I'm about to book the crop but undecided on the hotel as I live about an hour away. I see it is scheduled until 10pm, is that correct, it will go on into the evening? or do you think we might organise a group dinner?

Anyone else making it into a fun family holiday around the crop? My youngest (18) is going to explore the theme parks. He had a blast in Dubai at the big Wet n Wild park there. I am hoping to have some special bonding time again with him like we had on our last holiday together to Italy and Dubai.

Will it be warm enough for wet and wild? I thought May was your autumn and would be on the cooler side?
Booked my spot, still considering hotel...

I read up on it, and they heat it from April. It's not my scene, but then, I'm not just turned 18! And he can always go to Movie World instead.

A lot of tourists do enjoy the water based theme parks in Autumn and even winter, in May you'd be looking at temperatures ranging from a low of 15 to a high of around 25c so would depend probably on where you have come from and what you are used to.

Wet & Wild doesn't sound like this grammy's thing without my little ones around.....LOL.. I was just questioning the weather.. It is around 15 c here today and I am in long sleeves, pants and shoes. If I headed outside I would be wearing a light jacket so don't think you will be seeing me with togs and sunnies even with heated water..

Just to clarify the 15 is the average overnight low in May - so about 2 in the morning - not prime time for swimmers. You'd definitely want to pack a some long sleeves but you'll also want something that you are comfortable in at the warmer end of the range.

Hey Meredith. :)
I called to book our room and they wouldn't accept the DSP booking (we are getting a really good rate) over the phone. You have to use the PDF form with the DSP name on it. You can print it, then fax it to them. I don't have a fax so they asked me to print it, fill it in and sign it, then scan it and email it to them at:
res@watermarkhotelgc.com.au
The form is here:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36399
- underneath the Laptop Crop t-shirt ad. That's how I booked.

Thanks for the info about phone booking. I now have the paperwork and I will fax it off to-morrow. Is anyone looking to share a bed and breakfast room?
I wouldn't mind sharing with someone, but my husband says I snore sometimes, so it had better be someone with a hearing problem.

Ha ha that is funny so do I - even though I cant hear myself:lol::lol::lol::lol:
I was even looking up remedies for snoring today so my unfortunate room mate wont have to be wearing ear muffs!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:
It's possible that two snorers would be OK together - if your own snoring doesn't wake you, perhaps someone else's wouldn't either!
I'm happy to share - I'll be there Thursday to Monday - 4 nights, so if anyone is serious about sharing, pm me so I can book for us. It doesn't have to be for all four nights, although that would be best for me, obviously. :)

Would the pools be heated? I don't think I've been in a pool for about five years. I am going to see if one of the boys has a pair of board shorts that will fit me. They might be bigger than me.

Not sure how many are registered through the store, but there are about 35 I think who have said they are coming so far.

Great to hear they are heated. I saw there were two - I'm sure Alessandro will be in the pools a lot. I have had a ball with Google street view, and looking to see where Maccers is... Stop laughing at me, I like Maccers. Especially their pancakes. Maccers is .7 of a K away, it's about 5 blocks and it's next to a Hungry J's.

It's so embarassing being the 'loud' snorer in the house! My DH used to snore but it was always so gentle and actually helped me get to sleep! Doesn't snore much now - just snorts loudly on occassion!

Oh and they arent that stretchy so they arent " fitting" - - I would say a medium would be a 12 - 14 and a large would bge 14 - 16 - xl would be 18 ( I originally ordered one of those but it was quite loose and because they arent fitting it wasnt very flattering!!)
Erica

Ingredients (serves 4)
* 185ml (3/4 cup) brandy
* 185ml (3/4 cup) dark creme de cacao
* 185ml (3/4 cup) thin cream
* 1 cup crushed ice

Lauren chose the venue - I'm pretty sure we can rely on her to ensure the coffee, and other beverages of choice are good ... and nearby
Well Ive never BEEN there to taste test - I may feel the wrath of all the Aussies here when I say that Ive never really had a decent coffee in my ( several) trips to the Gold Coast - Ive had decent coffee in Sydney and Melbourne tho - mind you even what Ive had in the Gold Coast is certainly better than the coffee Ive had on my many trips to the US!!!

What does one do at a crop?
When I worked in Surfers back in 2000, the Watermark was a daily lunch spot for the locals and the buffet very good value. I don't recall the coffee being bad.

