All, I just made our hotel reservations. The reservations representative at the 800 # was very nice and gave us the same rate for Thursday as for Friday and Saturday, but that is on a case-by-case and space available basis, so if you are coming early or staying late you might want to think about making your reservations soon.

Updated to here!

Also a note about the hotel. I put 15 rooms in the group. I'm wondering if that is enough? I edited the top post with an * next to the names of people who I think will be at the hotel so I can keep track a little easier.

Kathleen - I plan to attend. The only thing that would hold up would be if my daughter had a game that day. I'd like to participate in the Friday night event if you have one as well. I am really looking forward to meeting you, Nicole, and other digi-scrappers from the DSM area.

Great! I added your name above.

I'm excited to meet some more local scrappers too! How old is your daughter, and what sports is she into? Our daughter is 4, so we haven't quite hit the age of the kid shuffle on the weekends yet!

I have two girls, Keira will be 3 in June and Alyssa will be 6 in May. We haven't done any sports with the girls yet, so t-ball with Alyssa will be our first. She's pretty excited. We're in the Bondurant school district. They don't have the schedules out yet, but I know that the games go into the month of June, and a lot of saturday's. I'm really going to try to make it!
Maybe I missed it, but do you know what time you'll start and end the crop?
Take care and have a great Sunday.

OOOOOOhhhhhhh, I don't think I can make it:cry::cry::cry:. My daughter is due to have her baby on May 30th and even if she's right on schedule, this is my daughters first baby and I have strict instructions that I am not to go anywhere! The only way I might be able to attend is if she's a few weeks early.

OK... It's official... I'M GOING!!!!!! Yippee!!!!
We decided to make a family trip out of & go camping. And while I'm scrapping on Saturday, hubby & the kids are going to that place called 'Adventure Land' it's an Amusement park & it has water slides too. We're camping there too. So have any of you Iowa people ever been there?

Jenni - I DO NOT need a ride!!!!
Kathleen - I DO NOT need a hotel room!!!

Oh... I can't wait!!!!

Kathleen
03-19-2009, 11:07 AM
Yiipppeeee, Heidi!

I have to admit that we have not been to Adventureland (now, the casino that is across the street from it, that's another story). It is certain a popular outing around town.

How old are your kids, Heidi? Another great family outing could be an Iowa Cubs Game on Saturday night. They are our minor league team, and games are great fun. Saturday nights usually have fireworks, too. Although Adventureland and a ballgame might be too much for one day!

If it helps, I'm sure one of us locals could pick you up and get you back to Adventureland, so as not to strand the rest of the family without a car.

Adventureland is a fun outing for the family. Not sure what your kiddo's ages are, but they should have a blast. The waterpark just opened up last summer and is loads of fun. We've been going there for years. A lot of companies (including my husband's and son-in-laws) provide tickets to the park as a sort of company picnic. It just so happens that both my SIL and DHs events fall on the same day (different companies) and we go with them and the grandchildren. My grandchildren are 7 and 3.

Thanks, I am really looking forward to it. We have 2 girls ages turning 7 & 10 & a 3 yr old boy. We might leave him with grandparents though. We just got back from a waterpark vacation this weekend. And although we had fun, I just think hubby & girls would be able to do more without him, plus I won't be there to help with him all day. I'm feeling a little guilty by leaving him behind but I'm sure he will enjoy his time at grandparents too!

Kathleen - Thanks, but I shouldn't need a ride. The campgrounds has a shuttle service to Adventure Land which I'm sure will keep them busy all day. I appreciate the offer though.

I'm so excited - but now I have to wait a couple more months!!!

Having a just 4 year old, I can relate to the 3-year old. I wouldn't hesitate to enjoy a few hours at Adventureland, but a day would probably be a bit much. The 7 & 10 year olds, I am sure will have a blast (probably dad too, don't forget the camera!), but I bet they will all sleep really well!!!

If you change your mind about a ride, just let us know!

Heidi -- So glad you can come!!!!!!! Just wanted to add a few thoughts about Adventureland. I've also been there many times over the years. Definitely a fun place for a 7 & 10 year old and a dad (especially if dad loves roller-coasters or other rides). That amusement park is just the right size for a day-long adventure. Most years, there is also a circus show that comes to that park and is part of the admission price. If your family is up for it, they could get their hand 'stamped' and then go back for a couple hours in the evening with you (that is if you have anything left in you after a day of scrapping!!!). Definitely a fun day for your family!!!

