We have chosen early December for a San Antonio get together because the Christmas lights on the Riverwalk are turned on the day after Thanksgiving.

Several of us who live or have lived in or near San Antonio have been emailing and have decided this ought to be more of a GTG instead of a crop because of the many photographic opportunities, but the plans are not in cement.

Weather this time of year is often still nice enough to eat outside.

The airport is only about 15 minutes from downtown and you can catch a bus or shuttle at the airport. The bus is handicapped accessible. There is no need to rent a car or deal with San Antonio traffic.

Anyone interested?

Post your thoughts, questions, and suggestions here.

Also, Karen and I discussed if we stay along the Riverwalk area...

We are close to so many popular colorful and scenic (by that I mean PHOTO OPS):
like the
- Alamo
- RiverWalk - which is magical around Christmas with all the lights.
- River Center Mall
- Hemisphere Plaza
- The Tower of the Americas (built for Hemisphere) don't ask me what year.. because I was a kid ok.
- San Fernando Cathedral - just recently renovated about 4 - 5 years ago...
- The Rest of the Missions - a little bit further away
- La Villita - an Artist Colony now, but the building are quite old and really pretty.
- Some very old Hotels which have been redone and are just beautiful inside
- Several famous theatres which have been redone recently and have reopend
- an Imax theatre
- etc, etc...
So, much to do, so little time...

Oh don't forget Ripley's! Right across the street from the Alamo unless it's been moved.

It's a 3 hour drive from Laredo/New Laredo if anyone is interested in shopping in Mexico. Or, there is a marketplace downtown SA with many of the same goods.

SA also has a very nice zoo.

About an hour's drive from Luchenbach Texas, maybe a little more, I can't remember.

There is also a Six Flags, a SeaWorld, and some water park I can't recall the name of.

A German town is also nearby, sheesh, I can't remember the name of it but someone will.

We did the whole tourist thing last spring. I can't wait to go on a photo walk with you people!

He could hang around with Rene DH and maybe my DH for one thing..

Rene T's anniversary is that weekend, so she is thinking of bringing him along... and then sneaking out for an anniversary dinner or something...

What does he like to do in his spare time - like hobbies...???

There is a lot to do in and around San Antonio... if he had a rental car...

Elizabeth... half the towns around San Antonio have German names... hehe

But, maybe you mean Guerne (pronounced) GREENE....

But, more than likely Six Flags, and Sea World will be closed then... they close up for the winter, and so does the water park... I could never spell that... it's like Shitterbachen or something like that...

And, yes Ripley's is still near the Alamo... oh, unless they moved the Alamo...

And, the only real reason to go to Luchenbach, TEXAS is to try to steal the town signs, if you like the song...

But, they've wised up since I was a teenager... those signs are pretty darn hard to steal now... pretty much impossible...

Not, that I ever did such a thing back then, but maybe my first apartment had a sign or two.. don't know where they came from... maybe gifts from friends... that's it...

It has become pretty dangerous down near Laredo. I'm not going there. Drug wars are a problem all along the border. El Mercado in San Antonio is a much better choice. We can eat at Mi Tierra while we are there. This restaurant is world famous and a great photo-op place.

Fredericksburg is a really neat German town that lots of people go to. It is about an hour from SA.

Sea World was open last year for a drive through of Christmas lights, but I think that was all.

We are going back on the road day after tomorrow and will be wandering around for a couple of weeks. I'll check in when I can, but in the meantime leave you in Debilou's capable hands. She probably knows more about San Antonio than I do even though I lived there 20 years. :-)

I have been posting excerpts from the San Antonio Light newspaper at Squidoo for anyone interested in the history of SA. So far I've only got 1881 posted but will try to get as much of 1882, 1883, and 1884 as I can before next December.

What is St. Joske's?

Joske's was a department store that once tried to buy up a whole city block for their store but a church, St. John's, wouldn't sell so they built the store around it and after that some people started calling it St. Joske's. A caretaker used to show Debilou some neat historical stuff in the basement.

