Welcome back, Lauren ... hope you had a FABULOUS time on vacation!!
Here is one from me ... a picture I have not scrapped yet (although it is a favorite), because I just haven't found the right kit. When I put it into Kuler (http://kuler.adobe.com/), I think I learned I was looking for the wrong colors!

Oh Lauren, you've made my day! This is only the second time I've submitted colors, though I spent a couple evenings making swatches inspired by travel photos. Look for more from me!
One thing, mine displays way too big. I couldn't figure out how to make it smaller. Should I upload at a smaller size?
I keep these all in a private album. Don't know how others do it.
Thanks you again Lauren! Welcome back. Sheryl

Ok, I've been playing around on Kuler. When you download a swatch how are you opening it? Mine are saving as ASE files. The only way I've been able to do anything with them is to load them into my color palatte. And then they just kind of show up at the end. Is there any way to save the swatch it creates as a jpeg?
Oh that is lovely. How about a watery sort of bg like the middle woman's headscarf?

You have to load the ASE file into your swatches, and it just adds the colors to the swatches. As for making your swatch to post here, I made a little template for Photoshop users. Just like a quick click, put your photo on the bottom layer (under the Color 5 layer), and then use the paint bucket to fill each color swatch layer.
Then save your JPG image to upload. Let me know if this works ... maybe I can figure out how to do this as a quick click so non-Photoshop users can use it also.
If I have done this post right, there should be a link to the ZIP file.

I love the straw hat idea weave idea too. It would make for a warm feeling.
I also thought about turquoise...like the stone with feathering type of lines through it. Am I explaining this ok? Kind of like you do marbleing...but like the stone instead. Later on we could have silver elements maybe.

The way I did it was to upload them just as I would any other post. They're in their own album. When I want to post the swatch, I go to the gallery and open the particular swatch. Right click on the image, and go down to "copy image location."
Then come back to the forum. In your reply, click "go advanced."
Up in the right-hand corner is a little symbol that sort of looks like A/A. Click on that.
Then on the tools manual is one that is a picture with a mountain in it. Click on that. You'll get a pop-up for the URL. Put the URL for your image in there, and you should see your image right away.
Hope it works.

Okay, so I looked up ghost towns in New Zealand, but I didn't find much...so don't think the cowboy theme would be appropriate there. Were they mine towns?
Still think a paper that looks like the stone would be pretty.
Or a turquoise paper that looks like a homespun type of fabric with little nubs of the other colors here and there.
A calico print with the colors in it on a turquoise.

I had to go google calico when I saw the mat... apparently calico in the US doesn't mean what calico means in New Zealand... Now it makes perfect sense to have a calico mat :)! (I wonder how many of you will go search for calico now?)
For ideas... I think a brown paper tree would be cool or a rustic branch. I also think a nice looped lasso (thin please) or raffia or something lasso colored would be nice around an edge.
mariafer
01-31-2009, 10:15 AM
I felt bad making you go look so here is what I found out: (from wikipedia)
Calico has different meanings according to which country the word is used in. Originally calico was a plain-woven textile which originated in Calicut, Kerala, India in the 11th century. The fabric was made by the traditional weavers called chaliyans.
In the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, "calico" refers to fabric made from unbleached, and often not fully processed, cotton, which may for example contain unseparated husk parts. The fabric is less coarse and thick than canvas or denim, but because of its unfinished and undyed state, it is still very cheap. As it is an inexpensive and readily available fabric, calico is often used by tailors in the construction of toile — mockups of a garment for the purpose of testing a pattern.
[edit] In New Zealand
In New Zealand this same fabric is known as "mutton cloth" and is used for wrapping food for cooking underground, in a hangi.
[edit] In the USA
In the US however, the word calico is used quite differently. In American English, calico is a word for inexpensive printed cotton fabrics that have a colorful small, all-over pattern, which is often floral.[1] These colorful, small patterned, printed fabrics are what gave rise to the use of the term calico in the name of a cat coat color: "calico cat".
The fabric that is called calico in the UK is called muslin in the USA.
Lauren
01-31-2009, 01:41 PM
Was that from wikipedia?? Calico here is pretty much exactly what is descibed as for the UK. I've never heard it referred to as mutton cloth, but then I've never cooked a hangi either. Funny how they make it sound like something we do regularly.
mariafer
01-31-2009, 02:02 PM
and you don't? LOL! I guess that is why they don't allow it as research in some schools.
When I heard calico suggested though I thought calico cat also... that is why I had to go see... I know how to ask for this type of texture though from now on...
sandygb
01-31-2009, 05:16 PM
Interesting....calico to me is exactly what is says for the US......cotton fabric with a tiny colorful print - like the kind you would often find in a handmade quilt.
sandygb
01-31-2009, 05:21 PM
How about a string of beads in the kit colors, to be used as a border element. It could be plain beads, or have some scrolly gold metal behind it.....or it could have groupings of 3 beads, separated by gold swirlies.....and continuing along the border.
How about a smattering of dew drop like gems (turquoise, yellow and clear)?

Love the frame and flourish. The coloring in particular is quite lovely.
How about a deep, 3" - 4", tear that was really just the torn fibers in the color of the mat so it could easily be recolored to use with any of the papers.
A double sided scalloped element, maybe with small dot cut outs. Kind of like either of these (which I cheated and made using Lisa's Decorative Edges Set 1 (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7294)
Decorative Edges Set 2 (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7295)), but kind of folded up along the lines down the middle, and wrinkled along the edges. Maybe in the blue color, with bits of the yellow or neutral color.

hmmmm, just a note on the "Calico" term.. it is also what we call a Cat/ animal that has a fur with several colors in it - mostly mentioned in regards to some sort of orange or rust color.
I adore what this kit is becoming!

a ribbon with a pattern like the striped paper (I'm imagining one thats got a pattern like the light blue stripe with the dark blue) would be a really nice addition! I still like the idea of a wax seal looking thing though too hehe

Wow loving this kit so far. How about a loop or something to hang the frame from along with a rusty nail or brad.

I know I know - a rusty spring - you haven't done one in a kit yet, have you?

Could we still have something leather. I have seen some of the leather belts and hat bands done with the leather embossed and the raised areas of it painted or dyed in the same colors that you have in this kit.

I really like Sandy's money tree idea. Any dried flower would be pretty, but the money tree is light and airy.
How about a closely woven thin basket that could be used on the bottom of the layout.

Love it.
Cream flower with a touch of the brown around the petals and a middle made from the bluish metal. Maybe with frayed edges on the petals.

The frame makes me think of a large mirror. How about a reflective surface so it looks like someone is looking in a mirror?

Love all the additions, Lauren!
How about a worn, stapled ribbon, frayed a touch along the way, in the blue? Darker cream?
A teal, spotted, frayed-along-the-way ribbon? Not straight but not too twisted either :)

It was given at one of Lauren's crop chats. You have to attend to get the flair.

Forgotten Roads - it feels as though we have rambled off the main highway and headed down a forgotten road where there are old things, a little rust, a few flowers, but somewhere completely charming and amazing.
