View Full Version : Gimme a Clue with a Twist

Lauren

So Seeing you all enjoyed the last round of gimme a clue Im going to bring it back again but this time Im going to give it a twist - instead of starting with a colour scheme Im going to start with a photo or an image - and you can make your colour scheme suggestions from the photo or image. -
I will use some of your photos too if you would like me too but I dont want to be swamped with requests though so havent worked out the best way to do that.
Maybe I will call for who wants a photo from the 3 winners from the previous round.

Anyway to start things off I will use one of my photos and this is it- use it to create a colour swatch and for inspiration for pieces

Create a colour swatch for us to use for the next gimme a clue kit.

I love playing with Kuler.com. Here's what I came up with using that site.

ok I decided that I would choose colours from all your swatches and I made up a new one - I went for slightly less saturated colours from Shanas swatches along with the gold from Sheryls and and Cheryls - The desaturated colours in the kit will make the photo really stand out I think.
Lets keep the yellow as an accent like it is in the photo

Fire away with some suggestions for papers to get us started

Papers

Stripes or a plaid from the colors.

Love the blue how about a blue paper with golden yellow flowers on the corners or edges

water gradient from the navy to green

A paper made with the the same texture that is in the water at the bottom right edge of the photo - using blue green and grey that is on your color swatch.

This is just a cunning plan to get kits that match your trip photos, isn't it Lauren! Love that first paper. It seems to be a little beachy looking - perhaps a sand textured paper in the light beigey colour? Perhaps with sort of shell faintly embossed on it (just rambling here)

YEAH you're back with clues!!! Love the Bg so far. How about a rocky texture in the grey or a nice crinkled green maybe with a bit of grass (like the spiky grass you get at the sea)

A paper with a rocky texture like those rocks, but softer.
A textured yellow paper, like with little yellow petals in a natural paper

Elements?
A rock!
A spray of the yellow flowers (I wanted to be the first to suggest it!)

Oh, those look great.

Hm, maybe something with those yellow flowers or anything with the yellow as an accent - maybe a frame - brown with yellow
- rocks or pebbles
- an overlay with a rocky texture

Welcome home.

An edge for the page that looks like the rocky cliff face.

Or maybe a frame that looks like plaster/rock crumbling a little.

Striped ribbon in the colours.

I meant to join this earlier as the kit looked beautiful. Next time xxx

a flat piece of weathered wood thick enough to be used to write a title/journaling on
a matching circular frame that is hanging by chains
an overlay of ocean waves/sea foam

I am LOVING this kit, Lauren. How about a weathered overlook type fence? Or maybe a cluster of rocks?

Lynnie

I was on this trip! I was on this trip! I can use this kit (well, I can use all your kits, but I have an extra special excuse to get this one :D)

Lauren, I too, am amazed by your artistic skills. All the things you do look so brilliantly real. It is awesome to know that you (and all the designers at DSP) create everything from scratch. It is what makes you special.

How about a giant elephant seal (haha, just kidding, I know you don't do creatures!)

driftwood, rocks, a bird silhouette overlay, raffia, poison ivy (:D), seagulls in any way shape or form (outlines, feathers, wings), title "Along the Coast", flower confetti, pebbles, road signs, old metal sign, weathered wood signage...

Ohhh I sleep for a while and look at how fast this has come together !
I love the weathered frame and how it stands out against the rich colors of the papers.

Could we have a journaling mat of some kind in that same kind of color? Maybe a breezy light woven gauze fabric - with the edges frayed.

This brings back memories of my trip down, then back up the coast. My memory also calls for water, waves, and the blue of the sky for a BG. There was a low-growing flowering ground cover someone told me was "ice plant", and, of course, the gorgeous low-growing pinkish California Poppy. I brought back some seeds but it WON'T grow in Michigan :(

I did try an ocean edge overlay but Im not sure yet that it works with this kit

Added a ropey element as per Mars request and a taller foliage element to add to the 2 existing ones - now we only need one more element so what should it be

Rusty Staple to hold all the stalks together

Or maybe some messy stitches of the rope/string that go over and over in the same place like you were stitching on a button (with the width about the same as a staple).

Actually it would be quite good if the stitches were wide enough to sew the frame on too.

TalyQ

Those flowers will go great together.
I agree it needs some more natural fiber ribbon or something else to tie those flowers together. Maybe even a piece of wire twisted.

or something a bit less angular to balance all the lines - a soft circle of something? (not very helpful I know!

How about shell bits - stitched on with twine - or like confetti or something. Seems to me that coming down the coast we can have shell bits. Maybe some mother of pearl (nacre) or even some pearls.
