Okay, here is your assignment: First - check out the birthday kits (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=41_66_67) already in the store, then tell me what is missing!

I'd like to use a color scheme that hasn't been used for birthday - but one that you can definitely use, and I'd like to create kit bits that maybe haven't already been included in birthday kits. So I know that's a tall order, but maybe as you look through them all you'll find something lacking, or remember some element you wanted for a birthday layout that you couldn't find. I'm sure I'll need to add some traditional things, but I'd really like to pop in those bits you wanted but aren't in the store already.

Can we do this? I think it will be fun! I hope you don't mind having the theme assigned already!

I just took all my DD's birthday pics today! She just turned 3, so timing couldn't be better! It may be tomorrow before I have any ideas, but I'll be back!

Oh yeah I'm so excited. I will take a look at the kits. I have an idea but I will check the store first. I know that some people may be looking for birthday kits for a girl; but, can we make it for both boys and girls. My 2 year old sons birthday is coming up and I plan on having loads of pics. He's going to be into opening presents for the first time this year! I'll be back for ideas!

k so I just went through the kits. I definitely have some ideas but first I have to see the color scheme. I'm thinking bright but who knows, you never know where it will go.

Oh I'm so glad you said bright! :yahoo: I tend toward brights with DS Ben. Since that is our personality.

Here's my idea. We did my son's first birthday theme "Sesame Street & Rubber Ducky". My husband loves the sesame street Ernie (I think it was him) who sang the rubber ducky song. Do you remember that? Well, we sing it to our son all the time. I still need to scrap those birthday pictures. The plate is really blurry because of the resolution - sorry. But, you get the gist.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/data/6770/Rubber-Ducky.jpg

I was also thinking of a chocolate theme? My husband loves chocolate and his birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. But, don't have a color theme for that yet.

Scrappy Momma, I love those colors. And they still go well for girls because they are bright. We just painted my step daughters room that bright green. I love the idea of chocolate theme too. What pictures don't go well with brown.

Scrappy Mama

OK here's the chocolate theme. Makes me hungry just looking at it.

I have a question Z. Is it ok to be posting things that are copyrighted to swatches? Like Hershey's and Sesame street? I don't want to open a can of copyrighted worms but I was just curious, for future reference.

OK I see another addiction. Didn't know color swatches were so much fun!

I've been looking around my house for birthday and found this. There might be something in the store already. I don't remember. But, this is what I came up with.

My little one is sick and is now up. So, I will sign off for now. And give someone else a chance to have fun!!!

Here's a swatch from me. The pic is from my younger DD's birthday last year. She turned three and insisted on a Monsters Inc. party. I think the colors would work for a boy or a girl.

I don't think I pulled the colors out quite right this time. I ran it through Kuler and it kept choosing her skin or the floor, so I did it myself. Anyhow, here you go:

It's hard to say that anything is lacking. If anything maybe yellow, green and orange. And there are lots of bright colors so maybe toned down a bit or even grunged up. I think we could use more stickers and doodles. And you know how on birthday cards you always see cute little cartoon animals (kwim?) wishing you a happy day? Like a bear or a turtle or... That could be cute... or not, i don't know.

I agree-- bold, primary colors would be great for a birthday kit! Hmmmm. . . I'll have to go look and see if I can something to make a color swatch from hehe

I'd also like word art that said "old enough to know better!"

I love all the colors submitted so far, though I must admit I will find the colors in the "chocolate theme" difficult to scrap with.
I guess most of us are thinking kids birthdays, which is fine by me--I have those :D.
Bright colors are fun and can be versatile.
We are Sesame Street people too (Ernie is a fav here as well!)

To answer the Hershey's question - you're not selling the image or anything, so no problem posting it. We just can't use copyrighted images and verbage in the kits themselves. The colors are fine.

I think brights are fine as long as we have some neutrals or muted colors to go with them. All brights make for a kit that would overpower the photos.

So far I like the apple jacks one above the best - but I know that's because blues and greens are my favorite colors, so I'll wait for a few more and see what we get!