Kathleen -- your flairs are wonderful. I will have to get my siggie-line spruced up again. I took my flair-card down becuase it was getting outdated. I must get it revised and back up soon!!!

This whole event is finally starting to get 'real' in my head. I don't have a laptop so I'm planning on being the distraction to all of you as you work!! I know I'll be able to do that job very well! :D:yahoo::D:yahoo::D

HeatherL
03-21-2009, 04:22 PM
What do you mean "WORK"? I didn't know a crop involved work. I think I might go with you on the distraction route. You know that, "see something shiny rule". I do have a laptop tied to my hip. We are going to visit our son at the beginning of April one province over. DH said I couldn't bring the laptop. I said then I am not going! Besides that's DSP's birthday bash and I have to be able to communicate somehow right!

It will be here before we know it!

Start thinking about ATC cards, and maybe a name tag!

Oh, ATC cards....fill in the details for those that have never made them.....um....like me!:o

What size do you make them and what is usually included? I'm all about getting a head start on projects! LOL!

Kathleen
04-15-2009, 11:08 PM
I am going to suggest 3 things:

(1) ATC (Artist Trading Card) - to trade an exchange with fellow croppers. As we get closer to the crop, I can let everyone know final numbers so you know how many to print, but I am guessing 20 - 30. They are typically business card size (2" x 3.5"), but you could also design and print playing cards (at a place like ArtsCow (http://www.artscow.com/diy/cat0103)), and they would be 2.5" x 3.5", as would a traditional wallet size photo. For the Adobe crop (since I didn't get them done until the night before and needed to print them at home), I put 4 on a 5" x 7" photo paper, and then cut them up, so my finished size was 2.5" x 3.5".

We have a gallery here at DSP you can check for examples: Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showgallery.php?cat=1190)
And an older, but still relevant, post about what they are: Digital Artist Trading Cards (datc) (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6876)

And here is what mine was for Adobe:

http://cdn-2-service.phanfare.com/images/external/1466784_1419796_66129831_Web_3/0_0_7a8109016e8ad5ec4172475da96001f8_1

(2) Name Tags - probably more for whatever we do on Friday. Be creative! Lauren bedazzled her name on a cap for the Adobe crop, Cathiemarie made a t-shirt I think. I didn't do one at all!

(3) Name/Tent Card - I thought it would be a great idea to make tent cards with name (real name, and/or DSP user name) and maybe where we are from, that we could all put on the table at the actual crop. Maybe start with 8" x 8", fold it in half so it will stand on its own (print on both sides, so it could be read from either side). Or just flat, and stick it to your laptop. Kathleen, I love the idea of name tents!! I am soooo awful with names, and it really, really helps to be able to see the name and the person! (Don't you just hate when someone leans into your chest to read your name tag?)

Thanks Kathleen - I was just about to ask "What is an ATC" when you answered it for me!! I love yours BTW!!

Name Tents - great Idea!!

Hey - Do you think you think you could post a quick little list of what we should bring &/or tips when it gets closer for us inexperienced laptop croppers??
Thanks!!

Kathleen

Let me give this a shot, and anyone else feel free to add...

- ATC Cards (enough to trade with other crop attendees)
- Name Tag (for Friday - still working on what we will do)
- Tent Card for the crop
- Camera
- Computer (desktop or laptop) & your digital stash
- Show off your projects - do you have a photo album full of your creations, have you had photo books printed, a hybrid project you are happy with ... bring them along to share!
- I need to sort out the details of what beverages will be available during the day (lunch is covered, but I need to figure out the rest so everyone knows), but if you haven't had your morning caffeine, you might want to bring a cup with you
- Treats ... do you have a signature recipe and want to share some home made goodies, or a box of chocolates. This certainly isn't mandatory, but kind of fun. I have promised to make my soft ginger cookies:

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/data/4918/thumbs/2009_01-Ginger-Cookies-Top-Secret-3.jpg (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showphoto.php?photo=296617&ppuser=91426)
Top Secret Recipe (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/../gallery/showphoto.php?photo=296617&cat=500&ppuser=91426)

Would it be helpful to have this in a separate thread?

I'd have to be dead to miss it - if I'm just hospitalized, I'll take an ambulance and laptop and scrap from my hospital bed with all you guys around me! LOL Glad to see you have my name down - I'll register any way so I can choose lunch ahead of time. Looking forward to seeing you all again.

