View Full Version : Multiplicity - (number one!)

MULTIPLICITY is a new designer challenge we will run a few times a year - and it works similar to the "design with me" or pass the pixel challenges - BUT anywhere from two to four designers are going to play along at any given time!!!!
THAT means that many finished kits in the same color scheme, in the varying styles of the different designers! AND, at the end of the challenge, we'll have random draws to give away some of the kits FREE to those who participated! But you have to play along to have a chance! Also the kits will be in the store afterward.
Here is the MULTIPLICITY GALLERY (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=7359)!
If you've never played at a designer challenge that works in that way before, here's what to do: Look at the color scheme below and think of a theme and some backgrounds that you know would be great for it - and make your suggestions! The participating designers will be your "challengees" and we are all going to create using your suggestions and the same color scheme. Who knows what we'll pick? We might even all pick the same thing - and make it different ways - which will be fun to watch.
Who will be your Design Team for this first challenge?
TINA, MERYL, and Z (that's me)! And now adding SUZANNE!
Are you ready??? Subscribe to this thread or check often for updates! Here is the color scheme for the first MULTIPLICITY. Let's see your suggestions for backgrounds first, and theme ideas if anything strikes you - and after we get a couple of backgrounds done we will take element suggestions too!

I love the colors! How about a jewelry theme? Or maybe autumn leaves? I'd love to see a brown background with the teal and coral higlights...scrolls or grunge maybe?

I love the tan for a weathered newsprint type paper, maybe with a bit of singeing around the edges.

I see this kit as artsy sophisticated even a bit heritage so combination of grungy aged bgs combined withart syled bgs with blends of colours textures and words

08-21-2009, 06:42 PM
I would love to see the teal with a tiny, viny kind of swirl along at least one edge, but not all of them. The dark brown with the orangy color grunging it up. And the light brown with an all-over pattern (of nearly any kind, circles, square, flowers, whatever) out of the other colors.

Hmmmm, it's interesting how everyone's mood seems to affect their ideas. I just got back from the Pacific Coast, where they were in the midst (mist?) of their foggy season. The colors on the beach were richer like the colors for this. I'm still thinking sandy texture, wooden pier texture, deep water texture...

I definitely feel fall from these colors, which are great by the way!
I particularly like the 3 colors on the right hand side for backgrounds:
*Maybe the lighter brown as a "recycled" paper with flecks of the orange and darker brown.
*a soft, kinda crushed corduroy one, not too big of a wale
*a harlequin, not very strong on the colors
Is anyone else thinking of these designers' styles and picturing your suggestions from each of them?? I am. Oh, this is SOOOO exciting!!!!

A grungy, graffiti style kit. Maybe with a brick wall background.
I second this! I can almost see a graffiti print paper made with the blue, tan and orangy colors to go with that brick wall.:)

for some reason the colors just reminded me of a farm. Maybe a farming theme?

what about the cream with polka dots in the teal
thin stripes in the coral and brown.

I think I was on the same wavelength as Scamp - thinking crisp, yet well loved beach house or lake house.
A crushed velvet type background in that teal/blue color. With slightly lighter colored swirls in it.
No idea on the theme...

I was thinking autumn - play in the park/swings sort of thing...but then thought backgrounds would look cool, textured or patterned- like mosaic......but in diamonds crazy path....but normal square mosaic would look cook also!
I am thinking leaves, dirty (grunge could come in there)...perhaps it could be "Alfresco in the park". I can see the coffee/hot choc being delivered to a little outdoor mosaic table sitting overlooking a park with autumn leaves as the kids play in the park!........

I definitely am feeling Autumn as I'm in Nebraska and it is starting to feel like that. I think I really like the grunged patterns and the suggestion Sandy made, the tan for a weathered newsprint type paper, maybe with a bit of singeing around the edges. A pile of leaves raked up and burning, do they still allow you to do that? It smells so like fall!
The orange color for the pumpkin patch photos! All these colors and ideas are so fabulous, can't wait to see what you do with these ideas!

08-21-2009, 10:36 PM
I thinking of doodles! Come on Z, you know you want to do some doodles! I love the newsprint idea. I'd like to see the lightest color as a paper and the deep blue as a paper. Maybe the dark blue as a night sky with doodly stars and moon in the light yellowy color.
I like the Autumn theme idea too :) How about a brown background with orange flowers sprinkled across it? Maybe with the beige/cream as highlights on the flowers or little dots in the background?

But guess what? I haveAWESOMEnews! SUZANNE is going to play toooooooooooo! We totally have four different styles of design going, so every one of you should see something you like!
So welcome her in on this - I'll change the first post to add her name, and we're off! Woo hooooooo!

