Booked..... Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How far is Birkenhead from Auckland? In minutes not miles? Still can't wrap my head around Kilometers.. I have to keep running out to my cars speedometer to figure it out... I really need to find a better system.. LOL
Angel don't be anxious.. You are going to have a blast.. Just think about it... A room full of gals, laptops, scrapping, and CHOCOLATE... Nothing to it but fun and lots of laughter.
Carley, I am sure you will have another chance with another crop.. You sure will have your hands full with a little one and moving.
Look out Kiwi's I am coming to New Zealand.... Yippppeeeeeee

Kim. The distance in time varies according to the time of day but early on a Saturday it's about 12 minutes from downtown Auckland. If you need picking up I'm sure we can arrange someone to do that. The venue is right opposite the Birkenhead bus company base for anyone wanting to bus it. Any Birkenhead bus company bus should get you there.

Thanks Lauren, I am really wrestling with what the best avenue to take will be. We may be traveling with friends. They haven't commited but are seriuosly considering it. So I need to find a happy place for us all to be through the crop. Some place that offers convenience for me and the crop but entertainment close at hand for them and DH. We should be flying in ether late Thursday or early Friday. And I am sure we will rent a car for our stay.. Do you think we should stay right in Auckland? Or is Birkenhead a good option? I think we will probably be wandering north and south for the rest of our stay but until the crop I think close by would work best. Thanks for any and all input here.
Lauren

Personally if I were you I would probably stay in the city. The venue is quite suburban and while ok if you have a car it wouldn't be my first choice of place for visitors to stay.
I'm sure someone will pick you up from town.

well I've got no idea on what it's like or price but I've always thought the sebel looks like a great location. It's right in the viaduct area which is very nice.Having said that there are several others in that area including the Hilton which is divine but expensive.

Lauren

I cant speak for Sharon or Erica who might organise one - but Margie and I are off down to the south island very very early Sunday morning so we wont be around for one then. At this point I dont have a clue what plans we have Friday but I know a lot of members have kids at school so if it was friday it would need to be in school hours probably.- I shall leave it to Sharon and or Erica to organise this one.

shazzt
02-02-2009, 08:36 PM
Sunday would be fine with me - probably morning so that I don't get in too much trouble with my beloved for staying away too long :) Weather at that time of year (well any time of the year!!) can be unpredictable. There is a nice bush walk very close to the venue (but if you are staying in town that may not be great. The Domain would be good for a photo walk - and if it is raining we could head to the musuem. The Winter Gardens (big greenhouses basically full of exotic plants) are beautiful too. Check out some shots on Flickr:

This sounds awesome!!!! I didn't even know laptop crops existed her in NZ. What exactly do you do for the weekend? Is it a set programme that you follow or is it just a case of what ever happens, happens?
I'm really niave at this so every little bit of info would be great. To give you an idea of how much I know about it..... I think I'm in dire need of a "Laptop Crops for Dummies" book lol.
I live in the Far North (Opononi) but DH's daughter lives just around the corner from where the crop is :)

Hi Honey, would be great to see you there and as to what happens! Well all I can say is a LOT of fun with some scrapbooking thrown in:rofl: You get to meet some wonderful scrapbooking addicts who are totally dedicated to having a good time, plenty of chatter and bring along a laptop if you have one or not, doesn't matter and chocolate of course always goes down well :D hope to see you there

Hi Honey!- Basically its a get together of like minded digital scrapbooking addicts - we scrap a little ,laugh a lot, eat a little ( or a lot) .
We often have casual classes throughout the day and anyone who wants one on one help gets it as there are lots of willing helpers. I tend to scrap very little personally as Im too busy talking!!!!!!!!- but Ive known of people whove finished 20 or more layouts in a day!!
I hope you can make it !!!

Kim Auckland is a pretty big city - Birkenhead where the crop is IS in Auckland- but its a suburb on the North Shore ( so over the harbour bridge ) - but to drive from one end of greater Auckland to the other would take you over an hour on a good day - - In fact I think I read once that geographically Auckland is one of the top 10 largest cities in the world !!- Population wise it barely rates of course!!- - so anyway the answer to your question is that for sure the photo walk will be in Auckland ( I can guarantee that even though I wont be there to run it!!)

