What are you giving UP for LENT!!!!

For me it is always about what I can do to make myself a better person. Kinder to the family, kinder with my words to others and about others, work on personal disciplines...things like that. I'm also very involved in my church during lent for all of the activities that go on. Yesterday, I participated in adoration which is something I have never done before. I felt a little like a fraud going into it because I had no idea what I was supposed to do and there have been times that I have questioned this very aspect of the Catholic Church. Turns out it was a good thing and I feel I got a lot out of it.

Doesn't mean I'm going to give up my choice cuss words, my occasional glass of wine, or my chocolate though. Give me a break. I don't claim to be the world's best Catholic. Let me have something to say in confession!

Our priest always has the same thing every year that he claims to give up for lent... $ex and smoking. Oh he thinks he is so funny.

I truly wish you could all come with me just for the afternoon. I absolutely love it when it is just the prep work team. They are the best group of people and I feel simply honored to be among them. The stories that they tell are amazing, funny and inspiring. They talk of kids and grandkids with faces brimming with pride. They talk about the past in such a way that you feel as if you were there beside them.

I'll take some pictures of course but pictures just do not seem enough.

My very 1st job was working in a nursing home... and I learned such a valuable lesson... so many there had no one at all to visit with them... my best friend worked with me...

And, we went after hours, lunch breaks and on weekends to visit with those who had no one..

And, the elderly have been those I have volunteered for - on and off for my entire life... (I have to take breaks as it breaks my heart)

Mum is in and out of hospital at the moment, and needs heart surgery in two weeks so its up to me to do the shopping, etc as dads 83 and not coping to well

but on top of this my very bestest of all times girlfriend (after Inks of course) was taken seriously last weekend. I now have her family staying with me as I am very close to the hospital....looks like we could be in for a long haul....so between going from hospitals and shopping for my mum and feeding all my visitors I am a bit time strapped

thinking of you all...wishing I could play here, but I will be back

glad that you are ok, even though a bit over worked. We miss you, so please take care and I will be sending you lots of good wishes and thoughts

I had to stop off and show you all my heart. Last night when we were getting ready to go to the Beta Club induction ceremony, I got Russ to sit for this photo. I was trying out settings on the ole camera. I rather love this result.

BBL. I am off to take Mother to the eye doctor again. She has to have cataract surgery; her cataracts are getting so large that they could damage her vision. She is waffling on having it done; I am insistent that she goes through with it. We shall see who wins this one.

      We are so proud to call you *GRANNIES*!!! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

OK, this is all mostly Greek to me... I've been wondering about "Camera Raw", what does it involve? Does your camera have to be set somewhere to do this, and what are the advantages of using it?

Someone may have answered this already and better, but I'll give it a try. Open your photo in Bridge; right click and you should have a bunch of options, one of which is *Open in Camera Raw*! - NO! You do not have to set your camera in any special manner. I shoot all in .jpeg and *always* open and "fiddle" in camera raw, thanks to Christine and Sands. :D There are bunches of settings you can adjust! White balance, exposure, brightness and contrast, clarity, saturation and something else I can't think of right now  are the ones that I use most. They can really make a drab photo pop!!! Then just go down to the bottom, toward the right and click *open image* and it will open in CS3. Have fun!!!

:D No I dont know where your phone book is WW, but we Did receive our new one this week if thas any help:D...and dont you know that blokes look for stuff with their mouths and not their eyes????
So LL, your birthday is not until July? Wonder why I thouht it was Jan or Feb...maybe it was Freda's I was thinking of. Hope Carma is OK, Freda, thanks for trying to contact her. I guess she will pop in if she can..she'll be a tad confused about our new Granny room though, wont she:)

Karen, your recipe sounds deadly delicious, but I dont know what Twinkies are...wonder if there is an equivalent here...I see Leslie suggested Tim Tams but Im not too sure if she was serious:D:D

My hubby has OCD Im convinced:eek::eek:...this week he spent AGES putting a number of Bank statements into date order before shredding them:confused::confused:. Also, one day we had two loaves of bread on the go, and he fussed a bit about having the right little bag closure on the right bag when we'd finished with the bread:eek::D....another day he gave me a cup of tea in his mug because I set the mugs up side by side in the wrong order (he had his coffee in my mug:D)....oh dear, I think the disease is progressive too:D:D:D

Jill, have you tried smacking him upside the head??? :yikes:  :yikes:  :yikes:

Hi DixieMama - I am not sure if this will work in CS2. Open up Bridge and select the photo you want to alter. click on FILE and look down the list to see if you can OPEN IN CAMERA RAW. then you can alter the white balance in camera raw.

