View Full Version : Chatting with Gundi
I go back to school on Monday. We just got into summer routines and now it's time to start again. New day home for the boys and Sebastian starting pre-K will hopefully not throw too many wrenches our way.
Today was my grandma's birthday party and it was just perfect!! The book I made for her was a huge hit! I couldn't tell you how many times it was opened and browsed!
I am so glad that they loved your book, Addie!!! Hooray! :yippee: You do such nice work.
PQ...according to my calculations, you can wait until 2014 to get a dog, but you will need to get additional dogs in 2016 and 2017.
You could start collecting cats to balance out the dogs
You cannot have more than three pets by law here.........so I think we had better stop adopting! LOL!
Wow - 15 months? Families in the armed forces deserve tons of respect. Everyone sacrifices when mom or dad is serving overseas.
I teach in Pacifica - - near San Francisco. I'm a Southern California resident no more (of course, NOW is when Margie decides to make another SoCal visit! HUMPH!). There are things I miss, but overall it is happy-happy-joy-joy to be in NorCal again!
I have a few friends and a daughter in Northern California. Daughter #3 is in San Francisco. Neither she nor her husband drive. The world became a safer place when that daughter gave up driving.
Ditto abut the armed forces families. They have my respect and my prayers.
Maggie - what grade are you teaching this year? Are you spending this weekend working on school stuff?
I just started a new job in Northern California. I'm teaching the same subjects as before (6th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies, 7th grade Drama), but things are done SO differently at my new school. I like it though!
So far I've got a 3 column list of things I need to accomplish in the next few days. Which is why I'm here - - goofing off instead of working! :)
I remember the art and drama teachers my kids had.........OMGosh, there was not a more loved teacher on the planet. When Ryan was in 6th grade art he made a sculpture of a toilet with wings....never did understand that one.
Gary hasn't ever gone on a golfing trip, but it takes him pretty much all day one day each week when he plays. We live about 30 minutes from the golf course, he goes to hit balls for an hour for practice before actually starting the game. 18 holes takes about 4 hours IF the people in front of them are not going slow, then that could add another hour, after hole 9 they go into the clubhouse and order lunch so that's about 30 minutes, then after the game they have to pack up their stuff, turn in the golf carts, then they have to stand around for an hour talking to each other about hitting balls all day. So total it's about 7-8 hours. He might as well be at work all day. But I am glad he has that "guy time".
Doug has no guy time at all......if he needs guy time I just put on a hat and a pair of britches and pretend.:D
oh back to that scooter thing, my dad had one when he banged up his ankle really bad and had to be non-weight bearing. Thus far I haven't taken the time etc to find out where to rent one, I just keep hopping along. The PA said as non-wt bearing as you can be. LOL He really didn't know who he was talking to, did he?!
Get the scooter girl! Those crutches are brutal!
Its not even due until Tuesday, so hopefully everyone can still get it in.... It is not looking like I will be around much at the end of the week, to extend it. I will have to contemplate what my schedule is looking like after the kids have their first official day of school, but not looking likely as of right now. :(
At present I am having a little trouble sitting long enough to scrap.....but I plan on things being better tomorrow. :love1:

Boy, away just a couple days and look at all the chit chat! As for Armed Forces families - I think we should all bow down to them once a week and show them just how much we care. Not only to the protect us from all the crazies out there, they do it while separated from the ones they love. I can't even imagine dealing with these 3 without DH for 15 months, and then to do it while worried that he might never come home would really send me over the edge.
PQ - that toe was hideous. You should have had a disclaimer about weak stomachs on that link.
I don't know what is wrong with me. Every other day I have an ear ache that just about drives me to distraction. But it goes and comes so I can't believe I've really got anything wrong. It seems tied to the weather which has been rainy, sunny, rainy, sunny (in other words - typical Alaska August). It's super nice right now. I can actually see sun through the trees. Kids are asking for a picnic lunch again.
Addie - That's awesome about the book. It is always great when hard work is appreciated!
I'm not actually in San Francisco. Like Addie, I could never deal with the driving and parking. So many people told me to find an apartment in the city because it is so cool, but 1. it is far too expensive and 2. I prefer having some space! I live in a nearby city and the streets are crowded and too small here already (but manageable!).
Pacifica is a beach town. I can see the ocean from my school (not from my room though!). The school district is small (8 schools) and awesome. My room has so many windows and natural light. The school is relatively new and in great shape. Everyone is nice. It is the best!!!! It is foggy a majority of the time so I guess that is depressing to some people, but I'm loving the change from SoCal. Plus, I live in a city that gets plenty of sun. And when Pacifica is not foggy - - wow!!! I have the most gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean when driving to work. :)
So why does PQ have to wait so long to get a dog? I sense a story...
Anyway, if we do an Adobe crop in SF again, I'm in just the right place!!!

Tara - my younger sister lived in San Fran, but driving was not an issue. She just used the buses and trollies. She has always hated driving (not sure what she does now as she lives in up-state New York). She did rent a car when I visited one time, and I never saw a worse driver. Her method of parking was to "tap" the car in front or behind her so she knew she was in the space. But it sure sounds like you are in a beautiful place.

Yep, I agree about armed forces families. You guys are amazing!! That is the one thing I have really learned to appreciate here in SD. I have learned so much and am so glad that so many people sacrifice for our country!
Amen!!!!

I'm ready! I wish I was going to Vegas for the crop, but just didn't think I was going to be ready to be away from Jace at that time. Now it turns out that Gary has planned an RV trip to Colorado to talk to a man about putting a road on our land and pad for the RV. So I guess I will be gone anyway, unless Amy starts her job by that time, then I'll stay home with Jace.