I'm on the Nutrisystem diet = low fat, low sugar, low sodium, low carb. Pretty much leaves fruits and veggies. Although I am planning it out so that it is my "weekend off", I still don't want to totally blow it with carbs. So you won't be alone if you bring your own special food to snack on!

:yikes:I'm addicted to BREADS! :yikes:
I just try to avoid the 'refined' flours!!! you know ... that part about being ... NO WAY am I going to avoid all the YUMMIES when I can get access (our acreage has an orchard with peach trees, pear trees, apple trees, plum trees, raspberry patch, strawberry patch, and rhubarb!!! miss all that fun? :yikes: not this good ole' midwestern gal!)

Really? I don't think I know of anyone who is a flour miller! My brother is a baker (owns a wholesale bakery in Atlanta, which means he sells baked goods, primarily bread, to restaurants and hotels), and he has joked with me that even if I don't eat the bread, I should ask for the bread basket on the table to keep him, and other businesses like him, in business! When Atkins was so big a few years ago, he actually saw orders decline from his customers!

Jenni
04-26-2009, 04:04 PM
Oh no question that the diet affected them...the good news is that the demand for tortillas grows constantly and the popularity of the Atkin's diet is on the decline. It's been a funny road....Will's background is actually engineering, but they can either teach engineers about flour or there is a "milling science" degree from Kansas State Univ. and they can teach them about machinery.

The funniest all time story was at a nice dinner for the employees of the mill in Texas where he worked. We had a party room and the poor waiter came out to tell us the choices for dessert. He got up and went on and on about this chocolate cake that was so rich it was "nearly flourless". He just couldn't figure out why the whole room started snickering and booing. We finally told him about our group and I have never seen a man turn so many shades of red!

Kathleen...any chance I can switch to the Turkey Dinner (from the chicken)?

Love the sound of the 'fruit mustard' ... did I mention I'm a mustard nut? One of the things I like to buy when I'm traveling to the corners of the earth! I know...most folks go to the souvenir shops ... not me ... you'll find me in the locals' grocery store!

WOOHOO...can you believe we only have 31 days to wait?!!!!!:yippee::yippee::yippee:

I've seen jcdsmith's ATC ... and Kathleen's ATC ... how about everyone else? Do you have yours done? I'm still 'sketching' mine (mentally of course!) ... so many possibilities!

I'm planning to bring a couple hybrid projects for show&tell:

a fun pencil cup I made a couple years ago and still love,
my custom luggage tags (of course!),
a custom printed candle,
my coffee coaster,
a pair of kitchen hotplates, and
my most recent "Watercolor Prints" (a GREAT FIND!!!)!

Won't YOU bring some of yours too?!:)
I know QueenShakeNBake has a hardbound book to share!
Kathleen...are you bringing your famous metal page hangers?
Anyone else???

See you ALL soon!:yippee::yippee::yippee:

Getting super excited!

And a reminder, the hotel releases the rooms today. So if you need a hotel room or might need one, BOOK today!!

The ATC card I posted earlier was from last year, but I have my new one almost done. I want to send it to Artscow to print on playing cards, so I need to get it done sooner than later! And I will give a hint ... Nicole's designs will get major credit for them!

Linda, I do plan on bringing one of my frames. I have done a couple projects with sheet metal and magnets, and just love them!

Glad you're bringing your frame!!! I keep wanting to do one like that, just haven't gotten to it! So...hoping I'll be inspired to make that a higher priority!

If anyone makes custom family calendars I'd love to see one!!! I'm in the midst of that project for several families (mine, my DHs family, my sister's in-laws, ... word got out!). So far I've gotten all the various family 'groups' into my Mac Calendar and Address Book software (SO NICE! It all ties together then! All I have to do is link the calendar, the address book, and the images into iPhoto for final layout ... love that!). Still working on collecting photos for the top half ... wanting to feature anyone who has an event on that month so waiting for folks to submit the photos! May have to use my Wacom pen and just DRAW them!!!:rofl::rofl:

Anyway...I'd love to see a printed, custom calendar ... I'm a tactile person ... seeing helps immensely!

You'll enjoy having the extra time AND not being in the crazy Friday airport rush along the way! Coming from the west coast, you will probably be happy to have a leisurely travel day on Thursday. As a group, we'll do something late Friday afternoon, I just am not sure what yet. We can give you suggestions on a few things to do around town.

Oh and what hotel should I make a reservation for???
and should I bring any fudge???

