Committing to taking a photo a day is a big undertaking. Its not as big a commitment though for us who are used to photographing our daily lives frequently as it is for others so we already have a head start.

START TODAY

First of all you dont need to start this project on January 1st or any other 1st of the month. . Dont procrastinate. Start today.

DOCUMENT AND JOURNAL

Try to post your photos online as soon as you can, that way you will remember the details behind the photo for your journalling. You dont need to scrap all the photos immediately but if you have them documented and saved then creating your finished product becomes easier.

DONT STOP
[
This is the key – dont stop and thats the hardest thing. It can get daunting but doing this as a group will provide the support for you to keep going.!

HOW

There are 2 basic ways of approaching your project 365. For some it will be a more traditional scrapbooking approach, with photographing the events of your daily life. This can be particularly rewarding as you can look back in years to come and see exactly what you were doing on any particular day.

At the end of your project you will be able to look back and remember specifically what happened on each day . The small details in life are so often overlooked and forgotten and with this sort of project scrapbooking really comes into its own.
By using the products DSP has created specifically for Project 365, producing superb finished pages is so easy.
For others it may be a way to improve your photographic skills , and it will be sure to do that . Taking a photo a day will make you a better photographer . It will give you practice in learning your camera and its capabilities and limitations. You will learn and develop skills in composition, lighting and creativitiy in your shots, and over time understanding your camera will become second nature.
For most of us, our 365 project will fall somewhere in the middle of these two approaches, giving the best of both worlds, allowing for our own creativity and our passion for recording family history in our scrapbooks.

TIPS TO HELP ALONG THE WAY

1.Always carry a camera with you.
This is a given, and many of us do this anyway, but its a very good habit to get into to remember to take a camera EVERYWHERE, - not just to those places where ' standard' photo opportunities present themselves, but EVERYWHERE. - to the supermarket, while picking the kids up from school, walking the dog.... If you have a small point and shoot then carry it with you always. If you have a camera phone , it will do in a pinch too.
If you have a DSLR, its a bit more of a burden but try and remember to have a camera with you at all times. You never know when a perfect photo opportunity is going to present itself and you need to be ready for it!!

2. Make posting and recording your journalling easy
Post your photo to your DSP gallery or to our Flickr Group reguarly. If you post soon after you have taken the photo you will remember the feelings and details behind the photo and this will make it much easier when you come to create your finished product. Its much easier to go and copy and paste journalling written at the time the photo was taken than to remember what happened a week.
or 2 later.
It' s also less stressful to do it in small batches than leaving it for weeks and feeling daunted by having to catch up.

3.Keep an ideas notebook or list
You will often come up with great ideas when its not possible to photograph them at the time, Keep a small notebook and jot down those ideas as they come to mind and then on a day when you are low on creativity you can choose something from your ideas list.

4 .Use Themes ( Think Scrapolution)
After the first few weeks you may find yourself running out of ideas for your photo. Using themes is one way to vary things while sticking with your initial concept plan.
DSP's Scrapolution Calendar (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/place/themes.shtml)is a great place to start .

Here is a list of some other themes and ideas you could try.

Food Take a photo of the food you are eating, or while you are preparing it, or of piles of it after doing the supermarket shopping. Take a photo of the inside of your pantry or fridge or freezer.
Look UP Whats above you?
Look Down What are you standing on . Take a photo of the grass or the ground or get right down on the ground and take a photo from that perspective.
Shoes and Clothes What are you wearing, what are your kids wearing
The weather Take a photo of the sky, or rain on the window, or a rainbow if you see one .
Sunrise/ Sunset. Get up early and see the sunrise, or wait till dusk and see it set.
Shadows . Take a photo of your shadow or the shadow of a building or an object .
Reflections. Yours in a mirror, or reflections in a lake or pond or puddle or the sea .
Work If you work outside the home, take your camera to work.
Bubbles . Blow some, or find them in a milkshake, glass of soda, glass of sparkling wine or beer, or in a bubble bath.
Around the house Take photos of your furniture, your crockery, cutlery, your linen cupboard.
Toys Take photos of the kids toys, those loved and unloved ones.
Dressing table Whats on your dressing table- jewellery hairbrush makeup???
TV Snap a photo of your favourite show on tv.
What you are reading Take a photo of the novel you are reading , magazines, cookbooks- whatever it is you are reading at the moment.
From Up High Take a photo of something you see regulary but take it from way up high,
Down Low Do the same thing but take it from the ground looking up.
Movies Photograph your DVD collection.
Pick a color of the week. Choose a color and photograph things only in that color for the whole week
Use someone elses ideas There are hundreds of ideas at Photofriday.com (http://www.photofriday.com/challenges)

5. Support Each Other
Joining the DSP Flickr group and supporting each other here in the DSP forums will make it easier for us to encourage each other and spur us on when we think we are not able to complete the task

And don't forget about that camera on your cell phone - if it is all you have, use it.

Stuck for ideas? Challenge yourself to try a mode on your camera that you haven't used before (have you tried Macro - or night portrait?) What about photos of your local neighbourhood shops? It is amazing how quickly they can change (especially these days). I went to a part of town I hadn't been to for a year or so and was shocked at how different everything was!

Your chat yesterday inspired me. I'm in! After the chat I was out and had to stop for gas. I pulled out my cell phone and took a picture of the price of gas. :p Now I just have to figure out how to get the photo from my camera to the computer  Then I went out today and took some shots of the pollen everywhere as well as a few flowers. Once I start clicking I sometimes get carried away. Do you ever take just ONE photo a day? The uploading may be my biggest stumbling block, but I'm going to work on it.