Well, ok.. Joske's is the department store - where my grandparents worked at and fell in and - got married (well they didn't marry in Joske's... but anyhow.. Joske's goes back along ways...
Next door to Joske's is St. Thomas' Catholic Church which has also been around forever - before Joske's...

So, when I was really small (I Had to live with my grandparents for a while) - I sometimes had to wait for them at St. Thomas' - a very safe place to wait...

The caretaker there used to tell me lots of stories about what was underneath the ground level of St. Thomas' - including the fact that some of the Alamo HEROS bones were buried there.

The rest are in a -I'll never be able to spell this one but at the San Fernando Catherdral in a Serpcaphgus... (a sealed thing that hold relics)

Anyhow, there are a lot of old relics in the basement of St. Thomas' and he would show me if he had time..

Now, remember this is almost 50 years ago.. so this guy is probably long gone...

But, I went in to St. Thomas' within the past few years... and mentioned the basement area - the current caretaker acted just like the last one - a little slow... ( I don't mean to be rude) but I could see a similarity.. I asked about what was below.. he also mentioned the relics of the Alamo heros.. So, I really believe some are there.

Now, I never heard about St. Thomas' being called St. Joske's until Karen came along.

But, Joske's wanted to demolish St. Thomas' many years back... when that didn't go over.. they built all around it... (well not on top of it)...

Now Joske's - changed hand's to Foley's, then Dillards' now may Co.... and is part of the River Center Mall.

Now, Can we get down to the basement of St. Thomas' - I really don't think so...

I haven't been down there since I was a little kid... It's really kind of yucky down there... but I can check it out next time I'm in town...

One reason I could get into a lot of places as a kid is because my grandmother's side of the family was very active in an organization called C.I.D.A. - Canary Island Desendants Association...

in the late 1700 - King Felix V of Spain wanted to start populating the land called Tejas... and granted land grants to 16 families... they are called the Canerios.

These families laid the cornerstone of the San Fernando Cathedral and laid out the original plots for what is now downtown San Antonio (de Bejar - then)...

By Birthright - my grandmother and I are part of this organization... and we can be in certain parades, and get into certain events, just by being a Canario....

The cornerstone in the San Fernando Cathedral was lost during it's renovation... so they made a new one... which I'd be happy to show anyone, and it has 16 points... for the 16 families...

I want to go see the Canary Islanders cornerstone, too! While we are at San Fernando, we can go out behind it and take a photo of the rock that is supposed to be the half way point between Florida and California.

I love the SA Botanical Gardens. They have a garden for the blind that is pretty neat, a Japanese garden, buildings for tropical and desert plants, a cabin on a lake, a rose garden, etc. Lunches are great and usually include something edible (flowers or leaves) from the gardens. The restaurant is in what was a coach house.

Well, ladies, here's where I'm currently at in my negotiations:

After riding in our (sort of luxurious) car for 2 hours, plus sitting at dinner for an hour and a half, I told DH there was no way in the world I could ride 18 hours to SA. (according to MapQuest) So, I told him I was going to fly...which leaves him out! :D oh, wait...I meant :(! ;)

(So you can forget about the fishing adventures, on his account!)

My conundrum is that I would probably fly in on a Thurs. or Fri. and leave on Mon. or Tues., depending on Southwest's rate breaks. So, I would need someone to pick me up from the airport, or explicit instructions on how to get from Point A to Point B, without renting a car. (I don't drive in my own back yard, let alone a foreign place. - Well, it's not really THAT bad, but you get my gist.) I know, I know...I'm such a weenie. :worried: :help: :worried: :help:

And I'm wondering if there will be anyone around to entertain me before/after the weekend.   These are the things that will help me decided what the heck I'm going to do!