Out of town again the next 2 days. Driving cars with CK Mon; shopping with friend Tues.
I thought that I should share my most recent Zooey story with ya'll....
Doug always puts the dogs to bed at night. Three of the dogs sleep in a huge kennel in the garage (standard poodle, toy fox terrier, doxie), and three of the dogs sleep in the living room in an end table that is actually a disguised kennel (toy poodle, yorkie, pom). Last night Doug put the first three dogs in the garage, then he gathered up the three little dogs and put them in the living room kennel. But before Doug could get the kennel door closed, Zooey (the pomeranian who makes me laugh out loud everyday) escaped.:lol:
Zooey bolted. ZIP! That dog can run like a bullet, she is very agile, and she has every defensive maneuver down pat.
When Zooey got to the top of the stairs, she stopped and looked back at Doug. Doug said, "Zooey! Come here right now!" Zooey scoffed.
:lol:Doug stood there ranting and Zooey stood there laughing.
Finally Doug decides that he is going to have to walk over there and pick Zooey up because she obviously is not going to voluntarily come back. Zooey stood perfectly still until Doug got about two inches away, then she bolted again.
Off Zooey went to the next set of stairs; she skipped down them and patiently waited by the front door for Doug to arrive. I guess Zooey is a wee bit faster than Doug. Again Zooey waited until Doug was only an inch or two away, and off she went again.
This went on and on, with Doug screaming Zooey's name the entire time and every time Zooey got to a set a of stairs, she stood there and patiently waited for Doug to catch up.
Eight laps later, Zooey was back in the kennel.:lol::rofl:

and I hear ya Crys, I am being dutiful about wearing my boot so I should get some brownie points for that. I just keep hobbling along cuz I don't have pads for my crutches, who knows what the kids did w/ them (have had them forever from a previous injury and imagine that the kids thought they should be played with) and besides I hate using them.

I know you're right, it's just that he changes so much every day it seems and I don't want to miss anything!
Drew & Amy told me tonight while I was making dinner that they are about to get their wills done and that Gary & I will be Jace's guardians if anything happens to both of them. Then they said Amy's dad has offered to buy them a house if they will move to Springtown (near Fort Worth). I was suddenly no longer hungry. I don't think they will do it, but I know they are considering it. :(

As for San Francisco, it's a blast to visit... but I can't imagine living there because I don't think I can maneuver the STREETS there! ahahaha..... it scares me to drive there. I think I once saw in the bookstore a book that was titled something like "how to drive in San Francisco... " ahahaha.... wow, they aren't kidding, it does take a book! ahahaha!

Good morning GG's...
I hope everyone is feeling better .. long list of injuries above.. hugs to all..
I have a ton of scrapping to do.. don't know when I'll get to it.. some day ..
I think I've finally reached the point where I can sleep thru the nite (or most of it) with my husband's new CPAP machine.. those first 3 weeks were horrible ... (was he breathing was he not breathing.. oh, he moved the mask off - I need to wake him to get it back on.. etc. etc.. )... we are on his 4 mask. I think this one fits his face the best. and is easier to put on (both at first and in the dark... so, we'll see.. I was going with little sleep there for those first 3 weeks.. and, he was waking up so refreshed.. But, I think we are doing pretty good now.
Hope all is well with everyone...
Rene, I'll be praying that Amy and Drew don't chose the option of moving to Fort Worth.. That might give them a home, but not a fantastic baby sitter.. hugs..

PQ - I think you should rent Zooey out as a personal trainer.
Today I actually got to start teaching which thrills me to no end (the last few days were filled with so many get-to-know-you-activities, procedures, school info, etc.). Can't wait to do more and get to know my students better. I hate feeling so clueless!!! We've done some pre-tests so I have an idea of where they are at with certain skills, but I prefer it when I actually know them a bit better and have seen their work for a few weeks.
Anyway...still happy...even though I have to get up early...which says a lot!!!
Made some progress in getting my apartment organized this weekend. It feels good every time I unpack a box (I'm a slow unpacker...when I return from a trip, I can leave my suitcase unpacked for a week and it doesn't bother me one bit!). But I gotta get things straightened up before people start asking to come visit and see what a true slacker I am!
Christine

I don't prefer to get it done...but like you said, if I don't do it right away (which I almost never do) it will be ages! There is no middle for me either!

Turns out he'll be going by himself. Amy had 3 job interviews today and got offered a job and she starts Wednesday, so unless we take the little man with us (and I don't see that happening), I will stay here to babysit.
Today was the first time I kept him all day due to school and the interviews. He woke up at 7:30. All day he slept a total of 35 minutes, until he went to sleep at 9:00 this evening. I may have my hands full! But that's ok. :)
So glad you teachers are excited about starting a new year! Emily started college today. She said it went well. She is going to a small community college 20 minutes from here for the first 2 years then will go to Texas Tech. She just wasn't emotionally ready for Tech just yet. By the time Amy graduates, Emily should be ready to go there.
No CPAP here. Gary's never been a snorer thank goodness.

Tara would only be posting DURING class if she was one of the teachers at OUR school district...... ok, not ALL of them do it, but there are MANY who do..and it annoys me to no end!! The other thing that annoys me is that many of our teachers have their students on facebook and they actively post to/with them on facebook and act like they are 15 again. Ugh. Oh I can go on for years about this subject. Anyhoooooooooooo! Overall, we have a handful of teachers who I genuinely like VERY much, they are EXCELLENT teachers and I make sure they know it and that they feel appreciated. I just wish I could feel this way about EVERY teacher in our district. It's a hard job they have and I respect them SOOOOOOOOO MUCH for doing their job well, it's a job I surely could NOT do, and I love that they take the time out of their lives to teach my children. Now if we could just increase the salaries of teachers, I think we could get an entire district full of EXCELLENT teachers here. Dang it, I wish I was in charge of things... hahahahaah!

Lisa, have you seen the DR? I cannot imagine having ear pain on a every-other-day basis.
No, there is absolutely no sense in going to the Dr. again! I've been many times in the past to be told I am having a migraine - yep, they called my ear ache a migraine. And then said it's just the change in barometric pressure. It only lasts during the rainy season and then it quits. It's just that this year has been a bit worse because the rainy season has been so back and forth (not truly deciding to rain or be sunny either one). At any rate, I seem to be better and haven't had any pain in a couple of days, even tho it's raining today too.

So Tara, do you teach anywhere near the district where the superintendent is returning a huge portion of his salary to the district to help with funding? I heard about it on IPMR, and kudos to that guy! Granted, he retired for one day so he is pulling retirement, but still -- quite impressive.