What does one do at a crop?
I asked the same question as I have never been to one either. The answer I received was ................ eat chocolate, talk, eat chocolate, drink coffee, eat chocolate, make new friends, eat chocolate, take photos, eat chocolate ............. Do you get the idea? And if you have time maybe do a little bit of scrapping.
Sounds like a fun place to be!!!
Lauren
02-04-2009, 05:22 PM
Yes thats pretty much it - its an excuse for a get together of like minded digital scrapbookers - and there is NOTHING better than meeting up with people who share your passion I can tell you from experience.
Each crop runs differently according to what the people attending want. - We keep things very informal, but we do usually have some short lessons during the day for those who want to watch . We have experts on hand to help people out individually too - I am rarely sitting at my laptop - I like to circulate and see what everyone else is doing. We love it when people bring their albums with them too so we can all ooh and ahh over each others layouts.
Basically we do a lot of laughing and a lot of talking and often quite a bit of eating chocolate!!- The 2 down under crops are catered so we will also do a bit of eating other food

It's all so exciting and I'm seriously contemplating coming along. I'm just wondering what happens if my laptop doesn't have my scrapping program on it? I do my scrapping at work where I have CS3 (installed b the company - I dont actually have the program myself).
As much as I'd love to come along and just meet like-minded people, with a limited budget I'd like to think I'd get more out of than just a great break. Will there be any mini-tutorials or informal talks I could attend? Lauren, I know you said there would probably be such things, but I'm just wanting to double check before I commit the credit card to another bashing.
Lauren

They are both going on the Thursday night red eye to Brisbane. I have not booked a flight yet as we are trying to sell our house and move back to Melbourne, so don't know whether I will be coming from Perth or Melbourne. I am giving it another week and will then book. Probably just be there Fri and Sat nights.

I have started one, tho not really for the crop, dh convinced me to start because he is worried about my health. He choofed me off to Toni Ferguson which I am not very happy about, I really don't believe in that kind of dieting as I think you just put it all back on when you stop. I would rather just watch portions, eat healthy and exercise.
Of course I have no idea how well I am doing (although I must admit I am cheating a little) because I keep having flare up's of my mystery autoimmune disease which makes me retain TONS of fluid. Gawd I hope that is under control before the crop!!! I don't really feel like looking like a blowfish while I am there.

How about we all come along Healthy and Happy. I had a phone call from a girlfriend 3 years ago and she said to me "don't every worry about your weight again, because from where I am now it really dosn't matter". She died 2 months later at the age of 51. It is a good lesson to learn. We are all "normal" what ever that is.

wonder what sights we will see???
Two chimps and a Blonde
A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from the Gold Coast when she
was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down.
The man walked up to the car and asked, 'Are you going to the Gold Coast?'
'Sure,' answered the blonde, 'do you need a lift ?'
'Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck! My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the Gold Coast Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me ? I' ll give you $100 for your
trouble..'
'I'd be happy to,' said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went.
Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of the Gold Coast when suddenly he was horrified!!
There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd.
With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde.
'What the heck are you doing here ?' he demanded, 'I gave you $100 to take
these chimpanzees to the zoo.'
'Yes, I know you did,' said the blonde,' but we had money left over
so now we're going to SeaWorld!

Well I put my camera in to have the sensor cleaned today so that I would have a nice clean camera for all the photos we will be taking. EEEEEK - $170 is the estimate for a sensor clean - WTH??????????- still i tried blowing the spots off and they wouldnt come - they must be spots of damp or something...........
Vallie

Yikes, that is a lot. I notice some dots on my photos too. I dont know where they are coming from, somewhere inside. That is a lot of money, wonder if it can be done at home with a bit of googling?

well i tried a blower - didnt work - I think if you get them early on then it might work - but maybe mine got cooked on - theyve been there a while now
There is a liquid sensor cleaning kit you can buy but it sounds scary to do - and it was ovwer $100 so I decided to bite the bullet and get it done properly

I just looked that up - it costs $76 here for dust aid - I think if i was going to clean my sensor regularly I would get it - I just got a call and my camera is ready and it was $158.30 - at least they were fast!!

Ouch.. Definitely pricey in NZ but it can be used many times over as there are 12 foam tapes in a can. I bought mine with my first SLR as it came with bits already present. I could have shipped it back to Canon but opted to try the dust aid instead. My DD has it now and we've cleaned it once more and all went well. Haven't had to use it on my newer camera but I won't hesitate to if it needs it.

