ok ladies (every one is welcome open to all) a new challenge for us too do make a layout describing what you were doing the day the first African American Man Obama was elected to be president. Nov 4/5th 2008 depending where in the world you are.

I was listening to CNN and they were saying that this is one of those days like when Kennedy was assassinated and Princess Di died for decades to come people will remember what they were doing when they heard the news.

So to record this bit of history and to be part of it, my challenge is for you to do a layout describing what you were doing and maybe how you felt.

Use photos if you have them or just journal totally up too you. No restrictions anything goes hehehehehe

As always I know there has to be a prize so I will give away 2 coupons for a page kit to 2 random layouts.

Due Date Dec 5th
Post your layout in the granny gallery please or link in here if doing double duty
Oh and feel free to include layouts about other significant events such as what you were doing the day Princess Di or JFK died.

or let us know in this thread..........

This sounds awesome....Shawn had tears in his eyes...and of course wouldn't let me take a picture. I was kind(very hard to resist pic taking) and let him have his moment....
but in Shawn's words tomorrow(today)..." it's on like donkey kong", so pictures will be taken...

sounds like a great idea...but I was not doing anything special...just going to work, coming home, cooking tea, yelling at hubby, talking to mum on phone, chatting at dsp.....just another ordinary day for me on this extraordinary day for America!!

I was sleeping and woke up to the news, though I was not surprized.
I am not sure how I feel though... sad, glad and very compasionate toward our new leader.
He has a huge mess to clean up and no matter what he does, someone is going to be upset.
As far as the making history part, I find it rather sad that such a moment in history will be remember because of the color of a mans skin and the --- of anothers running mate. I am glad though that that stepping stone is behind us and hopefully no more heritage will be lost to such things.

It's a significant time in history...he'll be remembered for being the first black president...but hopefully he'll overshadow that by doing great things while in office. I'm proud to have been a part (albiet small) of making history. Although the color of his skin did not decide my vote (I'm black too...even though I may look hispanic in my photo).

I hope he makes great strides in fixing what the Bush Administration did during it's 8 years.

I had CNN on and off most of the day while I was home. I also had CNN on my computer. I heard the results at 8:03 pm. My DH and I watched the speeches. We also had my 13 yo DD and my 10 yo son watch Obama's speech. I wanted them to experience this moment in history as I believe it will be a turning point for their generation especially. I have great respect for McCain, and his concession speech was very gracious. Obama's speech was INCREDIBLE! We TIVO'd it. It brought tears to my eyes and hope to my heart. I hope this election will not be remembered soley for the color of a man's skin, as Wuvie suggests. Obama has so much more to offer. I believe he is a true visionary who will help bring people together and make some very positive changes in American government. His campaign was one of a kind - his campaign worked tirelessly to bring many, many people forward that had not been involved in the political process previously. I have great hope for the future of our country under Obama's leadership.

Okay - I will get off my high horse now. I guess I should journal all that on a scrapbook page as Caro suggests. Great idea Carolyn!

All day during voting, I was at the school. I volunteered to help the PTA with a bake sale. We all got our turn to vote. All night long, we were tuned in to CNN. My husband and I were sitting in the "man room" watching the states come in. I was just about to go upstairs, and then they said Obama won. I ran back down and almost fell, lol. I couldn't believe what was happening. Seriously, this is a great time for all Americans, no matter who we voted for. I think Obama is going to be a symbol, because he is bi-racial. I hope he becomes a symbol for what he campaigned about, and that's change. He definitely got our country more involved in the process and I hope to see people continue to stay involved, and make sure he does what he has promised. I heard alot of people say they voted for him because they are black and he is, too. Well, voting for a racial reason doesn't actually help us move past racial problems. It makes them worse. However, being an informed voter does. Choosing him above all else says something. He deserves to be there. I am white, but my husband is black. We have a child, together. I didn't vote for him based on the color of his skin. I watched EVERY speech, followed the rallies, read all of the polls, and did my own homework on their issues. I think what he plans to deliver will be amazing for my child's generation. I have faith in our government, again, and that itself is great. I am happy with america's choice. I think he can do it!

As for the racial issue, I honestly hope nothing bad happens to him (assasination wise). Our country has become a huge melting pot of all races and I don't think we can handle that, if the worse were to happen. Not all people are racist. Not all people think minorities are beneath us. Sure, alot of black people paved the way for Obama to get where he is today, but so did many white people. I think America is ready for this and as much as I hate to think of his race being an issue, it will be and is. I just hope that America will give him a chance to make things happen. Maybe we can all come together and stop the racial nonsense!

He said it best when he said he will be EVERYONE's president, not just the ones who voted for him, or the poor/needy, or even black. EVERYONE! :)

love ya... :)

I had CNN running all day, but at 11 p.m. last night I was right in front of the screen, staring, speechless, crying, moved and elated. Never ever have I been so moved by politics or an election - I never cared. But this was history, this is moving and I for one had rooted for Obama (I am Canadian), and am overwhelmed and in awe. Simply because of the courage that the American people showed. They voted for a Black President and that requires courage and conviction. I am not American but could never have slept through this because it is not only what he promises or what he might achieve, but for the huge step that so many Americans took to vote for an African American President. No wonder I love you guys.
Yes, I was very moved and had tissues close at hand.

Oh, Lisa, you said it so well. Yessss, yessssss, I hope nothing bad happens.
It was something I thought about too, but you put it so much more adequately. Yesss, he said it best when he said he will be EVErYONES's president......and that's what moved me again, to tears.

I am so proud to have been a part of this historic event.

Well ..... we didn't actually get to vote .... no dont be upset ...... our neighbour collapsed and we spent most of the day at the hospital with him and his very distressed wife. So they didn't vote either.