G may be working for Sees again this year so I may or may not have wheels, but I can meet you at the airport and get you downtown to your hotel on the bus - a short trip. I'll also be around to entertain you before and after the GTG.

Karen wanted to stay near the River Walk...

Once we can get a count of how many are staying...

And, then how many are sharing rooms.. - so basically a room count...

We can call around and see if we can get a room rate discount....

I've stayed at the several nice hotels in the area...

and, all are within Walking distance of many attractions...

and, then I think we will have enough cars to go to places like the Botanical Gardens or where ever else the crowd would like to go...

or the husbands...

So, Maybe it's time... let's start with a head count...

I'm in..

And, more than likely my DH will be there... so. I'll be in one room - and he'll be in it..

And, I'll have a car but can only take 2 more people...

Also, Is there a price range for hotels, that you have to stay under..

Or any Hotel chains that you LOVE or HATE???

Here are some reviews of a hotel I recommend. My sister stayed here last fall and was really pleased. The suite has a room big enough that we could all gather in to talk and make plans. The biggest downside I read in the reviews was the $28 for parking! Ouch!

The hotel is right on the Riverwalk but down toward the end and away from the major hub bub but still close to restaurants, etc. I didn't know about the 360 view of SA until I read the reviews.

The price, last time I checked, was $185 a night.

The Reviews:
Pleasantly Surprised!
We stayed at the Contessa for 4 nights recently following a business trip. I booked it in a hurry and then had booker’s remorse - when I read the recent reviews I was concerned I had made a poor choice...they were not good at all. The lady who checked us in when we arrived was a bit curt and unhelpful (although I must say the rest of the staff we encountered throughout our trip were helpful and friendly). However, the rest of our trip was great! We had a suite with a king room, as requested. The suites are really well laid out with a great use of space. Bed was really comfortable, bathroom was spacious with a great shower, tiling looked brand new (the hotel is only 4 years old), stylish sitting area with exposed brick wall. All the rooms interconnected with their own doors so it was really soundproof - one person could be asleep in bed whilst the other got up and watched tv in the living area and you would not disturb each other. The hotel was also nicely situated right on the Riverwalk in a good spot. We used the hotel restaurant each morning for breakfast; we don’t typically do this on vacation as it’s often overpriced to do so, but the Contessa was really reasonable for breakfast and the quality was good. They also do a great frozen margarita in the bar! Overall, the hotel was good quality, stylish, and less ’cookie-cutter’ than typical hotels - more boutique than chain.

La Contessa - a sweet, suite hotel
La Contessa was a wonderful surprise. The room’s warm, rich Spanish style is beautiful - no veneer in here. Exposed brick on the wall in the living room (with sofa bed) is really good looking. The feel was more like that of a nice boutique hotel than a suite hotel. Front desk was very friendly and asked my 9-year-old if she’d like a high floor or a low one. She choose high so they put us on the very top, just below the pool. Speaking of the pool its roof top view is lovely. Pool is a bit small but the 360 degree view of San Antonio made up for that. A portable poolside bar was a welcome sight after a day at Fiesta Texas. Skip the pricy Margarita -- it’s made from a mix that’s way too sweet. Parents will love having the ability to say goodnight to the kids and close the bedroom door. Please note that the hotel is located on a newly developed part of the River Walk, not in the older crowded area. A walk or a water taxi ride will be necessary to get to the heart of the action at night. We will stay in the hotel again. The one bedroom suite has a door that closes for privacy. Beautifully decorated room, very romantic.

Exceeded expectations!!!!!!
This hotel was a great place to stay. I am already planning on staying there again on my next trip to San Antonio. If you are looking to be near, but not right in the middle, of all the river walk action this is a great choice. Great place to stay for a romantic getaway, family vacation or a girls getaway. The rooms were great (very spacious), hotel staff was very helpful and polite. Valet parking is a little expensive but for me worth the price.

