Who's coming to Salt Lake City in January

I thought I'd start this thread so we can see at a glance who will be coming (or trying to come) to Salt Lake in January.

Chris (Gundi) is trying to set up an official crop for the 17th January 2009, but the crop will go ahead whether it is an official one or not.

So.... I'll definitely be there, as will Chris.

I'm there...round trip on Amtrak is only $138.00 and I just walk out the door and across the street and hop on the train...What hotel is everyone staying at?? What would be fun would be a train "crop" if there are several us coming from the west coast...

Chris, what do you know about the history of the railroads in Salt Lake? My grandfather was working for the railroad there in about 1909ish. I figure it's appropriate that I'm planning on arriving by train!

Not a whole lot except of course the "wedding of the rails" :D We all learned about that in elementary school. I can even still sing at least part of the song. (For anybody who doesn't know, up near Ogden,Utah the railroads were joined together for the 1st intercontinental railroad, it spanned from east to west and the final spike driven was a golden spike, they had a big hoorah and everything. :D ) My grandpa actually was a big railman as well, but not that long ago. Yeah I agree it was destiny that you would arrive by train!

During the summer they have re-enactments of the driving of the golden spike at Promitory Point which is about an hours drive from Ogden. My DH acted out there to earn money for my engagment ring 36 years ago! Ogden was a railroad town, with our 25th street being a notorious gambling, prostitute, and other illegal pursits area. In the 1920's Al Capone said that Ogden was to rough a town for him:lol::lol:.
Of course they cleaned it up years ago and now they are trying to renevate many of the buildings. The TV show "Everwood" was filmed on 25th street. My accupunturist's office is in one of the buildings on 25th street. One evening I encounter a ghost!!!! No doubt in my mind that that was what it was! Very eerie!

I was in Renton a couple of months ago when I went to Seattle for my son's wedding. His dad and I had seen Jimi Hendrix in concert way back in the dark ages, and so we went to see his burial site--it's a beautiful cememtery! Small world!

Still trying to decide on how to get there...
Amtrak is $136.00 round trip , leave at 9;45 am and arrive in SLC @4;00am
Southwest is $250.00 round trip...leave around 11am and arrive around 2pm
Southwest would get me there quicker but Amtrak is cheaper and across the street.
Any ideas on which one to choose??

When I checked Amtrak, the train fare from Seattle to SLC was $151, but would take more than 24 hours. Maybe dd was looking at sleeper rooms?

I'm in town through Wednesday of this week through at least Wednesday (maybe longer) and I am trying to get together with as many members as I can to at least say hi (it'd be great if we could do a day crop, but not sure if everyone's schedule will allow for it on such short notice). I've already heard from Gundi, fade2pink and JaeDee (okay JaeDee, I haven't heard from you in a couple of days!) about possibly getting together on Monday the 9th for like lunch or dinner or something? Anyone else interested?