Here are the hotel details ... I think the group rate is still active today:

HOTEL DETAILS:
Drury Inn & Suites
5505 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa 50266
515-457-9500 (see below for reservation number)

Group rate of $79.99 per night (plus applicable taxes) for Friday, June 5th and/or Saturday, June 6th. Room rates includes Hot Quickstart(r) Breakfast, Evening Manager's Reception, High-Speed Internet Access.

Deadline for hotel: Wednesday, May 6, 2009 for group rates. Rooms are limited at the group rate, and prices may be higher after the deadline if available at all.

To make reservations, visit Drury Hotels Online Reservation System (http://www.druryhotels.com/Reservations.aspx?groupno=2060008) or call 800-325-0720 - specify the above hotel location and group number 2060008.

I am going on playing car route so I don't have to (1) print them (2) cut them (3) laminate them! Last year I just printed at home on photo paper (no laminating) and they were just fine!

Please, please, please contact me if you want any help as you come into Des Moines for the crop on Thursday or Friday. I retired early a couple of yrs ago and live almost next door to the DSM airport. If I can give anyone any kind of assistance or even just be available to welcome you and be someone to hang with until all the fireworks start, contact at my email address and I will give you my phone number so we can connect, if you would like. I am so excited about this first crop in my home town that I would be thrilled to show it off to you out of towners!

Here is the "official" word on attire ...

CLUBHOUSE ATTIRE
Acceptable Attire:
• Shirts and blouses with collars
• Collarless shirts, blouses and sweatshirts that conform to the styles sold in our Pro Shop or in other fine clothing stores.
• Bermuda or mid-thigh length shorts
• Jeans or other denim dress that would be deemed acceptable at a private country club.
• Coordinated warm up outfits.
• Tennis attire.

Unacceptable Attire:
• Frayed, ragged, tattered or sloppy clothing of any kind.
• Cut-off s and coveralls.
• Gym shorts and jam-style clothing.

My interpretation ... come comfy and casual, but not sloppy and torn. Seriously, it is a pretty casual club, I am sure I will be wearing shorts of capris, and some sort of a "nicer" t-shirt. DSP attire is acceptable if you have it!

If you need any clarification, just let me know.

It is with great disappointment that I have to cancel my plans to attend the IOWA crop. My flight alone to Minneapolis is $761.00 and add on hotel and food and registration and extras it has just become too expensive. I will really miss this opportunity to meet all of you in person. I hope someday I will be able to attend a crop closer to home. Jenni thanks for the offer of a ride to Des Moines. I guess you will have room for one more.

Good question on the weather. Yesterday and today it has been in the 80s, which I think is pretty normal for the day for early June.

I created my ATC in my software program (CS3) and then uploaded to ArtsCow. The price was listed at $10.99 for a personalized deck of cards (my ATC are the back side of a deck of cards). However when I checked out they ended up being free. I just had to pay $5.99 for shipping (from China). They were fast and turned out great.

I was just wondering what everyone was wanting to do on Friday night? Do you just want to get together for dinner and gabbing, or try to get in a photo walk, etc.

If there is an interest in a photo walk, I thought those of us in Des Moines could throw out some ideas to see if we can come up with some places. Since I do most of my shooting in Des Moines, I am not as familiar with places in West Des Moines. Here are some of my favorite places to visit. I would love to find out other great places in the area to photograph.

1. Gray's Lake / Water Works Park. Can get some beautiful pictures of the lake and downtown Des Moines towards sunset.

2. The Principal Riverwalk (http://www.principal.com/riverwalk/maps.htm) - Botanical Center. Although not completed, the Principal Riverwalk has some excellent photography opportunities. In addition, the Botanical Center has some beautiful outside gardens for photographing. And there is the new Japaneese Pagoda with beautiful views of downtown.

3. Greenwood Park / Art Center. This is actually my favorite fall location for pictures but I'm sure there would be opportunities now too.

Here are some things going on in the area:

1. Friday, June 5 -- Blues Before Sunset at the State Historical Museum. FREE. First Friday of Month starting June @ 5:30-7:30 p.m.

2. Norwalk Farmer's Market Fridaym, 4 - 7 PM. Never been to it and it is kind of early.

3. For the early risers there is the Downtown Farmers' Market, which opens at 7 a.m.

I had a great time at the Amana Colonies years ago when I went there with my parents and brother. I honestly can't remember much of the trip as it's been about 20 years, but I know we had fun. There was an outlet mall involved.....and there are lots of wine vinyards in the area. I remember that because they all gave out SAMPLES and after a couple hours of walking around we were all in a VERY good mood! LOL!