Muma, I'm sure your photos are just fine. Jump in and play :)

Thanks for all the tips on what to take photos of. I usually think I want to scrap photos of the grandkids but I have to wait between visits... normal life didn't seem interesting enough with me sitting at pc for a lot of the time! Good ideas. Now I really have to get a nice little point and shoot so I can carry it with me.

To start with- thank you for the chat yesterday I loved it. I did start taken a photo a day on April 1 and have done photo a day, and this morning I took an idea from Lauren and too a photo of my breakfast - never thought of that really. But not sure why I should post my photo and not just the lo?

How uncanny is this. I opened my Creating Keepsakes magazine today and read an article talking about documenting a day in your life. It gave a list of 50 great ideas for photo ops to document.

There was also an article about "camera fun" and doing a family photo scavenger hunt - how fun is that idea!

My mind is reeling just thinking about the endless possibilities for our P365! Now I just need to get going

I can also see how this will change how I choose my photos for scrapping - LOL for me it would actually save me from feeling like I have to scrap EVERYTHING. Hmmmm - now if only I could get caught up with my huge backlog

I started this and didn't even know it. I just started posting everything in the Photo A Day Gallery here at DSP. I started back on New Years Eve. I am now current at Flickr as well. Granted I tend to mis on average 2-3 days a month but my goal is to do everyday for April. I was looking at the list at the beginning, just nodding my head, "done that, done that, hmm that's a new one."

Muma
04-06-2009, 07:16 PM
So do you upload the photos straight from the camera or does anyone crop and spruce up their work before hand??

Jeanet
04-06-2009, 07:29 PM
I'm sure you could do both Sue. Personally I can't look at a photo and not feel the need to do 'a little something' to it.

Oh and btw. I've signed up to the group, hoping this time it'll finally work for me.

I am exactly the same Jeanet .... something always needs tweeking. Got a weird one for yesterday, will have to upload and show you how smeary the tv is .... it looks like DD took a lump of lard and smeared it all over the screen.

Yep I spruce up - well I need to cause ive changed to shoot in Raw now - I really never used to but since having cs4 and really liking Adobe camera raw and what it can do Ive decided thats the way Im going from now on - it is a bit of a pita that you need to " develop" each photo tho but it doestn take that long

What I love about 365 projects is that they really make you think and look for opportunities to take photos. Like Lauren, I shoot in RAW (except with my point and shoot that doesn't have that function) so I have to edit my photos before I post. It certainly helps sharpen up your skills in that area too! You get a LOT quicker LOL

04-06-2009, 11:11 PM
I don't usually crop but I do, make adjustments if I feel the image needs them and if all else fails make it B&W. That seems to help some of my bad shots that I love anyway.

I am really loving this so far! I'm inspired to take so many photos that I wouldn't have normally thought to take. But I think they will be so fun to look back on!

I was just doing some shopping and saw a quote on one of Suzanne's fonts (DSP Little Joys) that I thought was so perfect for Project 365. In fact, I might use it on the title page of my album.

"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." -Robert Brault

How perfect is that!?

Depends on the privacy settings you want. If they are photos of people you might not want the wider Flickr community to see (remembering it is a WIDE community), you can set it to private. This means no one will see your photos. However, when you send them to the DSP 365 group (which is what you have to do to get them in there), group members will be albe to see them. You will see the option "Send to Group" just above your image after you have uploaded. If you have joined the DSP group, it will appear on the list. Click on it to send your image to the group. If you have set your photo to Private or Friends and Family, then Fickr will warn you that members of the group will now be able to see you photo. I hope that makes sense!!

No you dont to join in here - you can join in here without even looking at flickr which is really just a depository for all our photos to stop us clogging up the DSP gallery with all our photos !!- but if you want to be part of the 365 group thats AT flickr then you will need to sign up there

I think Sharon mentioned already - I let all mine be public and dont limit their viewing - but if i had some I really didnt want the general population at large to have access to I would select friends or family. ( you can change the status of your contacts there to be just contacts, friends or family ) .

Yes, I think I will join in. We are starting a CD today so I can start there. Must admit I am not thrilled about this CD project, but DH is and so are two friends of ours who wrote a neat song that is going to be on it. They were so happy when DH asked them yesterday if it was okay if we recorded it and who am I to disappoint them? So, I'll keep my reservations about this here at DSP and not here in MV. And who knows? Maybe our friend and sound man can perform CD magic and make me sound better than I am. :-)

As the Easter weekend was rather busy it was easy to take photos for my first weekly layout. I wonder if I'll manage to keep going, no matter if my life's quiet or very busy.

I made myself some layout templates so I just need to change paper, photos and journaling, I guess that will make things much easier.

As you will see there are some days I did not have a photo.(I hurt my neck and did not do anything for a day or two) On these days I plan to do extra journaling in the space for the photo.

Looking at some of the photos you have all been taking isinspiration in its own right. Have uploaded most of photos to flickr and the first 2 weeks are in the gallary LO style. All this means I am yet to deal with the real life porblem of a broken freexer but much more relaxed than if I had!

2 more pages done - these go super fast!!! I'm definitely loving this

I figure I'll fill in between these P365 pages those pages where I want to further scrap an event/moment.

I'm in! I am still working at getting a shot every day. I confess I have missed a few days and doubled up the next. I've done my first 4 weekly pages. And I'm trying Janet's challenge to jot down a sentence a day too.

I'm finding it quite hard to scrap some of the mundane, routine sort of days, so I'm sometimes putting more than one day to page. We are off to London for the weekend so I hope to have plenty to choose from after that.