When my niece was three, she had little finger puppets of Bert and Ernie that she carried around the house. I kept asking her which one was Bernie and which one was Ert. She corrected me every time. Finally, on the day before we were to leave, I got her. I said, "Which one is that, Bernie?" and she said, "No, Ert." I about fell on the floor laughing.

I always try to catch my daughter out on Josh and Drake now, but she corrects me every time.....

If you have access to CS3 - then you automatically get access to www.kuler.adobe.com

using you adobe sign on id..

In CS4 - kuler is built into the program

Kuler is gives you the ability to do several things all related to color
You can pick from current designer themes - like using key words say "coffee, or Sesame street..

Or you can choose you own colors from scratch, or by, choosing one main color, and then it will pick color themes from that which you can upload and use as color swatches. And, if you have a mac Mr. Kuhler is a desktop widget...

Or the coolest part is, you can upload your own photo. and based on that photo, Kuler will pick several themes from that photo..

You can save that theme and upload it - or as in the case of CS4.. it's there for you to work with..

So, I think Mr. Kuler is one cool dude.

Oh, he not only gives you the colors so you can see them, but the RGB codes, the hex codes, the CMYK values... the ... any way you want your color swatches..

he's cool

Wow, if he cuts grass and does the dishes I want to marry him! lol....

ON the other hand, Josh and Drake are kinda cute....

KIDDING! They are or were teens who had their own program, called Drake & Josh - it's a Nickleodeon show. Josh was straight laced who got good grades but had problems socializing, and his stepbrother Drake was a cool kid who played guitar and sang in a band and always got all the girls. They had an evil little sister named Megan who grew up to be ICarly, same station.

Can I see a few more color schemes before I choose? Maybe Mr. Kuler would play with something for me? I don't have PSCS3 or 4.....$$$$ I give away these kits, remember? lol....

And do you all think we can make it birthday enough? I'd like to use it for something, even if we don't go bday on it, stitchmich!

Well I think as long as we use lots of white like in the image, we could go with that stars one?

If I use the larger squares as the "main" colors, with the white, I can poke in a teensy bit of the others here and there, so they don't really overwhelm but help make it a bit festive.
I still want to use that ivory and green, red, and tangerine one sometime. I'll think on that a bit too.

So let's see if I can do this! Here we go!

There were so many colors to choose from, I wasn't sure which to pull out. I like the "star" theme... and several of the stars have patterns that would make a good paper... the green with yellow dots, the purple swirly one and I like the bottom left one too.
You know in your Cosmic Cool kit there is a white paper with different colored swirls? Something similar to that would be cool because you could use lots of colors in it but keep the white background.

Oh, I likey!

What about a white background with either little stars, squares or circles (none too little) with a different thin border color around them?

I like the idea of a stripe one...what about white (?) with narrow strips of the other colors spaced around...like 1/2in white, narrow strip of color, narrow strip of white, narrow strip of color, 1/2in white, etc....?

Glitter sounds awesome too, but not huge splots of it..just small scatters here and there.

OK, I love those colors! Love the confetti streamers idea, curly ribbons like that one picture that was put up for the colors (of course, that will be more of an element!) I think we could do the stars too on a background and then a couple of simple backgrounds, mostly one color. And since this kit will be brights, I'm thinking not so much grunge!

I'm still waking up (bad night as I have kids with fevers again) so if I'm rambling and not making sense I apologize!

Okay, bludnfl003 (can we call you something I can spell? lol) asked for a deeper purple background with the lighter purple showing through. I embossed it.

Stitchmich mentioned my cosmic (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&-----=ba831ebcd43b706c3367dc400efa60d2&keyword=cosmic+elizabeth) papers - I really really love those too! So I did one in the style of that.

I really wanted to stay away from the yellow and orange except in tiny tiny bits, because there is already a great kit in the store with blue, turquoise, yellow, and orange for birthday. It was a pass the pixel for 2006.

So... do you think we can go a little whimsical or doodly with this? Something here seems kind of light and airy, and I think realistic elements might weigh it down unless they have an air of magic or fancy - like combining a real object with something make believe - does that make sense? Put your thinking caps on, suggest away, and let's see if we can make this inventive and imaginitive but useful!