There isn't one? I am surprised. I thought I combined them already. I know I won't be able to for a while cuz I have LOTS on the docket for the next couple of weeks. You could get them individually on the big sale today, that would be cheaper than waiting for the VC :)
That's what I needed to know. I was really hoping to snag the VC on the sale, but if that'll take too long, I'll get them individually now. :love2:

I guess you know now who really loves you best! :D
Dang it, I wish I was in charge of things... hahahahaah!
My cousins (in high school) tell me about teachers they have who are always on FB during class. I just don't get that. I don't have TIME to be on FB during class even if I wanted to be!
I will admit that I am friends with some of my former students on FB, but those are my FORMER students and I have a separate FB account just for them. My rule is that once they no longer go to the school where I teach, we can be friends (but even then I wouldn't want them on my personal account). It is enabling me to stay in touch with the students at my former school and I REALLY appreciate that.
I will second that soapbox! Except for being a job I could not do. I can do, have done, and refuse to do any more because of the stupidity of the system rules. That said... there are so many wonderful teachers out there, why do the handful of bad ones always get the attention.
There are some REALLY dumb systems out there. I'm just realizing now how much stress/pressure I was under at my old district (and they weren't even that bad compared to stories I've heard!) because my new district is so awesome. They are administrators who are balanced, intelligent, thoughtful, supportive of teachers, etc. It is like heaven!!!!
So Tara, do you teach anywhere near the district where the superintendent is returning a huge portion of his salary to the district to help with funding? I heard about it on IPMR, and kudos to that guy! Granted, he retired for one day so he is pulling retirement, but still -- quite impressive.
It was open house this evening. Lots of parents, and kids who have caught the shy bug. Some former students sticking their head in too.
I haven't heard about that. That is pretty cool. My BF and I always discuss schools/funding because he's one of those who says, "Schools get too much of our state budget. We can't give them more!" But then I say, "Well, this is what it is like in the classroom so I don't know where all that money is going..." I don't think throwing more and more money at education will solve the problems, but I do think teachers should be well paid and we shouldn't have to worry about how many copies we make...or buy supplies out of our own money!
I have great LASHES because I have been using Latisse for over a year....OMGosh, my lashes are lovely. By jove.......I think you can see them in one of my most recent layouts....CHECK OUT THESE LASHES....
This reminds me of a ridiculous commercial. Have you heard the one that almost makes it seem like thin lashes are a medical condition? They say something about "inadequate lashes". Um...cuz we need more to worry about in regards to our appearance!!!

I also have a separate facebook account for students, but mine are current students and I only post school announcements with it. I also use it to track down students who have gone AWOL. Once students have graduated and I've seen them outside of school, I'll invite them to my personal account, but I think I only have 3 of them there. I am on facebook during school time, but again, my school account, usually tracking down AWOLs or evidence for my admin.
I had one student brag on fb how he had sabotaged a teachers classroom 4 times. Sure made my other evidence more solid!:rofl: The other kids gave him a really hard time over that and he was asked to leave the school

I remember when that happened Addie. Good sleuthing.
I do not ask my students to connect on FB, however, if they ask (after they are done being my students) I will say yes. Only a few ask, they are mostly busy with their own lives. I did have a girl sitting on my friend thing for an entire year last year.
Doing anything not educationally related on the computer is highly discouraged during the school day. So, I must wait until I get home.
If my students were old enough to be officially allowed on FB, then I would definitely consider using it for class related items (like posting homework and such), but since they are only 6th graders and aren't supposed to have FB accounts...I figured I shouldn't encourage it!
Someone seriously bragged about messing with a classroom on FB? Wow - - that student wasn't thinking! Although, I know that at my former school, it was through FB that we found out about a bunch of students playing "the choking game"...and there was always evidence of bullying there as well.
There are a handful of students who I will let join my personal account once they reach college. But for now, especially with so many family members in college and thus posting...um...college stuff, I figured it is better to keep everything separate.
I don't get those people who are friends with bosses/co-workers and then post about calling in sick but going to Disneyland or skiing or something. THINK PEOPLE! That's why I won't even be friends with my co-workers on FB. Not because I fake being sick...or that I'd post it if I did...but I just figure it is safer to have everything separate.
Maggie - - you guys are having open house already?!

Once they are graduated I don't have a problem with teachers having their former students on their FB accounts. I also don't have a problem with teachers who have a FB specifically just for the students to ask questions, obtain assignment info/clarification, and the like.
However, I think teachers having their current students on their personal FB accounts is wrong on so many levels.
I also think teachers having personal relationships/friendships/whatever with current students outside of school is so wrong.
Currently we have a teacher in our district who many parents would love to see fired, re-educated on the rights and wrongs of relationships with children and students, or simply just forced into early retirement... something other than teaching our children. Personal FB'ing it with the kids, movies, dinner, being involved with the kids teenage drama, etc is only the start to the list of problems we have with this teacher. Sadly, we live in the middle of the high desert, not many people want to come here to teach so we have a huge lack of quality teachers. We kind of have to take who we get I suppose.

Honey hush. I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!!! When Andrew was a senior one of his teachers (This teacher was in her early 40's and dressed VERY inappropriately. A group of irate mothers went to the principal about her because the rumors were rampant that she was having some affairs with a few of the male students) invited him to her house for "extra help" in math. WHAT????? Andrew was a 3.8 GPA student, and at that time he was taking AP calculus - he finished that course with a 4.0. What was she going to "help" him with ----- I don't know, but I have my suspicions.
AND NOW THE PLOT THICKENS - that teacher quit at the end of last year, right when Andrew graduated (she left because of all the rumors) and moved to Texas WHERE SHE IS STILL TEACHING. AND I JUST FOUND OUT THAT SHE IS TEXTING ANDREW AT COLLEGE ON A REGULAR BASIS. I almost came unglued. I notified our principal and I hope that he is going to notify the school in Texas. (I would call them myself if I knew where in the heck she went.)
And yes, this same teach has a FB account so that she rub shoulders with her students. I considered flying to Texas and knocking the crap out of her.
This reminds me of a ridiculous commercial. Have you heard the one that almost makes it seem like thin lashes are a medical condition? They say something about "inadequate lashes". Um...cuz we need more to worry about in regards to our appearance!!!
About seven years ago the bulk of my hair (from head to toe) fell out as a result of illness. The first place that the hair loss was evident was my eyelashes, and from there it spread to my entire body. I wore a wig for almost 2 years, then some hair returned and I was able to give up the wig (and boy was I glad because that stinkin' thing was SO hot), but my lashes remained very sparse and there were gaps where there were no lashes at all. Having normal lashes again makes me feel so much more "well".............optical illusion I know, but it really has done wonders for my self esteem.

