February Graphically Challenged!

Are you ready for the very first Graphically Challenged hosted by yours truely? :yahoo:

I thought I would start with an easy one this month, at least I hope so! ;-)

This months challenge is to create a layout with a photo blended onto the background. How you do it is entirely up to you, whether the photo takes up the whole page, a part of the page, or is a duplicate of another photo on the same page that is not blended.

I have done up a photoshop tutorial (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_blendmodes_rg/ps_blendmodes_rg.shtml)for you to follow for those of you who need help with blending, and blend modes which is now available in the DSU. There are other blending tutorials there as well for those of you who use different software.

Here is an example of a layout I have created using a new kit of mine which will be in the store soon. As you can see I used the same photo twice for effect. I used a combination of Overlay and Linear Burn Blend modes on the photo blended onto the background.

The Rules

You must use a DSP product (or lots and lots of products) in your layout. This can be store purchased, freebies, etc.
You must have your layout in the graphically challenged gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=6698) by midnight on the 28th of February in order to be eligible for the drawing.
You must link back in this thread, so that I can grab a random winner from this thread.


What can you win?

I am SO excited for this challenge! I've been wanting to make "graphic" style pages but wasn't sure where to start. This is my FIRST attempt at a totally graphic page! I have a ton of pictures of Giraffes from when Chris and I went to the Cheyenne Mtn. zoo this past August, and I thought this was the PERFECT opportunity to use them!! I'm hoping to make a couple more to test my "blending" techniques out! Thanks for an awesome challenge Robyn!!

Hey Ladies

Sorry I haven't been keeping up today, I have been dealing with a head lice crisis! Found a louse on my daughters head this morning, I had just taken her with me to work as she was complaining of tummy pain. I think she had some indigestion so I gave her some milk and dh was going to pick her up and take her to school a little later.. anyway, in the meantime I was taking her out to the toilet and was walking behind her and spotted a little brown thing on her head~! :eek: :(

She has been complaining about itching all week and has had a rash on her head and neck, and I have been checking and checking and checking but have found nothing so thought it was heat rash since it has been rather hot here. Anyway, I looked closer at the brown thing, and it was a little bug. I had never seen a head lice before, and it definately wasn't a flea, so I googled it, and sure enough it was definately a head lice. On futher investigation I found some eggs as well.

I rang my son's daycare to get them to check him and they found some eggs in his hair as well, so i had to finish some urgent stuff at work before picking my son up, going to the chemist and then I spent 3 hours treating, conditioning and combing both of their hair. My son's wasn't too bad because his is quite fine and nice and short, but my daughters took ages, because she has thick waist length hair. :cry:

They are definately all dead, and I think I got them all out, but will retreat again on the weekend and see how we go after that. Will likely treat a third time as well. :cry:

Now I sit here with the kids in bed on fresh sheets, pillowcases and doona covers and a strong smell of tea tree oil through the house as well as an ugly green shower cap on my head! ROFL DH and I are treating our hair as well just in case.

Anyway, back to business!!!

A bit of a quirky one ! The word "boinked" is not a gradient.. it's a blending mode which picked up the colors of the photo edge !

You are correct this tutorial is Photoshop CS+ but I am pretty sure it will work for PSE as well.

I just installed a copy of PSE5 I had been meaning to install for a while to double check and it has both blend modes and the ability to adjust the opacity, so you should be able to follow the tutorial, it shouldn't be TOO much different from PSE. Let me know if you get stuck anywhere and I can try and help.

Here is a screenshot of where you can change your layer blend modes and opacity in PSE.

You hold down the Ctrl key and while doing that press the C key. It won't look like anything has happened, but what you have copied will be saved to your windows clipboard. Then when you go to paste it, pressing the Ctrl and V keys, it will magically appear. :-)

The sunset is it's own photo, blended into the BG. The seagull is also it's own photos, duplicated. The bottom layer is blended into the BG and the top layer has lowered opacity. I wanted to bring him *out* a little from the BGs, so he could lose his feathers! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have a question about the blending. Is it best to choose a background with similar colors in it as the photo? I know with this one, we changed the mode to overlay, so the photo picked up the color of the background. My photo was a black and white photo, so it turned totally pink. But if I had used a color photo, the pink wouldn't have looked good with lots of colors in a photo, right? Am I making any sense?

But if I had used a color photo, the pink wouldn't have looked good with lots of colors in a photo, right? Am I making any sense?

I guess it really depends on the effect you are after, if you don't mind the pink look go for it, otherwise, yes picking a more monocrome or neutral colour might be better suited. Another option might be to desaturate the colour of the paper under where the photo is going to be blended, if that makes sense? So that it still has the texture, but not as much colour showing through. Using different blend modes will also allow different amounts of the paper colour to show through.

For me, when working with blend modes.. I do lots of experimenting! You also might like to try duplicating the photo layer and using a combination of different blend modes on each layer.

This layout took me about 4 hours or so to get it just the way I liked it. I was following a blog posting by Nicole Young (http://nicoleyoungdesigns.blogspot.com/2009/02/blended-photo-and-background-tutorial.html) but I don't have CS3, just Photoshop Elements 7 so I had extra work to blend the two photos. The ribbon was my own design.

When you click on upload photos in the gallery, there is a drop down box right above where you browse for your layout on your computer. If you click on that you should be able to find the gallery that you want to post it in. There are a lot of choices so you will have to search for it. When you upload to a gallery, your layout will automatically upload to your gallery, too. If you want to change galleries, just choose to edit your photo and click on the same drop down gallery box. Anytime you move a layout from gallery to gallery, it will always be in your member gallery. HTH
