probably file > new? or if you've already created a new file, then just find that window (which could be behind your photo window). each new file opens in a new window (smaller screen with the blue bar on the top). hth?! :)

If your image is maximized, you won't see the other images also open. check either in the Window menu and click the name of the new image you created, or in the photo bin at the very bottom of the screen.

You have to be able to get from your photo window to your layout window so you can copy or move the photo onto the layout

Geezz....I can usually figure these things out...but I am not getting this. Nothing on the tutorial looks like what is on my screen when I do the things it says. I am still locked on creating a backround.
Should I create my back round first and then import the pictures i want ?
and it the book that came with it...it shows on the right side the different layers of your lay out...and the only one that has come up there so far is the one picture I have gotten this far with. The pic come in in a frame on the right and next to it...it says ....backround.
then if I try and get the backround I want...it replaces that pic with it....instead of showing all the different layers...geeezz..does this make sense to anyone? I know I am confused
Barb :(

I am trying my second(and third) attempt at a "first page" in PSE 3. I do not like the first page I made, though I did save it. For my second attempt, I selected 3 photos, resized them and created a project(background page), used the dropper for the color I wanted, got the texture, but could only get the pictures on the "page" by cutting and pasting. The text made it's own layer and I had no problems with that. Then, when I wanted to add the journaling block, I could not move it, because all the photos were on the "background" layer and when I tried to undo it, I deleted a rectangular-shaped portion of the "background". So, I deleted that work and tried again.

This time I selected 4 photos, resized them. I created the color and texture for the background. All the images stay below the work area as thumbnails, but I cannot get more than one "image" at a time. PSE 3 has a different work area look than PSE 2, which is the program featured in the tutorial which I printed. I am having a hard time navigating through the differences. I was trying to add layers, but then I couldn't get clear work space for the next layer. The image I selected to be a new layer became the new background.
HELP!!

Okay, PSE3 has a Photo Bin which has all the open images in it. They're all open. If your image is Maximized, you won't be able to see anything else but the one that's on top. Restore the image (click the little double square icon on the Window Bar), so you can see all the other open images.

What method are you both using to put the photo onto your background? Are you dragging/dropping, copy/paste? Or just opening the photo image?

Don't get frustrated, we'll work through this together :)

Ok...I just wrote you a detailed list of what I was doing and then it wouldn't send it. sooo..here I go again.
Click on : File
Click on : New
Click on: Blank file Then a box comes up and asks you for the name of this file... preset to Custom
width 8.5 inches and Height is 11 in. Resolutions is 199 Color mode: RGB color and backround Contents I did at white? OK so far???
then click on OK and a white box comes up

The way I use to see all open windows in PSE 3 is: Click the window menu>images, uncheck maximize, click window menu again>images, then click in tile. This will show all windows in the working area even if they aren't sized correctly at this time. Then I drag and drop each of these windows onto the background which then creats the individual layers. After dragging to the background, I minimise the orginial picture windows to have only the layout open. Hope this helps

Ok...I did what you said...and the one image came up on the left side with a name on top. Then I went back and clicked on window/image/tile...and there still isn't any more names that come off of that. This is what is messing me up. I thought maybe I had to save them or something.
Now I brought a picture in and now they are sitting on top of each other in different windows. :(

click on the move tool. (should be on the left on the tools palette, where the paint bucket pouring icon is highlighted)... whatever you have clicked on over there is what your mouse will do. so if you want to move or select or paint or fill with paint, etc. hold your mouse over them to see what they do. and there are hidden tools under them if you right click on them as well. quite an important little palette! :)

To drag a photo onto your image background, you have to use the Move Tool. Hit v on the keyboard to get that, or just click the icon in the Toolbox. Drag the photo right out of its window and drop it on the new image/layout window

Since all of your windows are separate files, the Layers palette will change depending on which one you're viewing. The photos have only 1 layer, Background. Your new image/layout has 1 layer, background, and as you put photos onto it you'll get more layers. If you click onto another photo, it will show 1 layer in the palette. If you click back on your new image/layout, it will show more layers as you add things to it. Make sense?

You're getting there! Don't worry so much about what's going on with the palettes and other stuff. Try to follow exactly what the tutorial says. If you need to switch layers, it'll tell you. Otherwise, just do the operation it says without second guessing yourself! You're doing it! Nice job!

YIPPPPPPEEEEE......YAHOOOOOO.....I finally got it....
What I wasn't doing when I tried to drag the pic...was to watch where the little dot was going and then let go of the pics.....Oh my....I knew it wasn't that hard...just had to do it right...well...this only took me all day....gezzz...
Now I have to figure out how to put some other neat things on it.
Those things that you can down load from here...can you buy them on disc too...cause I have dial up and it would take forever to down load them.
Thanks...Thanks...Thanks....and Thanks again for not giving up on me..... :p
Hope you had a nice weekend.
Barb
PS..I am sure you will hearing from me again though. Smile.... :D

YIPEEEEEE!!!! WE are excited with you! Glad you hung in there :D You didn't really seem overly frustrated either; at least I didn't hear any swearing from over here, LOL!

You can purchase CDs in the store, they have beautiful kits and different things on them than the downloadables. To download things on dial up, you'll need a download manager program, lots of little free ones around, and set up to download overnight and don't be disappointed when you run into time outs or errors. Lots of DSPers have dial up and order CDs and download some things too.

And don't worry: you just got this software installed yesterday! You're making great progress already and learned a lot. I had a few weeks of yelling before I had a clue. I was lucky I had my sister to help, but wish there had been something like this forum and tutorials when I started digi scrapping.

Now, before you forget, make another layout!!!! You can follow the tutorial as many times as you like, each time learning more and adding your own touches.

In March I'm teaching the DSU 160: Intro to Scrapping with PSE class again, just click the link in my sig line to learn more about it. Would love to have you!

Yay!

This comes up a lot, so I edited the PSE tutorial to include using the pHoto Bin in v3, and how to get the Windows off Mazimize Mode and into Restore/Multi Window Mode. Refer to figures 12a-12d, and please let me know if this is helpful

Ok...not real fancy but I got one done....as much as I could do tonight.

I was going to send you the pic on here...but just can't get that now...clicked on the pic icon and it said.....enter the text to be formated....sooo....guess you won't get to see it.
I will try another one tomorrow...and check out the discs I can buy from you all...can't wait. Until I get them...I will just scan a lot more pics.,
Have a GREAT week....and Thanks once again for all your help.
Barb
