I've been using a demo copy of PSP8 that came loaded on my computer when I bought it. But it's only good for 60 days, so I'll have to buy something soon. What are the advantages of PSP9 over PSP8? Is the transition pretty easy?

My other option is to switch to Photoshop Elements 3, which I also have a trial version of. So anybody who uses both PSP and PSE3 out there? Any informed preferences, and if so, why?
Thanks!

I use both and both have their pros and cons. I think that in the end you will stick mainly with the program you feel most comfortable with and that is really about personal preference. Just try them both for a while and see. For me at the moment that is Elements 2 but this could change. There are scrappers doing beautiful LO's with both programs.

Whichever you choose DSP will be there to help
Good Luck :)

I am not really much help, seeing as how I have never used PSE. PSP is great! and 9 would not be a whole lot different for you as far as tools and such. it does have some pretty great photo editing tools and art media tools, if that is what your into. Of couse PSE has the large brushes and layer styles, so its a trade off I am sure. As long as you have the trial version of PSE, I would go ahead and try it out and see for yourself, and you could always get the trial of PSP 9 too just to see if it is what you would like.

Have fun!!

If you have to buy PSP, get 9. The Art Media brushes are really cool, and some nice photo editing.

If you want to do a lot of digital brushwork, backgrounds, and be able to make cool elements, get PSP

If you want to make lots of cool elements really fast, easy, but don't care about brushwork, get PSE

I followed pretty much the same route you did. I had a 60 day preview of PSP8. During that time PSP9 came out. I don't know that I can say much to compare them since I'm so new. But you will probably not be able to buy PSP8 anyway (at least not at regular stores).

One thing I would recommend is to make sure that you save all of the extras that come with PSP8 (even the preview version) because PSP9 does not have nearly as many. If you don't know where they are on your computer, you can find help on this website (from people that know a lot more about this than me). I was able to move these files (brushes, frames, etc.) and use them in PSP9.

Good Luck!

Check http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_alp.php for support of PSP. There are updates to download, as well as extras for Paint Shop Pro. There is a box for questions - I have found many answers there. PSP9 has many enhancements for photo editing that PSP8 did not have. They also have a trial of PSP9.

I did move many of the brushes & frames, etc. from PSP8 to PSP9 -- but these new versions install a folder in the "My Documents" folder for user additions. This does help to keep track of them -- but there are also some in the PSP directory in Program Files.

I just copied my entire PSP 8 presets folder into the My PSP Files folder. PSP automatically looks in there for stuff, no need to set the path locations. I have a big folder called PSP 8 presets, separate from my personal creations and downloaded stuff. Works great.

Pam, can you get the 8 presets from Jasc.com? I need to peek over there! Thanks!

I have looked at these sites and downloaded all the presets, frames and picture tubes. Most of them, if not all of them are exe files (I'm still downloading) so do I just install them or is there something else I have to do?

Thanks

The files I have downloaded from Jasc install the elements to the correct directory - find where the file you downloaded is and run it. It may ask where your PSP is installed - especially if you are running more than one version. If you have any filters in other locations (I keep extra brushes and masks on an external hard drive) you can go to the Paint Shop Pro preferences and "tell it" where to look for additional filters.

The links listed by Haley are still good links, however Corel has changed the website to where you no longer are able to go to Jasc directly for finding tutorials. I did however find their reply to the original question of Why Should I Upgrade to Paint Shop Pro 9?