Debilou and I have been emailing like mad today and we have decided to be really laid back about this get together and just present options and let the group decide. Some things we won't miss like the Riverwalk at night, the Alamo, San Fernando Cathedral, and the Guenther House but we can be flexible about the rest.

One thing we talked about that would really be cool is to go to the Botanical Gardens one morning or afternoon and eat lunch there. They do VERY nice lunches for ladies complete with edible flowers and such from the gardens. Anyone besides Crys, Debilou, and I interested in this?

As for getting around, I believe three day bus passes are available and we can use them to get around downtown on the trolleys. There is a tourist bus that will get us around and it can easily handle scooters:
VIA Bus Route 7, the "Sightseer Special" -- a direct connect to many of the cultural attractions in San Antonio, including the Alamo, San Antonio Museum of Art, Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo, Brackenridge Park, and the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

Scamp - There are at least two Starbucks downtown and another coffee shop I like on Houston street. I hope I am able to drink latte's by then. :-(

Ford Fiesta de Las Luminarias
Luminarias SquareOne of San Antonio’s most beloved and centuries-old traditions is to line walkways with luminarias – warmly-glowing candles set in sand-filled bags. Dating back to a tradition from the 1500s, they symbolically mark the “lighting of the way” for the Holy Family. The Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias along the River Walk uses more than 6,000 luminarias to create an unforgettable scene of peace and serenity along the river’s lush banks at dusk on weekends in December.

Here is the menu for the Guenther House. We'll do breakfast there one day. The Guenther House was owned by the Guenther Family who owned the flour mill next door. The flour mill is still in operation and there is a small store in the house where you can buy some of the mixes and other stuff. The house is part restaurant and part museum. Lovely ambience and YUMMY sticky buns.

Breakfast

I thought it would be cool to have some t-shirts made for the GTG that we could wear when we are out on the photo walk or whatever so I talked to a graphic design place here and this is what I found out:

1) Minimum order of 10 shirts
2) Black t-shirt with small one color DSP graphic on front (Margie sent me the logo), larger 3-color graphic on the back, with some kind of San Antonio landmark-type graphic that they will design for us
3) Approximately $14 for short sleeve, $16 for long sleeve, I think we can mix and match the sleeve length, depending on everyone's preference

Let me know what you guys think and if you're interested, I will have them start work designing the back logo.

Do we know about how many DH's we are expecting and if they will be hanging out together or with us or be on their own?

About 7, maybe 8 of us... not including spouses.

We don't have a firmed up schedule... we are working on that.

That's why we are listing out things to do... hoping people will chime in on what they want to do... or DON'T really care t do!!!!

And, we need a back up plan... San Antonio in December, can have absolutely perfect weather, or it can rain or be cold...

So, we need a back up plan, just in case we can't for example go through the botanical gardens... - we could still do lunch there...

Or if it's too cold, probably doing Segway's thur downtown might be miserable...

Something else to look forward to:

Ford Fiesta de Las Luminarias
Luminarias SquareOne of San Antonio’s most beloved and centuries-old traditions is to line walkways with luminarias – warmly-glowing candles set in sand-filled bags. Dating back to a tradition from the 1500s, they symbolically mark the “lighting of the way” for the Holy Family. The Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias along the River Walk uses more than 6,000 luminarias to create an unforgettable scene of peace and serenity along the river’s lush banks at dusk on weekends in December.

I love luminarias!!! :D (And no, I didn't leave; you just never know what's going to happen around here! The good news? DH has a boat!!!) And I have my life back!

One indoor thing we could do is Imax. I love Imax and usually go by myself because my DH gets motion sickness. :-) Imax is downtown in Rivercenter Mall.

It is an easy trip on the bus to North Star Mall if we get a really nasty day. I'm not a big mall person, but went quite a bit last year because DH was working there and it wasn't a bit crowded that early in the season and it was kind of fun to walk around a bit and stop at Sees for free samples. There is a nice Apple store there if anyone needs a new Mac or an iPod Touch. :-) No book store in the mall any more. Humph! But there is a Barnes and Noble just across the interstate. There is the usual food court in the mall. There is also a Cheesecake Factory that has much better food and of course, expensive, yummy cheesecake.

