View Full Version : A place for us 30-somethings who aren't "Real Men" or Grannies

So...there are threads for "Real Men who Scrap" and threads for Grannies (and I know they are so kind to invite us GIT's), but how about a thread for us 30-somethings who are trying to scrap while balancing careers and kids?
I'll start by introducing myself...
I'm Lisa...I have two daughters aged 3 and 17 months and I am a stay at home mom. I also own a property management company with my husband and in-laws for which I am responsible for the bookkeeping. I am also the treasurer for my husband's church. On top of this I am 100% addicted to digital scrapping and DSP.

Great idea Lisa but can a 20 something with no children join? :D
and what about a 40 year old with a 4 year old LOL

Absolutely!!! If the Grannies let all us GIT's in...we will be all-inclusive as well.

I named the thread poorly :) Everyone is welcome! I was just looking for a place to chat/vent etc... I tried the Granny thread, but it moves too fast and I had to read 100 posts a day to figure out who everyone was and what was going on. Couldn't keep up with the Grannies :):)

I've never even attempted to look into the granny thread. I figured I didn't really belong there and as a newbie (which I still feel like) the thread can feel a bit overwhelming.

You feel like a newbie?? You have 4 times as many posts as I do! I feel the same about the GT...fabulous community, but is it really for me?

I think most of my posts has been in the gallery and not so much in the forum, I'm really trying to balance my time at DSP at the moment between the gallery and the forum. I thought I was ready to move on from the newbie stage a couple of weeks ago but then I attended the newbie chat the DET has and was mistaken for a newbie.

Jeanet how can you be a newbie - you've been here 2 years AND you're DET!!!
I don't fit the title of this thread either - I'm a 40 something with a 10yo. Hopefully I'm a long way off becoming granny material. Never did like the name GIT and you're right that thread is far too active.

Me, me, me. Can I join? I am Krys and I am 33. I have three children, 2 girls at 5 and 3yrs and a baby boy who is about to turn the big 1. I feel like a newbie too. So new in fact that I am unsure what GIT even means..lol. I assume GT means granny thread? And I have never gone into the GT before either...that thread with all those posts intimidates me.

aaahhhhaaa, I knew it had to be something simple. Thanks.
It is not even 7am and it is already hot and sticky. And they are predicting 47degrees for here on Monday. yuck ( for US that would be 116F...according to my converter)
Lucky it is Australia Day and DP doesn't have to work...but still........yuck

So does anyone hate spiders as much as me? We have been in this house for 3 months now. Renting...thank goodness we didn't buy the thing. Anyhooo, we have started seeing Wolf spiders. At first I thought it was a huntsman. But then noticed the markings. They come out at night...we have lino, and you can actually hear them walking on the floor. *shudder* Soooooo creepy. At firts I would catch and release. but now, they cop the thong (oh..haha, the shoe thong...not what you thing a thong is...:))
This should take you to the image of the spider

One good reason for not living in Australia :D
Actually I'm not too bothered by spiders - though I'm not so keen on THAT size of spider. It's all the other slithery, wriggly, crawly poisonous reasons that would put me off living in Australia.
eeeewwww spiders .......
we have become a serious mouse house over this winter ..... Need to get some traps where I can't see the devastation once the trap works KWIM?? Seriously thinking of getting a cat. Wouldn't have to feed him for several days.

My problem right now isn't spiders, but rather those annoying brown ladybugs that fly all over the place and somehow weave themselves through the tiny cracks in your home. They are all over my bedroom and master bath. As soon as you kill them, then come twice as many as before!
I love the grannies ..... they are very supportive but I find it real hard to keep up ... I do get the daily digest so I can have a quick flick through via email but I hardly get time to reply. Lots of hugs to them and I will still join in over there as much as I can but its also wonderful to have a slightly slower thread to chat in as well.

Well dang it .... I have a migraine coming on so its get off the PC time ... gonna upload a LO quick then go lay down.
I've decided to finally get DDs birth story album together [its taken me a while because the most wonderful day of my life was not exactly that wonderful, a total nightmare until I held her for the 1st time] but I feel the time is right and here is the welcome page.

LOL at your big hairy husband Nicole :)
I'm 33 (34 in a couple of months) no children just yet, haven't been that lucky in love lately. I have met someone new though and things are going well so far, so fingers crossed for me.
I have a very spoilt rabbit named Coco and share a house with brother and his partner who are having a baby in July (first time for them, and first time Aunty for me! :yahoo:) So I am currently brushing up on my knitting skills and making all sorts of cute munchkin clothes :)
We are renting too, but the house is brand new, so insects are rife as is always the case in new buildings, our neighbour has mentioned red back spiders, which I am not happy about especially cos bunny lives mostly in the backyard. I mostly don't mind spiders, and am happy to catch and relocate, but I dont want them touching me and I dont like the ones that can do damage :(

I can't believe I started at thread that already has 3 pages of replies...not feeling well tonight so I'll be back in the morning to comment...
A few quick replies...Welcome to everyone! I'm very exicited about the response. (maybe now I'll get my silly post-count up?)
I can't believe it's so hot in other parts of the world...here in upstate NY we are also having a heat wave..it's about 30 degrees (Farenheit)
I don't do fuzzy creepy spiders (but we don't have too many dangerous varieties around here)
I forgot to mention my fabulous husband when I introduced myself...we've been married for 10 years and he is currently my hero. I had/have a nasty headache and he came home early today to watch the kids so I could nap.
Will write something more intelligible (is that a word?) later.
Welcome to all!

