Can't wait to hear some reviews from DSP'ers on the Craft!

You can always use whatever mouse you do have. But I am going to assume that the input from a tablet will work with any application, at least the basics of navigation.

I started using my Graphire about a year ago and liked it so much for detail work that I ended up getting a Bamboo tablet for use with an extremely picky program. It worked great for that. At home I use excel, word, etc., too and don't even use a mouse anymore--just the pen. I'd say go for it!!

I was just looking at Amazon--it looks to me like the craft tablet they have is an older version. If you look at the video for the new one you will see that the pen is held in a red slip-in thing on the right side of the tablet. I didn't see that in the enlarged picture of the product at Amazon. It may take a few days for these things to actually hit the stores. I've got my eyes peeled for Best Buy 'cause I've got some bonus bucks there!

My concern is being left handed ... I see there are buttons (or something) on the left hand side - wonder if they would be in the way??

I know if I manage to get one somehow I'll have 2 kids fighting with me over who gets my old one, lol. I might have to just say that I'm keeping it for work (if I ever get a job, had a phone interview today) or keeping it to use with my desktop...being to lazy to move things around all the time, lol.

I will definitely look at the videos and glad there are some tutorials that come with it.

It looks like this one on Amazon for $129 is talking about a Touch Ring. That's not the same one, is it? [EDIT: SEE KATHLEEN'S POST.]

Oh wait, is this the right one with all the DSP goodies? amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Technology-CTH461-Bamboo-Craft/dp/B002OOWC42/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253938783&sr=1-4)

I would love one of these - have not used a tablet before and am rather fond of my mouse - but with this one having a touch pad along with the pen it would suit me a lot better -do we order one through DSP to get all the other goodies - or is it the one that Omi mentioned in her previous post at Amazon?

Kathleen
09-26-2009, 08:14 AM
For those with questions about the proper model ... When looking directly on Wacom's web site, they list a model # of CTH461 (if you add it to your cart you see this). The second link Judy provided to Amazon has a matching model # (Wacom Bamboo Craft (http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Technology-CTH461-Bamboo-Craft/dp/B002OOWC42/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253938783&sr=1-4)). As for Costco, or other models in store, check the model # I guess, and make sure you know what the return policy is if the tablet is not what you expect. I will research see if I can find some history on models, but reading the packaging and seeing a description of the touch features would seem to be the key.

Kathleen
09-26-2009, 08:19 AM
And for those of you not in the US, I do hope you can get them!

Ineke, DSP is not selling Wacom products, so look to Amazon, or other retailers to get your hot little hands on one.

Looks VERY cool! I have an old wacom tablet...large Intuos and I'm wondering about the difference in feel from this new one and the old one....the levels of sensitivity. I checked out the website, but can't find out. Anyone have any ideas?

Many Feathers
09-26-2009, 09:05 AM
There appears to be an older Craft model that does NOT use the gestures...it uses a pen and mouse. Better be sure to get the right model.....

Kathleen
09-26-2009, 09:16 AM
How old is your intuous? The 3/4 versions for sure will be different for pressure and resolution. I have the exact same question, though and had looked at some of the specifications. The Intuos 4 has 2048 pressure levels, where the craft has 1024 (either way, that is a lot of sensitivity!). I think it really comes down to the type of use, but it would be great to hear if anyone has had the opportunity to use both.

The Intuous models are designed for smoother flow, precision, etc. But the Craft seems to be a GREAT whole package for editing and general computer navigation.

Kathleen
09-26-2009, 03:15 PM
Jemma, tablets are pure USB interface devices. If an external mouse works on your system, and you meet the system requirements you should be good to go!

From Wacom's web site, System Requirements:

PC Windows® 7, Vista® or XP with Service Pack 2
Mac Mac OS® X (10.4.8 or higher)
Hardware Also requires color display, powered USB port, and CD/DVD drive

Thanks, Kathleen, for looking at the model number. :o And for the good advice to check return policy.

JD, I think this is very confusing, too. It seems like Wacom would have made a bigger differentiation in name or something. Looks like we just need to be very careful to look at model number and to be sure it's the "multi-touch" and not the "Touch Ring." [Or be smart like addicted and order it straight from Wacom. BUT--I can get free shipping PLUS a 95 cent discount through Amazon, addicted. :D ]

Seems to me like Wacom may get some backlash on this. I have a feeling that a lot of people will end up unintentionally spending money on the older model.

Hey Kathleen,
Thanks for your response. You got me curious so I checked and I bought my Wacom in September of 2001 for $309. I believe it is the first Intuous as I put in the model number and that's what came up...no Intuous II or III or 4 :-). It shows the pen sensitivity is 1024. The accuracy is a little better...it shows pen accuracy for Intuous is .010 in and the Bamboo Craft is .02 in. The old Intuous shows maximum report rate of 200 points per second. The Craft shows Max Data Rate of 133pps. I'm assuming that's the same thing so the old Intuous beats the Craft there. There are other specs for the old Intuous, such as tilt and maximum reading height. I'm thinking the Craft only uses one pen and you probably can't get other ones for it...like the airbrush. And I'm guessing you can't draw with tilt with the Craft. But...I've never done any of that anyway.

For the fun of it, I think I'm going to write Wacom and ask them for a comparison and if I should get the new one :-) Let me know if you find anything else out.

and thanks for the inspiration! :-)

After you have it a bit, I, like Kathleen, would love to know how it compares to the Intuous as far as sensitivity, etc. I'm still thinking of getting one :-) I love my Intuous, but it is a 9x12 and to be honest, I mostly just use the little part instead of the whole thing (you can map off a small section).