If you have extra time it was a cute place to visit.

Oh Brenda! The Amana Colonies are something to experience! Lots of heritage there. I'm sure your hotel will have brochures etc on the colonies and probably be able to offer some advice etc. If you decide to go, I'd recommend leaving your hotel bright and early on Friday morning so you can have a full day to browse around! We'll enjoy hearing about your excursion Friday evening!

Now if we'da done this earlier in May ya'll could have seen the Pella Tulip Festival ... ABSOLUTELY gorgeous! Luckily, there's lots to see in Iowa (despite what the rest of the world thinks! )

As for vineyards ... well ... there are several right in the Des Moines Area ... Queen Shake N Bake can fill you in on them! She brought some great bottles from area vineyards to the spring retreat and they were FANTASTIC!!! Of course, I know you live in wine country so ... checking out the midwest vineyards may not be all that interesting ay?

SO GLAD you decided to come after all!!! See you, again, real soon!

I'd love to update you on loca vineyards. If you go to the Amana colonies, you need to eat at the Ox Yoke Inn. There are two locations, one right off I-80. Here (http://www.amanacolonies.com/)is more information on the Amana Colonies. As for their wine, all I can say it isn't my cup of tea, but some really like it.

Closer to Des Moines there are a few wineries I would highly recommend. The first one would be Summerset Winery (http://www.summersetwine.com/), about 10 miles south of Des Moines.

Another great winery is the Jasper Winery (http://www.jasperwinery.com/) near downtown Des Moines. I love this place. It is also very close to what I consider the city jewel of Des Moines--Gray's Lake (http://www.ci.des-moines.ia.us/departments/pr/grayslake.htm) with a 2 mile path around the lake with views of downtown.

Here is a link to the Heart of Iowa Wine (http://www.shwinery.com/winetrail.aspx/) home page.

Another winery/road trip would be the Tassel Ridge Winery (http://www.tasselridge.com/), which is about a 40 minute drive from West Des Moines. It is just south of Pella, which is a very picturesque town. If you go here, you HAVE TO stop in Pella and get a Dutch Letter.

There are others too I would recommend. Let me know if you would like more information.

Hi, All! Kathleen mentioned the crop in one of our NKOTB 15 threads. Since I'm about 4 hours away (SW Minnesota), I thought I'd check it out. I was able to make reservations for Friday and Saturday at the hotel (at the group rate). Think there's only one room left for the group rate. Anyway, still working out the details with DH. Can't believe I'm even thinking of leaving DD who's 2 1/2 for 3 days! But DH is more than capable and I think I need some 'mommy' time. What's the deadline for registering for this in the DSP store?

Still such a newbie with this digi-scrapping but would love to make some great friends and learn some new techniques.

About those ATC cards...I've never created one (will read the posts on the ATC's and read the DATC posts) and would probably need to take the file somewhere for printing. Can Kinko's or someplace like that print and/or cut for me? Can I make them in PSE 6 and how do I get started? Would really like to have something to share.

Geez, I feel so stupid asking questions that you all don't even need to think about.

I'll let you know if I can make it. FYI: I'd be driving. Thanks!

Kathleen

Hey, Jacqueline, glad you wandered over here! I would like registration in the store as soon as you can, but within a week or so would be great. If you need more time, just let me know.

ATC cards are kind of like a creative business card. They are certainly not a requirement, but something fun to exchange with other people at the crop. You can certainly do them in PSE. When I did mine last year, I designed them 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and then stacked them up on a 5" x 7" document and then printed them on photo paper. I then had to cut them apart. If you have a printer at home, you could also buy business cards (Avery or store brand at any office supply store), then come in an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet, but have micro-perforations so you can print and then just tear them apart.

As for what to put on the card, some ideas ... photo, who you are, where you live, things you love, a blog if you have it, things about you. From an earlier post ...

Let us know what other questions you might have.

It is a 15 minute drive from the airport to your hotel (10.26 miles). Here's a link to driving directions from the airport to the hotel: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/2-F4DdcsjsjA9*

What kinds of things interests you? If shopping is your thing, there is a large shopping mall less than a mile west of the hotel. Or you can hop on the freeway and head to the East Village in Des Moines and visit the Botanical Center, State Capitol, State Historical Museum, East Village (shops). Another idea nearby is the Science Center. Des Moines also has an art museum just west of downtown. There are two casinos nearby--one about 40 minutes south of your hotel on Interstate 35 in Osceola or one about 20 minutes east from your hotel via Interstate 80 in Altoona. There are numerous wineries nearby if you like to do that kind of thing.