We usually take all our guests to Central Market, but that would require carpooling unless everyone wants to hop in the bed of our truck with the RV hitch. :-) Central Market is a grocery store and most grocery stores are not tourist destinations, but this one is.

Another thing that would require a couple of vehicles is to ride through Incarnate Word at night to see the lights. Very cool. It is just a couple of blocks from Central Market.
We could eat supper at Central Market and then go see the lights. There is a fancy neighborhood close by where we could see more really nice lights on the way home.

After breakfast at the Guenther House, we'll go up and down King William Street - a super photo op if you like big, old fancy houses. But I digress. That is an outside thing.

The price at the Hotel Contessa kept going up, so we've decided on a different hotel - La Mansion. It is also on the riverwalk, so it's near to the places we will be going. A couple of the hotels we looked at are already totally booked for the weekend of Dec 4-6, so we need to go ahead and get our reservations made as soon as possible. The girl I talked to on the phone today at La Mansion said from Thanksgiving weekend through New Years they are almost always totally booked, so the sooner we get our reservations made the better.

Here is the information:

Omni La Mansion Del Rio
112 College Street
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-518-1000 or
1-888-444-OMNI (6664)
http://www.omnihotels.com/

You can make a reservation online or call. Same rates either way. There is a 21 day advance purchase rate of $160.65 plus tax for a King or 2 Dbl beds, or a regular non-advance purchase rate of $189 plus tax. She said the rate can also change at a moment's notice too if someone calls and books 30 rooms for a convention or something like that.

Let me know if you need anything else from me!

Emma, so glad you are coming! I have a company here in Lubbock working on a t-shirt for us. They are going to be black with the DSP logo on front and a 3-color San Antonio graphic on the back. If you want one, they are going to be approximately $14 for short sleeve, and $16 for long sleeve, so I need to know if you want short or long and what size.

FYI--if you're a senior, senora, you can book a refundable, not billed on your cc for $162 a night...:D Some of us qualify! :D

Ok, I sent in my T shirt size to Rene.

and, I have made Our (DH & ME) reservations at the

Omni La Mansion Del Rio (same as Rene)
112 College St.
San Antonio, TX 78205
210-518-1000

Rene lists the web site for the hotel.

I know for certain many of these hotels will start booking Thanksgiving groups in August... So, it's really time to book your rooms.

The current price for a king bed - non smoking room
using AARP

The cost was either $168 - but NON Refundable
or $180 - but we could get a refund with 24 hours notice.
we chose the $180 since the trip is so many months away...

We are staying December 4th and 5th and returning sometime on December the 6th.

I would LOVE to come to this, especially since I just had to bow out of the Adobe crop, but I will have to put myself on the maybe list for now as my DD will be coming in from Australia the week before. If she and her boyfriend decide to stay in LA for a while before coming on to Texas then I'll zing on over to San Antonio to see you all. I'd stay with my mom and dad, who live an hour outside San Antonio, so I won't need a room anywhere. Sounds like fun!

I just found out about this GTG last night. I've been AWOL too long! My plan was to get back to TX sometime in December, and I don't see any reason why it can't be in time to join in the fun with y'all. :yippee: I would love to see my "old" friends and meet the rest of you!!

I do have some issues to resolve, however. Karen, what is the name of the RV park that you and G use while in SA? Do you think they would have a vacant spot for me--I could make a reservation way ahead. If that doesn't work, I have another friend who full-times and is in a park on the N side, but it's so far away I would probably miss out on some of the fun.

Then there's the problem of how to walk the dogs. Maybe I could just board them for the duration. Probably the easiest thing to do. They don't do well staying in the coach for more than 5 hours. I guess I can decide after activities gel a little more.