Oh and I'm crashing here too, I turned 40 last year but still posing as a thirty something, no kids either so I don't quite fit the criteria but definitely closer than a Granny or a Real Man!!!!
I am a Kiwi, born in the UK and at home in Brisbane Australia. I have been married for 18 years and have two Persian cats who made the move to Australia with us in 2007. I love the beach, the bush, travelling, photography and wildlife - also spend a fair bit of time on the computer, blogging, facebook and here at DSP

just please don't call us GITs. I know what that means in British slang (git- Noun. An idiot or contemptible person.), and I don't want to be a git. Tho I am sure I am at times, at least the hubby would say so. ha.
Tina, 35, married nearly 16 yrs (together 19, High School sweeties), 1 kid (like you don't know that), Tate- age 11 3/4! Senior Designer here at DSP, and like Margie, you can find my boring info in the team bios.

I'm sitting here feeling like a total dunce, I had this amazing weekend planned going to go up to a rural property and camp there with the new beau (he is camping on family property at the moment) and I had everything planned and was half packed, and I logged onto my internet banking and realised I had totally miscalculated all my finances this pay, so as well as only having $100 left for a fortnight, I can't actually go at all
Way to go dumbo?!!
Now I'm all miserable because this relationship is still new and feels all exciting and as well as feeling like a prize idiot I dont get to have an awesome romantic campout weekend (or even see him!)

awww Q, that is awful. I so hate it when that happens. And it happens to us heaps. I really need to do some sort of finace-y-budget-y thing.
Oh and that spider...yes. yuck. And we saw a mouse the other night...really small one. Maybe a field mouse. Anyhoo, I checked my friend Google. I was expecting that the mouse may eat the spider...well turns out that the spider eats the mouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Q, This house is new too. And all the skirting boards have a gap..around the whole house. So that is where they are going and coming from.

Budget, Budget, Budget - it's the only sensible thing to do. We went from never having no money by the end of the month to buying a house just a few months later after finally taking the time to make a budget. I feel so foolish for waisting our money like that for years. I've still no idea where all our money went.
I'm married to a guy with a master in finance and yet when it comes to our own finance he's clueless  He keeps claiming that the amount is too small for him to care.

I'd like to join in too. I'm Nancy, and I'm almost 48. We have two girls - one 15 and one almost 12. I'm a bit of an older mom having the youngest when I was 36. They are a joy! I have been married almost 17 years together 18 or so. WOW I can't believe that. I am just getting back into digital scrapping after a year break. I'm an avid cross stitcher and had to just pick one hobby at a time. Now I have more time so I'm getting back into scrapping again! What is the Real Men thing? I guess I'm out of the loop on that. I can totally relate! I too had a career in Finance and do bookkeeping work now, but our household finances always suffer. I am good at creating a forecast (how much I think we will spend), but not so good at keeping with a budget (how much is available to spend).
We have a goal to be debt free (excluding the mortgage and car loan) in December...if so, we will take the kids to Disney World...any suggestions? Sometimes I think I need a job just to support my grocery habit - I can't stand an empty refrigerator...I've tried coupons, but I need a better method.
If anyone has suggestions, I'm open to them...(as long as they aren't crazy! - I've seem some money-saving ideas that are a bit out there)

Hello - 38 slave driven teacher with one 21month old son (adopted) and currently hunting down a sister for him (dont worry I dont keep the spears sharp when I go child hunting!) This is a cool thread - reminds me a bit of the zeroes in Nicole's forum. I can relate to one hobby at a time even though at the moment I have no time for any of them!

I can relate too. I studied accounting before I working here. So budgeting is in my blood. I do our homes finances. And I would love suggestions too, I have read quite a few good books on cutting expenses. There is one out there called America's Cheapest Family...now...I CANT do half of their suggestions, too extreme. But they DID have some really good suggestions in there too. So if you see that one at your library, than I would pick it up.
Oh thats one thing we do...we NEVER (ok HARDLY EVER) BUY books, movies, music. I think I go to the library 3 times a week, we LOVE redbox (do you have one of those?) $1 for new release movies and you can get online ahead of time and reserve it so that you dont have to drive all over town to find a movie, and my hubby has an ipod so if we really like a song sometimes we just get ONE song or a couple from one artist, rather than spending the nearly $20 on a CD.
We also turn our thermostat down whenever we leave the house.
ummmmm.....you can also save a lot of money sometimes if you shop around for your car insurance. We didnt realize it, but we changed companies and our rates dropped almost $40 a month and we had the exact same coverage.
My big weakness is Starbucks and shopping and eating out. So we have had to limit ourselves and I am all about consignment shops. We have some pretty nice ones in town where they only take "expensive" name brand items that look new. Its great! I have found lots of stuff there! I also have a group of friends with kids that are all around the same age ranges and often I pack up my kids old clothes that are still in good condition and give them away and they do the same thing. Ok...thats all I have off the top of my head for ideas :)

I'm kinda glad there's no Starbucks anywhere near me or I'd probably spend a small fortune there. Love Coffee! And I'm what I refer to as a "coffee snob." I only like good stuff. No cheap stuff in a can for me!

