I like Lauren's method, but in PSE it takes a bit of tweaking.
Here's the link

Sinc ethe Brush doesn't have the option to rotate randomly in PSE, I just make the Spacing a lot higher and do one pass, then in the More Options change the Angle and do another pass, and repeat until I get a full tear that looks fairly random.

This one also works in PSE with similar adjustments

These assume familiarity wtih the software. As you've seen, the easier methods are often not as realistic.

If you have any questions on translating them, keep posting ehre and we'll walk you through it.

In my PSE Intro class I have two methods that I love for a good edge too, though not as good as the two above. Easier and usually adequate unless you have a close-up or large torn edge. Lots of other good stuff too.

Both URLs took me to the same page. Please, could you repost the URL for the second method?

Ooops! Try this one:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_tornedges-advanced.shtml

They're both in the Tutorials section with a few other methods as well. Also look at the Antique/Distressed Paper tutorial

Holler with any questions, lots of people here to help
