Well, I have just been busy as a bee, getting organized on my pc, and decided to backup everything. I have Norton's 360 suite, so I decided to use it to back up my stuff. (After all, it's constant messages tell me to!)
Unfortunately, I still had my EHD (F:\ drive) still hooked up, and not knowing any better, started the backup. Norton's decided I didn't need an E: drive-DVD/cd- and did away with the driver for it, and tried to back up to F. I hope I stopped it in time-haven't had the guts to look, yet.
I'll be calling my local pc shop (needed more memory anyhow). I don't think I received a Windows disk with my pc since it is all on the pc, anyhow I couldn't get the device manager to do anything-it just says the driver file is currupted.
Oh my....live and learn.
Can you imagine doing anything without a cd/dvd drive? It opens but isn't listed and the pc won't recognize it.

I HATE Norton! Every major computer problem I've ever had was caused or made worse by Norton!
I hope you get everything sorted. I'm sure you can!
Have the repair people take Norton off of your system! It's really hard to remove yourself cause it embeds itself in everything!
My DH had problems with McAffee, so we switched to Webroot Spy Sweeper with Antivirus. I LOVE it! Plus, it's much cheaper!
Good luck!

Hear, hear -- and I'm a Mac user! Once upon a time I bought Norton Utilities for Mac thinking it would be a good housekeeping tool. Only time I've ever had serious problems with a Mac (well, that I didn't cause all by myself anyway :o). I had a few Mac-using friends who wouldn't listen to me and -- same thing -- we all ended up reformating our HDs.

Well, as I said, Norton denied that it had anything to do with the DVD drive becoming a "Norton" only drive. I spent several days on the phone with their techs, so I resigned myself to having to get another pc, and other virus software. Both of our laptops lost the DVD players unless we were backing up with Noton's.
About a month later, all of a sudden my DVD began working again and I found a "FIX" that had been downloaded with updates. They never admitted anything.
I'm still using Norton's, at least until my year runs out.

I'm not a fan of Norton. It seems to take too much control. Unfortunately, almost every anti-virus program has some sort of glitch, so it is just picking the least of all evils.
I have been using Zone Alarm for 2 - 3 years now and have only had one glitch (some sort of conflict disabled internet access). Both Microsoft and Zone Alarm addressed the issue quickly, so by the time I got the updates to hit the bug, there was already a known fix for it.

Microsoft recently released a free antivirus tool (Microsoft Security Essentials) and it's actually really good.
Nod32 is another good antivirus software I would have no problems recommending.
I personally like to use an outbound firewall as well...on Windows XP I use an old free firewall (Kerio 2.1.5) that works well, although it lacks the HIPS features of more recent firewall software.
The firewall built into Vista and Windows 7 supports outbound filtering, but the one built into XP doesn't and is unfortunately quite easy for programs to bypass. (It's possible for a virus to actually turn the firewall off in XP, which kind of defeats the purpose.)