The Sebel is nice (a friend of mine has stayed there a few times) and close to a lot of restaurants etc. We can definately organise a photo walk in the city. I think the Domain might be a good option (because it allows a place we could go if it rains which is not unusual in Auckland!) It is basically a big park with the museum sitting on the hill above and the Winter Gardens off to one side.

Not easily done as there are such great good weather things to do. I have been thinking a Bay of Islands day cruise looks cool but I can't find any info about taking one that time of year. Anyone ever do a day cruise in May?

Just letting you know ladies that there are only 10 spaces left at each crop. ( We are going to see if we can fit in more people in Queensland but we may not be able to so hurry hurry if you are coming - please register soon and guarantee your spot!!
For Auckland we can NOT increase the numbers so once those 10 spots are gone we will be closing registration

I'm pretty sorted and even though the fernz is suburban I don't really think I will be doing much other than relaxing so not too bothered about the location, and if I get antsy I could also grab a car for a day.
I intend coming up on the Monday night before and leaving on the Sunday I really need time out!
But I do have another bizarre question, at the moment I don't actually own a laptop, I want to get one but a really good one, so am not sure I am going to have one by the time the crops crop up, has anyone had any experience lugging a desktop around? I could hire one too I think, will check the prices closer to the date but just curious.

Q, my nephew lugs his desktop back and forth each year for Uni, its a huge hassle and risks getting damaged each time, so not really ideal unless you have to! You can hire laptops quite easily, then you can just bring a flash drive to put any work you do on to take home.
Looking forward to meeting you! :yahoo:

Oh my... Don't think I would lug my desktop around...Their hard drives are not as hardy as a laptops are... Renting sounds like a good idea..
Lauren or anyone else practiced in international travel, I have been bugging the heck out of Pam with international travel questions... Lauren, I know you have been back and forth to the US a few times. Any sound advice or things you can think of that will help make are travels easier would be super appreciated. Like how to survive a 13 hour flight....... Longest I have done is 6... 13 sounds so scary!
Lauren
02-09-2009, 06:33 PM
Sure - Im pretty practiced at that 13 hour flight by now !!- First off ask for an aisle seat. - You can phone Air NZ and ask them to book your seats now - you dont have to wait till you check in.
Air NZ has a great entertaiment system - with over 500 hours of movies on demand - you can watch them from the moment you get on the plane till you land these days - I dont sleep well on planes so this is a godsend.
You will get dinner and breakfast provided on the plane. and between they will switch out the lights and not come around too much so that you can try and sleep but you can always go and get a drink from the galley and they do bring around water every hour or so during the night.
You cant bring liquids or gels on the plane unless they are under 150ml and placed in a clear plastic bag. - so dont bring duty free liquor because its too much of a drama when you are changing planes ( Its fine if you are just making one flight but if you are changing planes it can be a drama)
You can buy duty free incoming to both Australia and NZ anyway.
With coming to NZ and Australia the main thing you have to know is NOT to bring ANY foodstuffs apart from wrapped candy. Both countries are VERY strict on bringing food into the country - but chocolate and candy is fine if its packaged.
Im happy to answer any other questions you might have. - just holler
Erica

I don't think lugging a desktop around the world would be at all fun! Renting could be an option for you Q, I rented some over here for a trade show once where I worked but they're not cheap, around $150 per day and of course they don't come with photoshop or your software of preference. Longest I've traveled is 27 hours going to England, now that is a long flight, I think they can even be a bit longer sometimes. Advice - get up and walk around, drink plenty of liquids (preferably the non alcoholic variety ;)), wear comfortable clothing and if you're like me I'd take a change of underwear for a long flight, I hate arriving feeling grubby :annoyed: oh! and a toothbrush and paste. :D

Eeekkk 24 hours.. Ok 13 sounds really doable :D.
Aisle seat, next to an empty one if possible. Don’t bring liquids but drink
plenty of liquor :D I mean liquids…. No foods ( I hope you all have what my husband calls sissy creamer, flavored coffee creamer. I was going to pack a container of the powder as it‘s the only way I drink coffee....I’ll be a wreak without it:eek:…).. Exception “Wrapped” candy.. York Peppermints already on my list :).. Feel free to make requests if you have an American fav you’d like brought to the crop. Movies, frequent walkabouts, comfy clothes (a friend also recommended comfy slip off shoes), clean undies and a toothbrush & paste to keep your breath minty fresh.. All great advice… Feel free to add anything that comes to mind. I like being prepared!

