First off, let me say how excellant I think this site is... I have learned soo much since stumbling on it a couple wks ago.
I have been working my way thru the tutorial on collages. I have managed to do follow along up until I need to duplicate the layer and hide it. Can someone pls help.
Thx so much!

What program are you using? Can you post a link to the particular tutorial you're using?

In PS and PSP, there will be an eye next to the thumnbnail in the layers palette, click it and it will hide the layer.

To duplicate, in PS drag the layer thumbnail to the little square in the bottom of the layers palette, in PSP drag it to the two overlapping squares at the top of the layers palette. Or, in both programs, right click on the layer title and choose Duplicate Layer.

LMK if this doesn't help
And welcome!

Hi Angel and WELCOME :)

What program are you using? Usually to hide a layer you will click the eye on the layer palette and that will "hide" it. :)

ok...Make sure you have your layer palette showing - window > show layers or just F7....

To Duplicate a layer - layer > duplicate layer

To hide a layer - click on eyeball to grey it out to hide layer / click on eyeball again to show layer.

Hope this helps. :)

I hate to barge in but can't in PS7 you use layers and the eraser tooL too?
That is all I did to create a collage. Maybe I did easy pictures or something? I am going to have to check that out!

Angel if you would like to take a look at the one and only collage I did and if it fits the kind you want to do just let me know and I can walk you through what I did. It is really simple! All I used was layers some brushes for texture and the eraser tool....................and oh yeah that opacity button, Can't live with out that one!!!!!

here is the link: excuse me if this doesn't work I have never posted a link before!

LOL... Amy, you crack me up! I don't use PS7 personally. Just answering the ? about hiding and duplicating layers. Lauren is our resident expert in PS7 - and there may be others. :)

Lovely layout.

I understand about the layers, the eraser and the opacity thing. But could you explain what exactly you do with brushes to create texture??? I use PSP instead of PS but I have brushes too. I'm just not sure what to do with them! LOL

I'm with you Canay. I don't know what to do with them either.

Amy, your layout is great, but I don't understand how to get that effect.

Okay, I'm a little confused at exactly what the specific questions are here.
I'll try to answer, but I need some clarification as well.

Amy: what exactly are you asking about? PSE doesn't have masks, so using the Eraser is a viable alternative. The benefit masks over using the eraser is the ability to alter what you do. Brushing the mask covers up parts of the photo, but then you can remove parts of what you covered giving even more texture and depth than just erasing and leaving it at that.

Canay & pbrooks: brushes don't make texture per se; there are ways to do it, but it's not the basic brush function and not what Amy did to create texture on her layout. I think she means she used brushes where you see the streaks, etc, to create that effect.

Exactly what part of the tutorial is the issue now? Or are we on something else now?

So I'm not sure where this thread is going now: are we still talking about the collage tutorial? Or are we talking about brushes now?

Let me know if I answered any questions or just asked more!

LOL... I am still talking about collages... I don't know about the rest of you....
Ok... I got my layers copied and hid and so on....
Is there some way I can show you what I have so far? If not, I will try to describe it.
I have 4 pics... one of myself, one of each of my two sons, and one of their father. I have faded the edges and so on... (altho I don't like the squared off look I keep ending up with it no matter how many ways I rearrange) The boys pics are their hospital newborn ones... the ones of Mark and me are not as nice a quality... they are more blurry once I start blending.... At first that bugged me, but I have decided it works since my focus is on our children, not us. Anyway, now I need to fade them out A LOT more than they are and blend them together a lot more... I am playing with tools and palettes and layers but haven't found what I need yet.
Any suggestions?

My apologies for getting off topic. Angel started the thread with a question about the tutorial (which I have just printed and am looking forward to reading).

My question regarding the brushes should have gone to a new thread.

post it in the step-it-up gallery and then people will give you suggestions on improving it. if you don't know how to resize it for uploading, we have quick classes in the university to tell you how.

NO toes stepped on here! I was just wondering what the questions were exactly, as there were several ideas floating and I couldn't tell what were questions, comments, etc.

Hopefully we got everything sorted out. I also started a new thread just for brushes for collages here
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391
for any specific questions

I'd have a very hard time keeping up if I was the only one who was allowed to answer questions! Stay involved, all our toes are safely stowed under the desk and safe from injury!

For this thread, any other questions for getting the collage composed?

My question is, is the tutorial you mention the one posted on the quick class list? Thanks.
