I am sure many of you are aware by now of the devastation occuring right now in Australia, thanks to the horrific fires that are taking place. The death toll has now reached 173 and hundreds and hundreds of homes have been lost. There are quite a few stories about it here (http://ninemsn.com.au/), if you want to find out more about it.
I just thought I would post a thread for those of you who wanted to help out and make a donation. I know times are tough, but if you can spare a small amount, no matter how small.. every little bit counts.
You can make donations to the appeal at Australian Red Cross (https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp)

Oh you can donate to the salvation army as well, if you want to donate in your own currency you can do so via the international Salvation Army website, just be sure to state that the funds go to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009.

Good idea Robyn. I have been watching the news...and I just can't believe how awful this is unfolding to be. 750 homes plus..they say nearly 3000 people without homes. And yes, the death count at 173 but is tipped to rise as they start being able to go through the burned out houses and of the cars as they tried to flee. There is a 6 car collision and they are unsure as yet if the occupants all dies as a result of the collision or of the smoke or the raging fire.
Imagine what that would be like?? How scared would those people of been. I have tears in my eyes just thinking of it.

Yes it is absolutely horrifying, I have been avoiding the news because I just can't bear it, it is just all too sad and depressing. I really cannot imagine a worse way to die, and all those families who have lost loved ones. :-( And then all the material damage, who knows how long it will take for insurance claims to come through. So so sad!
I have already made a donation and hope to make more as funds permit. I can't give blood because I am anemic but I am going to nag DH to do it as he is in perfect health and they need blood for all the burn victims.

Its dreadful - the news reports are horrifying and so emotional. I will be making a donation tomorrow. There is a lady here in NZ who is collecting childrens clothing that is being sent to the Red Cross

The death toll is now over 180 and they are expecting it to reach around 300 once they go through all the properties and cars that were burnt.
But here is something amongst it all to warm your heart a little. I thought this was such an amazing photo.

That is amazing. I really feel for the animals who get caught in this (as well as the people of course). What a stunning photo.

I can't imagine how horrible it must be to have been there or to be doing the recovery work afterwards. So, so sad.

I just found this thread. The news stories are just heartbreaking, I dont know how the people can go forward from such horrors. They will need a lot of help for a long time.

I have just found this thread too, been directed here through the might of the mighty Grannies. There is a pall over Aus, not just of smoke, but of disbelief, horror, sorrow, but in the midst of it, the wonderful Aussie spirit shines through!
Amidst the stories of tragedy, destruction, fury etc. there have been some beautifully moving photos and news stories to gladden the heart such as the koala one which will long be remembered.Thank you for starting this thread Robyn, I have already donated personally and our Line Dancing group made a $1000 donation on Tuesday.
It is beyond belief how horrible the devasting fires are destroying so much. The horror of it is reaching all of us no matter where we live.

I started looking at some of the photos posted above but had to stop. There is so much devastation, but also the hope shines through. The world weeps with you, Australia.

It is hard to look at isn't it. I get so sad when I look at the photos, and people have been sending me stuff at work, and I just don't open the emails anymore. We have been so bombarded by the images on the news that I have been turning that off, because it is just so sad and depressing.
I do look occasionally, but avoid it as much as I can, because it bothers me so much and I don't even know anyone personally who has been touched by it. I dread to think how those are feeling who are much closer to it.
And to think some of those fires where started deliberately.:mad::mad:

The horror and heart-breaking news of these fires renders me speechless. I cannot adequately express in words my shock, sympathy and concern for all those affected. I am praying hard that the devastation will be put to an end quickly, and for all those victims & for the people of Australia.

I have heard a report that one of the arsonists have been arrested. While it can never come close to replacing what has been lost, it has be to a comfort knowing that this freak can't/won't be doing anything close to this again.