Do you think wrapped nutty snack bars for the plane ride would be considered candy? Hubby likes those better than candy.. Go figure!

02-10-2009, 11:08 AM
i can sleep anywhere, so i'm looking forward to a good night's sleep!!!! 13 hours, that's like a dream! :D dh though, he'll watch movies, poor guy. i'll probably need to stick with the window so i can just lean over and not bother anyone all night. :)
Lauren
02-10-2009, 11:59 AM
You can bring what you like to eat on the plane. Just make sure you leave it on the plane and don't forget and bring it in. We have flavoured coffee creamers here ;
( shudder) but coffee here doesn't bear much resemblance to the stuff you call coffee over there !!!!!!!(told you I was a coffee snob didn't I!!)
Donut
02-10-2009, 03:55 PM
LOL Lauren!! We will have converted at least a few of them to Flat Whites before they leave! :)
Another thing I just thought of for those morning coffee people, in hotels here you will usually find tea and coffee making facilities in your room, but don't expect the percolators like you get in US hotels, it will be instant sachets and a kettle!
I can never sleep much on planes, but the last time I did the NZ - UK trip I had some noise reduction headphones, mine are Sennheiser, but there are lots of different brands out there, but if you get some make sure they come with the adaptor so that you can plug them in on the plane to use for movies etc instead of those floppy ones they provide. They are amazing! I kept them on all the time, not just for watching movies, (where you can actually hear what is being said!) but to sleep as well, they cut out that awful droning engine noise but you can still hear if someone speaks to you. Well worth investing in!
I cant remember if its been mentioned here or not, but the long overnight flights have a 'nighttime' period of about 9 hours where the lights are down and no food is served, although they come around regularly with thimbles of water. If your internal clock thinks this period is daytime you can feel very hungry and although snacks are often avaialable to help yourself to like pretzels etc, its a good idea to take something more substantial along with you, just remember not to take it off the plane when you land in NZ! I once had a forgotten apple at the bottom of my bag, which was found at customs, it was an honest mistake and so easy to make when you are travelling, I wasnt fined, but the funny thing was it was an NZ Rose apple, grown here, exported to UK, bought in Sainsburys and carried back to NZ!!
Lauren
02-10-2009, 05:02 PM
Yeah you might get a coffee plunger in a hotel these days but not always - its hideous instant coffee usually so for me it means a trip to the nearest cafe as I cant ABIDE instant coffee.
I can also vouch for taking your own headphones - the airline provided ones hurt your ears if you have them on for the whole flight - Its taken me several trips to work that one out!!- Noise reduction ones would be the most awesome!
Oh and thats funny Pam about the apple - DId i see you on Border Patrol?????????!!!!- YOu can guarantee if you have fruit or fresh food on you they will find it - they have dogs all around sniffing you out!!!!!!!!
Auckland Airport is actually one of the better airports that Ive had to use - - its pleasant with some nice shopping if you are waiting for a plane - several cafes and a bar - and of course the fast food places too if you are into that, and its not huge so its almost impossible to get lost!!