Bridge??? I seem to recall having that, but now I can't find it? Will it open my .jpeg in RAW?

Hi Dixie MAMA - I have sent you a pm about macro shots

Got it and responded! :D

If you have a DLSR camera you have 2 choices - you can take your photos in Camera RAW or .jpg images. Camera RAW does not PROCESS your image in any way and thus allows you to do way more post production processing to your image in Adobe photoshop. This is where YOU set the white balance, f stop, etc... you are no longer on AUTO...

There are many features that you can take advantage of by shooting your photos in a "raw" image.

However, starting with CS3 and CS4 you can actually take .jpg images and process them as if they were "camera raw" images...

I know this is a quick and dirty .. but I

hope this makes sense..

So I think this takes me out of contention, as I only have CS2. :(

CONGRATS TO SANDS ... HALL OF FAME!!!:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::tup::tup::tup:

Marriage (Part I )
>>
>> Typical macho man married typical good-looking lady, and

>> Those are my rules. Any comments?"
>> His new bride said:
>> "No, that's fine with me. Just understand that there will be
>> s*x here at seven o'clock every night...whether you're here or not."
>>
>> (DARN SHE'S GOOD!)
>>
>> ************************************************
>>
>> Marriage (Part II)
>>
>> Husband and wife had a bitter quarrel on the day of their
>> 40th wedding anniversary!
>>
>> The husband yells, "When you die, I'm getting you a headstone
>> that reads, 'Here Lies My Wife -- Cold As Ever'!"
>>
>> "Yeah?" she replies. "When you die, I'm getting you a

>> She comes to the phone after many rings, and the irritated

>> "Getting a second opinion!"

>>
>> One night, they go to a party. The man decides that it IS

>>
>> THE SILENT TREATMENT
>>
>> A man and his wife were having some problems at home
>> and were giving each other the silent treatment.

>> Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he

I am darned if I can get the subscription turned off for this thread. I have fiddled with it for days now. It used to come in an email once a day, but since the changevoer to the new forum, I am getting am email for every single post. But I finally wised up and just let them sit there. Then all the emails sit inside ONE email. I will go and stare at where it says: Notification - instant, and glare at it.

I tried on the actual email, 22 times, where it says, click here to unsubscribe from this thread. And while fiddling, I found out that I am subscribed to 433 threads - I read widely. lol

Leslie
02-27-2009, 04:43 PM
OK, so I have turned ALL the subscriptions to once a day email - but, I used to have that on the GT, and instant on ALL the others. Bother!

We are living in Oman on a TEMPORARY BASIS, just while DH has work here. We never know from year to year how much longer we are going to be here. We have been told this year that we still are good for another year :).

But the bigger picture is..... we definitely won't be living here forever! So we are looking for somewhere we can settle. There are a few places we are looking, and one of them being Aus. We haven't been there yet, and will need to go and have a look, to make up our minds.

So... the answer is no, we aren't leaving Oman YET :).

Shoot it Leslie!!!! Cant stand those birds, they catch and eat the small native and other birds, raid the nests and eat the babies...they drape their"kill" through the angled structural bits of our clothesline and tear the bodies to pieces leaving the head stuck in the angles....I hate those birds!!!!!! They are supposed to go back to the cooler mountains during our summers but the wretched things have stayed all summer long!!!

Leslie
02-27-2009, 06:57 PM
Jill - I used to really hate them, but now, I really hate the blasted crows who live in the courtyard outside my classroom and do the same thing to all the smaller birds and CAW CAW CAW so revoltingly all day long.

They did it in assembly on Friday and the whole school laughed when I turned around and hissed SHUSH! at them.