I wish I could take Friday off and play tour guide for you, but I'll just be coming off of a board meeting with lots of stuff to get done before flying to Indianapolis on the Monday following the crop for work.

While in the shower I thought of another place to visit--this one would probably be my top pick to spend time at. It is Living History Farms, which is just 4.9 miles from your hotel, 7 minutes away right off of I-35 North. Admission is $11.50. While at the farm, there are lots of photogrraphic opportunities while visiting the 1790 Iowa Indian Farm, the 1850 Pioneer Farm, the 1900 Farm, and the 1875 town of Walnut Hill which includes the Flynn Mansion, a upperclass Victorian home, a middle-class family home, a rural church (where my son was married two years ago June 9), and a country cemetery along with merchants.

I forgot to mention that if you enjoy shopping, besides Jordan Creek Mall a short distance to the west of your hotel there are plenty of shops right behind your hotel in West Glen Town Center.

Brenda, I just saw this on the online version of the Des Moines Reigster (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200990524005). I didn't know anything about the Village of Ponderosa, which evidently is between West Glen (where your hotel is) and Jordan Creek.

DES MOINES, AMES
Visitors with free time in central Iowa usually hit the biggies: Living History Farms, Blank Park Zoo, the Science Center of Iowa and the Des Moines Art Center.

But Metro Arts Alliance executive director Kim Poam Logan suggested a few often-overlooked spots to add to the list.

— West: The Village of Ponderosa, a newer development between West Glen and Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, bundles together boutiques, restaurants and outdoor sculptures.

“It’s just a lovely site on a summer day,” Logan said. “The fountain itself is a work of art.”

She’s also a fan of the nearby Samurai Sushi and Hibachi, which offers everything from squid salad to tempura cheesecake. 7125 Mills Civic Parkway, (515) 223-4888, samuraisushiandhibachi.com.

— East: Across town, people can stroll through the East Village to the State Capitol, where terraced gardens are filling out well, and summer’s slower schedule at the statehouse makes it a good time for tours. (515) 281-5591, legis.state.ia.us/pubinfo/tour.

She recommends the nearby Pho All Seasons, which satisfies her weekly craving for Southeast Asian noodles. 1100 E. Ninth St., (515) 265-4222.

— North: For something more low-key, she recommends heading up to the Saylorville reservoir, where families can rent pontoon boats, lounge on the beach or crawl around the kids’ playgrounds. (515) 984-6541, saylorvillemarina.com.

Hey, all!!! After all this time, I can't believe the crop is just over a week away! I am so excited!

For Friday night, since there are a lot of people coming in from out of town and to keep logistics simple, I think whoever is interested should meet in the hotel (Drury Inn) lobby at 4pm. We can chat, walk around West Glen Town Center (http://www.westglentowncenter.com/index.aspx), maybe take some photos, and hopefully enjoy a lovely Iowa evening! There is entertainment in West Glen starting at 5:30pm ($5 admission), and several options for dinner.

I promise to send an email in the next day or so to everyone who has registered with all the details in one place. I will also add my cell phone number, that way if anyone is running late or working Friday afternoon and wants to catch up with us, we have a way to stay in touch.

I have been thinking about renting a room at the hotel (a Hospitality Room) so excited scrappers would have a place to gather just for talking and getting to know each other on Friday evening (in case the weather is bad or you just don't want to shop, walk, etc). If a group wanted to form to go to Gray's Lake for photos (or the East Village / State Capital area) - car pools could be formed from the Hospitality Room.

I'd like to have my Hospitality Room be open from check-in time on Friday until Sunday check-out. This assumes I could still snag a room, even at regular rates!

As for Saturday, I know that 9 AM to 5 PM sounds like a long day but when I go to a Retreat or Crop (especially out-of-town) I'm usually so wound up at 5 PM, I want to time to solidify new friendships, discuss the day and just kick back without having to be alone in my room. I realize there are Moms from the local area that will have to go home to DHs & kiddies, but....what about others??

Does anyone else think this might be a good idea?