I booked our flight today :yahoo
:You can bring what you like to eat on the plane. Just make sure you leave it on the plane and don't forget and bring it in. We have flavoured coffee creamers here ;
( shudder) but coffee here doesn't bear much resemblance to the stuff you call coffee over there !!!!!!!(told you I was a coffee snob didn't I!!)
I knew I would get a rise out of you Lauren concerning the flavored creamer:lol::lol::lol: Can't wait to taste the difference between coffees. I am not a big fan of Starbucks :D and would go cafine free before giving into INSTANT ...
Flat Whites:confused::confused::confused:
Oh no... Might have to purchase and drag around a real coffee maker :D

Ok - yes you need a dictionary - a flat white is a type of coffee thats only found in AUstralia and NZ - its closest to a latte for you but stronger with a higher % of coffee to milk than in your lattes . Starbucks ew ew ew.
A coffee plunger is for making real coffee - you put the ground coffee in - and boiliing water and plunge down a filter which keeps the grounds apart from the water.

Hello everyone... It's me the pesky clueless travel planning maniac... I so see now how a travel agent earns their money.. This is a lot of work...
I have a question...Since it's too long a drive to go from Bay of Islands to Rotorua in one day we will go from Bay to Auckland, stay the night in Auckland then head out first thing to Rotorua. I need an easy on and off the 1, over night place in Auckland to stay the night. It's doesn't need to be fancy. Just clean and convenient to traveling on to Rotorua the next day.
TIA, Kim
Lauren
02-22-2009, 05:32 PM
Well you COULD drive from the Bay of Islands to Rotorua in a day - if you left early in the morning - its about 3 hours from the Bay of Islands to Auckland and then another 2 and a half to Rotorua if you didnt stop much on the way.
If you dont want to drive that far in one hit then there are plenty of places fairly close to the motorway but honestly I wouldnt stop I would just carry on
Erica

Well we are thinking about it and if we were here in the states we would do just that but until we have actually drove a bit on the "other side" of the road from the "other side" of the car we are a bit hesitant to commit to carrying on just in case it's a wee bit STRESSful .. I have a hotel all mapped out for Rotorua but want a back up plan. Pam mentioned that there is not a lot to chose from between Auckland and Rotorua so don't want to push much past Auckland if we are feeling like the longer drive is too much.
Lauren did you drive at all while here in the US?
Thanks Erica for Jason's link.. I'll have a look at it as well.
Lauren
02-22-2009, 10:32 PM
I didnt drive Kim but my husband Steve did quite a bit - he didnt really find it a problem - once you are on the motorway of course it wont be a problem at all - it only becomes an issue when you are turning, or starting off or pulling out of a road onto another.
Because you are on the other side of the car and the other side of the road it really pretty much feels the same when you are going straight!!!
There are plenty of hotel/motels that are close to a motorway offramp anyway - - If you want a list I can give you a list but I cant recommend any as Ive not stayed at them

DH says he has been virtual "other side" driving on and off and thinks he will be fine. I am the one who is nerves.. LOL.. So just a few would be nice. I can check them out on Tripadvisor once I have a few names. I tried to look for them myself but have no idea which ones would be right off the 1. More than likely we will be heading on to Rotorua.
Lauren
02-23-2009, 01:23 AM
Ok here are a list of a few that are very close to the motorway in Auckland
Hotel Ibis Ellerslie
Alpers Lodge Newmarket
Boulevard Hotel Newmarket
Parklane Motor Lodge - Epsom
As I said I cant say i know any of these personally so cant recommend them or otherwise

Most of the time driving on the "other" side of the road is not a problem. I drove quite a bit when I was in America and only erred once (where a two way street suddenly turned into a one way street!). I realised my mistake almost immediately and no harm was done (luckily - I was paranoid about being sued for millions if I had an accident). The roads here are probably not as good as you are used to Kim but most people seem to cope with them. You should be fine :)
Donut
02-23-2009, 04:58 AM
Kim, just sent you a message but I forgot to say, if you can drive on those crazy scary 5 lane "Christine" like roads round LA area you will be fine on our little 2 lane motorway! :)Last time I was back in UK I had to drive from Brighton to Lincoln, (about 4 -5 hours of motorways) and nearly had a heart attack doing so! My knuckles were white and I couldn't uncurl my fingers by the time I got there! lol!! I got teased something dreadful for having become a soft wus! NZ roads are easy, and surprisingly well signposted for the most part, so long as you know the main towns that the road is heading for, and whether that is north or south of Auckland, you will be fine!
I think you will be surprised how quickly you will get used to having a topsy turvy car too. I used to drive in France when we went over and always found it was just those first few minutes that seemed weird then you are ok. There are a few of our road rules that might be different, but as long as you are aware of them, like the turning right rule, there will be no problems!