Theme: Before the Snow
I love polka dots (little ones) - - the dark brown with light polka dots
Doodled teal, cream, and coral flowers
Gold elements
On the taupe-ish colored page --- a grid in dark but muted brown
An overlay of dark brown scrolls/swirls
An overlay of gold glitter

I chose Leea's suggestion of the brown bg with the orange flowers and cream dotty highlights. It's grungy a bit, not too much so that it won't go with jewelry though!
Let's see which designer posts next!
Oh, and we'll have a Multiplicity Gallery soon - and you can put suggestions under the previews and/or in this thread. For now, here's my bg:

What a great idea for a challenge. I totally love those colours and the jewellery posted by Shana is just perject. Glassy/ethnicy/leathery stuff??
Z - superb BG. I can just feel that velvet.
HOw about lots and lots of grunge! Plain colour BGs but scrunched/brushed/folded and generally pretty well battered up.
Frayed linen style of BGs on any colours?
Dirty denim.
I love the jewelry pics too! Great inspiration! And great idea for a challenge!

Having just returned from being taken out to breakfast (YAY), I have to tell you, this place had the neatest wall paper border. Of just these colors (mostly) and 'twas a beachy thing. So that's where my head's at and if I can remember by the time you get to *elements*, I have some ideas...
In the meanwhile - the dark brown paper with a hint of an old row boat in one corner with the tannish color.

A teal BG with faint cream floral swirls in it.
A cream BG grunged up
What a great challenge! Love that paper Z, it would be perfect with some folded aged paper and of course I always love stitches.
The jewelry choices are awesome, and of course for jewels we will need a chain, locket, wire or some knotted ribbon.

Whitewashed wood columns for elements

I'd love to see a bg paper in the dark blue color.
The orangey color is making me think of copper, maybe a twisted, rusted copper wire element or frame.

Some tortiseshell buttons, stitched with thread. But you know how these buttons sort of lift up from the edge and have different pearly patterns and shine.
A paper with stripes of stitched down lace or maybe with a ripped edge showing lace underneath it.
A striped more mascueline looking paper.
Paper with swirls of stiching on it.... or acutally a swirly stitched overlay would be cool that could be added to any paper.

This is what I posted there about the beautiful backs that Ms Meryl has done. . .
I may be waaaay off but. . .
The first thing I thought of was my mom having her morning coffee on their front porch every morning.
Snapdragons, birdhouses, shepherd's hooks, rail or picket fencing, tiny sweet mouse or chipmunk, One of the old metal patio chairs the ones with the metal flower motif cut out in the back, needs a little rust on the chair. Oooo, I'm getting carried away.

Please someone do some of the jewellery as it would be so great to have some gems/glass in the rich colours. Metal has been suggested somewhere and I think the copper/wire/brass ideas would look fab. Some viney things and a cool edging/overlay wiht flowers and leaves.
Good luck designers....

WOW! You guys are busy!
LOVE everyone's papers so far.
Tina!! That glittery one rocks! Thanks so much. It's hard to tell the direction you're heading with just the one so far, but if you don't make all the papers glittery, or all over glittery, then we could have some glittery elements later. yum-yum.
Z! The jewelry piece is beautiful. That color looks so good against the others. I'm a bit stuck though for elements...Maybe feathers??
Meryl...I'm still loving those soft romantic backgrounds. I keep thinking of rose petals, but if you a flower spray/cluster, maybe some teeny fern-like leaves in the dark teal, with flowers in the coral and cream, and accent "stems" in the browns...
Suz!! Love the first paper...is there a second yet?? Like I said above, it's hard to know the direction you're heading with one item. I know I saw mention of barely there orange swirls coming up. What about a "handmade" paper in a soft shade with either specks of the other colors or hints of "pressed" flowers. (even though I have boys!)

well...I obviously took too long typing. Suz, love the new paper.

I'm sure on one of these kits we could fit in a wire dress form (mannequin) like you get to hang jewellery on etc.
Actually a theme of vintage sewing/crafting would be fabulous (and go so well with the next Heritage challenge).
So how about an old singer style sewing machine stamp; a metal crochet hook; some lace in the process of being made with all the pins and the threads spreading out (would look great in the back of some flowers etc... well in my mind it does). A strip of crochet lace; an old wooden thread reel with just a little thread on it or a vintage little circle sticker like on the top of the reel. A card of pearl buttons.
I can just see this... hopefully you can all too. ;)

Elements: love flowers, swirls, need more rectangular frames of any type. How about a frame with the jewels in the corner. I keep seeing an old Sears catalog thanks to that one paper from Z's kit, but don't know how that would translate to elements.
I still need paper suggestions :)
Here are my 1st 2.

