Thanks for visiting my blog! Here's the link to the pdf file. Be sure to download right away, as I will remove the link when I put next week's up. But don't worry, the tutorial will still be available on the blog if you missed it. :D

Christine, thanks for this tutorial!

Question: In the final picture, I can understand how the dodge and burn tools help with shadows and highlights... but how do you make the little bend in the lower right? It almost looks like the paper is "bowing" a bit?

Am I making sense?

Christine

Yes I just warped it a little bit, you don't have to though, it just depends on if you want it flat or not.

Ted

Ah okay!

At risk of sounding completely idiotic... how does one warp something? Which tool would I use?

And if this is bothersome, or you're going to have another tutorial with this, then ignore my question(s)! :)

Christine
03-12-2009, 03:37 PM
LOL you can use either the warp tool (part of transform) or the liquify tool

Ted
03-12-2009, 03:44 PM
Ah! Okay, so I would hit CTRL-T and then would Warp Tool be one of the buttons on top?

(I'm at work; perhaps I should just wait 'til I get home and try it, eh?) ;)

In any case, thanks for the tutorial! :)

I seriously just LOVE your tutorials! You keep hitting on things that I've been wanting to learn, so thank you!

I can't wait till later when I can try this out!

And Ted, you are cracking me up! I am so with you! I feel like I ask so many questions too! But just think that when you ask the question you're saving me from having to! LOL!

Christy,

I'm glad I can be of service!

I'm just looking forward to learning all these things so that I can use my Camtasia software to create VIDEO tutorials. :) For me, that's really fun! :)

What I LOVE about the designers here is that NONE of them lose patience with our questions. They're just awesome. :)

(I can't say the same about me with my 20 third-graders!)

I agree with you there! I get a little impatient when I've given the same directions 10 times, and there is STILL someone who "didn't hear" me! ("Get out your science books... you need your science book.... do you have your science book?" 5 second later someone asks, "What book do we need?")

I love this tip, by the way! I will have to try that way of rotating the corner (if it will work in pse, that is). It looks much easier than the way I do it!

Thanks for the tutorial!

Now to be able to get time to open my new PS4. I've had it loaded for 2 weeks now but too tired to do any scrapping.

:yahoo: Oh and by the way, kiddo #2 is due in November! :yahoo:

It does work in pse! I just tried it out. To change the rotation point, there is a little icon in the top toolbar once you are in free transform. It looks like nine little boxes in a grid. The center one is automatically selected, but you can click on any of the others.

YAY! Thanks, Lisa! I didn't even realize this was feasible in Elements. Thank you so much.

And Christine . . . thanks for the tut! I hope to try it out soon. Your tuts are the greatest!

Well, Christine, I gave it my best shot...

March Digital Swap - F... (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=307583)

I tried a highlight with the dodge tool, but it just didn't look as realistic or "muted"... it looked too much like a white line. :( I even tried lowering the opacity.

If you're ever so inclined, I'd LOVE to see a tutorial on that...

No pressure or anything! ;)

Question for elements people

It doesn't appear that I have a warp tool. What can I use instead? Any work arounds?

idtwinmom

No, not really! That is why I never really did folds with PSE! Warps and Paths just don't exist there!

You might try a lot more Burn and Dodge, but the best you will do is create the illusion of a shadow.

I am not sure what highlight you started with but my bet is it was too high. Think LOW like 5-20%, especially on the dodge.

Or you can just have a flat fold, instead of a curved one.

Thanks so much, Christine! :)

Also, I would imagine the TEXTURE of the paper has something to do with it? In your tutorial, the paper seemed smooth, without much texture.

Mine was with texture. I wonder if that could make it harder to show a "highlight"?

I'll keep playing. :)

I really don't know of any, but there is the distort that you can play around with under Transform and there's always the Filters - Distort to play around with too. I'm still trying to figure out how to do a scrunched up ribbon and have been trying different filters in distort . . . no luck yet though! I let you know if I figure something out though.

I am copying this here, in case anyone else has a question on it.

The thing you have to remember is especially on papers, they are NOT shiny, so highlights and shadows are going to be slight, just enough to give the sense of depth. you also should try the different highlight/midtones/shadows modes in your option bar. You get different looks even on the same paper by changing that. If you want to experiment. Take a mostly solid dark paper, make your brush large-ish. Use the same settings for everything EXCEPT highlight/midtone/shadow. Do a stroke of each, then repeat on a medium and a light paper. Maybe bump up the % to 50 or so, that way the effect will be more pronounced. This will help you get a feel for the different looks that you get. Try with both dodge and burn.

Christine, thanks very much for such a thorough response. :)

Follow-up question: When I'm using the dodge tool to "highlight" or give the illusion of depth, do I want to go from back to forward, or from side-to-side with it?

For Attempt 2, what I did was just sort of "brush" it on with my mouse from the edge of the paper to the back of the paper curl. It was at 5% exposure if I remember correctly.

I'm wondering if I should use my Wacom instead of my mouse.

Also, what I noticed helped was simply adjusting the drop shadow to be a bit larger... not the normal 5 pixels. That seemed to help. I think I also increased the spread a bit.

The warp was another thing altogether! I tried it and found that I was "pulling away" the corner layer from the rest of the paper!

Wacom or mouse either one. I use my mouse but I also draw with my mouse and only use my pen when I want a scribbled look. direction doesn't matter so much as far as the application, (If you have a low exposure you can't see the direction that you brushed anyway cuz it should blend) but direction of the highlight/shadow is determined by your light source so keep that in mind. Yes warping is an acquired skill and the only way to get good at it, is to practice, practice, practice.

Thanks!

Another question (are you getting sick of them yet?) ;)

Is there a way to set up the warp "grid" to have more squares and thereby have a bit finer control of the warp? I think mine just has like 9 or 12 squares within the grid.