See - that's the kind of whimsy I mean we should do for this - assuming I can pull it off - I think it will be very cool!

Love the colours!

What about a checkerboard background with all the colours? I always seem to request this in these design threads, but I think it would be perfect for this type of fun kit. The square need to be a little off kilter (not perfect and straight in other words).

Elisabeth

Sounds cute, Hannah, I wonder if I should do an add on pack for this one. If we don't come up with enough element suggestions I could do another background though. I like that idea.

I love this! I agree with you on the light and whimsical thing. I would love to see doodles.
Maybe to present it as a birthday kit it needs wordart... not necessarily "Happy Birthday", but "Celebrate" or "Another Year" or a set of numbers to use for which birthday it is.
Then maybe the dangly stars could hang from the top and you could add some doodly candles or doodly presents?
And a frame to match the swirlies in that top paper.

Yeah! the two kits will coordinate! Love when you can have 2 designers with similar colors, that way you get the different styles, but they still work together!

I keep forgetting to say, but I love the name "It'Z Your Birthday!" lol.....

Love it too! I don't think we will need to many other choices!

What if you made them kind of like charms. Would that be whimsy enough? Then you could do some other charms, numbers, candles, balloons that could be hung for the stars like a charm bracelet! You could also do the curly ribbons and that could hang too! If that's not whimsy enough, maybe you could give me a little more of an idea.

Gorgeous, gorgeous backgrounds! Love them!

Maybe word art that says "It's your day!" or something to that effect. . . it could be written across "happy birthday," or not.

Maybe a big doodled cheshire cat smile? Not sure about that. . .

I do love that swirl on the white paper-- would love to see more of that! Maybe a long stamped border?

How about a scattering of the confetti... instead of glitter scatter - make your's confetti scatter.

Z the real name is amanda if that helps, I know my user name is actually really crazy to understand, but its shortened for blue dolphi.....anyways here are some element suggestions I wrote down at the begining of the happy birthday theme before you said whimsy/magic-y like:
multcolored pleated streamer
happy birthday word art, or some kind of word art for a birthday
noise makers (didn't see any in the othr kits in the store, and I LOVE noise makers)
ballons like they sell at party stores, the big helium ballons, not the ones we all blow up at home.

Oh and that swirl on the white paper...FABULOUS. Maybe that swirl could be an overlay as well. It's really pretty
All the other ideas are awsome as well, looks like it might be hard to choose

I like that you could put the number of stars for the age. Very cute!

Could you do a matching set of candles in different numbers? You know what I mean? Those candles that are shaped like a number? That would be a neat set, but I know it couldn't be part of this kit. . .

As far as this kit goes. . . a doodley (is that a word?) cake would be cute. Also a doodley present and maybe card too.

Now this kit needs more glitter! maybe the shiny confetti style, you could do more stars or any other shape, like party hats, balloons, etc... Or even a combination! I could see where you might have problems even though I didn't. When I look real close, I think it might be the purple dot behind it that confuses things! Of course, it may be too difficult to change, in which case, I think it would be OK as is!

If the cupcake journal mat doesn't work (or even if it does!) how 'bout one of those gift tags? Okay! I'm finally back to the computer, which took one look at me and said, "Wow, I thought you maybe left town or something." It hadn't seen me all day.

I'm exhausted. But I got a lot accomplished. When we dropped a truckload of stuff off at Goodwill, the man quipped, "Were the people home when you took all this stuff?"

So yes, I did start a checkered background yesterday, but it needs more work. Not sure how long I can stay awake but I'm gonna try to get a little bit done.

Yeah, ya gotta keep picking on me for a little longer, pinky! And thanks for the suggestions or re-suggestions everyone!

OK, did my job and made a suggestion. Now I can share the news! Looks like I'm gonna be packing soon myself. DH has been offered a job in Anchorage, Alaska (home, back home, we get to go home, YEAH! - sorry for shouting)

Oh Lisa I hope they are better soon!

Okay, here is:
Blue with swirls for sueya - but tossing in pinky's comment about the dots (though I didn't want to use yellow and green, seemed too bright). Also Just-pjs' request for narrow stripes on white with a couple of threads of glitter for Caro.