OMG - PQ! I would hunt her down and hang her! We have had several teachers in just the last two years brought up on ***-abuse charges. One disappeared and I'm sure the entire community would give anything to find him and string him up. One just recently pled guilty without going to trial (thankfully for the poor girls), and at least 2 were fired and given legal probation. I still can't believe we can have this small a school system and that many cases. I guess they don't check backgrounds around here. I suppose we are supposed to be grateful these guys have been caught.
I think that a good rule of thumb for everyone to follow (not just teachers) is:
*If your behavior can be misconstrued as inappropriate, don't do it.
*If your students want to be your friend on facebook, make certain that they know that if they become your friend, you notify their parents and invite them to be friends.

I could tell your horror stories about Facebook and perverts, but I will suffice it to say that you should most definitely monitor the friend list of any minor in your household and most majors! We have an open Facebook policy at our house. Everyone has their facebook password stored on the computer and everyone is free to "check up" on each other. So, I regularly go through my daughter's friends list and her messages to see what is going on, who she is talking to, and who is talking to her. I ASK HER who people are if I don't know them (some of her goofy friends have strange FB names) and I go through her pictures and make sure they are WWW worthy. She has started unfriending her friends if they start using bad language or post inappropriate photos because she knows we'll be discussing it if she doesn't. I agree that if teachers want to be friends with students, they should be friends with the parents just to keep it all above board. I have a few of my daughter's teachers as friends, and one has students for friends. But mostly, I revel in beating her teachers at "Words with Friends." LOL!
But also be aware that there are other forms of social networking where kids are in danger of meeting the wrong kind of adults, so keep sticking your nose in your kids business!

We live in a small town, so the rumors fly... and while I don't believe all rumors, I do know that much of what is said is truth because we have witnessed her at dinner with a student, etc. I read her FB page and I just cringe when I hear her call them 'loveys' and stuff! I really want to know why these people are not hanging their heads in shame.
Teachers have to be ever vigilent to make certain that they are not lumped with the bad eggs because these perverts muddy the water so much. I hate to admit it, but now that I know first hand that this type of behavior exists far more routinely than I suspected, I am constantly scrutinizing the adult in charge when I drop Bia off for an activity. (She is the only child left at home).
Our church requires that Bia leave her phone at home if she participates in one of their activities-FAT CHANCE OF THAT HAPPENING. I tell her to turn it off and leave it out of sight - but that if anything inappropriate happens, to bolt to the bathroom, take out the phone, and call me.
I would hate to kill someone - but if they mess with my children I am liable to.

THIS IS A FACT OF LIFE. THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO GET TO UNILATERALLY MAKE DECISIONS ARE THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THE BILLS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE ALL OF YOUR OWN DECISIONS, YOU NEED TO PAY YOUR OWN BILLS.
Almost every single one of the conversations where that was said involved children wanting us to let them live some place other than the dorm while in college. Everyone has their own opinion, but my husband and I both want our children to live in dorms while they are in college. The kids thought that we should "give" them what we would have spent on room and board. Hmmmmm.....I don't think so. Why would I pay for you to live in a place that I do not want you to live in?
Bottom line: If you are dead set on not living in the dorm, take out a student loan. When you pay your own way you get to make all of your own decisions.

PQ, I do the same with my kids. Scouts doesn't allow the to have their phones either... uh yah right, its in his pocket and turned off. Plain and simply put, if they don't like it ... too bad. If he's abusing MY rule, then I'll pull him out of Scouts, otherwise, I don't see a problem with it being in his pocket.
I have nearly gone to jail over the protection of my child, and I'll continue to do so until my time is up and I'm looking down from above. It is MY job to protect my children, and I'll do exactly that, at all costs.

Like minds......if have been saying this for several decades now....

I can't say anything about this, I just put my daughter into her own apartment right next to the college, which we pay for. However, I did so for many reasons, and it wasnt her who asked us to... she was fine with living in the dorms - her father and I were not fine with it. It took an emotional toll on her in many ways, it was pretty serious some of the things that went on, and while she tried her best to just move forward so as to not appear to be a wimp.... we gave her no choice other than "come home or go to an apartment". So she's in an apartment now, and now that she's been there exactly one month yesterday, she's extremely happy we did it. Her dorms are kinda cruddy, altho HER room was nice because we paid for a bigger room, DH felt like for the price we were paying... it was a dump. We have strict rules for her, even though shes off campus, and I have a key to her place. As a matter of fact, I just got back an hour ago from making a surprise visit ;-)
As far as Im concerned, its MY apartment since we are paying ALL the bills.... your just a guest in MY apartment... haha!
There is no privacy in this house.... you want to live under my bank account and under my roof.... you folllow my rules. If ya don't wanna follow my rules, well.....then ya got a serious problem on ya hands! My rules were not made to be broken or bent.... I don't care if your 2 or if your 200.... as long as I pay the bills and you live under my roof.... this is the way it shall be! Like it or lump it! :-)
I have noticed that once the kids got to middle school, MANY of the parents 'gave up'... they no longer are active in their childrens lives. I don't get that...... what the heck are they thinking!
Gosh, we really got on a high soapbox today.... hahahaah.
Before I started homeschooling Bia, there was a little girl in her class named Samantha who was a relentless bully. I called Samantha's mom to discuss what was going on at school. At the time both girls were 12 years old. When I told this mom the things that her daughter was doing (if any of MY children had been doing what her child had been doing, I would have snatched a knot in their head) she said, "These girls are 12 years old. Don't you think they are old enough to work this out between themselves?"
OMGosh! She thought that since her daughter was 12 that she no longer needed the guidance of a parent. The ONLY reason this woman finally intervened was because I told her that if she didn't, I would go to the principal and the school board. Her daughter's behavior is expressly forbidden in the school's code of conduct.
So, I think that you are correct....but I really do not understand it. Why are parents choosing to believe that middle schoolers should be treated like adults?

Our children wanted to live in an apartment because they wanted to be footloose and fancy free.
The first one wanted to live in an apartment so that he could drink beer.
The second wanted to live in an apartment so that she could have s*x with her boyfriend.
The third one wanted to live in an apartment because we wanted her to live in the dorm. LOL.
The 4th one is an R.A. in the dorm....we will see what happens next year with him....He says that "nobody" lives in the dorms after their freshman year....LOL...I already know that isn't true. I told him that he will go down in history as a pioneer! The first senior at Montana State University to live in the dorm! He did not think that I was funny.
By the way, when I finished my conversation with the mother who did not want to intervene when her daughter was being such a bully, Bia started crying and said, "I don't know about Samantha's mom, but you scared me."
Good. That bi!ch needed to be scared.