I asked for help with this over in the granny thread and didn't get much so I am coming here with hopes.
I am trying to figure out an inexpensive way of having a global cell phone while in OZ and NZ. A friend of mine has two unlocked (global) phones she is loaning us. Her Mom lives in OZ and is sending us 2 Sim cards from Vodafone. She also sent us the link to Vodafone website to activate the cards. She says we will have to charge the phones with minute via a recharging station once we get to OZ... Ok this is so foreign to anything I know... Are these station common and easily found? When I look at the website I can't find anything that tells me and everything I read mentions contracts.. I just want a week of use and some minutes to call home and be available for mine to call me. Any input here would be so great... We are leaving behind our 12 year old for this trip and really want the peace of mind a cell phone offers...

I dont know about vodaphone in aussie but i do in nz and you can buy credit for your perpaid cellphone just about everywhere - corner store, supermarket, etc etc electronics stores etc - you should be fine doing that - the cost per minute is more expensive ( and will be a shock to you in the USA) but I used prepay cellphones for years and years . Even if you didnt have the phones you can buy relativley cheap prepay phones here . In the end thats what i did in the US - just bought a prepay phone and topped it up with credit as I needed it.- It was cheaper than having my own phone roaming and paying via my provider.

02-19-2009, 01:05 PM
Oh - one thing Im not sure about is if a vodaphone sim card from australia will work in New Zealand - you may need to buy a new sim card when you get here. ( from memory they are about $30 ) I am not with the vodaphone network so not sure on that one but I can find out for you if you want.

I am pretty sure you are right about the sim card Lauren. Would need a new one for NZ. I guess I am not very prepaid savy and am still totally clueless as to how it all works. When I check out the website I find the info on prepay but it still says there is a 12 month contract involved... I know I have to be missing something... Grrrrrrrr this is very frustrating.

Sounds like a fun plan Margie :lol::lol:.
Ok I found info on another
http://www.telestial.com/sim_regional.php?ID=AU
It's suppose to be for travelers and says with the Passport sim I can use it in both Australia and New Zealand. No contract and it can be recharged.
Anyone ever used it or heard of it?
Lauren
02-19-2009, 08:04 PM
Basically there are only 2 options for cell phone providers in NZ - Telecom and Vodaphone - Telecom dont use sim card so thats out ( thats what I use but my kids are all on the vodaphone network ) - and looking at that website that telestial company uses vodaphone sim cards - and there is no contract on a prepaid phone here with vodaphone so no worries there.
One thing thats different here is that you dont pay for incoming calls - so if you have a plan on your home phone in the US that allows cheap international calling thats definitely the best option - to have them call you - that way it costs you nothing on your cellphone.
The vodaphone website in NZ is nortoriously horrific in its complexity but Im looking now to see what you need to do both countries.
Hnmm after reading Im no wiser - It looks like the same sim card will work in both countries but you will pay roaming charges in the other country so I think the best option is to buy a sim card here when you arrive in NZ -
Or here is your other alternative
http://www.vodarent.co.nz/
There is also a link to an equivalent australian website there on that page - and they are right at the airport so you can pick it up there and drop it off - and book it so that you know the number in advance
Alternatively if you have the phone and just want to swap the sim card - there is a vodaphone stockist in a small shopping centre just as you leave the airport .
I have a friend who works for them so Im going to give him a call and get some advice for you

Ok a bit more research - buying a sim card costs $35
http://www.vodafone.co.nz/shop/planPrepay.jsp?plantype=mobile&billingMethod=prepay&menuKey=mnit100011 - this shows you the costs per call etc.

We have our own phone (global ready), so ideal would be to buy or rent prepaid sim cards in each country. I like that we can get them at the airport. Don't want to go chasing around for them.
Another question. My friends Mom is sending us an ACE calling card from Australia. She suggests we use it to call home so we can talk cheeply. I am not familiar with these ether. Will I be able to use it in New Zealand as well?

Kim I always use phone cards they are so cheap and easy to use and you can use them from any hotel or public phone so for example I would buy a $10 one and then use it to call Donn in America would cost me like half a cent a minute. Then when i was in America I would buy a phone card there to call my family here in Aust. Just do a google search on phone cards. I used one called GPS you can buy them from any newsagency or even from the airports. When I went to Indonesia 2 yrs ago Donn bought one online that he could call me from Texas for like 7 cents a min I just gave him the hotel phone number.