Ok, I'm caught up on this thread! I never even attempted the granny thread because, seriously, I can't ever catch up. I couldn't believe when I first got on DSP and saw a thread with almost a 100,000 posts! And knowing myself, I'd have to start at the beginning!
Thanks for starting this thread! I actually had the same thought the other day. I like Q's idea of starting it new every month (or even week).
I'll be 33 next week. I have two little girls who are 6 (with the attitude of a 16yo) and 3 (still in a cute stage). I have an awesome DH and we've been married for 10 years. I stay home with my kids and that is all the career I can handle at this point! They wear me out!
I joined DSP in, like, 2005 but stuck with paper for several more years. This past October I had a project I wanted to do for Christmas and it was 6 of the same book. Since it didn't make sense to do that in paper I looked into digital again. I found DSP for the second time and have only left to sleep since!
I am totally hooked!
This will be fun!
Christy
P.S. Should I feel guilty that while I'm typing this my DH is cleaning the kitchen floor?

CONGRATS Heather.
 I love the Aretha hats, BTW!
Thank you! :) I watched the inaguration with my students (I teach 6th grade Social Studies and Laguage ARts plus 7th/8th drama) on Tuesday and they all cracked up when Aretha took the stage. I couldn't blame them; I had similar thoughts!! In fact, I can't blame my students for a lot of things they do! When they thought the poem read at the inaguration was boring, I had to agree. And when they cut through the bars of the ramp to enter the classroom (I'm in a portable and we have one of those long wheelchair ramps we are required to have...and it face the opposite direction from which we all come and go so it is a big pain to walk all the way around it and then walk up it)...anyway, they always cut through the bars of the ramp, thus avoiding walking so much. The other teachers get mad at them for doing it, but I do it too!!! (Which of course totally cracks the students up!!). My colleagues always say, "You are as bad as the kids!" My only rule is that they can't cut through during emergencies or drills.
Anyway, happy Saturday all (for those of you on the same day of the week as me!)

What a great thread, and 3 pages is more my length, something I can handle. That granny thread..... Well, it's just intimidating.
I am Robin and I definitely fit the 30-something mama juggling hobbies, work, kids, and more. DH and I will have been married 13 years on Monday (and he has to lead a 4H meeting that evening ) and during those 13 years we have managed to fill our home with 5 kids (ages 12, 9.5, 6, 4, and 2 tomorrow), 3 rabbits, and a cat. The cat is totally DH's cat; he only tolerates me as something to walk over to get to DH. I homeschool the 3 older kids, with the 2 youngers under foot, and teach Sunday School. Plus, I volunteer on the leadership team of a large homeschool support group, and I recently (last August) became a distributor for JuicePlus+ as well.
Juggling is definitely the word for what I feel like I'm doing most days, but I still find time to scrap because I absolutely HAVE to create something on a regular basis to feel sane. For a long time I sewed and knitted, but digital scrapping is so much easier/less messy and allows for more creativity on my part. So, digi-scrapping and DSP are my "therapy", although some months with what I spend in the store I wonder if a traditional therapist would be cheaper.... ;).
Oh I love multi Quote ....
name suggestion (and I know people too):
A Spot For Us To Chat
and if we want flair we could be Spotties
or
Chattin' Hot Spot
(again, Spotties or Hot Spots)
Love the Chattin' Hot Spot name
LOL - I resemble that! If you'd have told me 20 years ago I would have a 4 year old at 40 I would have laughed in your face. But I wouldn't change it for the world!!! There's quite a few fun benefits of being an "older" mom :D
WooooHoooo Another 40 year old with a 4 year old
Yes, very nonsensical!! But it makes me LMBO, too! Which is especially good when you are immobile with a broken ankle and bored to tears!
(Yep, I'm going to milk this for all it's worth til the cows come home!)
You can't see it in my Aretha-tar, but my hat even matches my dress! :D
Just to help you milk it and cos I missed it .... how did dyou break your ankle??
What if we started a new thread each month? (re long threads)
:(
Like the idea of starting a new thread every month ... that would keep the threads shorter and much easier to sort through
So sorry to hear of your weekend but think of the wonderful time you have the next time you see each other, will be extra special cos you haven't seen him in a while.

Great suggestions ... one thing I have started to do is buy the shop brand of food rather than named brands .... and even gone to the economy brands for a few things such as pasta, flour etc and buying bulk when things are on sale.

Now why did I not have teachers like you when I was at school .... I would have probably done better with some fun teachers around instead of the ones that tried to brainwash you into studying. Making studying fun or even having a fun personality helps a great deal.

I love to lend out my books, but in case they don't return to me I keep extras. Someday, I would love to have my own used book store...
Can't remember the last time I bought a CD..I still have a collection of cassettes that I love...who has time to listen to new music?? All I ever hear are my kids sing-alongs :)
I also trade kids clothes with friends and my sister-in-law...in fact I don't think my second child has ever had something truly new unless you count hand-me-downs that were never worn or only worn once.

Oh I'm so glad to read this... My husband thinks there's something seriously wrong with me for doing the same thing. Then again he doesn't get why anyone would read just for fun. One particular book I have 4 copies of. I have the hardback, the paperback with notes in (Yes I make notes, I get all sorts of ideas when I read), the small paperback for traveling and then of course I also have the book in English to compliment the Danish version. So much is lost in translation.
In case you are wondering - the book is Circle of friends by Irish author Maeve Binchy - I just love the way she's able to tell stories about real people. I can only hope to one day be as good as she is.

We used to buy lots of books BC (before child) but then there was no money. Now the child reads so avidly we couldn't possibly hope to buy enough. We are frequent library visitors. Children are allowed 15 books on issue at once and ds fills his quota each visit and usually reads them all in a week. The good thing is we have very similar taste in books so we share. It's fun to enjoy the same stories.