Ha Fran! Your awesome... it's good you scared her!! People will know not to mess!
Remember my mess last year? Oh, I thought I was going to prison..... LOL!!
You know, when I hear about some of these stories on the news about parents having taken things into their own control... like the man who hopped on the bus and scared the bullies of his daughter, I UNDERSTAND their rage!!... Sure, I dont like other kids being scared... but when the other adults around who are in charge do nothing to fix the problem, then perhaps someone NEEDS to be scared! Maybe they won't bully another child after that huh! My daughters bully is no longer a bully.... she even goes to college with my daughter, and has told many people "dont mess with her or her brother...her mom, she will f'ing kill you"..... No, I won't kill you, your a child, I will kill the adults in charge who stood by and watched it all go down for over a year and did nothing about it, while my daughter became very ill and is lucky to be alive today! Okay.. I won't KILL anyone.... but I'll hurt ya! My daughters bully now calls her a friend, and is absolutely nice to her. DO NOT MESS WITH MY KIDS!!!!

Sadly Fran, all of the above goes on in my daughters dorm.... ***, drinking, and drugs. My daughters friend ended up dropping out of school because her roommate would have *** in the room, while she was there - awake or 'sleeping'. She went to the housing office about it but was told there wasn't much they could do about it. She couldn't take it anymore, so she left school. Ugh! The boys in the room under my daughters room were expelled from housing, but not from school *makes no sense to me!* for having and doing drugs in their room, and drinking. Oddly enough, they were expellled from the dorm, while many others who do this same thing openly are not.
As for RA... oddly enough, one of the RA's they chose is a girl who has been written up several times for noise violation, has been sent up to the violation board, and has had to report for mediation because of issues she caused with other dormies..... but she gets selected to be an RA???!! THAT was the final straw for me, and I pulled DD out. Sent a letter to the housing office (she wasn't 18 yet, so I got to handle all of that.. and say my piece of mind!) and told them just how CR*PPY they are!
And that's just a few of the things on the list as to why we moved her out...however, I know this isn't the case at all schools. My best friends son has zero problems like this at his campus... well, not that he shares anyways lol.

At MSU the process for RA selection is four tiered and rigorous. Initially about 150 applied, but only about 90 were allowed to participate in the initial (six on one...6 faculty members met with each applicant and interviewed them ) interviews. After the interviews, about half were cut----down to 45 applicants ---- Each of the forty-five had to do a 10 minute presentation on what they were going to do to make the university an enjoyable, safe haven for students. After the presentations the pool was cut to 25. Those 25 kids had to go sleep in tents for two days and participate in leadership classes out in the wild. After the weekend wilderness trip the RA applicant pool dropped to 20. For the life of me I cannot remember what the last step was.......they finally selected 16 RA's.
Last but not least, an RA has to have at least a 3.5 GPA. As an RA Andrew has to provide representation for his building, plan activities for the building, and try to mold the students under his care into a cohesive family. I think that this is going to be a wonderful leadership building experience for him.
When they ask Andrew why he wanted to be an RA he told them that he was going to invite all of the students in his building to religious services once a week (I was shocked that they let that one slide), he was going to invite them to join him at the university athletic club to work out every morning before classes (he goes at 5:30 a.m.), and that he was going to invite the new freshmen to go with him when he volunteers in the community. (He volunteers as a manual laborer at the local cancer center and He goes once a week to read to elementary children during their library time).
All this sounds really nice....but just so you do not get the wrong impression, Andrew is not a saint. :D Oh the stories I could tell you.........
They knocked $8000 off of his tuition in return for him being an RA. That made me click my heels and grin from ear to ear.

I wish Kay's school did even HALF of the above mentioned for their RA selection! The requirements are LOW, only a 2.3 gpa is required! Yes.... you read that right. They had one group interview with all of the applicants, which lasted for all of 30 minutes and then they had one-on-one interviews which lasted all of less than 30 minutes. There were about 16 applicants and 6 were selected. Personally, of what I know of 4 of the 6, I wouldn't ask them to babysit my dead rabbit!

Cool!!! And it won't interfere with our midnight photo walk :lol:
Um...wow....that's all I can say about that. Wow.
You are allowed to grow your lashes! I just got the sense from this particular commercial that it was trying to convince people that "inadequate lashes" is a new problem they must take care of. If your lashes are sparse and you want to change that (you being anyone) - - go for it! But I don't want more commercials implying that we need to fix more things about ourselves!
I have noticed that once the kids got to middle school, MANY of the parents 'gave up'... they no longer are active in their childrens lives. I don't get that...... what the heck are they thinking!
Gosh, we really got on a high soapbox today.... hahahaah.
You should hear the parents at conferences and such. "I told him, 'You are in middle school now. It is up to you." Um...no...6th grade is when your kids (often sons especially) NEED mom to keep on them, teach them, guide them. PLEASE don't ditch your kids in middle school!
Makes sense! What drives me crazy is the parents who call/text their kids during the school day. And I'm not talking about emergencies either! If there is an emergency and a parent needs to contact the kid - - call the office! Of course, that is just the teacher perspective. I'm not a parent!!!
I just got the word that Margie agreed they should have a chat on Friday night, Sept 9, from Las Vegas. They will sign on at 10PM DSP time and hope to see you all there.
Cool! I have a training for work that night (and the next day...ugh), but if we are done by then I can pop in and say hi.

Thats the problem though Christine, too many parents are not keeping tabs on their kids. It seems like once they get to middle school everyone just gives up on the kids and it's a free for all! One thing I have really noticed as well is that the parents, once the kids get to middle school, feel it is the SCHOOL/TEACHERS job to RAISE THEIR children! Ummm nooooooo, hello.... it is YOUR job to raise them... it is THEIR job to ASSIST in EDUCATING them! I don't believe teachers should have to PARENT *MY* children! Teachers have enough on their plates, and now they are expected to be PARENTS to our children too?! UGH!
I swear this whole school/parents/teacher thing fires me up. So many irresponsible adults!

The minute two of Andrew's friends had driver's licenses (junior year in high school) their parents dropped their curfew AND if they did not want to come home at all, that was ok. Christine, I do this as well... it's like a 'reminder' system or a 'question system' for us. I've done it for several years, I don't think anyone has a clue, because their phones are off or on silent. I have told them before that if they get into trouble for having their phones out, then I'm taking their phones away and they will be sent back to the stone ages of finding a quarter and calling home when their ride isn't there on time... LOL!!!
I will admit though, when my daughter was being seriously bullied and she was an emotional mess over it all, I did let her text me WHENEVER she wanted. I didn't care if it was right in the middle of class, etc. I honestly didn't care. I told her (and I told the staff as well!) that if administration would do their job then she wouldn't have to text me, because their wouldn't be a problem to text about!! It was either be her life line when she needed it most, or perhaps find her dead someday. I chose to be her life line. That's what moms do. I don't care what anyone thinks about it. I encouraged her DAILY, EVERY SINGLE DAY, to "text me if you need me!!!". I would do it again in a heart beat.

I am absolutely a mama bear... I have always been, but it became more so when we almost lost our daughter to bullying. I have ZERO tolerance for bullying. I never really understood what bullying does to a person until we dealt with it with our daughter. Having to set your alarm clock every 30 minutes throughout the night and day to check on your kid because your worried your going to find her dead, is something that will turn you into a mama bear.. it changes your life forever.

I can tell you what about it bothers me. The kids I have do not have their phones off. They may be on silent and frequently aren't. So, they will text their parent back in the middle of class instead of attending to the task they are attending too.
They are quite good at blind texting. They put the phone in the hoodies and text back. There mothers aren't the only ones they are texting either, and many are inappropriate.
I'm sure your kids do not abuse the phone usage (and I have many who use it correctly), but there are many who do not. At the junior high level, I have confiscated many a phone being used that didn't even belong to that student. They had borrowed it from someone else.
So far, this choir has been good about it, but they seem rather young compared to the kids I have had in previous years (Not complaining at all about that!! It's a nice change)

As a matter of fact, we didn't have any arguments really at all.... my daughter would stay away from her bully, but the bully would literally come seek her out and do terrible things to her, say terrible things to her and scream things at her across the auditorium, class, etc. My daughter would hang out (read: hide) in the library with the librarian during lunch and breaks, and her bully would come there and torture my daughter until the librarian finally had enough herself and would kick the brat out. The girl would make posters and put them up around campus, etc. So there was so much proof of it, yet noone would do a gosh dang thing abbout it. It was like a movie... except it was real. And you wonder maybe WHY she targeted my daughter? Well..... now that she's NICE to my daughter (that took her father and me almost going to jail...I was ready to hurt him.... literally) she has told my daughter, in writing... that she had a HUGE jealousy of my daughter. She says that my daughter has "the easy life" and "no struggles to contend with" and "wears the nicest of the nice" and "gets whatever you want" and "Lives in a nice house".... and the list goes on. If it wasn't in writing, I wouldn't have ever believed it.... that these things could cause someone to be so mean... sooooooooooo mean.. to the point where a child almost dies over it all???!!! The only thing that kept my daughter from going to the extreme was because she felt a LITTLE bit protected by the bullies friends.... the bullies friends LIKE my daughter, always have and still do, and if they were around they would stand up (literally) and have it out with the bully to protect my daughter. They were always telling the brat to leave her alone, and asking her why.. why do you hate her so much, why are you so mean to her, she's nice to everyone, she hasn't done anything wrong. Her response, always, at THAT time was "she's a nerd... who needs nerds on campus?". Ugh!
Kids are so mean!!! And jealousy can be DEADLY!!!
I wish I knew of a way to help stop bullying. I wish all children could just go to school and feel and be safe. I wish bullies knew what it was doing to their victim, and what it will do to them forever.
My daughter will never be the same. Never. I cry just thinking about it.
I have a VERY clear understanding how it is that a child who has been bullied 'cracks' and then comes to school with a weapon and hurts/kills others. I'm not saying it's okay or that it is right, I'm just saying that I understand clearly now HOW that happens. I wish I didn't have to go through what we did, to come to this understanding though.

Thankfully I haven't ever had to deal with that, but feel like I have increased awareness just from your ordeal.

After this conversation, I just went to both of my dd's and said just so we are clear, "If you get in trouble for texting when you weren't supposed to, the excuse I was texting my mom will hold NO exoneration for you." If it is an emergency, I will be calling the school and hauling your butt out of class. LOL
The girls were both, "yeah we know" but dd1's friend was like "really? That would still be in trouble if they were texting you?" ummmmm yeah cuz if they aren't supposed to, they aren't supposed to. LOL

At our school they are allowed to text/call during breaks and lunch, *if* they maintain a 3.0 (or maybe its 3.5... cant remember). It's the principals way of trying to encourage them to do better.... do well, get privies! If they have this privie they have a special sticker on their id card. If they are caught texting/calling during breaks/lunch (or during class) they best have their id card (with sticker) or else the phone is confiscated and the parent has to come for a conference to get it.

I imagine any sane person who understood the enormity of her situation would allow for that too, but who knows.
Our school policy is that they are too be in their lockers during the school day. (Most aren't, but I won't complain if they are off) Who knows, there may be a day I will be glad that 20 students have cell phones where they shouldn't have them.
Of course, my official stance is it should be in the locker.

Hi ladies! I've been away camping in the bush for the first time. We just got a new tent trailer and had to try it out. Had a fabulous time. But now I'm trying to play catch up!
Weighing in on the cell phone issue...with the kids I teach, we forbid cell phones on in the classroom. Parents can call the school and we will pass on the message. Morning classes are only 50 minutes long. Almost anything can wait that long. If not, call the school directly. Our kids are heavy into the drug/gang scene and we really don't need that during class time.
Did I tell you about the kid this summer who was texting in the bathroom after handing in his government exam?? It was declared invalid! He will have to rewrite it AGAIN in January. This was already a rewrite for him. Dummy!

yeah what was he thinking!
Well it is interesting cuz my girls' teachers will unofficially let them txt when it is time to individually work on whatever. Lex said she has had teachers say something like "time to work on whatever and I see nothing" and the kids openly txt and if they don't get their work done it is a personal problem. Which on the one hand I think that is openly saying you don't have to follow the rules. but on the other hand I think it could help kids be more responsible. ie. I have something that has to get done and if I choose to do something else, I pay the price.
Your classes are only 50 minutes? Which grade is that again? The high school classes here have the A day/ B day system so their classes are 1.5 or 2 I think. Only 4 classes in the day.

I teach high school, but with so many of our kids diagnosed with ADD or ADHD or learning disabilities, we find short classes for core subjects works better for them. Our afternoon classes are for options and they're an hour and a half or so. But those are hands on classes which better engage these kids.

If you look at your layout with the different backgrounds - sometimes you see things (or in my case catch things you wouldn't have normally seen)
For example - if you played with perhaps - moving the background papers - this way or that - do they extend to the edges.. you can easily see that with the 3rd option - all black...
It just helps to see the layout in different views
I don't do it all the time, just as a safety check that the layout will look ok..

Ok, on the Mac - we have a way to say Link a type of file to a program
for example .jpg's , .psds, .pngs, , etc... are LINKED to CS5, and, Adobe Bridge..
and, Presets related to CS5 - such as Actions, brushes, Styles, Patterns, Etc. They are also LINKED to CS5
If they are not linked to CS5 - they just look like a piece of paper to me.. can't tell what they are.. but if I go in and right click them (On a Mac that brings up File Info)- link them to Adobe PS CS5 - walla, I can tell exactly what they are..
Same for Plug in files (that I have purchased)..

I had just done a back up the day before.. so, my backup is pretty current.

Geez! This thread is moving so fast lately that I can't keep up! I realized I would have to go back about 13 or so pages to read everything, so I compromised and read 2! :D. I doubt the squatty body will be asleep long enough for me to do that! I now understand what my mother meant when she used to say all the time, "I'm too old for this"! Yesterday I had a nail appointment and I took him with me. By the time I, got him out of the car, carried the diaper bag and him in the car seat across the parking lot, through the salon and to the nail room, I was exhausted! I then decided afterwards to go to Babies R Us to buy some things I think might make my life a bit easier, so when I got home and Drew & Amy got home, I just sat in my recliner and did NOTHING the rest of the evening! :D
PQ so sorry about your computer problems, and Debi about you iPad issues. I hope it continues to work! I dropped my iPhone in the toilet last week and after not being able to hear the person who was calling for a day, now it's back to normal. Yay!

That sounds good arual. Hope you are feeling well enough to do so.
I don't know what is happening with all that is going on earthquakes, lots and lots of rain, fires, etc. I decided I am going to enjoy myself while I can, one never know what else will come up.
I am going to laptop crop and will be getting in on Friday and I am so excited and trying to stay well. When I get to excited an upset it hits me in the stomach.
So have been taking Pepto Bismo to keep it calm.
They are quite good at blind texting. They put the phone in the hoodies and text back. There mothers aren't the only ones they are texting either, and many are inappropriate.
I had a student once who I KNEW texted frequently in class, but he was so good at hiding it. He could watch me and text, then get it hidden before I came over. He did this in all his classes. No one could catch him. So I made a rule - his hands had to be on his desk at all times. That worked!
I wish I knew of a way to help stop bullying. I wish all children could just go to school and feel and be safe. I wish bullies knew what it was doing to their victim, and what it will do to them forever.
My daughter will never be the same. Never. I cry just thinking about it.
Wow- this is horrendous! I can't believe what was done to your daughter...and that no one did anything about! No wait- - I can believe it - - I guess that is an even sadder thing!
We had a big anti-bullying campaign at my former school. Bullying still went on, but at least there were systems in place to try to catch it and stop it. At least someone would do something if it was taking place.
After this conversation, I just went to both of my dd's and said just so we are clear, "If you get in trouble for texting when you weren't supposed to, the excuse I was texting my mom will hold NO exoneration for you." If it is an emergency, I will be calling the school and hauling your butt out of class. LOL
I LOVE YOU!!!!! :)
It is a pity that some kids ruin it for all. If kids would just use the phones at appropriate times and for appropriate things, I wouldn't mind them using them at school. Sadly, they are such a distraction, used for cheating, etc.
Sorry, it's under File > file info..
to see your LO under various backgrounds - hit the F key - that is - IF YOU HAVE your preferences set up the way I had you set them up..
Wow - - I'm learning new things here!
People with computer woes stop reading here.
Why? 'Cuz I just ordered a new laptop. WAHOO!!! I've had the money for about a year, but didn't feel right spending it when I was unemployed. Plus, my laptop works...it is just dying a prolonged death. So I kept putting it off. But there were some awesome Dell discounts recently and so I saved about $500. I placed my order. WAHOO!!!! I can't wait to get it and play. Of course, I have to wait until the 20th or something...but I can be patient!
Okay - cute school story. I passed back the spelling tests today. Kids who get 100% on the normal words and 100% on the challenge words get their name put on a star (that is then placed on the wall). I called one little boy's name and he jumped out of his seat and yelled, "Really?! Wahoo!" It was so cute because he was genuinely surprised and excited.
I think the stars are going over well this year. Both periods seemed to get excited by them.
Lunch time is almost over...time to get ready for drama class.

It is so funny that the texting came back up. I had a texter in class today. First one I have caught with this group of kids. He was wearing a hoodie (surprise, surprise) I just happened to notice he was looking down at his pockets and caught a glimpse of a red phone frame. He has been told that it won't happen again. We shall see........ He sat in row two BTW.....he may be moving to row 1 tomorrow.

Ohhh that stinker, Maggie! A friend of mine got a call yesterday, it was test day in Geometry, and her kid took a pic of the test (she has it first period) and then forwarded it via text to all her friends! Oh I think my friend was going to kill her kid. She called me and said "I just got a call.... make me count to one million, ten times and slowly, before I head over to the school to spank that kids butt!!!!" .... ahahahahaha.... sorry, it's not funny but the call was funny... she was in such a panic over it and I could almost hear the anger popping out of her eyeballs.

I had to warn a kid today too. Finally getting some scrapping time tonight...after an all-out temper tantrum from Sebastian. Oy! That kid needed an early bedtime and got it...without all of the pre-bedtime fuss!
Maggie - the kids get to wear hoodies in class? At our school, hats/hoods are okay outside, but once the enter the building they are a no-no. At my former school, they weren't allowed AT ALL (well, I guess hoodies were since they are sweatshirts...but only outside and hats not at all). It also trips me out because at my current school students can wear sports team clothing and half the boys dress every day in SF Giants gear. At the last school, no logos were allowed at all except for colleges. It still trips me out to see all the sports stuff!
Sadly, kids love to use cell phones to cheat. Grrrrrrr.
I learned a new way of cheating this past weekend. My brother-in-law says they used to buy the plastic folders (the ones with two pockets) and that they were see through if you pressed down on them. So they'd put their notes inside, place the folder on the floor, and step on it to read their notes. If the teacher came over, they just moved their foot. Looked totally innocent! Tricky little sneaksters!
I used to get the kids I tutored to tell me the latest cheating techniques. They would because I didn't teach at their schools.
My BF recently told me a story about the one time he cheated in school. He wrote the answers on the desk, just like his friend had been doing all school year. But then the brainiac called the teacher over to ask a question...and guess what she saw? He's such a dork!
>>aruaL<<

Our kids are allowed to wear hoodies in class but the hood part is not allowed to be up on their head... they can only wear it as a sweatshirt inside any class/building. Hats are allowed too, but only outside.
Maggie Macpaine

I love the cheating story. And yes, they can wear hoodies, but the hood must be down. Of course, IL can get rather chilly in the winter. Plus, the school has air that works :)

They said, oops, our new design for ipad 2 is sooo bad, that we are coming up with a new one
so, just keep the one you have for oh, 4 - 6 weeks, while we come up with a new one..
and, then we will send it to you FREE of CHARGE!
What company sends out a product that has a DESIGN flaw that will not HOLD THE TABLET IN PLACE or put the tablet to sleep when you close it!!!!
That is a horrible company.... And, then they made it almost impossible to return it, until my husband got on the phone and used a very very bad word and got the supervisor on the phone..
and, then used the very very bad word with the supervisor.. and, then he got the return code and instructions.. we still have not seen the credit on our credit card however.

And, they depict the horror of war - like a Philippine soldier holding the head of a Japanese soldier (obviously dead)... like it was a trophy. so, this is before the US had taken over the Philippine islands

Hi all! I've been MIA because I and my family have been sick recently. Laura - I can relate, but at least our dogs seem healthy (well, as healthy as a 15 year old dog can be ). I sure hope the vet was able to diagnose and take care of him/her. It's not been a big deal here, just the fall colds, but you would think DH was dieing. I know it hits his chest more than mine, but come on, I still taught every day and made dinner 4 of the 5 days during the week. He can't be bothered to get off the couch.
Debe - glad to here your iPad is OK. I would have had fits to have seen smoke coming from mine. I live by that thing any more.
Chris - glad you are having fun with DH.

you are going to be waiting for a LONG time. Sandy does not have surge where she dives, I have BIG surge, which does two things, first kicks up dirt and second moves the photographer a LOT and not just in one direction, back and forth. so if you want to get an idea, attach yourself to a tennis ball in a sandstorm and try to take a picture.. but I keep trying, I will post just for you if anything turns out decent. :D

Glad you were able to get some diving in Christine! Kevin went with his boyscout troop Saturday and did a scuba diving training. Who do you think is HOOKED on it now?! Yep, Kevin. He wants to do all the training and get certified. Jeremy use to be, but it's been over 15 years probably, so he needs to start from scratch. I think both of them, and now Kaylin wants to as well, are going to go through all the training and get scuba trained/certified/whatever you call it.
I'm still sick, but I *do* feel SOME improvement. Not a ton, but enough to know I'm not going to die and I'm on the road to being better. LOL!
Lilly went to the vet and her doc said she has an ulcer on her eye and thats why she's acting like she's so sick. Her put her on two eye medications and a cone on her head - poor baby!!
I am having a hard time getting her to eat though. So I fed her piece by piece of her dry food, by hand... and then slowlyyyyyyy got her to drink a little bit of water. It wasn't much, but it made me feel much better as it had been two days with no food and no water, I was really worried. I don't know if MAYBE some of this is just sadness too? She is extremely close to Kaylin and Kaylin had not been home to see Lilly in 6 weeks until Wednesday I think it was.... Lilly was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited to see her!!! I mean like wow, I didn't know a dog could get so excited! She hung out at Kaylins side all day, then that night Kaylin went back to her apartment. And, really, since that day Lilly has been mopey and sad and has not eaten much at all. Then she got sick, and so I dont know if she was already feeling ill and thats why she's not eating or if she's just sad. Ugh, I don't know which it is but my heart is sad over it. She looks so miserable!

you are going to be waiting for a LONG time. :D
Use a tripod. :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Glad your feeling a little better Laura. !!
When one of my dogs had an ulcer - my vet refused to treat the eye. Sent me to a doggie opthomogist. I had to give her drops day & night every 4 hours (Keith was never around when there was a problem at home. - oops gotta go out of town Road trip). So many visits later and $1000 out of my pocket. I told the doctor - you know I love this dog but I just can't afford you. Give me a script for the drops. And tell me about how long she should take them. She said let me check her eyes. And I'll tell you. Well magically. Just like that my doggie was soo much better this was the last visit. I just had to use up yhr drops I had. And we were done. Doggie doctors. Yuck. We have a great fantastic one know. And since then I've learned to give them their own shots. Iv's take temps. Etc. So they normally don't have to spend the nite after procedures.

Oh gosh, I got lucky then! My vet bill was only 178 bucks. A little more than half of it was for the two eye drops and the rest was vet visit and eye staining. One follow up the end of this week will be 34 dollars. So Less than 250 total. Woot!
He stained both eyes to check them and with the light shining at the eyes we could see the ulcer. It's pretty large.
I love our vet. I think their prices are fair and I love that they involve us. They don't just say this is whats wrong, now pay me. They really involve us in the process by showing us whats wrong, explaining how it happens, how to fix it, etc. As a matter of fact, I think they are nicer and more involved than our people doctors! Ugh!

Hi Christine....I was just wondering if you had ever heard of a place on the web called Carbonite? It is a company that automatically backs up your computer every day and you don't even know it. My husband uses it on his company computer and after my labtop crashed months ago (with all of my pictures and lo's) and now I have it on my desktop. It costs $50.00 a year and now I don't have to worry about losing anything!

I love Carbonite except that it won't back up EHDs. Except someone here got it to back up their EHD, but I couldn't. I called Carbonite and they said they don't yet offer the service. Sad! BUT... I ended up finding Backblaze which does allow backup of EHD and I love my backblaze, a couple times now I have had to fish a file from there cause I accidentally deleted from my drive. Phew :-)