Oh and I know y'all said no grunge, but this is just a dusting.... lol. It looked too clean; I didn't like it so clean and bright, hurt my eyes!

I'm sorry - honestly I have been too exhausted this week after moving furniture and boxes all week that I just could not focus on desiging. And today my hospital job was eliminated. I don't mind so much; I had wanted to stay until June, but the downsizing got me first. They will run it on two supervisors instead of three for my shift - and the other two are full time. It's better that it was me.

My boss there has been the very best boss I've ever worked for (along with Margie and Amanda here of course) and I will miss her guidance and business sense. Her husband was one of the ones chosen for the downsize too though, so I felt way worse for them than losing my few little hours a week. More dedicated employees you would not find than they. And then for her to have to turn around after his layoff and let go some of her own people, well, that had to be tough. I have so much respect for her.

Things are rough out there, but I am hopeful for economic recovery soon. I am so glad to have scrapping - my escape to take me away from all the bad dreams that are real life, lol! And the lot of you as friends to yammer on to about junk when I have a day like this. Thanks to all of you for being here at DSP and "listening" when I need you!

If anyone knows what that is like, it is me! I'm glad that it was not essential income and that you can feel positive and hopeful! And if you look on that positive side: now you have more time for designing and packing!

Elisabeth
03-11-2009, 10:09 PM
Well, it was my essential income! We'll survive for just the little while until the move and then I'll look for work there, maybe just fewer groceries in the meantime, lol. I think it will all work out in good time. I'm hoping my daughter won't be too disappointed at giving up gymnastics when this term is over. We can hunt down a new gym after the move if she wants to take it up again after the summer. She usually stops over the summer anyway; this will just be a few months early. And I always HATE going, because my dad used to go with us, and it's always been hard to go to that building and sit in there since he died. Although I've gotten better.

I tried to do some designing tonight but I am just too tired. We have really gotten a lot done this week, but I've hurt my back somehow and so tomorrow we're taking the day off from moving boxes! I have plenty to sort and throw away though, so I'll still be busy, but maybe not so tired tomorrow night!

JenniferG

Oh Z I'm so sorry to hear about that! Hope you find an equally wonderful job when you're all settled in at the new place.

Moving is such a pain. I know! I move almost EVERY year... and we'll be moving in August...hopefully to a house...rent to own. The market out here is pretty nice for us first time home buyers, and people are eager to rent out their homes, too. And I'm so sick and tired of living in apartments I could puke! I've lived in apartments for more than half my life!

Elisabeth
03-11-2009, 10:36 PM
Oh Jennifer that's thrilling news! Yes, I hope we can sell ours here and I wish I could take advantage of the market to buy something there soon, but I bet that's a catch 22.

AT least with moving so much you will have already thrown out most of what you need to. We are terrible pack rats and have been in this house over 12 years. So it's painful, and I don't see a clear spot yet!

Whew! Thanks, everybody. I hope things will work out, too.

I got my sister (the slave driver) off to the airport tonight with her whip in tow. We got a lot done; I still have a lot to do but I will continue to work on it a little each day. I've just been way too tired this week (under the whip) to sit and work on anything at night, and today is no different, but I will get back in design gear sometime this weekend.

So my daughter doesn't seem devastated that tomorrow is her last gymnastics session - at least until we move. I told her after we move we'll investigate all the activities available and she can pick one then. Like I said, she has enjoyed gymnastics but has not shown any particular talent for it. What she really needs is drama classes - at THAT she would make Ingrid Bergman proud.

Z, That is OK you took some time off!! I was busy with my DET layout! Should I be offering you bribes? LOL!!

Elisabeth
03-14-2009, 04:08 PM
Bribes? Does that mean you're showing up here Monday ready to work? I accept! hee hee....

I got a massive amount done in my daughter's room today! She's in a receptive mood to donating a lot of the things she doesn't play with. In some cases I still have the boxes; goodwill is going to get a big treat Monday! She had way too much to keep her room clean herself anyway. I will be sad to see some of it go but I will forget it before long. Some of it though, I don't even recognize or remember where it came from.