I agree...the book is much better...I love to see books turned into movies, but then usually disappointed with the result. I am also a fan of Maeve Binchy...have read most of her books. My favorite is Light a Penny Candle.
One book I have many copies of is The World According to Garp by John Irving. It was the first book of his that I read, but it got me hooked and I have read/collected all of his books since.
And I couldn't say how many times I've read the Thorn Birds. And then I went on an Anne Rice kick for a while...I could go on and on.
I should SO start collecting the other language HP books. Not that I could read them, but they have pretty covers. hahahaha.
It's not really another langauge, but I did buy HP and Chamber of Secrets while in London on vacation. I noticed that the first book is called HP and Philosophers Stone in the British version.

Just to help you milk it and cos I missed it .... how did dyou break your ankle??
I stepped in a small pothole and my ankle rolled outward. I've hurt this ankle twice before - June 08 and May 06. It's probably almost Jell-O by now!

Hey Nicole,
Have you ever read the Tightwad Gazette books? I found some great info in those during the beginning of my frugal adventures, although some suggestions are a bit on the extreme side!
I'm also a huge fan of Stretcher dot com.

I reread books I love, too. Although I don't have multiple copies. I pretty much read the copies I have until they fall apart and then buy new ones. :D Of course, DH works for a bookstore, so that makes it much easier (and cheaper!)

I LOVE to read too! My faves are usually suspense/mystery novels. I just finished The Broken Window by Jeffery Deaver. He also wrote The Bone Collector (did you see the movie with Denzel Washington and Angeline Jolie?). I love James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, Mary Higgins Clark et al.
And I'm a big bargain-hunter. This is one of my favorite times of year cause things are on clearance everywhere. If you have kids head to children's place. They have all there clearance 30% or 50% off the marked down price. Some Old Navy's also have 50% off the clearance price now. I got tops and pants for my kids for $1.50 each. I buy all my kids' clothes a year ahead on clearance.
Also, keep an eye on Target. They are clearancing toys, so it's a great time to stock up for birthdays and Christmas. All but two of my kids presents this year were from past clearances.
And if you want to stock up on free toothpaste, household items, makeup and other fun stuff CVS is the place. There is an awesome website that will help you take advantage of all the great deals at CVS. Here's a link
http://www.moneysavingmom.com/
On the right side of the page there are links. Check out CVS 101 to get started. But be prepared it's almost as addicting as DSP!

Christy I think we read the same books!!! LOL...but I have to admit that I DONT know what is wrong with me lately but I am addicted to "fluff" novels...you know..ones with NO point that are all about boy meets girl and cute as can be...total romantic comedies! My hubby keeps making fun of me for it!
I just read The Sleeping Beauty Proposal by Sarah Strohmeyer, it was REALLY good! Also read Confessions of a Shopaholic and Can you keep a secret? by Sophie Kinsella (also very good books!) I am currently reading Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot (its not too bad...a little harder to get into than the others) and I am PATIENTLY or not so patiently waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book to come out by Janet Evanovich. I have read most of James Patterson's book (but just picked up one called Letters to Nicholas or something like that, that i hadnt read yet) and I just recently finished The Host by Stephenie Meyers (WAY good!) Ummmm yeah...I am a reader..and as long as its not tooooo sappy love story or historical (I know...this would be very educational, but I just cant get into them!) then I will read it!
OMG - you guys love Maeve Binchy as well? I stumbled across her books at Costco because one was titled "Tara Road" and of course that caught my attention! I had to buy it just because of the name!!! That one and the two others that "go" with it are my favs (Scarlet Feather and...Evening Class? I forget). Anyway, I bought a huge set of her books off e-bay for SUPER cheap and was thrilled. I always feel better when I have a stack of books waiting for me to read them!
Of course, one of my all time fav books is the Agony and the Ecstasy. LOVE that one!!! And I'm a big John Grisham fan. My dad even bought me two autographed copies of his books. Oh yeah - I feel special!!!
I rarely buy books new either unless I find a good deal at Amazon. And I totally keep copies of all my fav books. In fact, I usually don't buy a book until I've read it and know I want to put it in my library!!!

I did not introduce myself properly
I am a SAHM just left my 30's a few months ago. I have 8 trouble makers ranging from 16 through 1 (no furry family members though). Some you will see in my LO's here but the older ones don't want to be on the web so sometimes you might see them blurred. Believe it or not I also have a DH and we are almost married 18 years.
I have to say this thread moves quick so I will try to keep up but I don't know if I can (the kids have slowed me down )

I think Tara Road is probably the only Maeve Binchy I've ever read. I vaguely remember enjoying it - I'll read anything that's well written. However, that's not my usual choice of reading material - you'll find me in the Sci-fi/fantasy section generally. I'm currently reading an Isobelle Carmody book - she's an Australian author that I was introduced to last year and I've become a big fan.

I think the other book that went with Tara Road was Quentins.
I belong to a book club so I have been reading some books that I would not have chosen myself...this coming month is The Shadow of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz (?? will check on the author's name)...it was a surprisingly good romance/mystery the kept me interested right up to the end.
However, if there is one book I could read until it fell apart (and I'm close!) it would be The Women's Room by Marylin French...I wouldn't necessarily define myself as a feminist but that is the underlying theme in her books.
I love novels that were written in the 70's...can't explain it...
Bargains are important for me when book-buying...why pay $8 (or more!) when you can get the same story for $0.50 at a yard sale. For my book club, most of the books we choose are fairly recent so used isnt' always and option, but I've found most on Amazon for under $1.00, even with $3.00 shipping they are less than the bookstores. Some of the women in my club use the library, but I like to keep my books. We recently moved into a new home and my husband has promised to build me library shelves for my collection.
Signing off for the night...must sleep. Good night all!