Of course I have no idea how well I am doing (although I must admit I am cheating a little) because I keep having flare up's of my mystery autoimmune disease which makes me retain TONS of fluid. Hi all you Aussie and Kiwi gals…. So our passports came, all our flights are booked, hotels too. Paid for my crop spots. Have the whole trip planned out even bought maps and this sweet rolling laptop carry on that has 2 sides to it. One side for your lappie and the other for some over night essentials. My laptop weighs a ton and the just the thought of lugging it over my should in and out of airports, hotels and crops was making me hurt… Have the cell phone thing all figured out ( I think ) and bought the needed electrical adapters ( I hope) … Feeling much better about DH having to drive on the other side from the other side of the car, thanks to all the positive feed back on that subject…. I should be nothing but excited right??? Well mostly I am but I also keep getting these little niggles of panic and fear and “What the heck are you doing traveling half way around the world” and will I feel like the odd man out at the crops amongst all the Aussies and Kiwis being the only “Foreign Granny“… DH and I have never done this kind of thing… Maybe that’s all it is… First time jitter….. Oh I wince every time I think of what this is costing us…Even though we got some awesome rates on everything, which is the main reason we could even think about doing something like this…. Oh and the guilt of leaving our 12 year old behind for 3 weeks.. Acccckkkkk! Well I guess you all are getting the picture here… Some times coming here and reading through the post help get rid of my crappy little niggles but today they just keep niggling...I have a huge knot in my neck and am close to tears on and off and need you all to tell me I am going to have a blast and love Australia and Australians and New Zealand and New Zealanders and that I am just being a big old granny baby . Tell us a bit about your schedule apart from the crops - where else are you planning on going ??

Kim :hug:, most of us Aussies dont bite:D. I understand your anxiety though, especially re the crop. I am always nervous when meeting new people, not good in a crowd, quiet and shy out of my comfort zone etc etc., and I have no laptop, and even if I did, there's no way I could produce a LO in a day anyway, especially with people watching me...so I have lots of anxieties too:). You WILL have a blast and there is absolutely nothing to worry about. ;-)
You are going to have an AWESOME TIME!
Sorry I was no help with the mobile thing.. I know nothing about them since I haven't travelled overseas since I was 18yrs old! How sad is that!!
The way our car is going however, I may be hiring one to get to the crop!! LOL
It is getting water in the engine and our mechanic has done a stop gap measure as we don't want to spend the fortune it is going to cost to fix it. Probably the head gasket. We have decided to try and keep it running without spending the big bucks, till we sell the house in hopefully May.. and then buy a new car.. but it will be unlikely that happens before the crop. Mind you I did a highway drive yesterday and it seemed to cope ok.. so fingers crossed.

Well you will have a great time - sounds like a nice trip and not too rushed - All of those places you are visiting in NZ are within 5 hours drive - - The Bay of Islands are 3 hours north of Auckland , Rotorua is about 2 .5 - 3 hours south east of Auckland - Rotorua and Taupo are an hour apart and Waitomo is another hour away to the west .-
I hope the weather behaves for you - one thing about NZ is that it does tend to rain a lot!!- but usually not for very long - so if you wait an hour the weather usually will change....Thats especially true of Auckland!!
I can give you a list of my personal must sees in all those areas as we have visited many many times. Just holler if you want me to let you know.
:lol::lol: Thanks Lauren... If you were here or I was there I would give you a hug that would probally squeeze the breathe right out of you...Just what I needed to hear.. Going to print it out and slap it on my fridge..And as far as what are trip plans are like well after our 4 days at the Gold Coast and with all of you we are flying up to Cairns. Jenny (Dagwood) very kindly gave me some very helpful info on where to stay and what to see while we are there so will be staying in the Trinity Beach area and heading out to the Reefs one day, the Daintree Rainforest the next, and the Kurranda the last as well wiggling our toes in some fine Australian sand... Then it's off to New Zealand for another 10 days. Auckland crop, Auckland adventure, Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Taupo, Waitomo, and then a nice visit with Pam in the Gulf Harbor are before we fly home...
DGD yelling for me to come wipe her bottom :lol::lol: so need to run... Seems like I have said this before :D... Thank you , thank you, thank you Lauren...