I just hate big violent birds. The currawongs are scarce here now thank goodness and just come through to eat the magnolia fruits and things like that. The crows, chuffs, big black things, have all taken over.

I love sparrows and magpies best. We have a kookaburra in the mornings here at the moment.

If you want to know how to creatively crop your photo like on the second one, I posted a tutorial on my blog today, or you can get the pdf file from my Triple T Thursday thread. Both links are on the LO's description, if you need them.

Off to do more zooming around, but hope all is going well for everyone. Big hugs!

Hello everyone - I know a secret about one of these layouts - I'm not telling you what it is, but I know something!! :D

Jill has been tugging on my threads, sorry I have been walkabout but my house is a bit mad.

Mum is in and out of hospital at the moment, and needs heart surgery in two weeks so its up to me to do the shopping, etc as dads 83 and not coping to well

but on top of this my very bestest of all times girlfriend (after Inks of course) was taken seriously last weekend. I now have her family staying with me as I am very close to the hospital....looks like we could be in for a long haul....so between going from hospitals and shopping for my mum and feeding all my visitors I am a bit time strapped

thinking of you all...wishing I could play here, but I will be back

stay safe all....cuddle your loved ones:hug::hug:

Dags... I don't know what to say, that's an awful lot to be dealing with right now. I hope that our hugs and our love make a difference. It's easy to say chin up and you can do it, but when you are living it, life can be very discouraging!!

it has just been such an extra long week really glad to put it behind me.
One of Donn's online friends who lives in Fort Worth went and visited his grave site today and took some more photos for me and he has organised for some flowers to be placed on it as well. Then yesterday in the mail I got 2 wonderful cards from more of Donn's online friends and included in with the cards were certificates where they had donated money to the AIDS Research Council in Donn's name. Donn's brother Paul died of AIDS in 2004 and they knew how strongly Donn felt about supporting AIDS research and education.
I also received a wonderful PM from one of the grannies who also donated money to the Bushfire appeal in Donn's name.

As long as I live i will never forget the love, support, generosity and kindness that has been shown to me from all of mine and Donn's online friends.

I have to say that friends are one of the most amazing gifts God ever gave us. They are just the remedy for times of trouble. Sometimes just knowing that they care and love you is just what you need to get you through tough times, when nothing else would. They don't have to say a word except "I love you " and "I care about what you are going through." The friends here are beautiful and you know that, whatever you are going through, you are wrapped tightly in red threads.

This makes my LO total 444, Now that's a pretty number, I think Ill just admire it for a while:D...No doubt it will be sometimes before I complete another LO anyway

It is the perfect #444. It made me cry and cry and cry. Please give your dad a big hug from me.

Thanks everyone for their congrats on my HOF. I was quite surprised and thrilled :). I just love that photo of Alex!

No surprises here. The only surprise is that you don't have more HOFs. You are a spectacular scrapper - beyond spectacular, even. Your gallery is end-to-end HOFs.

I had my hair cut into a concave bob yesterday and I was trying to take a photo of myself from arms length to show you all - but not as easy as it looks to take a photo of yourself like that and not come out looking very strange:eek::eek::eek:

All my pictures look strange. I am sure I am younger, prettier and thinner than the person in the pictures. Must be the camera angle.

I start out with a template that is 12x12, has guidelines separating the canvas into 9 sections, and has a text layer named Credits. As I work, I paste kit and font info into the text layer, which stays on the bottom of the layers and is never rasterized. When I finish journaling I copy and paste it into that same text layer, select and copy all text on the layer and then paste into the gallery upload window. Works great for me and it's easy to edit if I add other kits or elements. HTH

In CS, there is a notes tool. You can click on that an annotate your layout with all your notes. It is wonderful.

What if a serial killer made one and lured you to some forgotten canyon where he has his secret dungeon and torture chamber .... and no one can hear you scream!!!

this maybe the most quoted comment of all time and a delightful peek into the dark valley of Vallie's mind LOL.

