I just optimized and now I can't ACDSee. I was going to backup and then I get an error message that says I am not able to open the program. I tried to post on digiscrap forums and I'm having problems there to. Each time I try to logon it kicks me back to the index page and can't get to the forums. I'm sooooooooooooooooo lost without ACDSee. It is amazing how dependent you get on it. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks,
Kim

Its a bit late for you now but I have become a bore with posting backup first then optimize, optimizing once did very weird things for me too :(
Kim I so feel for you, I know how awful it is to be without ACDSee, I have posted at the site for you, hopefully you will hear soon. Meanwhile, the email address you need is:
support1@ACDSystems.com
My one wish is that somehow they could make ACDSee a little more stable. it is SUCH a wonderful program but the little bugs that poke their heads out are a total pain!
Good luck, keep us up to date!
Ohh, I'm so sorry Kim - I rely on ACDSee so much - it's horrible when it fails. Hope Meryl's post results in a fix for you!!

I don't understand what is going on. I try to post a question on digiscrap forum and I keep logging on each time it bumps me back to the index page and asks me to log on again so I can't post anything on that website. Arrggggggggggggggggg.
I tried uninstalling, removing cdx files, reinstalling, regedit and it still doesn't work. I finally went to the website and downloaded a free version of ACDSee 2009. I couldn't get ACDSee 10 to work. But, I can't figure out how to restore my backup from my EHD. Any pointers? I'm dying here. Very grumpy when I think about all the hours I put into tags etc.
Please help.

I totally understand the thought of retagging - I use PSE Organizer but the thought of retagging 17GB of stuff when I change laptops from XP to Vista has made me decide that I'm just going to wait to tag anymore stuff

Thanks for all your help guys. I have already send a e-mail to them. Just trying to be patient waiting for them. I've had problems in the past and did all of this before. Actually, I spent a long time on the phone with them. Didn't realize they weren't in the US so I had a pretty hefty cel phone bill. : (
Do you know if the 2009 version is better than ACDSee 10?

The major change between 2009 & 10 is that it has a feature called "embedding" that saves all your organizing in the file. So if you move files or your database goes wacky, you can "catalog" your files again and pick up all you organizing again.

Well, if this really works it would defiantly be a wish come true and i suspect I would not be alone! Yahoo!!!!

No, you would not be alone. I sooooooooooooooooo love ACDSee but this is the 2nd time it has given me pretty big problems but embedding sounds like a great feature. I wish I had it now. :( One thing I also noticed was when you import pictures there is a way to tag it at the same time. Another thing is you can send others with ACDSee tags too.
Heidi or Meryl,
Can you explain to me how to restore a backup? I have 4 incremental backups on a EHD. When I follow the instructions given it says that it can't read the selected bacup file. Can I use my ACDSee backups in the 2009 version?
I'm still waiting for ACDSee to contact me :(

This sounds like it might be worth getting for this feature. Can you explain it a little more? How is it different from backing up?

Embedding -- all your organizing information (caption, author, categories) are put into the actual image file.
If you moved that file outside of ACDSee, you run Database | Catalog files on those images and it pulls in the information again.
It backups the organizing into each file and is stored there. A safeguard so to speak.
Importing of pictures has changed now too. I haven't played with that as much but basically it should in 2009. "The new Import tool puts this power into the hands of users, who can now rename, back up, categorize and add keywords to images as they are acquired from a camera, card reader, CD/DVD or other storage device."

Kim, email at digiscrapinfo@gmail.com and I can try help you.
How do you verify that info is "embedded" Is there a way that you can see where it is stored?

Kim I can totally understand why you want it verified lol! I think I'd want proof too! I don't know about the inner workings, but I guess a very simply way to try it out would be to tag a few files, go to Windows Explorer and move them. Then back to ACDSee and see if ACDSee can now find them.
If this really works its a HUGE step forward - I know I am not alone if discovering I have moved files/renamed files etc outside of ACDSee and lost tagging.

I haven't looked at ACDSee 2009 yet, but what it almost sounds like is if they are adding keywords to the EXIF/Meta Data of the graphic files. This would surely be a help. I think I will investigate this weekend!

Meryl,
I did what you suggested and it did work. :D
I'm pretty good about not moving files outside of ACDSEe. What my concern is if ACDSee gets corrupted or has some kind of problem (what I am experiencing right now) that I will not lose all of my tagging. (it seems like that might be happening to me now):cry::cry:
I've downloaded ACDSee 2009 and it looks good and you can buy an upgrade for 30.00 right now. But, I would hate to put all of my tags in again and then have it get messed up again. I guess I'm starting to lose a little faith in the program. But, I can't imagine not having it. I just downloaded Picassa to see how it is. But it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as powerful as ACDSEe. One thing that was kinda neet was somehow it recognized tags I had on it. (too bad ACDSee cant do that)
Sorry for ranting but this whole problem is just bugging me.

Wow thats great Kim :)
I know how you feel about loosing faith, just remember to back up, and optimize often (and in that order...) so you have something to go back to. Before I had my disaster I was very lack-a-dasical about backups, sort of felt it could never happen to me, but it did!

I've done backups. I've actually always been pretty paranoid about losing stuff. Problem is I can't use the ACDSee 10 backup in the 2009 version.
I've already started re-tagging (the link you gave to speed tagging really helped. I'm on my way:D ) The hard part is going to be retagging all of my pictures. I had every single picture tagged multiple times and I had ratings on them too. That will take me forever to duplicate. I wonder if anyone knows any hints for that?
On a positive note, I didn't lose any pictures. Just my organization and that can be replaced. It will just take a LONG time. But it can be replaced.
I appreciate you help and encouragement Meryl and Heidi.  Thanks so much.

Glad you got it fixed! My problem (last week) were too major. My DH moved my files over to a new EXH I got and moved my ACDSee files too. I lost all my info, previews, and org list. I tried restoring my backup and it didn't work. And I called Tech Supp and they didn't have an answer either. So I had to start from scratch again. I'm almost done the last part of tagging. So glad you didn't have to go thru all that! I have ACDSee 10 but guess the "embedding" didn't work for whatever happend to mine.

Thank Kathleen! It's not been a labor of love that's for sure! I told my hubby to not be nice and move those files again...LOL! And I think probably I should backup with the thumbnails this time??
Kathleen
10-11-2008, 12:51 PM
I wiah I knew the answer about thumbnails... to me I don't think the problem was with the thunbnails, but rather the location of the files and the database not knowing where to find them. That being said, the reason not to include thumbnails is your backup will get quite large. If space is not an issue, I guess why not include thumbnails.
I do have to say that this thread (and other recent tales of woe) make me want to find a way to test ALL my backups ... actually restore to a different computer and make sure that the backup files have what I think they do!

Actually, it didn't work. I'm starting all over too. I'm just starting on ACDSee 2009 now. My ACDSee 10 can't even be opended. I've been waiting since Monday and tech support still hasn't contacted me. Heidi has been good and giving me info though. (Thanks Heidi) The speed tagging system for my digi products is great. I'm going to take forever tagging my photos though.
The embedding feature is only on 2009. That is why I am upgrading to it.
Better go tag now.

I totally agree with you too. Now that I am starting over I want to try and restore to another computer to make sure that it works when I need it.

I've read somewhere on the the digiscrapinfo site that it is really better to do a full backup each time with the thumbnails in case you do have to restore it. Something about that it was easier to do with a recent full backup. I had been doing the incremental backups each time until I read that. Since then I have been doing the full ones.
I bought a new laptop so now have to move it from the desktop to the laptop and new EHD. I'm not really looking forward to doing it. Too much that can go wrong.