we should really get together and chat about our side trips! we're headed to cairns after the crop as well. and of course new zealand and a bunch of places that i don't even know yet!
i have this anti-anxiety gene i think, when i get overwhelmed, my nerves just calm and my heartrate slows to the point where people wonder if i'm alive. better than being stressed and worried i guess, but it doesn't encourage me to plan ahead very well! :D
Must be nice.. Me I have to have it all planned out and double checked... I usually relaxs though onces it all set but this time not so much... But then like I said, this is a whole new kind of adventure... I think too it all started off on such a high note and then the fires and floods kind of took things in a different direction...
Let me know if you want any of the info I have gathered as far as Cairns goes.... Jenny, as well as some of the others here, were really, really helpful with it all.

It will all be OK!! We will have a grand time...You will love Australia and Australians and New Zealand and New Zealanders and stop being a big Granny baby:D:D
:lol::lol: Good to know about the biting thing Jill... I only have to stay out of your oceans then :D.... I was really nervous before the Anahiem Crop 2 years ago but turned out it was a big waste of my time to be as I had the most wonderful time with everyone.... Even if I was one of the quieter ones I reallly enjoyed laughing along with all who were not..And everyone was very friendly. I am sure this time will be as much fun.. And remember I would be happy to let you play on my lappie... Even if you don't want to scrap you can sit and look through my small group of LO and massive collection of photos.. Mostly Grandies and my Maddy though :D
Thanks for the pep talk....I will stop being a big granny baby :D

Thanks Robyn.. I hope your car troubles get all sorted out by May...
And yes please Lauren... Any of your must see and do would be more than welcome...I have tried very hard to take the bad weather posibilities into consideration when making plans... We get so little rain here in the desert that if we do get it while in NZ I think it will be enjoyed... Thanks again everyone for helping to settleing my jitters a bit more..

I am going to be borrowing a laptop which will have some sort of version of Photoshop on it- what I would like to know - how many kits should and photos should I upload to bring along with me - I am so used to having all my kits on my computer it will be hard to choose which ones to bring along and the same with photos - is there going to be a format to what kind of layout we will be scrapping when at the crop?
Lauren
03-03-2009, 11:06 PM
What you scrap is completely up to you - we dont have any sort of format for that - any time you actually scrap you are completely free to scrap whatever you want!!!
If you have a portable external drive then thats a great option for storing your kits on in a portable format

Yes you should do it easily expecially if you start fairly early in the day and can avoid rush hour in Auckland ( 6.30 - 9.30 am ) - and from one having driven on US and NZ roads and expecting US roads to be much nicer than ours - I was surprised to find that actually our roads here are pretty good in comparison - I think its because you have so many big trucks using your roads compared to here.

Ineke, like Lauren said a portable hardrive is nice way to bring along lots. I didn't have a very big hard drive on my old laptop so I had to use a portable hardrives for all my kits and photos.. Not sure how expensive they are in Australia but they are pretty handy to have. I still use mine as a back up for kits and photos.

It's funny that you should mention this as I think Sharon had mentioned better roads in the US and I was kind of shocked as our roads, especially in So.California, are awful.. Yes big rig really mess them up... Glad to hear yours are in better condition.

Yeah right!!!!!!!!!- Actually I always find it worse coming home- I dont tend to suffer from jetlag too much when Im in the US after the trip over. - but coming home I feel it for a few days after - Im not sure whether thats because youve completely worn me out when Im over there or because of the direction of travel - guess you can be the guinea pig for that theory!!- -- anyway Im FAR older than you ( claim to be ) so its bound to affect me more and you in your youthful state wont be able to use it as an excuse !!!

Or you can just tell me to shut up already…..(Sigh)
welcome to the world of travellers.....guess what, your now acting like a human, not a cyberperson, I would be more worried about you if you didn't have these thoughts.....many a time as I walk down the long isle of a plane (I am always sitting down the back in the cheap seats) I have felt like yelling out "wait! I have made a mistake, I don't really want to go half way round the world" your just going to have a ball...believe me, once that plane takes off the knot in your tummy slowly goes (as you fill up on wine) and watch the same movie for the fourth time.
I leave elderly parents at home so know those little niggles of doubt very well, I just give them a big kiss before I go and tell them, thanks for a great life!!:yes::yes::yes:
so looking forward to seeing you...doesn't feel real yet:wave::wave:
