Are you ready for the next Graphically Challenged? :yahoo:
Ok, so last month was an easy one, this one will be a little trickier!
This months challenge is to create a layout with the photo filling the entire page AND use a creative photo editing technique on the photo.
To give you an idea of what I mean I have done a tutorial on Cross Processing in photoshop (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/freebies/Robyn/CrossProcessingInPhotoshop.pdf).
Hopefully those of you using other software may be able to replicate the effect. It is a bit of a tricky tutorial, so if you are unable to manage it feel free to use a different CREATIVE photo editing technique to make your photo POP.
The Rules
You must use a DSP product (or lots and lots of products) in your layout. This can be store purchased, freebies, etc.
You must have your layout in the Graphically Challenged with Robyn (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=6698) gallery by midnight on the 31st of March in order to be eligible for the drawing.
You must link back in this thread, so that I can grab a random winner from this thread.
What can you win?
One person will be randomly chosen at the end of the month and will receive a $3.99 store coupon!
Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with! Lets get blending!! You can get your Graphically Challenged Flair Here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36564)!

Falling Creek Falls (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=306053)
Ok, I didn't do cross processing - instead I did a infared conversion and a new way of sharpening black and whites that I learned..
I first worked with the photo in camera raw to pull out the colors as much as possible.
Then a B & W conversion
Then I used Scott Kelby's Infared Conversion - using the Color Balance in the CS4 new Adjustment panel.
Added a mask and painted with white.. on the water falls to bring out those highlights.
Painted with white (or he calls it painting with LIGHT) on the falls
Sharpened using Filters > high pass (.6)
then a blend mode of Luminosity
Ok a had a photo I could use at this point.
The started a new document to build a layout using
Lauren Bavin's Blended Memory Overlays. This of couse required Blend modes on all four layers to get these results.
Comments are welcome, please...

I so wish I could do it for you! I don't even have PSP let alone know how to use it. I must have a play in PSE and see if you can do Cross Processing in there.

Gosh I know PSE WAY better than CS4 (which is all I use now)... But I did my best to cross process a photo in PSE - that I had done in CS4.
Without the curves channels... it's pretty hard..
The rest of the process is pretty easy the fill and the levels adjustments...
but the first part - the separated red, blue green input/output channels.. I found pretty hard to accomplish, unless you knew EXACTLY what the numbers needed to be in levels...
maybe you found another way around, hope so..

That Mr. Google is pretty darn smart.

This is something I want to try, I love the Graphically Challenges - I learn so much from them:) Going to find a cool photo to work with.

Here is one from me. I used a curves adjustment layer, adjusted contrast and brightness and blended a color layer that was orangish. The photo is much richer than what I started with! The gallery shot doesn't look as good as the original because it compressed so much.

Here is how I interpreted the tut into PSP. It is mostly the same as PS really.
Start with a copy of photo
Right-click on layer go to: New Adjustment layer-curves
You'll have to adjust the channels individually since we don't have a cross-processing preset.
Under the channels drop-down menu, go to red, then green, then blue and adjust
create new raster layer and fill with desired color
go to that layers properties and change blend mode to multiply and reduce opacity
right-click on image layer and go to: new adjustment layer -levels
Adjust levels, can do individual colors or RGB. Tutorial suggests sliding the white end closer to the gray/black end
right-click image layer and go to new adjustment layer -brightness/contrast
increase both brightness and contrast
ETA: Done in PSP X2, but I think it can be done in earlier versions too.
ETA (again): if you don't want to do a new adjustment layer, you can always just go to the 'adjust' menu (up at the top) and under 'brightness/contrast' you can choose to change the curves, levels, or brightness and contrast of the image. It will change it directly on the image, without a new layer. That isn't as easy to change things back, but can be done.

I also just wanted to make mention that every photo will react differently to the techniques in the tutorial. So it is important to know that you may need to adjust the curves differently from one photo to the next to get a similar effect. This is also why I did not provide exact settings as what worked for my photo, will not likely work on yours, so it is a matter of trial and error to a large degree.
If you want any CC on your photo that you have used the technique on just let me know and I will see if I can help you out to get the effect you wish to achieve. If the photo is say, too green, it may just be a case of removing some green, and adding some red.
You can enhance it further by adding additional adjustment layers or even duplicating the photo layer and experimenting with the blend modes and opacity on the top layer.
The tutorial is now also in the DSU tutorials section (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/ps_cross%20processing/ps_crossprocess.shtml), if you ever need to refer back to it and can't find it in the forums.

I have a question Robyn on this Cross Processing. I know each photo will be different but are there certain colors that should be dominate in Cross Processing?
It really does depend on the photo, the colours and the lighting conditions in the photo. Cross processing in the traditional format is entirely unpredictable so there is no set format for it. Having said that, I have seen many with a blue bias and some with a green bias, which looks great on landscape, but not so great on portraits. My SIL had some cross processed wedding photos which looked AMAZING. her bridesmaids dresses and flowers were a lovely pink colour and the cross processed images were with a blue cast to them and they were in a cityscape style photo. The results really were stunning.
The main thing that is consistent with cross processed photos is the bleached look to it, with the overblown highlights and dark shadows with some kind of colour cast. For a portrait I would not likely give it too much of a green cast as it just doesn't look right, but blue or yellow casts look really effective.
I found this info on wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_processing
Characteristics
Color cross processed photographs are often characterized by unnatural colors and high contrast. The results of cross processing differ from case to case, as the results are determined by many factors such as the make and type of the film used, the amount of light exposed onto the film and the chemical used to develop the film.
Cross processing effects can be simulated in digital photography by a number of techniques involving the manipulation of contrast/brightness, hue/saturation and curves in image editors such as Adobe Photoshop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Photoshop) or GIMP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP); however, they lack the unpredictable nature of regular cross processed images.
Hope this helps! ;-)

I tried to follow the tut in my Paint shop Pro programme and this is the result. Got no idea if this looks "cross processed" or not but I quite like the dramatic look of it. Thanks Robyn, Ill keep working on the tut:)

Here's my go for the month. Using CS2, I did NOT have the Cross Processing option, but played with all the other techniques Robyn had in her tutorial and came up with this:

No cross processing in your sense but great fun to do and now I might go back and [in my way] merge/blend some overlays etc.

I agree, there is some amazing layouts in that gallery, so many very striking ones! Love it! Thankfully.. I don't have to pick a winner, since it is a random draw. Otherwise I would so be in for it! LOL
DET Contest is hard enough to vote on! LOL To pick just one....

Here is another from me - it has nothing to do with cross processing but I wanted to try and do a cartoon style effect on these Pink photos that my son took at her concert.
I also recoloured the background and applied a gradient.

I followed the tutorial on Cross Processing as well as I could in PSP, and just kept tweaking. The right side, once I cropped the photo to my satisfaction, was very white so I blended it with a background which just happened to be decorated in just the right places. The other photos I converted to b&W and used Virtual Photographer's "Fashion" filter for visual impact:

So I have PSE so I wasn't able to follow the tutorial, but I did play with the photo Adjust Color Curves under the Enhance Menu made the shadows darker and only slightly adjusted the contrast, brightness and highlights. I then applied a blue filter to the photo at 65% opacity .

I wasn't going to do this challenge, mainly because I don't have the patience I should to transpose the tutorial over to PSE! LOL! So I cheated a little....
Thanks for looking!
