Curious for those of you considering like-priced programs, Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements, or those who have both, how you think they compare.

My experience is that to make elements, I prefer PSE. It's faster and easier with better results in the time taken because of all the layer styles. I have a huge collection from One-click Wow, downloaded, or I make them myself in Photoshop and save to put into PSE. With the free Grant's Tools, I find PSE rivals PS in almost every way except for making presets (brushes, custom shapes, gradients, etc). However, the PSE brush options are horrible. Very limited.
PSE is a little easier to learn, and easier to quickly assemble layouts using premade elements.

If I want to do a heavy painting layout, I use Paint Shop Pro. The brush options are vast, and I can do a lot of great montages or painted backgrounds. PSP 9 Art Media Tool really expands on this, and in many ways makes painting in PSP better than even Photoshop. I also love how easy it is to work with patterns/textures in PSP as opposed to PS/PSE. It's so customizable too, with the locations of all the tools, toolbars, and more. I find PSP often has little hiccups like tools freaking out, that doesn't happen in my other software. I also am often disappointed in my ability to create elements using it as they usually take a lot longer and don't look as good as those I make in PS/PSE.
PSP does a great job assembling layouts using premade elements, though perhaps not quite as easy as a simpler program.

So both PSE and PSP have great strengths. To decide, it's important to know what your style is. If you plan to do a lot with brushes, PSP is the way to go. The only drawback there is the PS/PSE brushes for download are much more copious, but the PSP brushes online downloads are becoming a lot more vast. If you look around, you can find a lot.

Any other thoughts on these two softwares?

anyone who uses both have an opinion to which they prefer and why, or what you use one program or the other for?

PSP came on my computer, but my hubby bought me PSE2.0. I have taken classes on PSE and am finally comfortable with some of it. I opened PSP a couple of time but never used it. so I was wondering the same thing

I haven't used PSE. I don't know to compare them. I was going to download a trial of PSE to try just to compare, but it won't work with my operating system, sorry!

Emma--I took your DSU course Intro to PSP a couple of months ago--I can't even TELL you how helpful that was! It was the natural choice since PSP came loaded on my computer, but then I got PSE 3.0 as a gift, so I'm thinking I'll sign up for the Intro to PSE in May, and after that, I'll have a good basis for comparison.

Just fooling around a little on my own, I don't see huge differences in the two programs, but that may be due to my beginner perspective. For example, I'm not even close to the point of making my own elements, and I'm still a very tentative brush user.

So, we'll see.

I think that Bad Juju's observations are very important. What she is saying, from personal experience, is that a beginner will do well and be able to make progress with either program. That is good to know.

Emma,
You know that I am still a beginner. I have not tried to make elements or anything like that. I also took the PSP course and it was very helpful. I decided to get PSE because a good friend of mine had it and I just wanted to mess around with it.
My opinion is the same as Bad JuJu, they seem very similar but I think PSE is a bit easier to learn. I really like both. I don't have the knowledge you have of the brushes and layer styles etc. Right now I just use both and will continue to learn both for a while.