We were at home though when the results came through eating some taco bell.
And Lisa said what I wanted to so well. :D .... He will be everyone's president.

lol, I will try. Right now I feel drained with all the emotion, but Reba inspired me and will give it a serious try though I feel like lifting Reba's......it says everything I want to say. I still can't believe the wave that went all across the whole world and I am so proud.......maybe now, finally, Obama will restore the much needed respect and love for Americans overseas. I have been really tired and fed up with all the criticism that the US keeps getting from countries that have needed your help in the past.
Perhaps now all this will also change.
Yessssss, lol, I better contemplate a layout, hehe.
And I am not even active in the granny thread. SORRY, but I had to .had to, had to give you my 2 cents worth....

You can find photos of Obama on his myspace page or anywhere on the net...that's where I'm getting mine. I'm not selling them or the layout I create with them, so I can't imagine that I'm breaking any laws...I did the same for my World Trade Center pages and my MLK jr pages. Just a suggestion.

Off to create my page.

Honoring Ann Nixon Cooper... (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=287764)

The words from Obama's speech were so hopeful, and what I see and feel through this layout is the history--and the fact that history is made by all of us.

My hope? That there comes a day when we don't see skin color. Obama is also white. My grandchildren are Japanese/American. My niece's husband is bi-racial. My brother's wife is of Japanese descent. My family is a melting pot!

My hope? That the youth that were stirred up by this campaign continue to be active in changing their country for the better, that they see that they, too, can affect and make history.

My hope? That we all realize that it's global, not just local, and we act accordingly. It's been absolutely wonderful to get to see the response first hand from my international friends here at DSP. It's given me a deeper appreciation of how what we (and I mean the global we) do can affect others. You know what they say--the ripple from that little pebble thrown into the water can become a big wave!

For me this historical day wasn't about the man elected to be the next president of the United States. It was about the look I saw on my kids' faces when they realized someone just like them had been elected. A man with a black Daddy and white Momma just like them.

PS He's not black. He's not African American at least not entirely. I'll give you 50%. He is a man that happens to have a black Dad and white Mom which makes him biracial.

JenniferG
11-06-2008, 01:12 PM
I'm also a child of a white mom and black dad... My kids are too young to understand anything (2 years and 3 months), but one day they will.

He may be bi-racial, but he's still a "black" man in the eyes of the world. Just like in slavery days where if you had even a small percentage of african blood in you, you were considered to be black. Except in my case, people say I look hispanic...I don't see it. Personally, I think black/white (I've heard us called oreos- I love oreo's!!!) kids have that special tan that many pay lots of money to get! And for us it's natural!

I've been trying to think of other things that happened during my lifetime. I've already scrapped the World Trade Center 9/11/01...And I haven't really followed the Princess Diana events so I don't really know that much about it, even though I did rent The Queen when it came out on DVD...but I don't remember what effect, if any, it had on me. So she's not a possibility. I was born in 1982 (my birthday is on Monday!!!!!) so I would most likely remember things around the late '90's. If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great. (I've also already scrapped MLK jr.)

Lol, no, I think we should do them on Obama, he is the one that inspired all of us in this thread. I haven't done mine yet because I am not feeling very great right now plus I have had problems with my colors.

I am kind of 'drained' right now with history because I am so busy working on my own heritage historical layouts, lol. Maybe I should put the link in here to one of mine? what do you think??????
However, Barrack Obama is the inspiration that moved me to tears and I didn't care whether he is black or white. I just saw his caring and love for the country, I felt his goodness and kindness. Color did not come into play when I rooted for him, just his total attitude and brilliant intelligence, plus his overriding signs of class and restraint when he was attacked by Palin. He kept his cool at all times, always displaying class.

I too have been gathering photos and newspapers from everything about Obama - his high school is a couple of blocks from my apartment and his grandmother lived down the street from me. My girlfriend and I had gone out to lunch and saw the news reporter there and knew she had pass away - just before the election. It pierced our hearts then and even that she hadn't made it to see it happen.

As I was looking at the layouts you folks have posted... I was thinking - I should print them all out and drop them off at the house with his sister for when he comes home in December.

I'm gonna try this - if you DO NOT want me to print yours ... please PM me ... and I won't.

Sounds great but I too had fallen asleep! I had managed to make it until it looked like he was going to win and then dozed off. When I woke up, I had slept through both the acceptance speech and concession speech (is that the right spelling - sound's like a speech to promote snacks - LOL!). At any rate, when DD woke me up we talked about it for a few minutes and then went to bed. I agree that it is an important step along our path as a nation. Being from the south and just north of the birthplace of the KKK, I worry about his safety but trust that those in charge will keep him safe. It will be interesting to see how things unfold over then next 75 days...who he choses for his cabinet.

And of course, what breed of puppy will the girls get?

JenniferG
11-06-2008, 09:04 PM
I think they should get a golden retriever! my fave dog breed!

dawn-in-nz
11-06-2008, 09:40 PM
According to our tv news last night they want one of these - a golden doodle - yes I didn't make a typo, a doodle!!

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:DZ6ZvAFstpAi3M:http://www.goldendoodles.jeremyinc.com/images/goldendoodle_puppy.jpghttp://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:T28dGEG94mHwqM:http://www.puppysites.com/deluxe/waggingheart.jpg

I think one of the girls has allergies and this breed apparently is allergic free. This is what I found on the net:-

Goldendoodles are a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. The puppies take on the best traits of both breeds. The hybrid cross between these two parent breeds are terrific family dogs that are friendly, intelligent, affectionate and easy to train. Plus, like most Poodles, they don't shed, or shed lightly, and may not produce an allergic reaction.