I can't do the garage sale thing and watch things walk away - I have to dump them off at goodwill or some other donate place. I'm too sentimental. But we HAVE to get shed of some of this baggage! Purge, purge, purge..... I hate it but I will be so glad when I am done.

We are keeping some things for my niece's baby girl - so that will be money saved later and I'll be glad we did.

Oh - and I found three big dolls - not to play with dolls, collectible ones - that I can mail to Linda Rectin who is a collector! I have had one of them for about 25 years; it is a Spanish dancer doll that an old boyfriend sent me from Spain when he was on float (Marine corps). I've always just kept it in the shipping box so Linda will get it like new. The other two are Baby Chrissys from the early 1970s - anyone remember those? These are the big fat ones that actually can wear childrens' clothes. I got them at thrift stores and never cleaned them up properly, but they are still cute and she wants them.

Enough rambling about my day - hope you are all having a great weekend! I'll be back tonight and see if I can't work up some of your suggestions for the add ons!!!!

just-pjz
03-14-2009, 05:43 PM

I'm the same way..way too sentimental to nickel and dime stuff away at a yard sale.

so, is our little B-Day page kit done? I lost count of the items.

Elisabeth
03-15-2009, 01:37 AM
Right, main kit is done - or, I should say, 12 pieces are done. Sometimes when I work on an add on at the same time, I mix them up to make them work better together. So, yes, chances are it's done, unless I think something from the aop will scrap better with the kit or vice versa. I prolly won't mess with it though, and in any case those whose suggestions I use will get all of it anyway.

Okay then - I have done two more bgs. Hannah suggested the checkerboard one, but the other is just my dark version of the white swirly one. Now, I will be wanting to do some lightening up for the elements. I will do the wonky cake when we get to those. Prolly ought to stick in one more bg - but should it be mostly white or would you rather have one of the colors?

OH, How about a white background with a spray/spatter of the other colors. They could be in stripes with one color kind of bleeding over in the next color. Kind of like you did the grunge on the striped paper and kind of like the pattern when people are painting, and they use a roller----what lands on your hand. Does this make any sense at all??

Okay, I did the purple bg with a few stars and dots on it, and I loved it, but when I layered it with the other two, it looked like it was screaming!!! So I changed the gradient layer to the blue and teal. I think it's a good addition to the kit for use with boys.

I LOVE that third background and the cupcake stack! Darling!

And I like the idea of an invitation-- maybe just a card with a hat and crossed noisemakers in one corner? So it can easily be used for journaling?

And a pinata! Oh, fun! We have pinatas at most of our birthday parties (I like it best in the summer when the parties are outside and the pinata is hung from a tree, instead of suspended from one end of a broom, with a parent at the other end;))

An invitation sounds great.

It may be too similiar-kinda..but I still like my idea way back somewhere about a gift tag---they fold like a card, are usually square, colored/printed on the face side, blank on the inside, and you usually stick them on a gift and use them for the "to" and "from"?!?? We could use it for journaling or the like. *shrug*

Maybe a ribbon? I know the kit has the little bunch of curly ribbon, so maybe one to stick 'em to.

Oh, by the way, the "birthday" and "celebrate" are designed so that you can add a large number over the words and use for any birthday. You know, like put a big "6" in the middle, or whatever.

Happy Birthday, Amanda! Great timing :) You should definitely get yourself in a photo. We want to see you featured in a page with this kit.

Thanks, I have to say that I will definitely be getting a picture of myself for this kit. I try to avoid pictures because my pictures make me look like the pillbury dough boy. literally..

Okay, I only made one switch - so the invite would be in the main kit and there would be frames in each.

I'll send out the pm in just a few minutes with the link for those whose suggestions I used. There were a lot this time; hope I don't miss anyone!

Oh, and I couldn't use the cute name!! There was one already too close to it in the store.

Oh - those are old backpacks I never put in from an old challenge, sorry to tease! The kit they go with is in the store; has been for a couple of years.

You can see it all together here (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=elizabeth+birthday+stickers), and it's on sale today!

New ones not in yet, sorry!

Yes, let's get this puppy on the road again, as far as a new kit. I'll start a new thread; be gathering your color schemes!