I love Janet Evanovich and James Paterson. Have you ever listened to the Janet Evanovich books on CD? They are wonderful and the lady that reads them does different voices for the characters. She's very good. I have a 15 year old daughter and I read a lot of the books she reads. They are kind of fluff, but then I get to see what she is reading and we discuss. It works for us. Also the Twilight series - very good! Meg Cabot is good also.

(btw...I may finally hit 1,000 posts this week!...not as good as 5,000, but I'm working on it)
Its Muh-Mah ... a cross between the British mum and the American mama :)
Well that is its real name!!!!;)
We get the british editions downunder and personally I don't understand why they need to change things for the US market.
Because they probably think us Americans are too ignorant to get the historical reference of the philosopher stone.
This annoys me when they do that.
I have recently watched "Doogal" and was actually upset to find out that not only did they change the script to include American words instead of British words but they re-made it with American Actors instead of British Actors. What on earth is all that about??

I didn't like James Patterson's Letters books as much as the others, but they're ok. Have you noticed that all his books have co-writers now? I wonder if he's losing his touch or what? Or maybe it's just easier to let someone else write it and collect the money :)
I LOVE Janet Evanovich! Stephanie Plum cracks me up! I've only read a few of them, though. I want to start from the beginning and read them all. An author you should try if you haven't is Harlan Coban. I read one of his books at my mom's and it was so good. It was called "The Woods." Apparently, he also has a series of books that I haven't read yet.

Books- I also love reading. I mainly read suspense/crime/who-dunnit type books. I am reading Karen Rose...she is quite good. I can usually pick the suspect...but with the last one I read, I was totally wrong. So I like that. Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs even Dean Koontz and Steven King. I even have read some Andy Mcnab. Look I will try heaps...but I have to draw the line at romance. Just can't get into those books.
I read Oprah's book club book- Edgar Sawtelle. I am in two minds whether I liked that. Hated the ending.

about budgeting, I have never been able to do it I can do other peoples' accounts and know all the theory behind how things -should- work - but I am very impulsive and I tend to live for today when it comes to money, mostly I remember everything I need to, but I think sometimes when I really want something, my subconscious makes me 'forget'
Thinking about Robin's household and time management makes my poor wittle brain want to explode :) You really make me want to burst into the Alica Keys Super Woman chorus!

Hi! I just stumbled over this thread now and thought I might fit in here. Especially as the "girls" at Sunday Scrappers Chat keep making fun of me because I'm "so young".
Well I'm 31 years old - SEE, not that young, although I do remember being 16. I've been married for a bit more than 3 years, which sometimes still feels strange (ME, married?) and I don't have kids yet. I'm working full time as a management assistant for a smallish company.
A lot of the things in this thread really sound familiar. I love books (fantasy, crime novels, ... I've never read a biography or someting like that). Currently I'm reading "Shadowmarch" by Tad Williams.
And I'm good at doing my finances. I DO have a finance plan in Excel, which I need because we're really saving to buy our first own flat by the end of this year.

I have the same issue with my daughters...the older one is named Elizabeth so of course EVERYTHING comes with her name on it (it's been one of the most popular names for 100 years), however the baby is names Alaina...not so much selection there. Try finding something personalized with "Tate" on it. I dare ya ;)
Yesterday we went to see Inkheart. It was really good, actually. Not Harry Potter of course, lol, but a fun fantasy flick. I have the Inkheart book, but never got to reading it cuz I have NO idea where it went. I will still read it, if I find it. I want to check out Inkspell too.
We had one of our days out, Tate and I (DH was working). Movies, lunch out, Petsmart, and then Ice Cream shop. We had to go to the big theater 45 mins away (and much more $$$ than our po-dunk "local" theater- which is still 25 mins away. lol), which he LOVES. i don't b/c as I said $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I am a 30-something, married with a 4-year old and a full time career. I typically only scrap on weekends and those evenings when DS gets to bed on time and DH is preoccupied with tv or other projects.
Scrapping competes with family, work, photography, and reading ... not to mention housework, friends, exercise ... you get the picture :)

Ah yes books! I could go on for hours as I am a complete book-a-holic :D. Always have been but it got worse when the TV went 12 years ago. I will read anything but i do have my favs and my very own book shelf where my husband is not allowed to put any of his really rubbish thrillers :annoyed:(not the good ones they are allowed but definitely not the ones I call comics and can read 3 a day!). All our books are second hand as the price of books here is huge. Mostly from car boot sales and a shop called DAPP which is a charity shop and I may well be reading your cast offs! I also love the sci-fi (less the girly novels) and Nicole and the zeroes got me mugging my pupils for the Twiglight series.
I actually found a couple of hours to scrap today which is the first time this year which is madness :yippee:! I need to complete the Odds and Ends Challenge - I always do that one as I can only use freebies so I like to support such a great idea and express my heartfelt gratitude to the designers (Thank-you designers):applause:. I also did a scraplift for the spotlight but haven't posted it yet as I must have used one piece from almost every kit I have so the credits will probably take as long as the LO did .
Definitely need both time and financial management help. I am sorted at work - the school bell is a wonderful thing - but so easily distracted at home... where was I again??
Fun thread - hope I keep up with it...
Oh yes Jemma with a "J" also impossible when I was young but more common now. A "G" was more usual. Son's name is Jack - nice and simple.