DBC (drive by complaint)

So why is it when I loose something in this house, I am the only one looking for it. I ask if anyone has seen it, used it, missplaced it and all I get is the barely recognizable grunt of nope. Sometimes my son will launch himself into a long drawn out WHOPPER of a story about how he did not, nor would he ever, touch the item that I am looking for. I should probably look in his room. Not one of these guys will offer to help me look for what I desire to find either.

BUT----If one of these guys happens to lose something around here, all life in this household comes to a screetching halt...or at least mine does anyway because I am expected to drop everything and find their lost item.

Duh - you expected something else???????

Praying for you Raffie!

WHat is wrong with Raffie??????????

Leslie, are they crows or ravens? When we first moved to California, we kept seeing ravens and thinking they were the biggest crows we had ever seen in our lives. The crows in Oklahoma were quite a bit smaller than the ravens are. Plus the ravens make this terribly clicking, clucking sound -- drive me nuts when they sit on the fence. :annoyed:

Very Pretty conjunction of the Moon and Venus!!! If you've got clears skies tonight, go out and look. My pictures don't do it justice of course!! It has set in Montana now, but you might catch a glimpse further West and you could certainly see it tomorrow night too, although the moon will be 24 hours older. Downunders should get some pics and post them! It would be fun to compare!

Don't try it hand held! I did and came out fuzzy. I had to use the remote on the Nikon - even pushing on the shutter release gave the pics double vision! Turns out I spent way more time out in -2F weather trying to get it handheld than I would have if I had just hauled out the tripod in the first place!:doh:

Can I brag for a minute about my bald-headed baby?

I have never said anything to him about it, mostly because I am afraid it would make him stop, but anytime I see Andrew - even with all his friends around - he says, "I love you Mom." I adore him.

And he got his ACT scores - he scored off the charts. He had planned on taking it several times, but I think he will probably stop now.

And one last bit of good news-

The oldest daughter is in the final stages of being accepted into the phD program at MY ALMA MATER - University of South Carolina. They have offerred to pay for her education AND give her a stipend while she is there. That's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick! Right now she lives in Denver.

We call these Butcher Birds over here. They fight with the magpies.
What we call Butcher birds here are different to the currawong but perhaps related. There is a grey variety of butcher bird that has the shape of a small kookaburra, and a black and white variety which has lots more white on them than the currawong. They are also carnivorous(is that the right word for meat eating birds?) but less blatantly so, and are redeemed somewhat by their gorgeous melodic songs...in fact Dad had a family of butcher birds who would come visit him each day at the farm for the biscuits and crumbs he would feed them...they gave him lots of pleasure...he badly wanted them to go with him.
How are you eb? Getting your head around things yet?:hug:

WHat is wrong with Raffie??????????
Lynnie, here is raffie's post from a few days ago:
I am in shambles! I can't stop crying. My DH just came home early to tell me in person that the son of his best friend was dead. He is a Freshman in college and his Dad called to tell us that tomorrow when the body gets home they will begin to 'sit shiva' (can't spell) Maybe MsJessica can give us some details about this religous standard. Maybe I will PM her for advice. I have know this child since he was about 8 and he was such a great kid. His Dad was so proud of him and all that he did. We just googled to get the details since his dad was so broken up that he couldn't talk when he called. There is nothing on the web yet which leaves us to speculate and that can never help any situation. I don't know why I am writing this other than to say, CALL YOUR KIDS (or parents) tell them you love them so you will never have regrets. I can't believe he is gone,my heart is breaking and I can't imagine the pain his parents are in.

What a difference an hour makes............:hug:raffie

I used an action on that LO I just posted and some may wonder where I got it. Frankly, I couldn't remember, so I googled it.

http://www.atncentral.com/index.htm

It's a Photoshop Action Exchange. You can donate, but the actions are free.

Actions are just like a macro in Word or Excel. You record your "actions" to get a certain effect or result so you can replay it over and over. Some of you may be familiar with Atomic Cupcake who does actions mostly for scrapbooking - Burnt edges, Cracked paint, Frayed Fabric. I wouldn't know how to get some of these effects with out them. You can watch it step through dozens of steps to get the final result and wonder, "How did he/she EVER figure this all out?"

