Using ACDSee 10

Today I came to do my regular ACDSee back up and database optimization. Two steps down the line of doing the back up I get the dreaded "ACDSee has encountered a problem and will close" - tried several times, same results :(.

Seeing things were messy anyway i have run the optimization - still can't back up.

Apart from this all seems to be running smoothly but can't go on with no backing up - any suggestions??

I did mean to also say...

Someone who uses ACDSee 2009 - is it worth the upgrade? I really love ACDSee and have put a LOT of work into it, but find its instability such a pain, such a time waster :(

I am absolutely happy to buy IF it really is more stable, as i say i do love it when it works!

Meryl, so sorry you have run into a glitch! I have also been debating the upgrade, so I will listen for any advice.

Is there any other message, an error code or anything else before ACDSee closes?

The only thing I would try, if you haven't already, is to do a restart and when your computer comes back up, don't start any programs, and if there is anything "overhead" running in the background, try to shut those down as well.

Other than that, I would open a ticket with ACDSee before messing around more.

Hi Kathleen - thanks for your reply.

No other message, optimize 9did twice went smoothly, rebooted twice :(

Now, to add to my troubles, find I can't log in to DigiScrapInfo...... NOT my day lol!!!

Meryl, I did find a post at digiscrapinfo that suggests:

Deleting the CDX file (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/joomla/component/content/article/51-errors/216-recovering-from-crashes-deleting-the-cdx-files)

The summary states:
You are going to delete the .cdx files in the database, the .cdx files are the thumbnails files the database generates and they can become corrupt therefore we can delete them with out effecting any database information, The steps for that are as follows.
(only do one of the steps 2 - 6 depending on which software & operating system you have)

If you feel uncomfortable doing this, I would recommend making a copy of the Default folder before proceeding.

After that if you are still getting the error, they suggest:
Doing this shouldn't affect the database but I highly recommend doing a backup before proceeding.

Delete the following 2 files in the following folder:

- Delete Thumb1.fpt and Thumb2.fpt files located here:

ACSee 9 on XP: In Windows Explorer go to this location: "C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\ACD Systems\Catalogs\90\Default"

ACDSee 10 on XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\ACD Systems\Catalogs\100\Default

In Version 9 on Vista: Go to this location: My Computer, C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\ACD Systems\Catalogs\90\Default

In Version 10 on Vista: Go to this location: My Computer, C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\ACD Systems\Catalogs\100\Default

This one might help cause this will be deleting the thumbnail information and that is what is causing the problems.

I feel your pain!!!

Just an update - I went through all the steps and right now am in a worse mess than before :cry::cry: , at one stage it completly froze my laptop, got blue screens the whole trip

Amazing how one comes to rely on a program - I feel like part of me is missing.

Ray came home tired after sorting out peoples problems all day didn't have the heart to push mine - hopefully he will take a look today.

Meryl, I am so sorry!

How old is your most recent back-up, and what have you done since?

I'd love to say all is resolved but alas no.....

Yesterday dh (patient man that he is!) spent ages trying to fathom what is going on. Removed the whole data base - still can't use the back up wizard..... :( but at least that showed that it was not a corrupt data base problem.

I downloaded the trial of ACDSee 2009 - imported the data base - still no joy :(

I have opened a ticket with Customer care (those who have done this know that is NOT any kind of instant gratification lol!) and have had encouraging help from Kristi.

Hope to be back with better news soon!

Meryl, I'm no help, but I feel your pain. I would be lost without ACDSee. And all those hours spent organizing!!:cry:

Meryl, I hope through Kristi or ACDSee you are up and running soon! Of course I have checked my latest back-up and it is current, but now I want to learn more about the latest version!

Well at last i come with good news - all now seems to be working :) :) :) all that is except the back up wizard - last time we tried that it didn't work and quite hoestly right now will all humming along I am scared to try. This doesn't mean i am riding by the seat of my pants though - Kristi told me that copying the default folder:

"C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local settings\Application Data\ACD Systems\Catalogs\100\Default"

into my ACDSee Backup folder.

I have now started using 2009 and what a joy to be able to embed my data information - for that I think 2009 will be worth paying for (still on trial) other than that i really don't see a difference.

thanks so much for your support!

I'm so glad to see you got this sorted out...I hate when the essentials in scrapping act up!

Meryl, glad you are back up! After you have used the new version for a bit, will you post back your thoughts about it?

I am so sorry to hear this - at what stage did you get the "message"? I do get it periodically but as soon as it has closed I reopen and almost always it is fine - this one really worried me as i have never had it with the back-up wizard (now here I am NOT alone......) and couldn't stand the though of no back up.

Tell us more and lets see if we can help - it is such a good program!

Meryl- whew! Glad that you got figured out. This kind of issue I always refer to Heidi or to Kristi (or like you, my hubby!)

Usually when I get that "ACDsee will close know" on start up, I have screwed up something with my ehd. I have to disconnect my ehd/ipod/any other external hardware. Then I have to shut down. Plug my ehd/ipod where they belong and reboot. That usually helps reset the drive letters.

I know that isn't what happened to you, but it might help someone else who comes along.

Deleting the cdx files and making sure that there are no long files names are also other possibilities for that kind of crash.

As for PM 2009-- I *love* the new changes. I especially love the embed database feature.I haven't had any major crashes using 2009 but I love knowing that if I screw up my d/b somehow I can still recover my embedded info.