OK, I'm jumping in here, but with a big caveat .... I am NOT good at these chatting threads! I so want to be, but somehow I just don't keep up well.
I'm married to the most awesome man, who makes me laugh every day. We have a daughter, Delaney, who is the sweetest little girl. I seriously don't know how life was complete without her!
My husband and I both grew up in Chicago, spent 6 years in Detroit, 6 months in Indianapolis, and moved to Des Moines, Iowa 6 years ago. We love it here! Other than the cold at the moment.
I work for a large software company, and am lucky to have my office at home. This provides some challenges, but for the most part it is the best!
Like a few other mom's here, I'll be 40 years old with a 4 year old. Delaney turns 4 in a week, and I turn the big 4-0 later this year.
And my latest thing that I am having so much fun with is an iPod Touch (Christmas present). I finally got it out of the box yesterday, and worked on getting it synced up with my music and video libraries, surfing the web via our home wi-fi network from the couch, and visiting the app store. I bought tetris, and it is pretty cool, and added an app that syncs with our photo sharing site (Phanfare, where I also put scraps) ... the coolest thing since sliced bread!!
And on the name thing, I have never found anything with Delaney on it! But we were going for different when we named her.

I'm excited to try to get some stuff done now. But there are a couple of high school kids sitting in MY seat! The nerve!
I'll admit I fall short on the chatting threads too, so none of us will be mad if we just skim the last few posts and start commenting! LOL!
Wow guyīs Iīm no way able to keep up with you chatty group LOL way to fast for me. Good luck to each and everyone of you.

If anyone's around there's a chat on just now. Just fun and harmless, free 2 week challenges :)
I live in the grannie thread, but when I saw your post about the ipod touch, I just had to add a comment. I have an ipod touch because I bought one for my son, Andrew, for Christmas 2007. I hid it so he would not find it, and on Christmas Eve my DH and I hunted and hunted, but we could not find it. We finally went out to Target and bought another one. When I finally found the original one in APRIL 2008, Target would not take it back. So I became the proud owner of an ipod touch. And I LOVE IT. Don't know what I ever did without it.
And at one point in time I was a 40 year old with a 1 year old. (and a 16 year old, and a 13 year old, and a 10 year old, and a 3 year old). Makes me tired just to think about it.

The iPod Touch is more fun than I ever imagined! And, I kid you not, the 3 (almost 4) year old figured out in less than 5 minutes which buttons to push to get to videos, and loves turning it to see things flip around on the screen!
Do you have favorite apps on it?
The concept that the slim little device has more power than probably my first two computers ever put together is kind of amazing. But now I am dating myself.
I don't have any sort of touch iPod (phone or not), but I know people who do and there are so many cool apps. There are really silly things like a lighter (so you can hold it up at a concert!), a dice roller, etc. and useful things like the temperature (which you can get for all over the world...so we put where all our friends live and then compare who wins with hottest or coldest)...and a bunch of ones that are actually cool but escape me now! Oh, my brother has one that makes it sound like your iPod touch is ringing (whether it is a phone or not!). We've had fun with that one. Pretty soon I bet you'll be scrolling through pages of apps on your iPod! :)

I am shocking at keeping up with these threads myself. Often, I just ramble along to myself I am sure. Call it therapy. Oh and another way to not be doing what I should be...you know, cleaning, putting the washing out, feeding the kids...(that last one was a joke!!)
I really have to get my act together and get scrapping. I hate to say it....but I just can not get myself into it. HELP. I want out of this rut. I am doing the odd n ends, so at least I am trying. And that is what I will go do now..my last LO for the month. I will be back with a preview....(I hope)

Can I just say that I am TOTALLY jealous of your "alone time"...the closest I got to that today was taking my 3-year old to the movies. We saw BOLT...it was cute, but there were a number of parts that scared her to tears. However, the other 5 kids we went with seemed fine throughout. In any case...she sat still for almost 2 hours and as long as I kept her bowl full of popcorn and Twizzlers it was almost like quiet-time for me.

I don't know about slower pace, because in the two days this thread had been up you have 11 pages. I guess it's slightly slower than the GT. Anyway I'm popping in, as a 40 year old with 5 year old and 2 year old boys. I guess I have two threads now to keep track of and rarely post in.

I agree with the slower pace?!?! I'll see if I can keep up with the thread, but with my 4 kids it could be difficult! I am a 33 year old stay at home mom! 10 year old girl, who just asked when she could wear make-up. YIKES! 8 year old girl, 4 year old boy and 7 month old boy. With kids and normal life I'm pretty busy and wish I had more time to scrap and read and do fun things, rather than clean and cook. But that comes with the territory I guess.

I can't wait for the boys to start back at school next week, so that amybe I'll get some quiet time. I so understand the sentiment behind not doing the hopusework because there is always someone 2 steps behind you undoing all your work.
Books, I love reading Maeve Binchy, Phillipa Gregory & Sophie Kinsella. I do read other authors as well, I've just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. That was an interesting book one that makes me think how good my life really is.