That would be great if I could Julia

Also on the subject of transport - will anyone be coming back across the bridge to Auckland on Saturday night? If so I would love to get a ride back to Britomart so I can catch a train home

You are more important than your ATCs and Namecard!
Have a good trip

I finished my name tag today. :) I scrapped the one I'd been trying to get to work and started again, should have done that ages ago!
ATCs are another matter though, I still have to finsh/print/laminate them...but when?! (If there is someone hiding in under the table in the corner on Saturday morning with scissors and a laminator that will be me! :) )

:yikes: You ran out!
Erica, did you do variations or all the same?
And did you laminate them? I feel that they [mine] will either be binned or be stored in a box or business card book so is lamination necessary. :help:
So looking forward to Saturday! :yahoo:
EDIT: I suppose they would need laminating if printed on paper (lots of possibilities with coloured papers....)

Well plan A for printing the ATC's didn't work so will have to print them at home instead and get my mum to cut them out tomorrow while I am at work which means mine will not be laminated unless I have them all done tonight so I can get them laminated on the way to work tomorrow

I'm not stressing at all  - my name tag is not done so will probably be a variation of my atc or even my atc at this stage. For me if it's not done by 3pm tomorrow it's not being done as I don't get home til almost 11pm from work.

Well some of their faces are known from their avatars but that is such a small thing and might even be years old... well not Sharon's... How far to/since day 365 Sharon? dithering on when I should be getting my laptop up to speed - so much is dismally missing that I take for granted on my 'proper' PC. At least I have packed the stickers, Julia :D

I got home fine by 10.15pm last night. Thanks so much Pam for dropping me back off in Auckland.
Slept really well last night so ended up waking up too late to head back for the photo walk.
Instead I spent 2 hours on the phone and online trying to find a printer - not much luck in finding one in a store (it was either returned/broken or missing cables) so ended up going online and finding an Epson Stylus TX200 Multifunction at Elive for $135 including shipping. Hopefully once I go to the bank tomorrow to deposit the money for it I should get my new printer on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hi all my sweet Kiwi friends.. I am so bad. I have been meaning to get in here to tell you all how special it was to meet each of you IRL and what a wonderful time I had at the crop & walk. You know what they say about those good intentions.. And I have lots of them (sigh).. Anyway you Kiwi's know how to make a foreigner feel right at home... I had a marvelous time and look forward to a return visit. Hoping to get at some of my photo and create a few pages to post soon.. Speaking of photos.. WOW... I have seen more than a few gorgeous ones from the crop and walk. Oh and Sharon I am so sad we did not bump into each other in Piahia.. We stayed on for the whole week (once we set eyes on the place we didn't want to leave.. LOL) and it looks like we did most of the same things. Of course anyone comparing our photos would wonder about that. Your's are all stunning! Love more than a few of the marvelous angles you snapped your shots at.. Mine are quite dull in comparison!
Hugs all and thanks once again for your gracious hospitality... You are all a wonderful bunch...
P.S. I have to tell you all, thanks to a lively talk about New Zealand's major pest the "Possum", some very funny comments regarding them on our Photo walk and the Possum round ups story we saw on your news, DH and I had more than few giggles each time we saw a little mushed gob on a kiwi road surface. LOL.. One down and only millions to go.. Darn pesky possum!

Hi Kim!! Glad you got home safely. Can't believe we didn't bump into you up there. I don't blame you for not wanting to leave - looks like we got the best of the weather that week. It was fantastic meeting you and I hope the rest of your trip was fun :)
Hi Kim. It was wonderful to meet you too. Pity you didn't get down to the Hawke's Bay, but there is just so much to see in NZ and just so much time ...
Funny about the possums - I know they're pests, but I always feel a bit sorry for the ones I see squashed on the road - big softy that I am!
So glad you enjoyed our part of the world - let me know when you're coming back!
