View Full Version : Can't Get ACDSee to Run

I have downloaded ACDSee Photo Manager 10 but cannot get it to work. When I launch it, it literally takes 90+ minutes (yes, minutes) to load, then immediately closes down with an error code that says there is an error. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it twice, using the info on their website. I will put in a trouble ticket with them, but wondered if anyone else has had the same issue and may have a tip.

I am running Windows XP
I only associated .png files to the program during install (I thought maybe if I did all types I was overtaxing the program - but then again, I have tons of .pngs).

Thanks, in advance, for any thoughts on the subject.

Maria

I haven't encountered any similar problems, so it is hard to offer any great advice, but ...

My first thoughts would be:

+ tell us more about your computer ... how old/new is it, hard drive(s) - both used and available space, how much memory
+ you mention an error message, are you able to read the message (or does it go away quickly)? If you can see it, what did it say (either specifically, or generally), was there an error code. Alternatively, can you capture a screen shot of the error?

Hopefully Kathleen can offer some tips - I didn't have any problem with it, thank goodness. They really are good about getting back to you, so hope they fix it for you fast!

Also, is your digi stash on an EHD or networked drive? if you have a lot of files with long filenames (longer than 255 characters from the drive letter to the end of the extension) it can cause Photo Manager to crash. PM also doesn't like some Scandanavian characters.

I'd be happy to work with you on fixing this issue!

I am not using an EHD, but I just bought one, need to set it up and learn about it. It's pink :) Would having ACD work with the EHD only be beneficial?

I have a one year old computer, a Dell XPS 720, with a 300g hard drive, that has 81g used space. I am guestimating that I have about 26g of .png files.

The only error I get is that the program has encountered an error (no number or error name) and must close.

I appreciate your insight.

OK, the issue with ACDSee shutting down as soon as it opens is usually long filepaths...that's the entire thing from the drive letter ( C: ) to the extension on the filename (.jpeg or .png or whatever.) So before you do the next tutorial take a look using windows explorer to see if you have lots of folders nested inside folders and long folder and file names. If you can move or rename them it might help. The total length should not exceed 255 characters.

The issue with it taking a long time for the program to even open is different. I want you to download and run the registry tool at the top of this tutorial (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/joomla/acdsee-resources/acdsee-photo-manager/common-questions/51-errors/215-registry-tool-to-delete-user-settings). When you start up ACDSee cancel out of any box asking if you want to catalog your files...you don't.

See if any or all of these three things help and let me know, ok?

I too am having trouble with ACDSee "encountering a problem and must shut down". I downloaded a trial version and have been using it for about 15 days. It does only happen with certain files. Can you explain how to use windows explorer to determine the file name length. I thought I looked and they weren't that long, but maybe I didn't look right. I was really loving the program until this started happening. Laura

Can you explain how to use windows explorer to determine the file name length.

In Windows Explorer, first go to View > Toolbars > and make sure Address Bar is checked.

You should be able to navigate to any folder and see the path in the address bar, like this:

http://cdn-1-service.phanfare.com/images/external/1466784_1419796_48128832_WebSmall_3/0_0_270c49a5c3b555b605f5b371636fda2b_1

You can count the number of characters, or paste into a program like Word and get a word count. In my case, this path is 69 characters, plus the characters in the actual file name.

OK I tried that with two of the files that won't open - they are no larger than 175 characters. Now what - I really like ACDSee but am afraid to buy it because there are quite a few downloads that it won't work on. Laura

P.S. Thanks for your help.

sometimes there are just glitches with some files...not sure why. So first, see if those are from Scandinavian designers...some European characters seem to flip ACDSee out. If that's not the issue then try an experiment, use Windows Explorer to copy the files into a new folder and see if that folder still crashes ACDSee. Every once in a while a get a folder that's just messed up. If it's a corrupted file, it will still crash even when copied someplace else but if it's just the folder switching to a new one will fix it. Make sense? Anyway, if that works you can delete the messed up copy then move the new folder to the location where the other one was. If not, do you still have the zip files to extract from?

Let me know if that helps. I will look into other things we can do. It really helps that you already know which files are doing this though. We should be able to get this ironed out and ACDSee working for you!

OK I tried that - through ACDSee I moved the files into a new folder. I don't know if I used Windows Explorer - that confuses me. Sorry. It didn't work, but I was able to tag the files and they do show up. The error message didn't close ACDSee, just stayed there but once I was done tagging - it closed ACDSee and I had to reopen. I don't know - very frustrating.

Using Windows Explorer to move some files was to determine if there's just something about them that make ACDSee want to crash. Moving them inside of ACDSee will just transfer the same error to the new file. I hope that clarifies the reason. I know we always say 'never move things around outside of acdsee' but just for the sake of diagnosing the error, sometimes we want to move them outside of acdsee. Clear as mud now? lol

ok, just heard from Heidi...it sometimes works to move files into another folder then move them back but do that using windows explorer, not acdsee. That might work and you wouldn't have to retag anything. So test that theory on one of your problem folders.

Kay, thank you so much for always being so ready to help :) lots of interesting info here - never had the problem described but good to know all these tips!

Sorry I think it was too late last night to think straight when I was trying. I used Windows Explorer to make a new file and then tried to organize in ACDSee. It still closed. The items I am trying to open are just freebie embellishments so it really isn't a big deal, but I don't want this to happen with some of the kits I have. Any other input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Laura