Kathleen
05-29-2009, 04:07 PM
I guess the first thing I can say is that I hope it is every bit as nice next Friday as it is today! The sun is out, almost 80 degrees, just beautiful!!!! I will let the group chime in with opinions for Friday night - and it might be helpful just to know who plans on participating on Friday. I have only been in the hotel lobby once, and I am having trouble remembering it, and what the configuration is like. There might be plenty of room to gather and chat there! I will try to check it out today or tomorrow and report back. But hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we can take advantage of being out and about!

I would think for Saturday, a hospitality room might be unnecessary. If we are all excited and having a good time, we can hang out at Glen Oaks into the evening. They won't kick us out until at least 10pm!

I'll let you know when I'll be arriving for sure so I can hook up with you all once I get in. Is it proper to exchange cell #'s in this thread or should that be done in another way? Hi, All!
I just finished my ATC's for the crop. I designed it in PSE 6 and so have a 2.5 x 3.5 psd file. Kathleen said something about stacking them on a 5x7 document.

My question is....So what do I do now to get 4 of them on a 5x7 document. Do I somehow get the 'image' from PSE and import and place 4 of them on a Word doc? Not sure how to 'import' the PSD image from PSE into a Word doc.

Any help? I know this is late but I really wanted to complete something to trade and finally like my final result.

jpizel
06-03-2009, 02:22 PM
Since I've spent so much time on the ATC, I don't really have anything fancy for a name tag. Might have to see if my sister who paper scraps can give me some stuff so that I can create one. Otherwise, it might just be marker on a piece of plain paper. Geez, I am soooo lame!

I'll be bringing some oatmeal milk chocolate cookies! My fave! Hope I don't eat them all on the drive down!

Kathleen
06-03-2009, 02:31 PM
Here is what I would do with your ATC cards. Do File > Save As with your psd file and save as a JPG image (highest setting when promoted). Create a new document that is 5" x 7". Bring the ATC JPG image into the new 5" x 7" document and duplicate the layer 3 times (so you have 4 copies of your ATC card). Arrange the cards so that they fit in the space. Print and then cut.

Let me know if you need more explanation.

And I haven't even done a name tag yet ... hmm, need to work on that!

jpizel
06-03-2009, 02:43 PM
That helped! Thanks, Kathleen!

I'm going to try and get them printed over in Sioux Falls tonight. I didn't leave any border and wonder if that will be a problem. Well, better than nothing!

Geez, I need to do my nails and put in a color and bake some cookies before I leave on Friday!!! Won't arrive til around 6 or so. Not sure if I'll find you guys on Friday night or not. If not, we'll see you on Saturday at the club.

I'm just planning on meeting a the hotel, is that right? Around 4:00 or close to it? Also, I realized last night I got my ATC cards done but failed to remember a name tag. Oops! Well, today's my day dedicated to getting ready - packing & what not! I have my list & the camper is up ready to be packed. I am picking up my ATC cards this morning along with hitting the grocery store. I got my list. I'm feeling better - not too stressed about being ready. Can't wait to meet up with everyone. I can't make it at 4 as my dog has her acupuncture treatments from 3 to 4 and then I have to take her back home and drop her off. I'll meet up with everyone probably around 5:yippee:.

Hey all!!! First, everyone should have received an email from me with all the details (I hope) in one place. My cell phone number was included, feel free to use it tomorrow to catch up with everyone! And if you haven't done so already, fill out the survey I linked to, it will just help us know the audience a bit.

Jenni, your comment about wanting to spend time with "their boy and grandkids" is too funny! I know just what you mean (all in a good way of course).

As far as being prepared or not ... all the official things are in place. It has been a crazy week, and I feel like I haven't had a chance to focus on the details, but I think they are mostly under control!!

MY ATC cards arrived on Tuesday, that was a relief! I haven't done a name tag for Friday either, maybe the idea is over rated???

And a final note about printing ... we will NOT have a printer at the crop, but our Costco is just minutes away. We'll likely set a cut-off time, and we can upload images (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 8x12, 11x14, 12x18, 8x8, 12x12) and I will ask my hubby to go pick them up in the afternoon. You'll pay for what you print, but nothing is more than $3 per page (plus tax).

Doing a happy dance that I have the day off tomorrow, and the fun begins!!!

I have no name tag, no ATCs, haven't had my roots done OR gotten a mani or pedi. LOL! But I'll be there sometime Friday night. I just picked up my ATC cards - Yippee!! One thing I can cross off my list!!