I need to rant for a minute...
So...I belong to a book club (as mentioned previously) and we only meet once a month... How hard should it be for me to get to this meeting?
I have not been able to go since last May!!! I read the books and then there is some mis-alignment in the universe.
In September, my babysitter double-booked and I was left with no one (my husband had a work-related meeting that night)
In October, I was sick and couldn't make it.
In November, DH hit a deer on his way to a meeting and I had to get him (at least I had a babysitter on her way over to to watch the kids anyway while I did that)
In December, not enough people read the book so the meeting was cancelled.
And now, the January meeting is this evening...I've read the book, the babysitter is lined up and guess what!!!! My husband's car won't start (probably because it is sub-zero..) AAA is coming to look at it, but it they can't make the car start, I'm stuck home again tonight. DH has a work-related meeting tonight so he won't be home with my car.
Keep your fingers crossed...this is my "night-out" each month and I REALLY need it right now.

There's no such thing as a redundant comment. Everyone loves to know somebody has looked at their LO and liked it.
On average I'd say less than 10% of people that view my LOs leave a comment. Sometimes I wonder why, didn't they like it? Couldn't they think of ANYTHING nice to say? I know that lots of people are too shy or think their opinions don't matter or are too scared to comment - I was at first - but everyone loves a sincere comment.

I agree. I have LO's that have no comments at all. I am happy with them, but sometimes I wonder are they so awful that people can't think of anything to write? BUT there are so many LO's uploaded that they are easily missed..and with the time zone difference, half the time I upload it is the middle of the night for the US.

Well, I feel I must admit, in my shame, that I am a LOUSY HORRIBLE commenter. I rarely peruse the gallery. I usually come through the door at the forums and leave out through the New Products area. Yes, bad, I know. I am one of these who feels like my comments are redundant. There was a time I thought how nice it would be to have a rubber stamp made with "It's Gorgeous!" on it, but that would been so ditzy of me! (My hubby LOVES to tell the joke of the blonde who tried to correct her mistakes on her computer with White Out and says that I would do something like that!)
Yep, I feel guilty, because when I post a new LO, I get lovely comments. So from here on out, I will commit, at least, 15 minutes a day (baby steps) to commenting on others. Everyone loves a comment. :)

I got dumped yesterday so I am feeling a little sorry for myself, I feel like I am running out of time for love (and babies) and that I am doing something seriously wrong, because I don't seem to be getting lucky in love.
But watch this space, I will probably be excited about some new person soon and there will be optimism :)
When I like a layout and go to comment, if I read the previous comments I sometimes end up not commenting, because someone has said something I have or because I feel it would just be repetitive, but I do still comment (mostly)

I did make it to bookclub on Monday...the book did not warrant much discussion, but it was fun getting out, having snacks and chatting with the girls.
Today I am stuck at home..it has been snowing steadily since last night - about 12 inches expected...and it's too cold even to bring the kids out the play. We have LOTS of snow anyway from prior storms but it hasn't been sticky enough to make snowmen. I got really frustrated a few days ago trying to find mittens and a sled for my daughter and all I could find was bathing suits and sandals. Apparently the retailers don't realize we have 3 months of winter left.

I often feel like the junior here at DSP but at work I feel ooooolllldddd. I work at a store and if we look apart from the managers the average employee is perhaps 20 - 21. I feel old every time I get a new job application from someone born in the early 90s and I feel like laughing and telling people they are too young for a loan when they come to apply for one and they are born in 90/91.
Gorgeous kit Tina ..... this one is so cute.

wow, just to give you my two cents worth, Linda, you had the most fabulous idea and I congratulate you. It's something I have been wondering about for a long time because even though I love some of the people in the GT, it is impossible to keep up with it.
Lol, Now I am A GRANDMOTHER, BUT can you think if any idea for another thread for older people who find the GT too busy? anyone over 50????? Lol, I got to think. I am so glad and maybe now the GT will be less busy?
Fabulous idea and of course I will not join here. I am too old and also I am a FF. And will remain FF. Hugs to all, great thread.
I need some help ......
DD scratched her cornea yesterday and we were given some eye drops to put in ..... how do you put them in when she is screaming and crying her eyes out at the slightest glimpse of a the eye drop bottle?? I have tried to put them in but every time I manage to do it she cries so much that it just washes the med out. Its so traumatic for her and me. Has anyone had any experience ... nothing I say any more will convince her its a good thing. The eye drops do not hurt her, she even admits that when she has not cried [the very 1st time it went in] it made her eye feel better. She can not come up with any reason why she shouldn't get them. Yet its complete hysterics when it comes time to put them in and I have to do this 4 times a day. ~Sigh~ ... very frustrated. I dont even think I would be able to get near her with ointment.
Off my soap box and willing to accept any help LOL

Q- sorry babe. :(. But I agree with averyone, in that the right one comes along when you least expect it. So get out there and enjoy yourself...(you just never know who is watching and waiting for a spunky chicky to come along???)
Snow- gee it is hard to fathom that you guys are in winter when it is so hot here. And the shops do that here as well. It was a freezing day at the end of last winter and I wanted to buy Ash a jumper (as of per usual, she had forgotten hers), well all the racks were filled with summer gear. So she had to have a spare one of mine(poor thing had the sleeves rolled up so far that she could hardly bend her arm...lol)
Muma- how often do you have to put the drops in? We had to give Ash drops in her eye. I am surprised you guys in the states couldn't hear her. Well, the Dr said that to try when she was asleep. You can tilt their head easily, drop the drop onto the side of the eye and then let it fall in. Luckily she only needed them once a day.

First, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter...
I have had some experience with eyedrops - my daughter had a nasty case of conjuctivitis when she was 2 and she rebels agains ALL meds. I found that it was easier if she laid down on her back with her eyes closed - then put the drops on the inside corner of her eyes - she then needed to open and close a couple of times for the drops to go in...the Dr. recommended this method to me, but we did have to use 2x as many drops (2 instead of 1 for each administration) as there is some waste in the process. Good luck.
Tina....I really like the new kit...you did a great job with those colors and the inspiration offered for it. I was lurking around that challenge, but have not been feeling creative enough lately to offer any input.
Must get some sleep...I have early morning (7 am !!!!!) PT appts for the next few months and getting up at the crack of dawn and not being allowed to hang around in my pj's is killing me.
Will check in again tomorrow. Good Night!

MUMA - I agree with Krys - do it while she's asleep. I started out having to do my dd's that way. She has severe astigmatism and we did drops to try and correct some of it. After a few nights, she finally let me put them in. She would lay on the bed and look at a star sticker that I put on the ceiling. Then I would drop it in the corner of her eye and let it roll in. It's hard for them to get over the fear of something coming toward their eye. It helped my dd to have something to focus on. Hope she's as sound a sleeper as mine was. I think I could have put a gallon of drops in her eye and she would never wake up. LOL!
I'm going to jump in this thread. I saw it the other day but have been too swamped at work to make comments. I too, can't keep up with the grannies. Lets, see - I'm forty something. Been married almost 25 years (Yep, he robbed the cradle!) Have a 12 year old daughter and a 30 something year old step-daughter who has blessed us with two grandsons and a granddaughter is on the way. So, technically I'm a granny, but hopefully, you'll let me hang out here!
Q---hang loose and have fun! Mr. Right will be right along before you know it.

LINDA, Thank you so much. Thank you for inviting me but lol, no, I am too old. I just came across this thread and was blown off my feet....it's the best idea anyone has had in a very long time. It might also take some pressure off the GT though not sure...I have often wondered what some people were doing in there, lol....like Nachtstern. Then again, you post your layouts there and get lots of comments.....
anyway, I absolutely applaud you for thinking of this. It's fabulous and perfect for you guys, lol, girls....
to be honest, I am GREEN WITH ENVY.......Have already suggested something for the Feeding thread, but so far no response. We need another thread for us older people, just can't think of anything right now. For people over 50.....
ughhhhhh, I am sooooo jealous.
Enjoy everyone. Great idea. ughhhhhhh.
Oh Sabina ... please come join in ... its more of a chat between friends that isn;t as fast as the grannie thread .... you are so welcome and there really isn't an age limit.
Thank you all so much for the advice .... I have to give the drops 4 times a day so might be able to do the morning and night dose while she is asleep .... she actually sleeps with her eyes slightly open [exactly like her grandma which freaks DH out LOL] ... getting her to lay down and look at something might do the trick ... if she still refuses I'll drop it on the corner when she has her eyes closed and get her to blink. Thank you all again, I was sooooo frustrated but you have made me smile again with some hope. The eye isn't infected but they want to give antibiotic drops for prophylaxes.

Easiest way to put eyedrops in anyone is to tell them to look right up to the ceiling, pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch and drop it in there. They don't see the bottle and they don't get a horrible splash as the drop lands on the eyeball.
Just throw them in. :D Most people are too tentative about the whole process which makes it worse.
If you drop it on her lashes or wherever she will get some as soon as she blinks. The eye actually can't hold an entire drop anyway so we waste most of it regardless and putting in two drops less than 5 minutes apart serves no purpose either as one washes the other out.
The unfortunate thing is I've never met an eyedrop that didn't sting - so there's not much incentive for the poor kid to come back for the next dose.

Hey ladies, we lost power about 745. We have a large generator, so we have heat, can cook on the stove top, some lights + a tv. So we r doing ok, but still a pain + most ppl we know have no gen. Sigh. My bonuses will probably be late!!

I hope you get your power back soon, Tina. We got mostly snow here, less than a quarter-inch of ice, but shoveling the driveway took FOREVER! School was canceled, so I had a day off, but I feel like I spent most of it shoveling. No school tomorrow either - the roads must still be pretty bad.

Excellent advice there .... its really funny [well it is now since I have chilled out a little] but I used to work in the local ophthalmic hospital pharmacy when I was in the UK and I gave out all this advice ...... but with my own DD that advice just went out the window as she wont even come near me to get the drops in let alone pull her eye lid down. But the advice about keeping each drop at least 5 mins apart is so true, you will wash out the 1st drop because it takes the eye at least that long to absorb the 1st drop.
I hope you get your power back soon Tina ..... what a pain that must be.

Tina, sorry about the power and dsl - hope all gets back up and working quickly. My bro. lives in western KY and he is out of power too. Doesn't sound like he'll have any for another day at least. TN sent crews into KY last night to help restore power.
Saving money by not having powers sounds good in theory but probably not in practice! LOL! Our bill was ginormous this month and I immediately cut down the thermostat two degrees and told DH and DD to either put on a sweatshirt or go to bed! I didn't want to hear any complaints!

Not having power does NOT save money! Trust me! This summer when hurricane Ike came through Ohio (yes, Ohio, for real) I was without power for 8 days. Yikes! My electric bill was $12.00 less than the month before but the gas to run a small generator for a couple hours a day plus 7 bags of ice per day for coolers and eating out for 8 days cost us a fortune.
Hope it comes back on soooon Tina!
