What Size for Creating Pattern/Texture Files

Have been taking digital pictures of items for a texture/pattern file. When I define a pattern, about what size should I make? Thank you.

It really depends on if you want to tile them or use them as a single image . FOr some of my patterns they are 400x400 ( meaning they repeat 6 times across the page - some are bigger than that and some ( like some textures) - i have them at 2400x2400 so they fill a background.