I need advice from all you locals... my family & I are camping & hubby & the girls (7 & 10) were planning on going to Adventureland for the day on Sat. Well, now it looks like 60% chance of rain all day so they need a back up plan of something to do indoors. It looks like there is a Science Mus with an Imax that might be kinda fun. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated...

I can't wait - it's all most here!!!!!! Ok I gotta go finish packing!!

I am so disappointed to miss this opportunity to meet all of you. I kept looking for seat sales but the prices just kept going higher. The flights started out at about $575, then to $800 then to $1900 and today are at $2,379.28. I can go to Maui much cheaper than this. Who would buy a ticket at this price and only get to Minneapolis? Have a ton of fun and I hope we can eventually meet up.

Heather, I was so hoping you would stumble upon a great last minute fare ... bummer!

A quick update for everyone else ... the PDF link (both in the first post of this thread, as well as the email I sent out) isn't working at the moment. Nicole will check in out and get it fixed this afternoon, but if in the meantime you need it, just send me an email or PM and I will sent it to you directly.

Kathleen
06-04-2009, 01:27 PM
Heidi ... the Science Center is a lot of fun! And I think your kids are a great age for it. We like the zoo, too, but if the weather is bad for Adventureland, it is probably bad for the zoo, too. Also, I am pretty sure that as part of Adventureland Inn, they have an indoor waterpark. I don't know if you get access to that as campers, or if you can buy day passes. Call them and inquire.

Sportsplex West (http://www.sportsplexwest.com/) is an indoor sports and recreation complex. They have a climbing wall (http://www.sportsplexwest.com/index.cfm?page=13) that I am sure your kids (and hubby) would really enjoy!

I'll think about it and see what else I can come up with.

Keep in mind, the weather forecast changes pretty quick, so maybe it will take a turn for the better!

DH (Art) and I arrived in Des Moines about an hour ago & are just taking some time to relax after traveling since early this morning.

Kathleen, what a beautiful place you picked. The hotel is pristine and the shopping/eating area around here looks terrific! Nice, nice job!

We're not quite sure what we'll do this evening. For tomorrow we are thinking about about backtracking to where we saw the signs for the Bridges of Madison County and the John Wayne birthplace. I also picked up a brochure about restored barns, a couple of which seem to be relatively close to here. But we will plan to be back in time for the 4p.m. meetup in the hotel lobby.

Heidi, please let me know if you need anything. If your husband wants the car, I'm sure someone can get you to/from the crop.

Another idea, if it looks like rain and they decide to bypass Adventureland, but maybe a rain free morning, hubby and kids might check out the Downtown Farmer's Market (http://www.desmoinesfarmersmarket.com/), which is just blocks away from the Science Center. They have some fun stuff for kids entertainment, great food (can't miss the breakfast burritos), and a very unique Des Moines experience.

THAT WAS SO FUN!!!! Kathleen -- You did a wonderful job getting the whole event lined up. I enjoyed every single minute!

Gail -- your photos & videos are awesome. The hawk photos look like you were sitting right up there with him! And you got an awesome shot of the eggs.

I loved meeting all of you -- some for a 2nd or 3rd time (ok --for Nicole, I've known her a bit longer) but most for the first! Regardless of how long we've known each other, it was nice to feel like I was in the company of life-long friends this weekend!

I hope your flight home went well and that you enjoyed your tour of DesMoines (and of course...glad to hear you enjoyed the crop!) Next time, we'll meet on your turf ... I'll be back in the Bay Area in January (hopefully!). Kim's even talking about trying for a fall trip...so...who knows! I'll keep you posted!:yes::pray:

Will have to try to catch one of jcdsmith's meetups . . . hope you DSMers will get a strong group going! It would be nice to have something "local" for gathering w/fellow addicts.

But OOOHHHHHH so yummy!!

Kathleen,

This past week-end was so great, thanks to you and your loyal helpers! Any chance it could become an annual event? I promise I'll help in any way you wish! I am still hoping to get the DSM area folks to meet up in my scrap room once a month or every other month but we'll see if anyone emails or calls me with any interest. I'll keep you posted in case you are interested. Thank you again for an over-the-top Des Moines Area Crop!!!

I have some really cute pictures that I will put on the flickr group also.....I just need to fix them up some and today was NUTS helping out in Cole's classroom. Tomorrow is the last day of school! Woo Hoo!

Hope everyone had a great trip home and I'll talk to you soon! We should keep this thread going as a "crop alum" forum now so we can stay in contact some! :-)
