Sticking again with the portrait theme this week, I want you to set your lens length to 50mm and take your shot of a single person.

You have the choice of either colour or black and white and can upload up to 3 photos into the Photography Challenge Gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=615) by the end of Sunday July 19th :)

I want to try to take better photos, which is why I read this forum... but...

I'm so lost. I don't even know how to do this. :(

I'm a bad bad person. My husband bought me a 500$ camera and I only know how to use auto settings. How to I change the length of somehting that is built in?

Oh - great challenge Karen!

Rebekah - don't feel bad. I had my DSLR for a couple of years before it came off auto! It took me a long time to get my head around all the jargon (and I still struggle). 50mm refers to the focal length of the lens. If you have a DSLR, then you may have a kit lens that is (for example) 18-55mm. So when you zoom in to almost its full zoom, that is 50mm. There is also 50mm lenses that don't zoom. These are popular choices for people wanting a (relatively) cheap "fast" lens. They have a wide maximum aperture (lets more light in) so can be used in lower light situations. That is probably clear as mud and I am sure someone else can explain it better :)

I have a Canon G10 Powershot

It has a zoom on it, I think up to 17x whatever that means. All I know is it can go a long way! It has optical and digital zoom, but one is when it's closer and the other is farther away I think.

My manual is in another state. I'm smart like that. I didn't pack it with me when I came to California.

According to the internet (and as we know, it is never wrong :) ), a G10 has a focal range of 28-140mm zoom lens. So I am guessing that 50mm would be about 2x zoom (its total range is 5x zoom)

So, I just zoom in 2 times and then point and click? I can do that... I think. I will try.

Are there any other constraints as far as background? If it is a portrait, should it be a solid background?

You should be able to look up your camera specs on line Rebekah!

Background can be whatever you like, there are no other 'rules' :) just a single person with your lens length set to 50mm :)

Well, I am trying to work on this. I am practicing with RAW format and adjusting ISO and the +/- numbers on a dial on my camera. So, we will see what I can come up with.

Well, I ended up taking sleeping pills, to make sure I slept at night.... and slept through the whole flipping day too. Woke up at 3pm(ish) and ended up not going to Lynnie's. <sigh> I felt bad, but she was very understanding. So I helped Shaari pack and finish getting ready to go and then we went and had a date night. It was nice :)

Maybe we can all get together sometime soon? After the Adobe crop I am headed back up to Washington state, so we have until then...

Yeah... I act like I know my auto settings... but my photos are such crap sometimes. I only scrap the good ones, so... you have no idea how bad a photographer I really am LOL

I've been trying to pactice but so far i've only managed to get as far away as 30mm (according to my Lightroom trial) So, I need to zoom more I guess. I'll keep trying.

some of my photos are turning out very grainy, even from RAW... what does this mean? Not all of them are that way. I am so confused.

Karen
07-13-2009, 06:11 PM
Sometimes the grain comes from underexposure so make sure your exposure is right.
Can you post an example?

Okay Karen I will.... let me finish waking up and get a shower and write my end-of-class term paper and at some point tonight I will get some samples in my gallery for you to look at.

Do you want the undeveloped files or my try at development or both?

Karen
07-14-2009, 11:10 PM
undeveloped, but can you post the image and a cropped part of it......it may be hard to tell on here but we'll have a look anyway :)

It's been so long since the last time I took part on a challenge here. Now I see more beautiful photos in the gallery that I enjoy viewing! WOW... Karen, must be hard for you to select them!

Anyway, I think I'm going to participate on this challenge since I took a lot of pictures of single person at 50mm focal length. So here are my entries:
