rub sounded! The only time DH has been good at that was when I was pregnant. I would seriously have to beg and plead for him to do something like that now. Although, I don't complain, he does a lot of other stuff!

Yes, my scrapping day was a success; I actually got 4 layouts done, which is a VERY good day for me.
Now today...with DH sponsoring a Fish Fry and me having to do so much of his grunt work, I've only gotten one done in 6 hours. But, it combined two challenges, so I guess I should not complain!