Last, I can't walk very far either, Crys and Fran. Even with my walker--I just get too weak. But I have a new little 4-wheel GoGo scooter that I take apart and put in the trunk of my car. I think that would work, as long as there are ramps to use to get in and out of places. If you two rented one we could all three run around on them! I'm just not sure how it would work if the group took the bus or trolley. Anyone know if they can be taken on buses in SA?

Looking forward to hearing more, and suggestions as far as the above issues. :D

I answered this to Fran but thought I would post the answers in case anyone else thinking about coming might have the same questions.

We will be staying at the KOA on Gembler Rd about 5 miles east of downtown. The city bus stops right at the RV park.

The park can get busy in Nov/Dec so make reservations early. We need to follow our own advice since we haven't done that yet. We have hesitated because last we heard they put the cost on your card for the whole two months when we make the reservation and it makes us mad that they have our money all that time before we even get there. There are two more RV parks up the hill from the KOA but one is just as expensive with none of the amenities of the KOA and the other is pretty dumpy and the electricity and sewer can't be trusted. Other RV parks in town are just too far out to be convenient.

I don't think the trollies are handicapped accessible, but the buses are. They have a ramp that comes down so it is very easy to get scooters and wheelchairs on board.

Most of the people I know there are older and probably not up to dog walking, but they may know people in the park who can do it and can be trusted. Ask about dog-walking when you call to make your reservation.

There are two elevators that will get you up and down to the Riverwalk.

There is a place downtown where you can rent wheelchairs and scooters and they will deliver to your hotel and pick it up when you are done.

Joni what you done is a perfect ATC - however when you go to a gathering...

sometimes... and you don't have to... but some people make them 2 sided - either by printing them that way or laminating the 2 sides together.... to get more info...

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38803

And, if you read the 1st thread in this this link (what DSP is using for the upcoming Adobe Crop for their ATC Cards) And, then go a few more - Lauren provides another link to the DSP ATC Gallery... which should provide more help...

Really the point of Crop or GTG ATC's is to trade them so that we can remember the person... so just keep that in mind.

When we were in SLC last January I had mine printed at Costco. They did a page of them (can't remember how many on a page), and even cut them for me. I didn't laminate them, tho. Most of the ones we traded there weren't laminated, but it's a nice touch if you want to do it. (Gotta get mine out and start revising....) Thanks!!! I'll come up with something for the back!!! and then closer to the date I can print them!!!

Can we create a gallery to post them all in?

Is there anyway we can "get our hands on" the t-shirt graphic? I would love to a) use on my ATC and b) add to my flair...

Margie has not yet "approved" it...

and, even then... I'm not sure, it will be available for everyone to use..

we'll have to check on that issue.

the issue would be copyright issues..

Joni - we will check... ok...

Here is a hint for printing two-sided: Make the second side small so if the paper gets a bit off in the printer your second side won't print off the end of your card.

I do one card and then let Photoshop do a picture package for me. I think Photoshop will do a page of 2.5x3.5. If not, you can make it do it.

A photo of the person and their real name somewhere on the card is really helpful in remembering who was at the GTG.

I love doing ATC's - used to do ATC swaps in my paper scrapping days. The small format is really appealing to me and the best swaps I did were cemetery swaps. I got rid of all my cards when we moved into the RV.

When we were in SLC last January I had mine printed at Costco. They did a page of them (can't remember how many on a page), and even cut them for me. I didn't laminate them, tho. Most of the ones we traded there weren't laminated, but it's a nice touch if you want to do it. (Gotta get mine out and start revising....) Yes, I've about decided that this will be a "for sure"--so I need to get the campground reservation made as well. :D

Yay! I can't wait to see you again! We need to get our reservations made, too!

I'm not sure what time I'll be getting to SA, but I'll be coming in on Thursday evening. I'm taking Friday off so I can play with everyone! (But that does mean that I prolly won't be taking off early on Thursday...:()