I have seen a few display forms for clothing made of wicker in the antique stores, along with hat boxes that have worn out labels on them, gloves and odd pieces of clothing, silk shawls etc. I would love to see elements like this, they would be wonderful to group together on a heritage layout.
Tina - how about that coral color with some grunge!
here's a wrinkly, dotty coral.

These kits are gorgeous! Tina - to keep things a little different, I think you need to add the teal (just because your colors are soooo much like Suz's. But then Suz needs to keep her's toned down and use more of the cream. So I guess you could swap that!
I think we need some frames around. Love the antique ideas I was reading. Maybe an old fashioned frame, kind of cracked and broken.

Beautiful, Suzanne! I'm glad I wasn't around when you asked about syle...as I love your swirlies but adore your doodlies....How 'bout a vintage type frame or frames in the cream color but a bit dingied up with the browns, with some paper peeled away in spots, a folded corner maybe, a bit curved up off the paper--square and/or rectangular? I really like your doodley flowers like the ones in your blog link/signature, but I don't know if you can work something like that in. I'd like elements that aren't gender specific, but I don't know what. Your wordart is always nice.

i'm laughing so hard, shana!! you must have REALLY wanted to say that - you said it 3 times!!! okay, okay, butterflies, floral, overlayish stuff!!! you got it!

Oh love the leaves.... Makes me think of a forest floor blanketed with leaves... and a worn path
Turquoise dragonfly to match the necklace? (Of course, that doesn't really go with the forest path idea, lol)
Coral Funky sunglasses for the "be you", zany Maybe w/ opaque lenses so they can be colored or clear
For Shine On.... a series of stars, shooting star

Beautfiul kit Meryl - so many great suggestions for names already - I think I like Autumn Melody
Tina - love that wordart, I suggest shining starts, maybe a small group of them
Suzanne - maybe a gentle corner overlay with a hint of those stamps you have behind your frames.

Would love to see some sparkly brads in your kit Tina.
Torm newspaper for journalling would look good in Elizabeth's kit. Also would like to see a single flower to match the group of flowers and a silky blue ribbon.

Wow, this thread is rockin’… it is hard to keep up! I’m just loving these kits!!
I would love to see some rusted metal to go along with these colors! Maybe a swirl with some teal beads?
I've gotten busy this morning and added a few more of your suggestions.
A cascade of stars and a dragonfly.

I totally love Z's frame, Tina's dragonfly, and Suz's name! That Be-You-tiful is "purrrrrrrrfect"!
Tina - I would love to see just a touch more of the teal, could your frame be made that color? Maybe with more jewels? (those are soooo pretty!)
Z - where are you at, elements still?
Been soooo busy, these are happening faster than I can add suggestions?

Meryl's kit is so gorgeous!
The frames that Suzanne and Z have done rock!
Tina, your blue blingy is awesome! What about something made from your glittery paper, except in the dark teal?
I love to group things, yea..I'm a groupie, so something to group. That's helpful, I know. :)
I LOVE EVERYTHING!!

Where I "am at" is FINALLY back home from getting my daughter registered for after school care! I had to go to another town to fill out the forms and make a payment and wow, I'm glad I won't have to do that every time I need to pay. But I'm HOME now and ready to get back on this - I loved the dragonfly suggestion - I can't do better than Tina's adorable one though! So I'm going to read back through the thread to pick my next element! I saw some great ones last night when I made the frame.

i've done another framey-thing in cardboard with a grungy-ripp-y edge and some stamps behind. oh, and a ripped-up, stapled piece of paper. i was going to do a doodled dragonfly, but now i'm not sure, cause i love tina's. but maybe a doodley one would be a good companion... i'll see what i can do! sooooooo aweseome!
i need about 2 more ideas! :)

Ive made a few suggestions in the gallery but Id best do them again here (just in case my name is random:D)
On Suz's:
A Suzanne C Walker edgy edge
Teal ribbon and trailing bow
On Tina's:
Glittery blue page overlay or photo overlay (you know, the ones with swirly bits that overlay in the corners of the photos and around the edges?)
On Elizabeths:
Groupie of light frames with flowers and swirls

I asked for a torn cardboard edge before, but now I'm thinking of a torn paper using the dark blue since it hasn't been used much. Also a swirly, gungy overlay would be nice from either of you.

I can't get my image to load here and I have to run feed the dogs and pick up kids, etc - BUT my to-date sample is in the gallery here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=331136&nocache=1)!
I did the bow and some more word art with "light" in it - and I think I'm going to finish up tonight with a bird on a branch and a binder clip, since I've never tried to make those before!
But we'll seeeeeeee! I'll miss this challenge when I'm done!j
Edit: got it to load now:
