what i'm looking to try and do is use a background paper as the "colour and texture" of my title on a LO as it would be perfect I'm using PSE6. Now - and this may be a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing  - i can't help but think all i need is to type on a (grants) mask but i don't seem to be able to. Des anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong or how i could replicate this look using some other tool before I am forced to reach for the rubber which feels like it might take all day!

many many thanks

I all you need to do is make your title on a text layer, and then clip it/group it with the background paper layer.

+ Create you text on a layer
+ Place the background paper on the layer above your text layer
+ while on the background paper layer, press Ctrl+G (or right click on the layer and select group with previous)

Does that do the trick?

Like all things "Elements" - there are many ways to accomplish the same thing

you can use the horizontal or vertical mask text tool option

*open your background paper

*Choose your text tool - click on the mask option

*type your text and click OK - you will have a selection in the shape of your text

*control j puts it on it's own layer

(you will not be able to see your text cut out of the paper unless you turn off the original layer - to turn off the original layer, look to the left edge of the layer in the layer palette and click on the eyeball - that turns the layer off - click on it again - that turns it back on) -

If you want to be able to move/manipulate the text once it is on the paper, you can also
1)type text using the selection/marching ants option (in the tool box, if you right click you will get 4 options, either 3 or 4 will work)
2)select inverse (ctrl-shift-I)
3)make sure your paper is a layer and not a background (if its a background, double click on the lock and hit "okay")
4)hit delete

now you have your text on the paper, on its own layer, and it can be manipulated with shadow, bevels, etc.