They are long and low, with a decent voice, but they aren't pleasant.

These look like our Magpies that raid smaller bird's nests, eat the eggs and kill the babies. They are considered "migratory birds" and are protected in Montana. They are EVERYWHERE (not in Ugly Town where there's not very many birds at all - too much pollution)!!! They sound like crows and will scare away ALL the other, more pleasant birds from the bird feeder!

Love the haircut, Inky -- I would love to have hair like that. I hear what you're saying, too, Sanra -- I have no idea what color my hair is under this dye -- haven't seen it naked in years.

You must be SO PROUD!!!
---------------

Does anybody remember the animated Streaking Granny I posted a long time ago. Seems we all got a kick out of it. Well Photobucket has deleted it and replaced it with an icon that says the image has "violated our terms of use policy." Now what about that cute little naked butt cartoon do they object to? Did one of you complain about the nudity? I've sent them a request to explain this, but haven't heard back yet! Weird!

Who said raven? You were right!

"White-winged Choughs are easily recognised but often mistaken for "crows"—a double mistake, as the birds most frequently called "crows" in Australia are actually ravens (see Australian Raven and Little Raven). The White-winged Chough is a large, black bird—at about 45 cm..."

Ok, the ones I hate most are the UBER noisy choughs, but I Googled them and it says they don't eat things. They live outside my classroom, have enormous families and live on food scraps from the students who eat in the courtyard.

It's the ravens I have seen being murderous then. They're nasty b@#$%$#s.

"How are you eb? Getting your head around things yet?"
HI EG - well I have had my first week of retirement. when I checked my bank to see if my payout had gone in I felt a bit funny but I seem to have ended up being so busy with things to do. It is just that the things are done at a slower pace and there are no deadlines. I miss not having my own car but I do love checking out here during the day at my leisure - all the best wishes has helped me. I think this thread has helped me cope emotionally with the retrenchment.

Fran, when I told people I was getting a MAC all the dedicated PC users filled my head with doom and gloom about how difficult it would be to change over, how hard it would be to get my head around all the differences and using PS etc etc. Well, I have had it for a few months and just love it. There are always so many people ready to answer questions if you get stuck. I am in the happy position of having a PC laptop and a desktop MAC, so have the best of both worlds. But I would never go back to a PC for my main computer now. Go for it girl!!!

Ugh! I have been awake since 4:30 am.....on a SATURDAY....I'm gonna be draggin' butt by 2 today! I want coffee, but if I make it now, the kids will wake up and I'm sooooo not ready to deal with them yet. *sigh*

I strapped on my rollerskates yesterday evening and took the kids to the next block east from our house where the new bike/exercise path is. It's 8 blocks or JUST shy of 1 mile from start to finish, plus the 1/4 mile from our house to the path....so I skated 2 1/2 miles yesterday. When we turned the corner to come home, the neighbor was in his garage and started laughing at me. Well not AT me, but he said I made him feel old. (He's about my age - and the father of the boy that's got a crush on Summer) We started reminiscing about skating rinks and such...it was kinda funny. The teenagers were just looking at us like we blew a gasket or something. Today, I can't cross my legs for the muscle spasms I get in my hips!  Definitely a great way to trim them up though, so we're gonna do it again today, and maybe go even further down to the lakefront park. I look like a complete idiot on skates but at this point I don't care. It's the only way I can keep up with the kids when they're on their bikes!

Nope...can't wait any longer...must have coffee...I'll just cross my fingers that they'll be nice enough to watch cartoons until mama gets some caffiene in her.

WE saw it - no pics... but it was so eerie... no clouds in the sky.. but not enough time to set up the tripod and camera...

Cool effect.

Wow, I love the "I love you Mom" part, that is worth 1000 scholarships
You have a lot to be proud of PQ, and please do brag, because it makes us proud grannies too!

BBL! :love1:

Good for you, Dixie!! I can't wait til spring hits here so we can be outside doing stuff like that. But it's gonna be awhile since we just got hit with over 6 inches of snow the other day! Oh well, I guess I'll have to resort to walking up the hill several times from sledding!