I am heading over to The Campus to see if it will be offered again, soon. Ok...I will have to pay for it but that would be worth it. I need to get a new one too: I am still using the Graphire (note, no numbers or designation after that, meaning the original Graphire!) The Wacom guy at the last convention I went to laughed and laughed at me after he figured out what it was, saying he had never even seen one in real life. I was really impressed with the new ones, so many cool functions!

FYI, I got a comment back from Wacom asking when there might be an Intuous 5 and if it would include the touch feature. He said the Intuous 4 came out this past year (does that mean 2008 or 2009? Anyone know?) and that "Wacom is not able to comment on future products as we do not disclose this information." Oh well, I figured it was worth a try.

I'm still trying to decide if I should go with the Intuous 4 or the Craft. Anyone who used both care to comment? :-) Kim, if you're reading this, if you had to give up one and keep one, which would be which? :-)

LOL... that is so not a fair question :) :)

I could never give up my Intuous 4... that said though... this craft is just as good (it is just smaller and a tiny bit different - but it is sooooooooo convenient!!)

How about this... get the pen and touch Bamboo to get you through until Intuous comes out with a touch? Now... I have no idea if they have product scheduled like that... but I sure hope it would be in the works!!!!

What published features does the Intuos have that the Bamboo does not? You have to analyze individual features and decide if you are willing to pay the difference for the higher model.

For me, I am waiting until I can afford a nice touch MONITOR, or touch tablet "laptop" PC, and so a Bamboo will save my poor aching wrist until the technology comes around to where I can rely on and afford it.

The smaller size is a huge plus for laptops, I pop mine in my bag and go to crops with it!

I'm pretty sure the Intuous 4 was released earlier in 2009. No idea what their typical release cycle is.

Kim, I probably should sign up for this class Bamboo Craft for November. I was wondering if I should uninstall the one I got last year? I used it but not as much as I should have so guess I should start anew and really learn how to use the Bamboo Craft Tablet. Thanks.

Too soon! I got my Bamboo Craft too soon. It was my birthday present early in July and had the "other" software inside. I missed the class in October so I hope the class is offered again soon. I am heading over to The Campus to see if it will be offered again, soon. Ok...I will have to pay for it but that would be worth it. I wonder if Wacom would let me buy the NEW DSP stuff since I missed that version by such a short time.

LL, I would ask -- nothing to lose and you're a persuasive kinda gal. :D

Brenda, I just called our local Best Buy and they're saying they only have the one with the pen and mouse....that's the older one that doesn't have the Touch. But....he was looking on their website and said they only have what that says. Perhaps he has it wrong and it is in the stores...

Are you sure you had the newer one? It does not have a mouse included.... If so, I'll visit Best Buy to find out....

Thanks for your help.

Brenda, when I search, it seems that Adobe Projector may be related to Macromedia and/or flash. It also seems that it is something not compatible with Vista ... what is your OS?

When do you get the message (when starting a specific program, for example), and specifically what is the message?

I went to BestBuy and bought the Bamboo Pen & Touch (they didn't have the craft one) and a small Intuos 4. I was surprised that I didn't like the Pen & Touch... I shouldn't have been... I really am not an IPOD kind of girl :-) The sensitivity is different than my old Intuos. Perhaps it just gets some getting used to.

I immediately LOVED the Intuos 4. The sensitivity on there is noticeably different than my old Intuos. And... I love the small size, the express keys, the touch ring and the radial dial. Unfortunately, the radial dial doesn't seem to be working right. The "email" stays highlighted and is the only one that will highlight. Any ideas? I've written support at Wacom (when I first got my old tablet, you could just call them and get someone on the phone right away :-) but haven't heard back yet. I hope I don't need to return it because I don't think our local Best Buys had any more.

Kim, does your new class also do Intuos 4 or just Bamboo? Kim, thanks so much for your hint to just get rid of the mouse. I did so and am loving it! You just rock, girl!!!! :-)

Which size Intuous4 did you get? I have the small, and am also loving the touch ring. It took me a while to figure out, but the button in the middle of the touch ring changes what the ring will do. There is a tiny little light on the right of the ring that will change position (kind of 1, 2, 4 & 5 o'clock)

By default, the 1 o'clock position is the auto scroll I think. Check the customization settings to see what they are set for and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks Kathleen.... it's not the touch ring I'm having problems with, but the radial dial. It looks like a pie on the screen and you can program different things into it. Are you familiar with it?

Kathleen
10-08-2009, 02:15 PM
Sorry, I was thinking ring! I sort of looked at the radial dial when I first installed it, but then programmed my buttons for other things, so haven't used it. Maybe I need to go revisit it!

10-08-2009, 02:27 PM
Kathleen, I guess it's really called the Radial Menu. What's cool about it is you can program a whole bunch of stuff to use in a click. I just saw on a blog, someone coded in Lightroom shortcuts for Spot Removal, Graduated Filter, Adjustment Brush, Virtual copy, White balance, edit in PS. That way, rather than finding the "tabs" in LR, you just hit the radial menu express key and click. I'd like to give it a try. I'm thinking I'll shut down my 'puter and let it rest for a minute or 2 and then restart. Perhaps that will start it working correctly. Hmmm....

So, those of you who have the new Craft, spill the beans! How about posting your pros and cons of it?!! I'd love to know how you like the touch pad part of it, whether it works as advertised or better, how it interfaces with Photoshop, etc. I'm especially interested in the zooming and rotating feature, does that work in PS?? And how do you guys have it set up - next to your keyboard, on a different level up or down from the keyboard, on your lap??

And I was curious about the Fun version - I know it's bigger than the Craft, is that better or just way too much real estate to deal with?

Inquiring minds want to know!!
