Can anyone please translate this to PSE 3?

This is a fun tutorial, but it is for PS and I have PSE 3. Can anyone tell me a way I could do it without the masks?

There is a way to do a kind of layer mask in PSE. Emma has a couple of tutorials on it in the tutorial section. But you can probably do it using the eraser tool as well. Just not as fixable.