When I was about 40 rollerblades were the hot item to have. Shannon was out rollerblading and I thought, "I could do that." So I put on a pair of rollerblades and told her to come on, that we were going to rollerblade to her dance class....about a half a mile away.

The last 200 yards of this rollerblading adventure were all downhill. I swear to you, it seemed to me like every time those wheels made one revolution, my speed quadrupled. About halfway down the hill I thought, "By the time I get to the bottom of this hill I will be going 100mph. Then I am going to fall and it will probably kill me." But I did not know how to stop or slow down. So I threw myself onto the side of the road. I thought it would be better to fall in the dirt than on the pavement and better to fall at 25 mph than 100. I survived (obviously), but I was bruised and bloodied. Shannon was so busy laughing hysterically she was no help at all. When I got home Doug was no help because he was too busy getting out the camera - he wanted to capture the moment on film. (This was long before digital). No sympathy at my house. Never put on a pair of skates after that (except for with training wheels - I would put Andrew and Bia in the jogging stroller and skate while I pushed them around the block).

Are you a Mac user already... I have the 24 inch Mac... Leopard 10.5 I love it...

I switched from a PC laptop (vista) to the Mac 24 inch screen - I LOVE IT...

- I didn't go to the mac book... I wanted the big screen...

I love the Mac because the compute is built into the monitor... cool... so you have the monitor and the keyboard, and my wacom tablet...

love the set up...

oh, and Adobe will let you switch you software from PC to Mac... I can tell you how

No, I do not have a mac, but Andrew does. He loves it and it is so light. That is what I like about it - the weight. My days of being able to carry a laptop that weighs as much as my vacuum cleaner are over.

They're nasty b@#$%$#s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Raven#Distribution_and_habitat

Trivia: A group of crows is called a Murder of Crows. A group of ravens is called a Congress of Ravens or an Unkindness of Ravens.

Shawn put on his big boy pants again (amazingly he doesn't have any simpsons pants) and went to PT and OT all by himself!!!

Shawn is making such marvelous progress. It seems as though you have been dealing with this forever and with such cheer and fortitude. Brenda, you are a champ, and so is Shawn.

ok now I know I am miles behind, but someone please explain this to me...

what new granny room? why have we moved? did we break something? Is Margie cross with us?...doesn't she know not to mess with us grannies:p...boy when I see her in May I will tell her not to play with us:annoyed::annoyed::annoyed:

I think the short explanation is that Margie won the lottery and bought us a brand new house, or we got put on one of those television shows about people whose houses needed a makeover and we ended up with a lovely huge mansion.

Our original home was falling down around our ears and bits and pieces were falling off and landing all over the rest of the site and breaking things. She took loads and loads of time, made sure that Kay's original poem was carefully packed up and moved properly, and the last bunch of posts. Then she preserved the original thread as the longest thread in the history of the world.... We can visit there with reverence and awe any time.

Speaking of things that are going on .... I am still taking care of my grandson, Mark. Gabby can attest to the fact that it is quite a full-time job. I spend half my time ferrying him around to Dr. and Therapy appointments and the rest of the time making sure he is getting his school work done. Plus he is quite a handful at home. I fall asleep exhausted every night, and I have only had him for three months... The only consolation is that he is WORTH IT!!

Thursday night I popped something in my knee. I have had issues with it for a long time, at least since the 70s. It hasn't happened for a long time though. Something pops in my knee and it locks up and it is very very painful to move anything anywhere in my body. It hurts so much I see stars. Anyway - I was kneeling down (I have since tattooed IDIOT on my forehead in reverse so I can read it in a mirror and remind myself) and it popped out. It hurt so much and only Mark was there. After a few minutes and being forbidden to, Mark went and got James. We sent Mark up to his room while I swore (darn, dang, heck, oh my!) and after about 45 minutes, we got it back in. Then Brian and James helped move me onto the couch, and it popped out AGAIN. So, we massaged it back in and I've not been able to do much since then. Very very painful.

Thanks scamp for letting everyone know.

Scamp and I were chatting when we got the news.

We were seconds away from booking our flight when the electricity went off. Had to start over again and got flights $400 cheaper.
