Does anyone know a good instand messaging app (free) to use for sharing photos. I used to use Hello but that kinda went bust. Now I'm using Yahoo but having many problems with it.

I'm wondering if there are any other programs out there that anyone is using that they really like. I need to switch but not sure which to go with.

I don't know if I like it but I use MSN IM with my family. You can share a photo in the message or open a sharing folder which is what my family and I use. We just dump pictures on there when the person is offline and it is a nice surprise to see what the left you.

The photo share when you are online for me takes a while so I don't love it plus the pictures aren't full sized like in the sharing folder.

We have been using MSN for years and since I finally got all of them to open an account on there, there will be no changing soon so i don't know what else is out there. Hopefully someone else can help.

Yahoo IM uses screen shots like Hello used to, plus general file transferring capabilities.

I have Yahoo right now and I'm having a big problem, or Yahoo is! Seems when my friend and I share photos now...they come on the screen all pixelated. We have no clue why and we can't get any support! Just started happening 2 days ago. Before that it was fine. I even downloaded v9 but that didn't help.

Never used MSN before.

I found a program that MIGHT work similar to Hello -- www.qnext.com. It's free. If someone else is willing to try it out, we can test it and see what it's like. It acts as a universal IM application, you can connect to any other IM you have - Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ - all at once. Since I use ALL of those, it's pretty convenient.

*** Well.. it's not exactly like Hello.. can't take screenshots and share them right away, but you can share 'photos' on your drive with contacts, so it's not as quick and easy, but workable.

Diane, it's great that this connects to all the other IM apps. I see where you can drag a photo into the IM screen but you can't see if from there I don't think. You get a link and the other person follows that to a webpage where the photo is. Do you think this will work as well as just viewing in the IM screen like Hello? Just wondering. If you have to go to a webpage to see it, that just another way for someone to hack into your computer no? I'm just rambling here so feel free to comment.

I know what you mean and I've experienced it, but the pixellation goes away once the file transfer is complete and you click on the icon at the bottom of the photo.

Really? It seems ours just stays there...but I will try again and see what happens! I can't remember if I clicked on the icon at the bottom or not. All I know if that the image was there for over 3 minutes or so and it was still pixelated. I'm definitely going to check the icon to see what happens.

Well, the pixelation doesn't go away so something must be wrong with Yahoo. I hope!

I'd love to find a 'universal' IM client that still supports file and photo sharing from AIM and Yahoo.

I'm still SO SAD about Hello. :(

Diane, I did some more reading about your little find and am going to try it. You're welcome to add me: debs_media

Well, I'm happy to hear that my little find might work out. :) Hello was an easy way for me to share with my sister, so I was just as disappointed to lose that when Hello was discontinued as the help it was for mentoring.

I'll have to do some digging on the file/photo sharing. I agree that allowing access to your machine is NOT the way to go, but if I remember from the brief play I had with it, you could pretty much lock down who has access.

Debbers, I'll add you too once I fire up my laptop where I installed QNext :)

Well, I'm glad to see others are trying it out. Seems to be pretty easy and my friend and I can share images quickly. A bit different from Hello (boo hoo!) but it's better than some others.

Debs, can I add you to mine too?

Please feel free to, Norma.

I was able to send a photo of our grandson at Disneyland to a friend who was using AIM with it. AIM file transfers are notoriously picky. I'd NEVER even been able to get a photo through using AIM itself to this friend. I haven't tested Yahoo yet.

Thanks Deb. Glad it's working! I'm assuming you mean Yahoo IM? I had it but dumped it otherwise you could test it on me.

I sent an image successfully from QNext to a Yahoo Messenger contact today - so that's working great! I'll have to get people to test them reverse now, too.

Yahoo allows screenshots, that's really SO convenient. I don't know about QNext with screen shots yet.

QNext doesn't support screen shots just now - you'll have to save to a jpg file real quick.

But I wrote to them and asked about it. They told me it was on the list; and only the most requested features on the list will be in the next version.

So you know what that means? Write them and BEG for screen shots!
